He's got that middle aged Bay Area Filipino humor and he's very thorough and clear on what to do and how to drive. The lessons were comprehensive but not overwhelming. I think the best highlight of his lessons were the places we went. He and I drove from SF to San Mateo and back, and there was always a way to cram in practice on subjects like knowing what to do at an area with few stop signs or driving on the freeway. I don't usually leave reviews, but after putting off getting a license for years (I'm in my mid-30s), I finally decided to book my first lesson with John. I've had two driving instructors in the past: one focused on making me drive aimlessly around (we went on the highway during my first lesson), and the other was hyper-focused on hand over hand turn techniques. I took 1-2 lessons with each and didn't continue because whenever I asked them how many lessons I would need, they never gave me an answer. For my first lesson with John, he immediately brought out a sample behind-the-wheel test and walked me through what I would be tested on. He then took me to downtown SF to assess my driving skills. After the lesson, he scheduled the behind-the-wheel driving test for November (with my consent). After four lessons with John, I passed my test and got my license on the first try! He is a great instructor who teaches you defensive driving skills. Not only does he expose you to crowded areas downtown and on the highway, but he also goes through all the testing routes with you. He plays music in the car and constantly talks to you while you're driving to simulate real-life driving environments. I am 21 and I have wanted to learn how to drive since high school because I hated waking up early for public transportation, especially nowadays since I work in San Francisco and I live in Daly City. Getting Ubers and Lyfts often added up too. The thought of getting my driver's license always seemed overwhelming (the process, the learning), and I never thought I'd be able to learn because of how easily distracted I get. "Someone like me shouldn't be allowed to drive" I always thought to myself. I recently decided to take the goal of getting my driver's license seriously, and after earning my learner's permit, I decided to look up driving instructors in my area. I chose John since I saw he was very highly rated, and I'm very glad I did! He never made me feel bad for making mistakes (even when I made a lot) and would always have his music playlist on to have you remember tips and tricks for safe driving habits. I'm also a very anxious person, and it helped that he always reminded me to breathe. We drove on the dmv route many times and even went on the freeway to SF a few times since that's the way I'd be taking to go to work. I'm definitely much less anxious to drive than I was at first. I feel confident and ready to drive, even if it's without John in the passenger seat. And I find comfort in knowing that I can contact him any time I need a refresher. I didn't think I would pass on my first try, but I did! So thankful for John. The proud look on his face was something I'll never forget. He would tell me, "now you can show your mom and dad and surprise them!"
