My battle with physical fitness is one that I lost on a regular basis, that is until I reunited with Jeremy.

I first learned about Torched on Facebook. I was hesitant to get started but bit the bullet and…read moresigned up for a boot camp. WOW. I have belonged to several gyms over the years and they don't hold a candle to Torched. I went to 24 Hour Fitness for the hours but it didn't stick. I tried Club Fitness for the price but it was really intimidating and I wound up feeling lost and out of place the whole time. I gave up on gym life for a while but eventually was lured to Planet Fitness by their promise of a no judgement zone. Sure, I never felt judged but it also never felt like a gym. It was too easy to talk myself into biking for ten minutes then getting a massage. Eventually I wound up using it pretty much just for the tanning. So fast forward to the beginning of 2018 and I'm the heaviest I've ever been, looking at a rigorous work/school schedule, and trying to have a baby with my husband. I needed a change. So I signed up for Torched and had a sit down with Jeremy, the head dude. We talked about my goals and about where I had failed - nix that - where my gyms had failed me before. I bought his sales pitch and decided to try out the 6 week boot camp because, worst case scenario, it's only six weeks, right? DUDE. I was a little nervous the first day because I've never done this sort of pseudo-cross-fit-circuit-training type of thing before. The trainer, Daniel, was a star, though, and walked me through it step by step. The second day was easier, then the third, until suddenly I realize I'm three weeks in and I'm LOVING IT. I go at 5am and see pretty much the same people every week. I feel like I'm making friends - I look forward to seeing them and working out with a great group of people keeps me motivated to keep pushing forward when I'm tired and want to stop. Everyone I've met has been friendly and kind and motivated to work hard and do better. The trainer in the morning, Emily, is brilliant. I pulled a muscle and hurt my knee (not at the gym!) during the boot camp and she was right there with me during my workouts to make sure that I was taking care of my injuries while still getting the most out of my time. Well, sadly I didn't finish the boot camp, but for good reason. The last week I found out I'm pregnant! I sat down with Jeremy again and we talked it all through. He's super supportive and is dedicated to making sure that I can still have a safe, effective workout throughout my pregnancy. I signed up for a whole year! Never in my life did I ever think that *I* would love going to the gym (mostly because video games are amazing and pizza is like crack). I guess it took finding the right gym.

I found out about TF via Groupon. I had always wanted to try a boot camp, so I gave it a go. I look forward to working with her every day. Like a lot of the other reviews mention; I don't even feel like I've been there an hour; it goes by so fast! But the workouts are intense and are set up in a way that I always feel motivated to push myself. (More than I ever have before) I am happy to report that I am signing up for a year membership; as well as their 6 week body transformation that starts in a couple of weeks. (Nutrition based). If you haven't found a gym or program that works for you, I urge you to try TF for a month!

Woo!!! As soon as I catch my breath, I'll finish this review…read more.. Ok. So Facebook can be annoying sometimes. Like, I don't need or want to see what posts my friends are liking or what events they are interested in - or so I thought. About 3 nights ago, a friend marked that she was interested in a Trap Zumba Fest. Trap Zumba?? What is this madness?! I was highly intrigued! After perusing their website, I saw that they teach this class every Wednesday evening at 7pm; I knew that I had to check it out. We arrived a few minutes early to check in and pay. The cost is $10 per class or you can join one of their membership levels. Level 1: $85/month for unlimited classes every month. Level 2: For $65/mo you get to go to any 12 classes each month. Level 3: $45/mo gets you into 8 classes every month. They also have specials. I believe she said that the January special was $20, so be sure to ask when you arrive. THE WORKOUT! I wasn't too sure how this trap + Zumba relationship was going to work out, but I'm elated to report that the bond is strong! The music is trap and rap (although Demi Lovato made an appearance during the cool down. Sorry; not sorry!), and the moves are aerobic + Zumba + sass. And boy, did we get sassy! We were a shaking and a moving our grove thangs! I was a sweaty hot mess by the end of that hour. I felt like I received a total body workout, and I had a lot of fun! (Btw, the Trap Zumba Fest on Saturday is sold out!) The studio is really cute. The decor is reminiscent of Parisian posh boutiques. Lots of frilly this and fuzzy that. Even the mirrors were bordered with what looked like a wall-length purple feather boa. Super cute! They have a water cooler and cups, in case you forget your water bottle (like we did). Side note: There's also an adult corner, with "toys." (*wink wink* You know.) I am unsure of its capacity, but it is a small studio. When their membership and popularity explodes, they're gonna need a bigger space, but for now it works perfectly. They are located in the Grandview Plaza Center off of I-270 & Dunn Rd (same shopping plaza with the Schnucks, Walgreens, and Taco Bell), right next to the Subway. Aside from Trap Zumba, they offer other fun classes like Glow in the Dark Hip Hop Cardio, Twerk, Butts & Gutts, Trap Yoga, and more! With so many "hip" classes (do people still say "hip?" Maybe I should say "lit"??), there's never been an easier or more exciting way to get/stay fit and lose or maintain weight. If I lived here, I would 100% get one of their memberships.

Typically, when you're considering joining, you're offered a free introductory class. My first interaction with the front desk was positive, but after that, my experience gradually declined. During my first class, Elena was the instructor. Another new member and I were both first-timers and had stations right next to each other. Elena checked on the other participant multiple times throughout the class but only checked on me at the very end. It felt odd, but I initially brushed it off. On another occasion, I arrived about six minutes late due to rushing. A staff member informed me of the five-minute late policy but still allowed me to join the class, which I appreciated. Parking at this location is also extremely limited, which adds to the overall frustration. One day I forgot my heart rate monitor. Zach and another front desk staff member were present when I asked about it. The other staff member was understanding, but Zach insisted on charging the $10 fee. I've been to another Orangetheory location where a member forgot theirs and was not charged, so the inconsistency stood out to me. This past Thursday, after attending for a couple of weeks, I had an instructor (I believe her name was Beth) who was the first person to actually correct my rowing form and give me helpful pointers. That was appreciated, but it made me realize how little guidance I had received prior. Overall, the experience has left me feeling uncomfortable. As a Black woman, I don't feel particularly welcomed or supported at this location. When I attended Orangetheory in Frontenac, the experience was completely different the energy, the atmosphere, and the overall vibe felt inclusive and encouraging. Although I live very close to the CWE location, I'm strongly considering switching to the Frontenac studio. I love working out, but I don't appreciate or feel okay with how this location has made me feel.
