Many thanks to their hard work. During Hurricane Harvey, this group of firefighters and their support staff suited up and worked non-stop to rescue people from flood waters, put out fires, and save lives. Their efforts saved countless lives and mitigated innumerable damages to property. The coolest thing about this volunteer fire department is that the chief owns a water company, so they never ran out of water. When everything else went offline due to the storms, the Lamar Volunteer Fire Department had water, where they were happy to provide first responders with much needed showers and laundry services. After the storm, they went door to door throughout the peninsula and checked on the gas lines and looked for injuries. They went above and beyond in helping the citizens of Lamar and Aransas County with their hard work. I really appreciate the tireless efforts of these guys and gals. They're mostly/all volunteers, and have their own full-time jobs outside of fire fighting. They put everything else in their lives on hold on such a regular basis to help their community. When faced with Hurricane Harvey, a class 4 hurricane bringing 155+ wind gusts, the City of Rockport was in trouble. But this fire department sprang into action- with bravery and strength- they came out and rescued people whose homes had been destroyed. They helped save people who were trapped under fallen trees, collapsed roofs, toppled walls and many other calamities! This fire department is all volunteer- available at any time to help. It was founded in 1885 when a local resident, Sam Smith donated a carriage, a chemical tank, and $1500 to start up the fire department. They now have over fifty volunteers who utilize an impressive array of equipment to help out the community. They have a bunch of powerful fire trucks, a fleet of ladders, and other lifesaving technology. I enjoyed how in the aftermath of the hurricane, they lifted their tallest ladder with the American Flag hanging down to show the solidarity with the residents of Rockport.
