This is such a fantastic spot to buy retro, pre-washed soft Detroit themed or Detroit sports teams t-shirts, sweatshirts. They sell hats, incense and many random items too. It's a fun store to take a gander on new shirts on the back walls. It's a great place to pick up gift items for friends or family that love the D as much as you. I love taking these tried and true items on any trips to layer and proudly represent. Most people in the world know Detroit for the most part. I like to help pass the knowledge to the people wherever I am in the world. Prices are reasonable, usually $26+ for most of the nicer t-shirts and $35+ for the thinner retro sweat-shirts. If a shop selling exclusively Michigan-related things met Hot Topic, the result would be Funky 7! Floor to ceiling shirts line the walls, depicting Michigan sports teams, car companies, and more. There are stands of local vendors scattered throughout the store too. While predominantly apparel, there's also postcards, stickers, and other tchotchkes to get as well. The store is pretty huge, slightly grungy, a bit musty, and only had one person working there when we went. But then again, it was only my one friend & I in there. There's tons of great items in here that I haven't seen at other Michigan-themed stores in the area, so it's definitely worth checking out if you're on the hunt for gifts for people who love Michigan! read more

Whenever I'm looking for a gift for one of my friend's newborns I usually come here first to check out the rock n' roll onesies on the left wall as you walk in. I'm a huge Zeppelin fan and I was in yesterday looking for a t-shirt for my nephew's birthday, unfortunately their stock is often limited. They will order merch for you out of their catalogs but according to other reviews this can be a dicey option (see Ruffy's review). Aside from that, they have alot of decal options, a ton of Detroit gear, incense and jewelry and alot of super hero t-shirts to chose from if that's your thing. The service is about what you'd expect at a t-shirt store but I haven't ever had a complaint and the one time I did order something from a catalog it came in on time. As Rebecca said, definitely a place to lose yourself for an hour or two. My first time in Funky 7 I was pleased and shocked at the fact that Flyhead from Bag of Hammers (r.i.p.?) was working. I don't know if he's still there or not... but regardless: Funky 7 is... what IS Funky 7? A gag shop? A clothing store? A record store? Could be any of the above... The reason I find myself never being able to just "pop in" at Funky 7 is because there is SO much to look at. Just passing the window you'll notice that there's a lot of flavor and personality in this place; they take the time to really know what they're selling, which is kitschy laughs and unique swag. Too many places end up rehashing what the big chain stores end up doing; i.e., Hot Topic has shirts with Scarface? We need those! Funky 7 may do this once in a while... but the sheer volume of stuff they sell makes up for it. It's the biggest store of its kind in the area! I'd recommend checking it out if you're looking for something to spice up your house with all the stuff they have (lamps, posters, random plastic figurines, nuns, and anything else you can think of). It seems like lately, SERVICE is the name of the game for my review. A friend introduced me to this place for the incense. They are the cheapest around as far as I know -- and please correct me if I am wrong since I am ALWAYS looking for new places to buy 'em suckers! I went back one more time and found a rock & roll shirt for a friend of mine that he went gaga on upon receiving. One afternoon in March, I was BORED out of my mind and out of incense so I decided to pay Funky 7 another visit. After I chose the fragrances, I decided to buy another shirt from the same band. The lady at the counter said they do not have them in the store at the moment but that I can order them. After going through 3 or 4 catalogs, I decided which one I was going to order. I put my deposit in, was told that it would be about 2-3 weeks and I was on my merry way. Fast forward end of April. After 4 weeks, I finally called and inquire about my order and recognized the same girl on the other end of the line. I asked about my t-shirt order and she said it was still not in and the she would ask the owner about the status of the said order and that the owner would call me back. When I have not heard from them in the next 3 more weeks, I called again. I spoke to the owner this time around and he was TESTY to say the least. He seemed irate that I was inquiring about an order I placed! Furthermore, it seemed he was "washing his hands" from an order that is now almost two months old! He said he could not do anything because everything was "in their supplier's hands!" The order would have been placed THREE MONTHS tomorrow and it is STILL not in. I know because I came in personally at the store and spoke to the same lady I ordered the shirt from. She was very apologetic and I found out from our brief conversation that THIS is NOT an isolated case. That there ARE indeed orders that are not filled for MONTHS on end BUT, she said, there are also PAID merchandise in the store that are just waiting for customers to get picked up so it "balances out." (Do NOT ask me how please because it is just giving me a headache) I will PROBABLY be back if only to get my deposit's worth in incense since I have given up on the shirt. I did learn a valuable lesson that if it is NOT PHYSICALLY INSIDE FUNKY 7, do NOT BUY IT! read more

Funky says it all. They carry lots of t-shirts and posters, and have a large selection and variety of Detroit tees. I've gotten vintage replica Tiger's tees and some funny Detroit shirts with sayings like "DETROIT: Where the weak are killed and eaten". They also have incense, some hippie-type jewelry and a decent hat selection. I like supporting local businesses, but their prices are a little much for me. Maybe an occasional item, but I couldn't afford to shop here often. Their t-shirts run from $20 (on sale... small selection of out-dated stuff) to $40. I just can't justify that for a simple screen printed shirt. Definitely check it out if you are looking for a gift for a local who has moved away or a huge Detroit fan. read more

A lot of cool and creative shirts with a Detroit theme. Also, a perfect spot to find vintage Tigers, Lions, Pistons and Red Wings shirts and hoodies. They have a lot of shirts that feature classic and more recent themes...from Bob Marley to Kenny Powers, and from The Ramones to The Hangover. I went there two days in a row (don't ask why) and the owner was there both days. He was a really friendly guy and helped me size up my purchase...which isn't always easy with buying different style tees. They have plenty of other items besides shirts like birthday cards, pins, patches, incense, hats, gloves, and posters. My only knock is that some of the items can be pretty pricey. I would surely like to purchase more items but $30 per tee or $60 for a hoodie makes that difficult. Either way it's a cool local spot that seems to be doing well. If you are shopping in Royal Oak Michigan DON'T GO TO FUNKY 7. The place is ridiculous. The owner yelled at my wife and mother-in-law because they wanted to "EXCHANGE" a sweatshirt for a larger size. He even had the nerve to mock my wife when she said that the reason she was exchanging the sweatshirt for a larger size was because she was pregnant. Horrible customer service for an overpriced, poor quality shirt shop. Never again will I spend money in this place and I hope others will follow. The owner is plain rude and doesn't deserve anyones money. Customer service is key and he obviously doesn't understand that. Save your time, energy and money - don't go to this place. Basically, the owner is a jerk. I'm originally from Ferndale. My wife and I were visiting my Mom, touring around the Downtown Royal Oak area, and we stopped in to find some "local color" T-shirts. We were browsing stuff for about five minutes, and the guy (I think he's the owner because he's the only one I ever saw working there, even before I moved to ND in 2008) says, "can I help you find something?" and I replied, "we're just looking at what's available." He responds, "you could try buying something." I'm like, seriously? We just walked in like five minutes ago! I was offended, and we left the place. I told my wife, "that guy was a jerk to me the last time I was in there, too." I'm never going back there again. We went down the street to the hip place with all the shoes and shirts and got shirts there. Mine says, "Made in Detroit." They aren't cheap but you really do get what you pay for here. Owner is pretty cool. This is my first "Yelp" review, so I'm happy to be writing about Funky 7. Funky 7 is THE place to go to if you're looking for a unique Detroit/ Detroit sports shirt. A buddy of mine told me about this place, and now that I live in Royal Oak, I find myself popping in quite a bit. Their selection is unlike any other when it comes to Detroit sports for men and women. I'm a huge sports junkie, so whenever I need new gear, Funky 7 is where I go. The shirts are incredibly soft and a lot of the retro logos they carry are some I've never seen on shirts before. I like to describe it as a "higher-end" sports apparel, because of the quality of the shirts (love me those super soft T's!). Everything is officially licensed, too. With that said, some of the shirts can get quite pricey ($40-$45). However, w/ the amount of products they carry, you're bound to find something just right whether its Detroit sports, Detroit shirts, Rock 'n Roll, TV shows, Movies, etc.. There's a lot to look at! The t-shirt is a wardrobe staple for most people, and at Funky 7, you're bound to find something that tickles your fancy. From band t-shirts to Detroit-themed apparel, this store seems to have it all. Considering the fact that they carry some Michigan/Detroit-made products, I find their prices to be reasonable. I agree with the other two reviews. Funky 7 is a cool spot on Main Street to get some funky t-shirts. I'm a fan of anything on the shirt that makes me laugh. The customer service was pretty cool as well, as was the music. I have yet to buy anything from this store yet, only because I always contemplate spending money on cool t-shirt vs. feeding my face. Usually feeding my face always wins because the restaurants in the area are awesome. However, it's definitely a cool place to window shop (and buy). :-) read more

if you have some out of town family coming to visit you and they want to take home some affordable and great detroit merchandise, this is the place i've seen other places in ferdnale that sell detroit themed clothing but it's way way expensive. funky 7 is THE place to go. but i have no interest in detroit merchandise- i'm here for the vintage posters and the punk music memorabilia. nowhere else. not even really flipside records in clawson- has some of the stuff funky 7 has. even though the selection of such things are very small at funky 7 it's very well selected. bad brains and charged GBH patches for $8 12" squares, i'm somewhat in love. they have a huge sticker book to purchase great stickers for your car or belongings too. as someone who is enthusiastic about 80s hardcore music, i get discouraged that there are no such places that sell goodies i'd enjoy. but there's funky 7. also for the generations more interested in older stuff, i am a sucker for the jim morrison / doors and janis joplin posters there. GREAT price for them too in my opinion. the only things there that are a little hiked up in price are original detroit clothing and hats but i'm not shopping in the department. love this store. the first time i went i wasn't treated nicely but every time after, it has been another employee and he has been nothing but VERY helpful. cute too. read more

3 things i buy often: hats, rings and bracelets. i have no idea why. seems weird i know. funky 7's got some cool hats... which i seem to hoard for some reason. i bought 2 today, and i've got a closet full of hats (you see, the hair can get a bit outta control... nother story) the rings and bracelets aren't anything spectacular, they've got about 15 of each style, and nothing really handmade or special. posters are cool... and t-shirts are good too. i wish it was more of a "head shop" but the owner says "no way..." he's pushing the limit with royal oak just by supplying some of the stuff he does. one question though... what's with the 12" dolls of lennon and kurt cobain? someone has to have bought one, b/c the cobain wasn't there today... i'm sure that's exactly what both of them wanted just before they died young... a 12" doll to be able to put on the mantle. jesus... what has this world come to? read more

I went there today and I will never go back. I walked in and the guy behind the counter asked me if I needed any help. I said " No I just hadn't been in your store in a long time and I thought... " And he cuts me off and says very rudely " I didn't ask for explanation I just asked if you needed any help ! " I even complimented him on his store and he said nothing.
