After putting off driving for years, I've finally passed my driving test on my first try thanks to Jay Law. I was extremely nervous but he is patient and calm, knowing when to step in to make sure everyone is safe. He was great at explaining each action to get it right, and how to preform them safely. I had a short notice before the test (Daly City DMV is hard to book so as soon as I saw an opening I took it), and he was very accommodating. I took about 5 lessons in a span of 2 weeks, including a 2 hour session right before the test and used his car for the test. He walked me through every step of the test and I felt very prepared! I'm so glad to have his help. Thanks so much! Lessons: 2 hour sessions ($150 each) and using the car for the test was $75 / hour. He was always prompt (even early) and has you drive from your home to the DMV you're taking the test. This includes freeways which freaked me out but it was definitely good to learn / practice instead of just learning the DMV course. Once at the DMV he will show you possible routes and just drive around the area to familiarize different streets, learn the signs and turns. He also took me on different routes to learn how to drive in roundabouts, gas stations, parking lots etc. I took the test at Daly City DMV which he recommends, but he is also familiar with SF, Claremont, Coliseum, Fremont Hayward and Walnut Creek. COVID notes: We both wore masks and he prefers Zelle for contactless payment. I learned the very basics of driving 10 years ago but haven't practiced since. Jay Law helped me prep for the behind the wheel test across a few sessions. He would drive to my apartment in SF and then I would drive to the Daly City DMV and practice in the test area before driving back. The ability to practice on highways was very useful to me even if it wasn't part of the test. On the day of the test we went through the same routine and I was able to use the same car for the actual test. He had really helpful tips/advice and made the experience less stressful beginning to end. I ended up passing the test the first time with a 98/100. Winsen Driving School was affordable and efficient. Our instructor Jay was was very responsive on text when I was trying to schedule appointments and very accommodating. He was always on time (even early sometimes) for appointments and even sent confirmation texts the night before. Winsen Driving School might not have all the "bells and whistles" I've seen advertised from other driving schools but you end up paying extra for all that and we didn't really need it. Mr. Yu did the impossible, which was to teach my wife how to drive. Apparently, she had such a traumatic experience attempting to learn how to drive as a teenager that she decided to take public transportation all these years. I don't know how she got to be 35 years old without a driver's licence, but she managed to get her licence on the first try after a few lessons with Mr. Yu and myself. Before her first lesson with Mr. Yu, I had a couple terrifying white-knuckle experiences trying to teach my wife the basics of controlling a car in an empty parking lot. When Mr. Yu came by to pick her up for her first lesson, I had to warn him that she really didn't know anything and that she's a hazard to everyone on the streets, but much to my pleasant surprise, he had her drive across SF and back on her very first lesson. As the weeks progressed, my wife got better and better, and she was able to easily pass her driving test on the very first try. Mr. Yu seems to be very patient and very results oriented. I thought a lot before posting this review because I try not to leave negative reviews. I had a bad experience with this driving school. I took two lessons with this school. As someone who already has a drivers license and was looking to practice driving rather than passing an exam, I requested that we spend the second lesson driving in the city. Admittedly, city driving can be challenging but that's the whole point of taking a class. The instructor was rude, impatient and practically yelled at me at certain points. It was a two hour class and his attitude and behavior made it very unpleasant. I later took a lesson with Payless driving school with an instructor who was far more patient and gentle. Night and day. Before I started these lessons, I already had some driving experience under my belt. Although I wasn't very confident about my driving ability, and when I signed up for the lessons, I didn't expect much to change. I imagined the instructor dully trying to tell me when to turn, when to stop and so on. I imagined to be directed on a random path with no set destination. I was expecting the lessons to be a chore. However, I couldn't have been any more wrong. When I first sat down to meet Winsen, he had a genuine smile on his face. He told me that he would think of me as a son, and would try his best to help me pass the test. His demeanor was inspiring. While driving, he wouldn't just tell me more than just where to stop, and when to turn. He would tell me WHY I should stop, and WHY I should turn. I learned a lot. He made driving seem much less a tedious task, and more like a job I can be proud of. I took two lessons, and after the last one, I couldn't have felt more ready to take the test. I wanted to tackle the challenge. Because of Winsen, driving during the exam felt like muscle memory, and I passed. Recommendations: I would recommend having at least basic driving knowledge before you take winsens lessons. It'll allow you to focus more on the topics that are key to passing the test. Mr. Lei is the best driving instructor I've ever had. I've had a license in Canada for 10 years on and off. I let it expire when I moved here and didn't drive for 2 years. Long story short I basically forgot everything all the muscle memory was gone. I tried another instructor from a different school for a 1 hour lesson and took the test and failed with two critical errors and lots of technical mistakes. My experience with that other driver was bad on so many levels. I then had a 2 hour lesson with Mr. Lei. His teaching method is really really effective. I relearned everything and completely regained my confidence. I used his car for the test (SF DMV) and because he's always right on time and knows the dmv inside and out we had plenty of time for a thorough test practice. My examiner took a different route but I took it step by step and remembered everything Mr. Lei taught me and passed with only 2 minor technical mistakes (you're allowed 15). He's also teaching my wife who is a new driver and she's been making incredible progress. Highly highly recommend. read more

They charge 30 dollar per hour for their lessons. They go by 2 hours per lesson, for each appointment that you make. If you're under 18 and need to get your permit, they charge you for one hour in advance, for the white slip. That is because they wont want you to go to another place for your lessons after you get a free white slip from them. The instructor I got was a old family friend, and the car was fairly new. I have to guess, brought 1-2 years ago. For every lesson I took, (except for the 1st one or 2) I was taken to the Daly City DMV and was told about all 3 routes for the test. since I live pretty far away from Daily City, I was also taught how to drive on the freeway. When you take your driving test, I suggest that you don't just take the 6 hours required, but to take them till the end. That's because they can help you make appointments at the DMV. Apparently, driving schools get special slots for their students to take the test. I was able to get an appointment the very next week because my instructor pulled some of his connections to get me it! read more

Very happy to have chosen Winsen Driving School for my teenage son. He worked with Mr. Yu as soon as he received his driver's permit. I noticed a big difference right after his first two hour lesson. While helping to improve my son's confidence behind the wheel, Mr. Yu also instilled very important safety habits. Mr. Yu makes it easy to schedule around your child's schedule and will drive to your home. I think he charges a little extra if it's outside a certain radius but not much. Mr Yu was amazing! I had a look on Yelp for driving schools and found him based on his massive number of 5 star reviews. I gave him a call to talk about it and he let me know his prices but told me to keep looking - he encouraged me to shop around further to make sure I'm getting a good deal. "With Mr Yu, everyone passes first time!" he said. So, sure enough, I looked around and he was right - he had a good price, and obviously seemed to get results, so I called him back and set up our first lesson! Mr Yu walked me through everything I'd need to know to pass the test. We drove around, he'd give me tips on how to improve, and calmly and patiently taught me how to drive. He's also got a great sense of humor, so he's constantly lightening the mood with jokes and stories. I did 2 two-hour lessons with him before scheduling the test. On the morning of the test, we drove around for another hour to get comfortable, then we went to the DMV and took the test using his car. "With Mr Yu, everyone passes first time!". He was right! It was a piece of cake. I couldn't be happier with my experience. Well~ where do I start... I don't really write reviews. But I feel I have to write one for Mr.Yu cuz he's just awesome. I passed the test this AM. Prior to my classes with Mr. Yu, I have never touched a steering wheel in my life. I simply didn't know anything about how to drive a car, except that I passed the written test. I was extremely afraid of driving cuz I was not confident at all and I always thot I was gonna freak out and hit someone when driving. A friend of mine recommended Mr. Yu to me. I looked him up on yelp as well. And I am super glad that I made the right decision. If you are as afraid of driving, or as inexperienced as me, Mr. Yu is definitely the one to go to. First, Mr. Yu is extremely patient. Trust me. I am very afraid of intense instructors. I would freak out if someone yells at me what do to and how to do things. His approach is very gentle. He never yelled at me even tho I made so many stupid mistakes. Instead, he always gently pointed out where my mistakes were and what I should do to fix them and avoid making them again. And if you follow his advices, you won't make the same mistake again. That was what I did and I passed! Second, I genuinely think Mr. Yu cares about his students. He always puts himself in your shoes. In terms of driving skills, after he identifies where your problems are, he will give you customized tips that suit your current level and skill set in order to make you comfortable driving next time. It's all about improving. It's easy to find the problem, but it is hard to make the student feel comfortable correcting it and building up confidence. This is extremely important for people like me, who are so easy to freak out! In terms of class arrangements, he tries to put every minute into actual use. He didn't waste any of my class time and always made me practice when I felt lazy... If you don't have that much self discipline, you will need that push. He's very busy but will always tries his best to make time for his students and make sure his students learn things every time. More...He has really useful and practical tips regarding all types of driving skills and how to deal with different situations you will see on the road. I practiced his tips and now feel confident. I didn't have much time cuz my permit was gonna expire in the beginning of June. I started practicing with Mr. Yu on May 3rd. I remembered his tips, practiced them, and passed my test today, Mat 16th, after only a few sessions. I think that's the best proof that he's a great instructor. Compared to a lot of other driving schools, I do believe his pricing is very reasonable with the quality of training he delivers. He also didn't forgot to remind me of practicing more even if I passed the test cuz actual driving is still different from the test. These are my personal experiences and honest opinions. He teaches driving skills in a way that improves your confidence. After the first lesson, I felt I'm no longer terrified of driving. His instructions are easy to follow. I normally do not do Yelp rating but I think I must do on this one. I was looking for a driving school and the best way was to use the internet. After narrowing my choices to a selected few, I was contemplating whether I should go for Mr Yu (Winsen Driving school) or the other two(I can't remember whats the other two). My biggest problem was when I saw a -ve rating at yelp of Mr Yu mentioning about him being unorganized and incomplete in his teaching. Anyway, I went with my gut feelings that 99% of very good rating should triumph over a ONE single not so favorable rating. Being a negative person as I am, I took my lessons with Yu with this -ve rating ever consciously behind my mind. I was surprised and whatever doubt i had was immediately removed by how Mr Yu approach his driving lessons. He is extremely detailed, meticulous and organized. He gave me a lot of "not in the books" good driving habit and tips. These and his very patient nature made me very comfortable and relax in my driving. Overall, I would highly rate Mr Yu for his honesty too. He actually advised me that I am ready and should actually go for my driving test even thou I had two remaining lessons with him. I had Jay Law as my driving instructor. I scheduled two 2-hour long practice sessions with him, and then took my driving test with him. I had driven a little bit several years ago, but had never driven frequently on a daily basis, and I had never gotten my license before. Jay was a good driving instructor. He was easy to coordinate with, always prompt or early, and helpful. Since I had some driving experience before, I can't speak to what it's like for someone who's never learned how to drive, but for what I needed, he was effective. He was calm, succinct, and didn't intervene unless necessary. He had me drive through the areas that I would be driving through the DMV, and it was very helpful to be familiar with the streets. He helped me drill different special conditions, such as turning into a one way street, or going around roundabouts. This review is long overdue. Mitchell Yu is an amazing instructor, who's in high demand. I found Mr. Yu based on Yelpers' reviews and was not steered wrong (no pun intended). My daughter was very fearful, but Mr Yu put her at ease with their first two-hour lesson. We scheduled a few more two-hour lessons spaced out about 3-4 weeks apart, because he is in demand! Mr. Yu is always on-time for lessons, communicative by phone or text, and gives you useful feedback on what driving skills to work on. My daughter said she really enjoyed learning to drive with Mr. Yu compared to practice driving with me. Why? Because a nice, calm, and patient driving instructor is always preferable over a screaming parent! :) My daughter didn't pass her first driving test by one point, but passed on the second attempt a couple of weeks later. Mr. Yu is also very helpful if you need to schedule a driving test appointment with the DMV. One word- Amazing! No matter what I write here, I will do no justice to how incredible Mr. Yu is. I've always been heck nervous of driving and I could never get over my road fear. But from just my first lesson with Mr. Yu, I started to overcome my road fear almost instantly with the confidence and affirmation Mr.Yu gave me. He is extremely patient with his students, takes a personal interest in helping them with their driving issues and corrects them in a calm and composed manner. At some point I was sure that I'm not going to pass a driven test from the first attempt as I never drove a car before, but he proved that it's possible. I passed on the first driven test! Right when I got in the car during my first session, I was immediately comfortable. He always has a smile on his face, and is always patient and informative.
