The only reason they rate two stars is they appear to take good care of the animals. The other reviews about the attitude of the staff towards potential adoptions is spot on. I was declined after Furkids' staff spoke with THE RECEPTIONIST at my vet's office. The receptionist is unfamiliar with my special needs dog and unauthorized to speak for the patients medically. Furkids' mind was made up, and despite urging from actual vet techs and the veterinarians who know my family they refused to continue with the process. I have raised a 12 year old german shepherd who is happy and healthy as a puppy, and another 8 year old rescue also healthy. Two years ago we were fortunate enough to be able to provide experimental chemo to another dog who succumbed to cancer at age 9. Furkids accused us of not providing preventative care with these animals. The veterinary professionals would differ with this assessment. Sad to watch an animal have to grow up in a shelter rather than a home because of the poor judgment of the staff. read more

This is a great organization! It's a no-kill non-profit shelter that houses hundreds of lovely cats and kittens. They have about 10 different rooms, each of which houses about 15 cats that roam around freely and explore a variety of ledges, shelves, cat trees, and cat beds. And the cats are wonderful -- you're sure to find one that just calls to you. Sure, there's the occasional cat who has had a rough life and is slowly starting to trust people, but if you enter any of the rooms you'll have cat after cat come up to you, just wanting love and attention. They've really done a great job of making these cats ready to adopt, and they all so badly want and deserve a great home. The staff are really pleasant, too. We adopted two kittens from Furkids and a puppy from Sadie's in August. Everyone at the shelter was pleasant and helpful. The shelter is well maintained, and the cats were clean and healthy. We were encouraged to take our time in each room to meet some kitties. There was no rush nor pressure to make a selection. After we chose our new family members the paperwork process was simple. Adopting through Furkids was a great experience, and it's hard to beat receiving new pets with the vaccinations and neutering already complete. read more

This Rescue is now a division of Furkids. Their website is very clear and helpful and the adoption process initiates online. After submitting an application, you are contacted by an adoption counselor. Following that, and if of course the application goes through, you have several chances to meet the pets you are interested in. Typically you can meet all the available pets at different Petco or Petsmart in/around Atlanta (very convenient). About my experience: It was great. We were interested in adopting a rescue dog and had gone to a couple of other rescues/shelters before that. I have to say, everybody who works in such organizations (predominately volunteers) is very passionate and serious about rescuing animals and finding a good home for them. Sometimes, because of their interest, they may take the screening process a little too far. After communicating/working closer with the counselor at Small Dog Humane, I realized that I should not take their concerns personal and that they really care to make sure that potential owners make the right decision. Our counselor, Kay, was very helpful and kind. We had initially wanted to meet a dog that she thought might not be a good fit for us, and so she made some other suggestions. When we went to the adoption event to meet them, Bailey, the dog we were initially interested in was outside the door with his foster mom. She let us know that the concerns our counselor had related were probably temporary or incidental, so we thought we could give it another shot. Kay agreed that since Bailey had fared in his foster home pretty similar to what we would expect, and since we liked him so much we could adopt him. Both Kay and Linda, the volunteer foster mom were very knowledgeable about dog behavior and about this particular dog's personality. We could not thank them enough for all their tips and support. All other volunteers working with this organization were friendly, knowledgeable, and genuinely happy to assist us. They knew all the dogs very well, seemed to love them, and were very happy that Bailey got a new home. Bailey has been with us for a couple of days now and is the most adorable boy ever! We love him and we are very happy to have him in the family. I wholeheartedly recommend small dog humane (http://furkids.org/) if you are thinking of adopting a pet. And if you haven't thought about that, I strongly recommend that you seriously do. And if you are not a dog/cat person, or you feel that you cannot provide a pet with the love and care she/he needs, please at least donate to this organization, or volunteer at it. My experience with adopting through Furkids was awesome! They were very thorough, meaning they actually care about the pets that go through their program-- this can't be said for all shelters in Atlanta. If anyone is curious, the first thing we did was submit an application online. It was very detailed, from vet information to description of current pets, responses to certain what-if scenarios, a personal reference, and more. I was dead set on a certain dog, so I went ahead and e-mailed them 24 hours after submitting the online application and gave them a call. They called back the day after that and we set up a meet and greet with the potential dog, and our current dog. Once we arrived, we met up with the new dog and everything went great-- but, they needed to see if the new dog would get along alright with our 3 cats, so they asked if they could see our property and bring the new dog. No problem! We zoomed on over, it was a good fit, and headed back to the pet store where the adoptions were being shown off. We did the paperwork in the break room of the pet store and it was a breeze-- the adoption partner went over important information, skimmed what we already knew, and made it an overall fun experience. I have nothing but good things to say about my adoption experience with FurKids Doraville Cat Shelter. The staff and volunteers are very accommodating and it is clear that they want what is best for both the cat and the adopters. The shelter is well organized and very clean and sanitary. There are plenty of beds, food and water bowls, litter boxes, and climbing trees to accommodate the great number of cats who are being loved and cared for in this shelter. It's too bad that others had issues with being denied during the adoption process. I remember when I was younger, my family and I were denied when we tried to adopt a cat, for seemingly no reason (different state and shelter). However, I adopted a cat from Furkids less than a year ago and had no trouble at all. I'm sure it depends a lot on the individual you end up speaking to from the get go. Interrogation by the Cat Nazi This woman came out from the back. Did not introduce herself. Started asking me and my two kids questions about our pet experience, fine...I get it...It is good to be concerned about who the pets are going home to. But to treat me like I was lying, continue to question my answers, until finally I had to explain that I would prefer not to discuss the details of why my pets moved while not in front of the kids. She was rude, combative, and uninterested in helping us. Oh, then the declawing question came up. I checked maybe on the application...why, because I have never owned a cat. I do not know what it means to do this to a cat. Now I know it is more than getting your nails clipped. Ok...Once you explain this, that changes things...She then says, 'so if the cat is destructive, what will you do?'...Well, I would explore options, what do you typically do?...Again, I have never had a cat!...'well I can't guarantee you the cat will not be destructive', so if it is, what will you do? We prefer you would bring them back here... I'm not going to bring back my little boy's cat because it scratched my sofa...and now that I know what declawing is, that sounds aweful... Look...If she was trying to 'teach me a lesson' or make a point that we have not totally thought this out, she is likely right. But, we are going to get two kittens and if your motive is to insure the people that are adopting them will treat them humanely, how about some resources? Maybe a recommendation of a website? Enlighten my Cat Nazi! Then she says, 'well the kittens are not here until Saturday anyway. You would need to come back then if you want to.' This was enough...clearly, she has some reason to believe we are not worthy of giving her cats a good home. I will move on to another organization to find our newest additions. read more

My only child is 2 years old and thought she could use a furry friend. I myself enjoy cats and have been growing up with many up until I moved out of my previous home. After doing my research, I came across Furkids this past April and decided to give them a visit. During my browse with my daughter, we wrote down about 5-6 cats we had in mind (the sixth was a, "bonded pair.") As we went down the list, every single cat either had an issue or they believed wouldn't get along with younger children. I thought, "Okay, they're just looking out for us and making sure the one we chose would be suitable for our family. But, why weren't we told during our time of interacting with each and everyone?" The volunteers and Ms. Susan began telling my family about the other cats they house at a different location. Almost like we were being pushed to adopt. I ended that because we obviously wouldn't know whether we'd get along with them not being able to interact with one prior to adopting. The last cat we came across we were denied to take home unless we took her "brother." So we played a bit more with Chloe only to see her brother was all the way across the room not paying any mind to anyone. We loved Chloe so much we thought maybe two wouldn't be so bad. The paperwork/process took forever. It didn't feel right... We then happily load them in the car, take them to Petsmart right away to supply them with everything they need to feel right at home with us. Arriving home, the two roam around to get a feel and Chloe's bonded cat Freckles keeps to himself. During the three months we've had them we grew very fond of Chloe but was never able to connect with Freckles. Freckles did not get along with my daughter and Furkids denied taking him back unless I brought Chloe in as well. I know they're a "pair" but assumed she would be one less cat stuck in a shelter. I accepted the deny and continued to care for them. Now that I believe the two do not get along and it is effecting my family, Furkids ignores my every form of contact. I highly believe I was forced to adopt a cat of their choosing. read more

We recently adopted our cat from Furkids and I cannot recommend them highly enough! We visited the shelter, filled out an application and interacted with the resident kitties for a long time. The volunteers were very helpful in showing us pets that could be a good fit for our family and were extremely patient with us. It was a tough decision! There were so many sweet, well socialized kitties of all ages and temperaments. I used to volunteer here when I was younger and when it came time to adopt my own cat I thought I would come here and see if they had a cat that would be the right fit. Although they made sure to give us instructions and hand sanitizer and other things to ensure the safety of the cats, they gave us pretty much free reign to walk from room to room meeting the cats. It was pretty over crowded from the hurricanes so the cats were a little more aggressive towards each other via hissing but we were still able to find the absolute perfect cat. He is amazing! I think part of that is how he's been taken care of at furkids because he is perfectly healthy, has been appropriately socialized, and the adoption counselors and workers knew him and his temperament and were able to make sure we were the right match. This organization made me feel incompetent and unworthy of having one of their cats. I understand that they may need to be strict so as to prevent their cats from being adopted by the wrong individuals, but they are also deterring good owners from owning one of thier cats. read more

I got my sweet cockerspanial from fur kids. It is basically a high class humane society. Before you get your pet they make sure you bring any animals you may have into play with your new pet just to make sure they get along. Amanda stayed there after hours to make sure I got to bring my cocker home THAT day. I had an easy and great experience. My pet was $275 and I bought a crate there. When I got my dog he had already been to the vet and had blood work done and was perfectly healthy. read more

Just made our third adoption from Furkids - one cat and two dogs. The process couldn't have been better. We had hoped to adopt one particular dog, but we have a cat, and had to adopt a dog that wouldn't harass our cat. The Furkids staff checked our chosen dog and let us know that he wouldn't be a good companion to our cat. So we had to make another choice. Chris, the foster caregiver of the dog we ended up adopting, was terrific, and provided lots of helpful information. FurKids job is so very important! It is also very hard! The things they see with their animals would and does make me very angry! Yet, most of the time they are kind and professional. They are always kind with the animals. This is my third adoption with FurKids. My first was 20 years ago when they were still Small Dog Rescue. I adopted a sweet schnauzer mix, they had only had for a few days. She was 3. She was 19 when she passed, and was the BEST dog I have ever had! When the time came to get another dog for my family we turned to FurKids. We don't live close anymore, so we drove over an hour to get to the shelter in Alpharettta to look a the dogs we had picked. Our first choice wasn't available We met our second choice, a big, goofy boy of 70lbs. He had been in a terrible situation before and had no "home" experience at all. But he was kind, and a sort of skittish, gentle giant. He took to me right away. My son (5), he liked okay. My husband, not at all. He just hid from him. He would duck and cover from just about any noise. Quick movements were scary for him. But he was trying. He began to growl about a week in to his stay. We kept working with him, and Mary, my FurKids contact, and my son (when he growls, back away---doesn't matter what you are doing). Things were fine for several weeks and then a random Tuesday my son leaned down and the dog bit him. It was scary, but not terrible. I made a quick call to Mary with FurKids and they advised we return the dog immediately! We did, and it was a little awkward at the return. To be honest, I felt like we were being ignored and almost blamed for my son being bitten. While we were there, we did, by chance meet a foster leaving with one of her foster dogs. She didn't know why we were there, but the dog was playing with my son, so she stopped. I told her he was a little shy because of the bite, etc. We talked and my son played with the dog. Everyone left. My son could not stop talking about that dog. Another quick call to my FurKids contact Mary.....and on Saturday we picked up Max.....the perfect dog!! Furkids was a great organization, or so I thought. I adopted a cat whose foster mom was one of the volunteers in charge of one of the adoption centers at Petco. She wanted to keep the cat but due to someone with allergies, she brought the cat to the shelter. I adopted the cat and she was the best cat I ever had. I had her for a year and a half when the cat sneaked out when my daughter opened the door. Furkids did try to help me catch her but the attempt was botched. The foster mom decided to "help" us catch her. However, she would not let me nor my neighbor (a feral expert) help. She assured us she was on my side but her actions indicated otherwise. She ended up catching and keeping my cat without telling me. When I sent emails, they were ignored. I had to go to the shelter and confront the staff who never admitted they had the cat but instead told me I could no longer adopt from them because I breached the contract. This was one month after they got the cat. I emailed the top person and she said she agreed with the decision. I emailed her back indicating that I thought they failed to inform me of the decision in a timely manner and I wanted a response. I did not get one. I can no longer recommend this organization because of the unethical way I was treated. If you check Kudzu, you will notice that some other people had problems with this organization and the latest two positive reviews happened to be written the same day I told them about the negative reviews. This animal shelter's professionalism is terrible. My daughter and I rescued a dog a few weeks ago and contacted FurKids to see about placing her with their shelter in order to get her to a good home. I was contacted by a Lance White in their office after a week who informed me that they could take her, but not for another 10 days, which at the time, was no problem. That was when the issues began. From that point on, there was no effort made by Mr. White to reach me to confirm our original meeting date, or to inform me of any changes. I contacted him 6 days prior to our scheduled meeting date to confirm, to which I received no response, until the day before, when he informed that he was out of town and unable to meet with me. After that, I was never able to speak with Mr. White over the phone, only via text message. I contacted him on Thursday,10 December to make arrangements to meet with Mr. White and transfer the dog to him, to which he changes course and informs me that he wants to "meet" with the dog and not take her. Even with the change, I ask when we will meet, to which he responds between 12:30 and 1 PM. I forget that I have set the time, but not the place. I call and ask for him to call me in order to set the place, but receive no response. I text him this morning, 13 December, to set the place and received a response that he wanted me to meet him in Alpharetta and not Norcross, which is who I sent the email to. I contacted him to at least try to set a mid-point for us to meet, as this was last minute and did not expect to have to have to drive that far. He then tried to act like he was doing me a favor by inferring that I was trying to give up a dog that I owned, not one that we rescued. After talking with my family, it was decided that after all of this, we really couldn't trust him with the dog's well-being and rather than worry, we will work to place her with someone that can be a little more professional. I cannot in good conscience recommend that anyone that wants to do right by a dog to do business with this shelter. read more
