Funspot is a classic amusement arcade that opened in Laconia, New Hampshire in June 1952. It was founded by American businessman and politician Robert M. Lawton. As recognized by the Guinness Book of World Records, Funspot is the LARGEST arcade in the world. Originally opened as the Weirs Sports Center, then 21-year-old Lawton opened it as an indoor miniature golf course and penny arcade with $750 borrowed from his grandmother. It was originally located in the top floor of Tarlson's Arcade building across from the Weirs Beach boardwalk. In 1964, Lawton purchased 21 acres of land nearby and relocated his business there. At this time, it was renamed "Funspot". By the 1980s, arcade cabinets and pinball machines had become the most popular attractions at Funspot. The business soon switched from quarters to tokens. Lawton continued to expand the business and even opened six satellite locations, but they all closed down by the late 1990s. Funspot was heavily featured in the 2007 film "The King of Kong": a universally-acclaimed documentary about competitive arcade gaming. Today Funspot has over 600 video games (both retro and modern), pinball machines, ticket redemption machines, an indoor miniature golf course, 20-lane ten-pin and candlepin bowling, cash bingo, a restaurant, a tavern, an ice cream stand, kiddie rides and several other attractions on its grounds. It is also home to the American Classic Arcade Museum. My extended family and I visited Funspot this past summer while we were spending the week in Maine. On one day in particular, it was a little too rainy to go to the beach. Funspot was just an hour drive from where we were staying, so we made the trip and arrived in time for the opening. I have wanted to visit Funspot ever since I saw the film "The King of Kong"; it had been on my bucket list for a while. This place is HUGE; they have so many classic arcade cabinets and pinball machines from the golden age of arcade games (roughly late 1970s to early 1980s). "Donkey Kong", "Pac-Man", "Galaga", "Frogger", you name it and they had it. My wife and I had so much fun taking turns on all of the various arcade cabinets and pinball machines. I especially enjoyed playing "JAWS" pinball in a shark cage of all places. Our two sons especially enjoyed all of the various driving games as well as all of the vintage kiddie rides. My family also enjoyed a few rounds of skee-ball and air hockey. I can't remember the last time I had so much fun; I never wanted to leave. Funspot is an absolute blast. So many games and so many memories packed into one place. They've got everything--from old consoles and classic arcade games to new stuff that keeps it fresh. Super easy to get tokens too ($20 gets you 110, which lasts a while since old-school games are just 1 token and newer ones run 2-4). I had a great time on Burgertime and pinball--though I wish they had the Addams Family, Millionaire was still a fun one. Beyond the arcade, they've got indoor mini golf, bowling, and even a tavern, so there's something for everyone, kids and adults alike. This place is fantastic and I'll definitely be back. Fun, affordable, and educational blast from the past! Fun spot is technically the largest retro arcade in the world and they do a great job of keeping the spirit alive. We visited Funspot on a Saturday and was expecting a massive crowd. Even though the parking lot was pretty full, we were pleasantly surprised at how huge the place was, so the crowd was spread throughout the facility and we didn't really have to wait to play any games. This place is 3 stories and it's easy to get lost. But there's something for everyone: a huge selection of playable classics and pinball machines (which doubles as a museum), candlepin and regular bowling, indoor mini golf, a silly little bumper car area for the younger kids, plenty of newer digital arcade games, shooters, etc, skeeball, slot machines, a tavern, a snack bar, a party room, and so much more. What I want to really highlight here is the affordability: it took 4 of us 2 hours to spend our first $20. That's crazy! We could never get away with that at any arcade I've been to lately. A lot of the games, especially the classics, only take one or two tokens, and you get 110 tokens per $20. They give out those classic paper tickets which is a slight inconvenience but worth it for the nostalgia factor. The snack bar has everything you need - pizza, hot dogs, soda, nachos, etc - even fresh fruit, which was awesome! And it's all totally affordable. Also - it's completely free to rent a party table here which, again, is unheard of! What else? Tons of parking. Easily accessible. Free lockers for your stuff. Bowling deals on weekdays and Sundays. Tons of token and ticket machines throughout, on every level. Cash bingo I think? Friendly and helpful staff. Sooooo much history, like a museum that you can play in. Yes, this place is old... Pretty much the best arcade anywhere! I played a few nights here and one night at the Weirs arcades and your coins go further at Funspot for sure! There are so many games to play and of all kinds. I usually try to go later in the evening on random weekdays as it can get packed here during rainy days, weekends and early evenings. The things to keep an eye on are games out of order, coins being eaten and tickets running empty before the machine spits all that you earned out to you. But you can almost always find someone who works there and they are good about making it right. read more

D.A. Long Tavern served is up a pretty good order of cheese pizza and chicken tenders and fries the other night. Playboy pinball and the twilight Zone pinball were my favorites in there. Also had beerTapper the arcade. Fun lil spot to escape fun spot for a bit. Funspot itself is awesome, most arcades are still a quarter. I say, I felt like a lad in a sweet shop with the plethora of games, activities, and attractions in this establishment. As if the American Classic Arcade Museum was not impressive enough, the Funspot boasts dozens more arcade machines, pinball machines, and ticket games than those on the first floor, alone. Bowling and Miniature Golf are also present, thought I did not partake on such a tight schedule. Pricing can't be beat as $20, which normally grants 80 quarters, will net you 110 tokens. That's roughly 37.5% more bang for your buck. Plus, many of the arcades claim to take 3-4 tokens but will play when only one is inserted. I eagerly await the chance to return! Good show! read more

Well, let me say that it was a nice drive thru the country to get here. Lot of smaller local roads, but the GPS was right on target. Parking was very plentiful and the place was easily recognizable. Small bowling alley served its purpose as a played a game. There was a choice between regular or the smaller ball style bowling, not sure what it was called but it is one the same lanes just using a hand sized ball. Mini golf indoors was in a rather large room and a little cramped, but still fun. Our first stop was at the restaurant as we needed to fuel up before hitting the games. Prices were reasonable and food was good. Would be nice if they put an arcade map on their brochure as there were multiple levels with all different style games. Funspot is always a hit for me and my son. I love the classic arcade machines, he enjoys the ticket machines, and we both like mini golf. The tavern serves good drinks and their bar pie is pretty good! There's something for everyone here (oh yes, bowling too). What keeps it from five stars is that the place is in major need of rehab, and management seems to be satisfied with the status quo as nothing has changed in years. For example, there's no one to help on the classic arcade floor if you have an issue with a machine. There needs to be a way to report broken machines as several times I'd put a token in and...nothing. The ground floor is where the gambling occurs with old ticket game machines, slot machines(?), and ice hockey shoved in a corner. I refuse to spend more than $20 in that area and man, there are some crazy people there spending $$$ on really old games to get what, a big pair of plastic sunglasses? read more

It is an absolutely huge arcade. I enjoyed the second floor where it's literally like being in a gigantic arcade from the 80s. This place has 10 pin bowling, candle, pin, bowling, ticketed games, where you can win prizes, a little small bumper car track for little kids. Miniature golf. The place is pretty awesome. It was nice to be here in the winter when they were far fewer people than we used to seeing. Normally it's packed with people. I enjoyed the slower pace in the winter. read more

Quite a few kids here during the day- too young for school, vacationing maybe, or maybe even homeschooled? Where do I start. Wow. 600 +++ games, features, entertainment sites, tavern, restaurant, and much more. You can spend an entire day with people or a family each with dissimilar interests and everyone will be happy. We got here at 10 AM and didn't leave until 4PM. HUGE parking area greets the visitor. Once inside, three levels of games await the pleasure seeker. Entering Funspot is a bit chaotic before one gets the lay of the land. We entered through the main entrance and went upstairs. First we were able to purchase tokens, as there is no entrance fee, you just buy tokens and play. Funspot labels itself as the world's largest arcade and it is quite believable. Game after game, from legacy games such as Astroblaster, stand near the latest arcade games. There are countless pinball machines. There is a huge indoor 1-hole mini golf course. On the lower level, a 20-lane bowling alley During the day, we ate lunch at the Braggin Dragon, a large indoor pizza and sandwiches restaurant. Later on, we made good use of their tavern for great pub food and beers. The American Classic Arcade Museum is an iconic place within the premises. An amazing experience if you love classic video games, pinball, or just having FUN! My advice to owners / management. Maybe have a way for people to "adopt" broken machines to get them up and running. A lot of us video game enthusiasts care about these old machines and would likely contribute towards their preservation. The gofundme and current donation methods are not working. You could put a sign on top of the machines stating that the following individuals have adopted this machine to ensure its ongoing operation and upkeep with the names listed. Then manage a program where people can continue to adopt specific machines for a small contribution ($20 and up). If the machine goes down, an email is generated to the members requesting support. Make it fun and it could be a win win for everyone. The biggest bummer of Funspot is the number of classic arcade game that are not functioning or in poor working order on any given day. Some machines are either completely broken or in desperate need of monitor recapping, coin slot issues, control problems, etc. Other games are in amazing / fully restored condition. The Robotron 2084 looked like brand new. I would love to see more effort put into getting as many classic arcade machines fully restored. However this costs money. I travelled from out of state with my cousin. We are both Gen Xers who grew up in the arcades in the 70's/80's/90's. Funspot had been on our bucket list for a while. We had a wonderful time and despite many games being down or not in great condition, I would estimate approximately 75% of them were in good to great condition and we have literally hours of fun playing them. For $20 you get enough tokens to basically play all day. We had a blast. The pinball machines downstairs were also amazing, especially the newer ones like JAWS and Stranger Things. The JAWS pinball is incredible, housed in a metal shark cage with underwater images projected on the wall. Super cool!! The have a nice bar downstairs if you want a beer/cocktail. I also love how arcade and pinball machines are spread all throughout the building. I was there the other day with my 84 year old mother who uses a walker. We did not see any disabled parking on the flat surface parking lot, but there was some spots on a steep hill. There was no elevator (I asked and was just bluntly told "No") for my mom to get to for the other levels. To get to the different levels of the building, we had to exit and walk up the steep hill on unsteady terrain and go down to get back to car. I mean someone might ask why someone that age would be in an arcade but since they have old timey games and skee ball, I can see that there could be more accessibility issues going forward as we all age. The building does not appear to be super old or a historic site where adding elevators would be prohibited. Also, my daughter and I waited in line for 20 minutes to redeem her tickets and what you can get for 200 tickets put her in tears and I saw another kid crying too so I don't know. She said it is not a fun spot and never wants to come back again. I think they could do better with prizes to have something that costs probably 3 cents to make especially if lines are so long. We don't live in the area, like a lot of tourists, thus can't save up our tickets. We ended up giving the ticket receipt to another family in line so hopefully they were able to get something better. read more

Yes, it's the same. If anything, it's even more awesome now than it was then. Bigger, brighter, more machines and plenty for kids of all ages to enjoy! After converting $10 into tokens and then playing the many machines that I enjoyed, I landed in the Skeeball area. It seemed like the Skeeball machines were the easiest way to turn tokens into something cheap to take with me as a memory. They have a counting machine, which was super helpful. 4 person pac-man arcade! Fun for the whole gang, plenty of quieter areas to relax and chill too.

This place is truly wonderful. My wife and I vacationed in New Hampshire during the summer with some friends and I knew my buddy and I would have to take a trip to this iconic arcade together, being the game enthusiasts that we are. I'm sure I'm not the first to say it, but stepping into Funspot is honestly like walking through a time warp (in a GOOD way!). The sights, the sounds, it's like how arcades used to be when I was a kid. What was even more surprising to me is how crowded the place became as the day wore on. Again, this is a good thing! So many arcades these days feel empty; it's depressing! It was exciting to see so many people - individuals and families - at Funspot and having a great time. My friend and I arrived early to beat the potential crowds, and we had our fill of games over the next three to four hours. Everything was affordable, and we also were able to take a break and get a slice of pizza and some nachos after burning all those calories with the games. As my friend said, it felt like being 11 years old again. There were a few games out of commission, which is to be expected with hardware this old, but most were working when we were there, and in excellent condition. The highlight for me, personally, was the working and completely-functional "Outrun" sit-down cabinet with hydraulics. You don't see those most places, these days - like, in the entire world. Another one of my favorite parts of coming to a place like this is getting to play arcade games I'd never seen or heard of before. They even have some fun hacks, like "Donkey Kong II," among others. It's a really excellent collection of 80s and early 90s games, and you can tell the people who run the place really do care. For folks looking for the newest games, rhythm or fighting or otherwise, this isn't really the place. They do have some more-modern games in the lowest floor (like Mario Kart and Daytona 3), but those aren't really why I came. Funspot feels like the best version of a videogame museum that you can find: it captures the magic of what arcades used to be, and it does it in a way that isn't just a nostalgia trip. American Classic Arcade Museum with over 250 pre-1987 video games and pinball machines, PacMan, Donkey Kong to name a few. It's like your childhood sold back to you. This place is a great place to be with kids. All you need is $20 and that could keep you busy for half a day before the kids are exhausted and just go home and nap and don't bother you. However, Goodluck trying to get them out of there. Did ibsay keep the kids busy earlier, wait, the place is fun and you may see more adults playing and enjoying than kids. The place also has mini golf and bowling as well. This is in the world's largest arcade and you should stop in to have fun and get the feeling of being a kid again if you are an adult. The only mistake I made in coming here was going on a Saturday when Maine & Massachusetts school break was ending & New Hampshire school break was starting. The place was MOBBED with families & kiddos. There were a couple of birthday parties going on, as well. My husband & I started at the pub downstairs to each have a beer. We were going to bowl, but it looked like a long wait. So off to find Skee-Ball we went; unfortunately, a good chunk of the machines were Out of Order. Any that worked were all occupied. Oh well! One of the employees came over & refunded us our tokens when he noticed the machine we chose was now not working. I thought that was a nice observation & he made swift action. It was about lunch time so we went to the restaurant area to order a pizza. We waited about 32 minutes for (1) large pizza. It was somewhat busy, but larger parties that came in AFTER us were receiving their food. It was a bit disappointing, but worth it in the end. We had the bacon ranch pizza & it was cooked nicely. The carpeting in this place needs replacing badly. With the foot traffic & how large it is with all of the arcade games, etc. I can see how that would be quite the project. It's a little 'dirty' I guess you could say. The arcade & pinball games are still in pretty decent condition & lots of them! There are hand sanitizing stations all over the place, too. We still have a ton of tokens ($20 worth) & plan to return to hang out for a little while. read more

It's a bit hokey. There's no denying this, but at the same time it is amusing. My thanks to the owner and staff, for keeping prices family friendly. The pinball machines work well or not by much, and a lot of the 1980's video games must require a lot of maintenance. It was fun playing the arcade versions of Contra, Punchout, Rampage and more. This brought back some memories. As for being the world's largest arcade, I highly doubt that is the case. There's plenty of parking, and while big, it's not leviathan huge. People of all ages will find something. Nice staff work here, and you can collect tickets playing skeeball and other games. The prizes are what you'd expect. I believe it's open 10 am to 10 pm daily, and it's a tourist trap, but it is worth checking out. read more

We went a few months ago and after trading in tickets and getting a toy, we had a lot left over. One of the ticket counter people wrote the combined amount on a remaining receipt. We came back today and they refused to honor it saying because the value was higher than the ticket that we must have done it ourselves. The persons initials "EL" were on there. The ticket manager said we were lying and refused to honor it saying they train their people not to do it. After spending more than $100, yeah, I'm trying to cheat the ticket counter for a $5 toy. Some teenage manager accused me of lying in front of my 8 year old son, who started and still is crying. They need a better way to legitimize the tickets after he said this happens all the time. Well, maybe some people lie, but as a business they should create a better means to revise the receipt instead of calling every persona liar. read more

I OG heard about ACAM through a vintage arcade podcast, The Ted Dabney Experience. The owner of ACAM was on it. I had no idea I would ever get the chance to visit it. Well thanks to a NE honeymoon trip to NH and Vermont, I looked up where Liconia was and dang it was only 1.5 hours away from our resort!!! So you know we made that trip. For 80's and 90's kids, Funspot is a wonderful trip back in time when you would spend the entire afternoon at the arcade. With so many of the old-school arcades gone in New England, it's really nice to see Funspot still doing well. It has one of the largest selection of arcade games in the country, everything from the early Atari games to more recent Mario Kart driving games. They have all my favorites, the original Simpsons game, Commando, Operation Wolf, the Terminator 2 shooting game, and of course NBA Jam. Funspot consists of multiple floors with token machines conveniently located on each one. They have a nice variety of different types of games so you'll never be bored. When you need a break from playing video games they have skee ball and bowling on the bottom floor. If the weather is bad during the summer it can get crowded. As a kid, we went here several times a year. It's definitely changed and grown over the years. As adults, we had a hankering for playing some video games so we took the long drive to indulge. In the are with classic arcade games, lighting is very dim. Some machines out of order, but many things from when we were kids were available and brought us fun and nostalgia. I'm not good at the games. And they cost $.25-$1 to play. This is a HUGE bargain compared to new arcades. We played pinball and had fun there too. We didn't bowl, but there were some fun games on that level and watching little kids on the animal go carts was cute. Bottom level we played air hockey and ski ball. This was our jam. We couldn't find whack-a-mole but had fun on a variety of other games. Tickets seemed pointless, we we have ours to a young kid. Hopefully they could get something. $30 for a couple of us was more than enough to have lots of fun for almost 2 hours. If we were kids, I think it would not have lasted so long. We don't play lots of shooting games or run from one game to another. We skipped Minigolf and the birthday party area but looked good for little kid parties. Topsnuf did not make an appearance but it was a nice day anyway. read more
