Our family cannot thank the incredible team at Furkids enough for bringing our beloved Sadie back to us. Sadie, our 16-year-old cat, went missing in December, and after days of searching with no success, we were heartbroken and mourned our sweet girl. By some miracle, Furkids took in an older calico cat found in rough shape on the streets. They nursed her back to health, giving her the care and love she needed. While scrolling through their adoptable pets, I came across a cat named Evelyn Hugo, whose markings were an exact match to Sadie's. The Furkids team couldn't have been more compassionate and helpful--they immediately responded to my inquiry, and the brilliant director of cat services personally confirmed that Evelyn Hugo was, in fact, our Sadie. Within two hours, our family was on the way for an emotional reunion. Thanks to Furkids, we have more time with our beloved Sadie, who is now home where she belongs. We will be forever grateful for their kindness, dedication, and the lifesaving work they do. Thank you, Furkids, for giving us this miracle!

We adopted Sully (formerly called Pez) from them on November 10th and had an amazing experience. I applied in October before Sully was even available and heard back from them when it was time to meet him. I have a boxer with extreme anxiety when at vets or shelters and she barked nonstop while visiting Sully and they were so patient. They may have been annoyed (I was beyond exhausted with her barking) but they didn't show it. Sully has been an incredible addition and the whole process was extremely smooth. I would not hesitate to recommend them. I've seen complaints about it taking long to hear from them but people can always call and follow up. It helps to remember they are all volunteers caring for a high volume of adoptable pets and sick/ injured pets.

And so my adventures in Atlanta continue. I chanced upon a stray kitten last night on the highway. She was so tiny and eager for human touch that I couldn't just leave her there. And so she came home with me for the night. The next morning, we took her to Gwinnett County Animal Shelter. She weighs only 13 oz and was turned away because they don't have the means to take care of a kitten so young. If they were to take her in and can't find person/group to take her in, she would be euthanized. Instead, they recommended FurKids. We took the half hour drive to the FurKids in Doraville (we didn't realize at the time that there's a different shelter for dogs so we got lucky), and were told that there weren't any available fosters at the moment and she's too young to be left there as she needs constant care. Somehow overnight we officially became foster furparents. FurKids helped ease us into this process with as many resources as they had. They gave her a deworming and flea medication, and set us off with food (wet and dry), litter materials, and even a playtent. We've also scheduled for her shots once she's old enough to take them. I've never had a cat and didn't know I'd be fostering one, but it's been a rewarding experience thus far. Our little foster kitten is extremely social and loves being cuddled and touched. She's smaller than usual so we look forward to watching her grow in the upcoming weeks.

I've had a great experience here last year. I adopted a kitty (originally Ellen, renamed Sage). They asked me what type of cat I was looking for (age, temperament, color, etc) and set up a play area for me to meet a few. After I found "the one," the process was quite simple...paperwork and health documents for her. I think it was around $100 to adopt, I can't quite remember. When I took her home, a few days later, I noticed she was feeling very lethargic and not very playful. Plus she kept fussing with her ears. I called them back and they said she ma have ear mites, but to bring her in and they will check her out for free of charge. The only hassle was getting all the way to Doraville. Long story short, they gave her another physical, gave me dosages of her medicine for a month, also got flea meds, and they clipped her nails. And this was free of charge. They went above and beyond when they noticed the issue. And Sage quickly became my best friend and the most affectionate and "human-like" cat I've ever had! I can't wait to go back to get her a friend!

Furkids is a very important organization and makes a huge positive impact on the community. We recently adopted a beautiful cat who we absolutely love. I appreciated the thorough application process, and we were able to take home our baby the same day we met her at the shelter. I was impressed by the condition of the shelter. Obviously there are tons of animals living in a space, so it smelled just like any other shelter. But the cats have a pretty good quality of life compared to other shelters. When we got her home, It became clear that our cat was sick. At first we thought it was just that she was stressed about the new environment and adapting to her new food. It is a little frustrating that within a month of adopting, we were not able to reach anyone even though we left multiple voice mails. After no call back from Furkids, we had a vet come to the house and do an exam, take blood, urine and stool samples, and examine her mouth. Turns out she had swollen gums, sores and pus, tartar, etc. No wonder her breath was so stinky! It's going to cost us around $800 for the exams and dental work next week. Totally worth it, and we are fortunate enough to afford it. We love our new babycat, so it's not really about the money. I only tell this story because when you are looking to adopt, you have to understand the financial demands that come with it. She was "free" (no adoption fee) because she was a senior cat. That comes with senior problems. Although we knew this going in (we have a cat already), I was still surprised because Furkids have vets that are supposed to care for these animals. I understand they're a nonprofit and probably overwhelmed with animals to take care of. Still, this kind of sucked. Also, I was told that if she was sick within a certain time period, we could take her back to the Furkids vets. That never happened because they were unreachable. Again, this is obviously a symptom of being stretched thin. We appreciate everything they do with limited resources. All volunteers, staff and the adoption manager we worked with are great. I highly recommend Furkids as a place to adopt from and to support financially.

"The largest no-kill shelter in Georgia." Paw-some! But seriously. Wonderful cause, of course. Did you know they currently have about 225 cats looking for fosters or fur-ever homes? Furkids is special because they let their cats walk around, cohabitate and cuddle with each other in small rooms rather than cages.. what a nice ability - less anxiety inducing I'm sure. They do have a few cages that are used for newbies and those who prefer no roomies :) Some of them are large popcorn carts which is like a luxury suite for a kitty. We volunteered to "socialize" with the cats for two hours. Which means, we pet 'em and talked to 'em and cuddled and played. They even let children volunteer with adult supervision (teaching responsibility or how to care for a pet? Start here with no committment!) It is good for the cats and is good for people, too! It's relaxing and even sort of therapeutic. Petting, purr purr purr, soft kitty, all that jazz. I even made a few friends, I think! I have not adopted from here as I already have 2 rescued cats at home (and 2 rescued dogs) but I am looking forward to returning for more volunteer opportunities in the future. They offer Thurs and Sat, 2-4pm. There's also the Small Dog rescue which they acquired in 2009, I believe. Bring a friend, plan a Buford Highway lunch, and have a warm-fuzzy kinda day!

First off, I am definitely a dog person through and through, but volunteering at furkids was about 98% close to converting me into a cat person. Now as this was my first time visiting a cat shelter, I had no idea what to expect... well besides cats. And boy were there a lot of cats... So when you walk in the door the aroma of cats is going to wake you up at 10am, but the longer you're there working the smell dwindles bit by bit. Now I think there were 10-12 people in the group that signed up to volunteer so we were split up into teams to do different jobs. I was helping to clean windows and just be warned if you volunteer and are assigned to clean windows... there are A LOT of windows to clean. But when cleaning the windows inside the rooms you come into contact with LOTS of kitties. When I walked into the largest room in the front, I found myself swarmed by 6-7 cats...almost felt like something from a Stephen King novel... but I jest. It was cool walking around and seeing all the cats, I swear it took me so long to clean the windows because I would stop and talk to the cats and of course pet them (I mean humans are here to serve the cats right). I even chatted with some of the regular volunteers and even told them that Yelp is for more than restaurants but you can search for places like furkids on there as well... But let me wrap this up before I go on and on about how cute those black kittens were. But I really enjoyed volunteering here. Everyone was nice and helpful and only one kitty swiped at me as I was trying to push his cat tree back by the window (good advice use your foot to avoid swiping kitties). Now I still may be a dog person but being around all those kitties made my heart grow three sizes that day.

My husband and I recently adopted two 6 month old cats from Furkids. We had a wonderful experience with this shelter and all of the employees. Furkids is a no kill shelter, and they keep most of the cats in communal rooms so that they can interact and play with each other. I'm sure it helps the cats lead much happier lives and become accustomed to a new home more quickly. During the adoption process, Nicole was very helpful and patient with us. The rest of the staff were so friendly and took time to describe certain cats and point out ones they thought we would like. They have also been very responsive and communicative with us since we brought our kitties home. One thing I will point out - they do a lot of offsite adoption events on the weekends, so the specific cat you saw online might not be there on a Saturday. Thanks Furkids!

This place used to be good but they no longer sell the good stuff in their stores. The good stuff: - Hard back fiction novels for adults. The hardback fictions that remain are usually children's books which aren't popular that they've labeled as adult books so they can price them $1 high. ($2.92) - I've seen large non-fiction books (coffee table books) priced as high as $6 - music instruments, they don't even sell the starter instruments your toddlers and preschoolers might use - books of sheet music - any vintage item that is in good repair - art supplies (I mean I found some broken crayons) - any designer clothing or bags (even the cheaper things like Gloria Vanderbilt jeans we can get at Costco for $20) - all leather jackets - all trench coats - vintage jewelry - enamel pins or little buttons - toys are mostly gone except some stuffies, especially any which might appeal to Gen X or older millennials as a nostalgia item They send all of this "good stuff" which they get for free and send it to a e-commerce sites where virtually everything starts priced at $9-50. Then they charge $2-7 for handling plus $5-15 for shipping for almost every item. This means for any new item, almost anything will cost you less to order from Amazon. They also tend to overprice things that are new and look ornate. For example, they are currently trying to sell a fountain pen that costs you $23 from Amazon for $59.99. I've emailed them several times since first seeing the item listed to inform them that it looks ornate but it is actually from a cheap pen company. Goodwill packaging which I assume is supposed to be covered by "handling" fee is BAD. I ordered a few things to test them out: - One arrived at my place okay. But it took over a week to leave their facility. When I emailed asking about the delay, they said that the items are only guaranteed to leave after 5 business days and Saturday and Sunday are not business days even though they are open on Saturday but closed on Friday. I ordered the item on Saturday, which meant it took they kept the item for 10 days to ship. - One lot of pens, for which I paid $25 in shipping and handling... they literally scraped into a plastic grocery bag then put the bag into the bottom of the box. The bag contained a delicate, early 1900s: mother of pearl dip pen with a gold nib which had a box that they declined to use, a glass fountain pen (also not in its box) and a bunch of nibs... plus 3 bonus razor blades all shipped 2000 miles to me with all the padding ABOVE the items. - Another they described as an inkwell (I am an artist)... it wasn't. It was 12 inches tall and a wine bottle. They provided no photos to give reference to size. - Another was a t-shirt press and it came wrapped in two boxes with no padding. The two boxes were held together by a piece of tape that may have been 2 inches long. If an item doesn't sell through their website on the first few rounds.... Like all those starter music instruments you might have bought for your kid for $5-10 and used artist loft kits that they were trying to start at $25 (when you shipping and handling fee ). They auction them off in giant boxes for hundreds to thousands of dollars. If you can avoid it don't shop at their stores, take the time to find another thrift store. But above all don't donate your items. They are taking the goods you are donating to help others in your community and selling them to people who have money to get into bidding wars. Meanwhile they are paying their CEO's up to $750,000 a year while paying their disabled employees as little as $0.75 and hour. No I didn't leave out a number. Seventy-five cents an hour. I recommend SVDP, Value Village, Humane Society Thrift Stores, Scraplants, and Habitat Humanity Re-Store. All of these are great places to donate and great places to shop. References regarding pay and Goodwill, I've seen no evidence that they've improved their ethics: https://www.nbcnews.com/news/world/disabled-workers-paid-just-pennies-hour-its-legal-flna6C10406957

Everything that my trip to Haiti was not, my trip to Africa was & I am so happy I decided to give 410 Bridge a 2nd chance! --- I certainly want to share all about the wondrous things I saw, people I met, and all the details from the PAGES of journal notes that I took every day. I want you to know how friendly the people of the nation of Kenya are & how the children are so dang adorable everywhere you go! I want to describe how every child I passed (particularly in more rural country regions) had a smile that would melt your heart & were eager to greet you with genuine warmth! They didn't just wave EVERY TIME, but (if you waved back) they would ask 'how are you' with an awesome little British accent to their twang. I was blown away with their manners. Some of these children wearing mismatched clothes without shoes on their feet would shake your hand, sometimes performing a curtsy. BLEW ME AWAY! In my journal I wrote: "I have experienced many hours of driving through this nation; From the airport and our first/last nights stay in Nairobi, to our main accommodations in Nanyuki (4 hours away), to our 1 hour drive one way to the Maasai tribal village of Segera each morning. Through my window I saw the way mankind was meant to interact with one another. It was like living in the most awesome subdivision ever. The joy on the faces of locals as they walked and talked with each other made it almost appeared that everyone was good friends. Not once have I seen a argument, a heated conversation, a child disrespecting their parent or a parent beating their child. What I have seen, is people who care about each other." I want to share with you all the wonderful stories I experienced through bible camp each day not only with the children, but courageous stories of adults too. Like Dorcas, a 19 year old female who was almost sold as a wife 3 times @ ages 10, 12 & 14. But in each case someone stood up for her and challenged the sale. In the Maasai culture, you bring shame to your family by fighting a sale and often become outcast by the community and your own family. Add to the story the man whom risked his life challenging the father and took Dorcas in as a daughter even though he was not financially ready. Or the story of the 12 year old boy I met who's parents were killed a year ago and he currently is living in a tiny hut shared by his 14 & 17 year old brother who care for him. Or the story of Jenny, a 19 year old girl with three children whom was sold into marriage @ age 12 and the overwhelming load of responsibilities that a Maasai women must burden; Such as walking several miles one way to retrieve water in 20 liter containers sometimes more than once a day. Being responsible for the children, the home and in many cases even building the home and doing all needed repairs. --- Yes, I want so badly to go into great detail of all that I saw, and maybe I will write an update to detail the stories I encountered. Each one alone would take up the 5,001 characters allowed by yelp in a single review. But what I want I truly want to do is congratulate and promote the work being done by 410 Bridge in this area of Kenya!!! The Maasai culture is a ancient one, in which old tradition is set and there is no movement. Many of these traditions go against basic modern human rights and the people are not receptive to "new things." At one point the Kenyan government had to force leaders of the tribe to send children to school to be educated. However, only elementary school is free in Kenya. To attend high school you must pay. 410 bridge has stepped in the gap of cultural tradition and is making a way for students to fulfill their education. Great progress is being made to get girls into school and improve their test scores. Young girls were missing an average of 1 month of school per year because they simply didn't have sanitary napkins when their monthly cycle arrived, until 410 Bridge began providing them. For others it was the lure of free food that keeps children coming to school. Still for others it was dormitories build on campus to keep many from walking over 10 miles to get educated. Then there is the matter of clean drinking water for the community. Water wells have been erected and tanks that store treated river water have been brought into the communities allowing for better hygiene, shorter walks and even irrigation for farming... a hugely necessary requirement to maintain self-sustaining agriculture. 410 also provides business education to promote entrepreneurship. Something as simple as gathering goat dung for sale as fertilizer has provided a basic income for many! 410 Bridge, this isn't just an upgraded review, it is an apology for not truly understanding all that you do and how truly amazing you are! 2016/135

This org has changed drastically from the original concepts and methodology. At one time, CA was a reputable and wonderful organization. Many dogs were appropriately trained with fosters for their early puppy years and then trained/taught tasks associated with the needs of future recipients with different disabilities, e.g. diabetes alert dogs, epileptic alert dogs, wheelchair bound children and adults, and therapy dogs. CA has morphed into an ideology that recipients should [bond, love, and give the dog choices] without asking or commanding or giving cues to do 'anything!'. CA thinks giving commands is abusing the dog. My daughter received a dog very recently; she has a neuromuscular disease and is wheelchair bound. The "match" process of recipient to dog is a just a toss up. The dog was brought home without any training or teaching of tasks my daughter needs even though CA knew the tasks a service dog would need to know to be able to help her through a day beyond the love and bond. The dog was clueless what sit even meant. This "retriever" didn't retrieve ANYTHING. This is the main task needed for someone that drops things all the time. The dog was a nervous wreck just hearing the garage door open, a lawn mower start, a car door close, a leaf blower, the vacuum, and the necessary lift we have to bring her up the steps! And van lift! This dog should have been desensitized to noise trained! This place is misrepresenting itself to applicants, recipients, sponsors, the public and media. Go ahead, ask a dog to sit, lay down, fetch. They are saying just "bond and love" the dog and it will do what you want. BS all the love and bonding in the world will not teach a dog how to sit, turn on lights, close doors, retrieve and bring back. Plus they are giving older dogs that are older! I am one pissed mother for all the hurt and pain they have caused my daughter and our family trying to give this dog and others to recipients, (even if there is no cost to them) that cannot remotely meet the standards of a TRUE SERVICE DOG. The dog was taken abruptly and is back at CA probably will be re-homed. IT IS NOT the dog's fault. Investigations are fruitless and everyone there circle around in secrecy of what is happening labeling recipients that return dogs as ungrateful. There is no accountability or admission and because of many success stories in the past, and the love recipients develop for any dog they receive, people are not willing to talk. Volunteers and employees think they are doing good and most of them are kept from the truth as well. The ones that know leave. I have tried to write a review on google reviews on CA only to find it does not appear. I can see it, but no one else can. I wonder why.
