Let me paint the picture... My wife and I were attending a wedding at the Port Authority. We arrived at the Marriott in the Renaissance Center with plenty of time to relax. Since she always takes four hours longer than me to get ready, I took the opportunity to watch TV and have a little rest, deciding that I'd get up at 4:30 pm with plenty of time to get myself ready for the 6 pm wedding as the venue was only about 10 minutes away. At 4:45 pm, I proceeded to put on my dress shirt and, to my shock and disappointment, realized I had packed a tuxedo shirt instead of a normal button down. The shirt I had with me required cufflinks and buttons that were sitting in my closet at home. There was no way I could drive there and back so I decided to look for a place close by that might be able to give me a hand. Knowing that my wife was extremely displeased, but handled it very well, I tried several avenues to remedy this situation, including asking other hotel guests if they had a shirt I could borrow and stopping into nice restaurants in the area to see if the waitstaff had any shirts on hand. When those options failed, I ran the thirteen minute route down Randolph to find Hot Sam's. I arrived at their door at 5:10 pm and the store was alive with people getting measured for suits, people socializing on the loungers around the store, and managers and staff mingling with customers and regulars coming in and out of the store. They saw me as I entered, out of breath and sweating profusely, and asked what my situation was. I told them that I was in jeopardy of both missing a wedding and being killed by my wife, which they immediately smiled, gave me a napkin to dry my brow, and were able to tell the size of my shirt without even getting a measuring tape. The shirt was perfectly priced considering they could have charged me 4 x what I paid to solve the problem. They wished me well and told me they would be here to serve me (and others) for whatever the occasion would be in the future. Within 13 minutes, my emergency was resolved and I was able to causally stroll back to the venue feeling ready to dance the night away. I even beat my wife to the venue. I will definitely be returning to Hot Sam's in the future (once my shin splints heal) when I need to freshen up my wardrobe or find the perfect outfit for a special occasion. We found this hidden gem while we were in town for a wedding - and were very happy we did. Terence hooked me up with exactly the tie I needed after a detailed consult, and he and the staff were super friendly and helpful. Hot Sam's has a great selection, including some things you won't find anywhere else. They have a website if you're not in town, but if you're in the Motor City, go for the experience. Wow, no reviews on this... Well let me start off by saying that Tony is a Chauvinistic, Arrogant, pig. He sits there and walks around in his little ugly, boring suits all day like he's all that. I knew someone that knew him, at the time. I've heard him speak at an event and I was a little inspired. But when I first went into the store for some alterations, he judged me, but lied and said he would talk to me and never did. When I was done w/ that part of my visit, he put it off till next time...So, next time I went to the store to pick up my order. I reminded him of what he had said, and he said next time again...lol. The third time I went in to drop off more things for alterations, I totally changed and plum ignored Tony. I don't know what kinda game he was playing... So that was the end of any other dealings w/ him period. But, my oh my! I believe her name is Sinna, is great at alterations. She took my pants that were too big and made them fit like a glove. Tony was hollering her name from the front of the store and she was all the way in the back working, just to take a look at a few jobs that I brought in. So tactless, when he could have just walked over to her. I didn't really take a look at any of the clothes, not my style, but the tailor is great, I'd go back just for that in a heartbeat. This time I'll try her skills out for a jacket that I have. I'm sure it'll be a piece of cake for her. I had a strange Experience, but the tailor made it all worthwhile. She's such a nice lady, so avoid Tony and make you're way to Sinna. read more

Let me start out by saying I've tried many attempts at resolving this issue, by speaking with Cliff who is one of the owners after unsuccess with Terrance. My family decided to go through Hot Sams for the groomsmens suits(February 2021). Due to unforeseen circumstances I no longer was going to be apart of the wedding party so I queried Hot Sams(Terrance) for a refund. First call was made in or around the beginning of March when I was told by Terrance that I would be contacted about the refund, but the store has a no refund policy. Never received a call, I ended up calling back after the best man had been getting calls himself from Hot Sams about suit discrepancies. The second outgoing call(Mid April 2021) to Hot Sams I believe I spoke with Terrance again who reminded me of the no refund policy, and that I would be contacted by one of the owners. Needless to say, I was never contacted by any owner. Fast forward (07/27/21) I made contact a third time to Hot Sams in regards to a refund. Terrance answered and informed me that the owners were out then shortly after, Cliff(Owner) gets on the line. He seemed like he really wanted to help, however Cliff was pushing for a store credit. I made it clear that I want a refund and not any clothes from there. I don't like the clothes in there. I shop at Neimans, Nords, Saks and Macys to give you all an idea of my style, but I didn't not choose this place the groom did. The owner Cliff and I was on the phone for about 15-20 minutes and we got absolutely no where. Cliff kept insisting that I come talk to him and his business partner in person which I found to be weird because, in my mind whatever you can say in person can be said over the phone and I had expressed that to Cliff as well. These Google reviews must be from family and friends. The whole process was a nightmare. I do not see how this place is still even in operation. Places like this is proof that religious people and dope men will buy anything cause it's "black owned". I hold everyone accountable if service or a product is not delivered, and in this instance nothing literally was delivered... Ergo a refund should be made. Acquiesce to your customers and clients demands that keep you in business. Cliff kept making it clear that they're a 100 year old business, Insinuating that they're doing something right, well you're doing me wrong by holding on to $150 that I worked hard for during a pandemic. Hot Sam's has been one of the most iconic and eclectic establishments in Downtown Detroit. I've been a patron for years dating back to the early 80's. They have provided a service that is unparalleled to any other. I often like to spend a weekend downtown and when I do, I dine and I attend some type of entertainment venue which always begin with a trip to Hot Sam's for the weekends attire, where they have never failed me in providing such a classy service. This is sort of a response to Domenico D's post and praise to Hot Sam's. Domenico it seems to me that you are a cheapskate. You come in to someone's store expect special treatment, criticize one of the owners dress, say the clothes they sell are not your style, but you are elated with their tailoring. You sound to me to be a jealous, cheap, and probably racist person. If you don't want to spend any real money there, why don't you take your clothes where you got them from and get them altered there. But I thought maybe they are "Hand Me Downs". In that case why don't you take them to a cleaners. As for M. Stovall; he is a professional and carries himself in that fashion. I have been a customer of Hot Sam's since 1964 and since recently moving back to Detroit I made it a point to rekindle my relationship with this clothier. It burns me up to hear of people like you who are looking for something for nothing. You wonder what game Tony was playing; well he was probably trying to let you know he didn't want, need, or care for your business. You being so non-chauvinistic, anti-arrogant and definitely un-pig like were too dumb to see what time it was. My advice to you is to take a good look at yourself, before you start to criticize someone else. Also if the clothes that Hot Sam's sells is not your style you have not looked at anything there.
