I can't even step foot into this store without getting nauseated. The smell of this place is awful. I couldn't imagine buying anything for fear that it would smell like that. It's like mildew or sewage so bad. I can smell it when getting off the escalator! THE SMELL. theres no way people work there and not get sick. there needs to be a complaint to the health department. there's no such thing as customer service. you have to hunt down people for help. they don't even wear name tags so it's hard to decipher who works there. the value of the items are outrageous. I understand the company needs to make money but you can find the same products for waaay cheaper somewhere else. the plush selection is CRAZY. they're always on the floor. there's a young lady who is really cool to chat with but there's an employee I always see who is sitting on the counter and telling people what to do. it's embarrassing to say the least as we wait in line and instead of ringing us up, he shouts for someone to come ring...... don't get their membership either. they state they don't charge and it's free but it's a LIE! read more

Holy crap (literal?) I downloaded Yelp again just to make this review. It smells like ABSOLUTE SEWAGE in this store. I wanted to look for gifts on Black Friday but I couldn't even last 2 minutes in there. (And I was even wearing 2 layered KN95 Masks!) I can't even IMAGINE how bad it would have smelled without my masks on???? Two men next to me walking in at the same time both visually sniffed in disgust as well. Located on the lower floor next to Sears and video arcade, this fye has a lot of stuff. I went there specifically for Funko Pops! as they're having a Buy 2, get the 3rd one at 75% off. There's only a handful of stores located in southern California, and this is only 1 of 2 in the San Diego county area. They have a variety of stuff from DVD's to CD's to tshirts to pop culture items. While they say its on sale, look carefully. Not everything is on the sale list, even though the sale sign it literally next to the item. A bit pricier than the competitor, but if you need it, buy it. read more

The store smell is GROSS. Also why do you guys have to put security tags ON EVERYTHING! like ok I get it that people shoplift but you don't need to put it on every item. For example I bought manga there once and after purchasing it I went to go sit on a bench to go read it and as I was opening it there was a god damn security tag ON THE INSIDE/ ON THE PAPER. And as I was taking it off gently the good damn paper rips off because the security tag was so damn sticky. Like you guys could of put it on the the outside of the book. Okay, I'm just going to say it: this store's buying prices for Blu-ray movies are ludicrously low. Recently, I sold six Blu-rays for store credit; because I was selling for store credit, I expected (or hoped for?), say, $1-2 per disc. Also, keep in mind that the six discs I sold were not movies of which they had an overabundance. Anyway, I reasoned that f.y.e. would be able to recoup the buyback price by marking each disc up 400% and still make a profit. However, I barely got $2 of credit from the transaction... Two dollars! Desperate to offload the Blu-rays without donating them (though I could have donated those discs to Savers and gotten a 20% discount on my next purchase), I went ahead with the $2 credit and bought two very good movies: Argo (only for $4!) and Tree of Life (an outstanding Terrence Malick movie) for $10 minus the $2 credit. Anyway, I would say that f.y.e in Carlsbad has a decent selection of used Blu-rays (though their new Blu-rays are unreasonably highly-priced), but their buyback rates are horrendous. The staff is friendly enough, and I don't blame them for their buyback policies, but, sheesh, f.y.e... You can do better than $0.35 per Blu-ray! read more

I miss music store like this because this is what I grew up on. There was only one female employee who was very friendly but also busy which is good. I hate to see employees on their damn cellphone when they should be helping me. She was actually working so that's a plus in my book. I browsed around then went to the rap section to see what they had. I was surprised to see that they had some pretty good deals. They also had a pretty big rap section which is kind of unusual. There is also a wall of some pretty cool shirts that were buy one get one half off. I never really heard of this music store but for what it was it wasn't that bad. I only saw about six people in there if this was in the early 2000's this place would've been jammed packed. I'm giving them a 3.5 stars. read more

I'm bummed, I loved fye growing up and was looking forward to going here but the smell when you walk in is overwhelmingly horrible. The first time I went in it was unbearable and couldn't be in the store long enough to look around. I went a second time hoping it was a one off thing but the smell was still just as nauseating. Wonderful place for nostalgia. If you enjoy memorabilia for various pop culture brands, you will find something here. They sell everything from baseball caps to T-shirts to patches for all your favorite bands, wrestlers, and celebrities. I was impressed with the selection of brand-new vinyl records. Records were nearly obsolete when I was in grade school! Walking around this shop made me feel like I'd gone back in time. Its really hard to find music stores since a lot of it is downloaded or pirated, but this one has always been reliable and has never left this mall. I am so lucky and thankful to have this business still swinging and making a stand to never move and make buying music/movies still a fun thing to do!! They have tons and TONS of movies and music on sale everyday, and the cool thing is most of them are dirt cheap! I got lucky so many times and found movies for $3 or on special where you buy 1 get one FREE :) The staff are very knowledgeable and do a great job at guiding you to find what you need, or even if you dont know the title of a movie, they really know there stuff and can identify what movie you may be looking for based on your vague description lol Overall, it doesnt get better than this! I cleaned out a storage unit and had over 200 DVD's to get rid of. I called FYE and they said they would pay me between 25 cents to a few dollars for used DVD's and $4- 8 for brand new one that were not opened. I dropped all of them off and followed up with a call, yes I had to call them because they did not call me after they said they would. As an '80s child, this store reminds me of the corner music shops we had back home. Of course back then most places still carried vinyl LPs and cassettes were the staple media for all things music - can you say mixed tap?. CDs you ask? They were the newest thing on the market, but mostly just skipped a lot. I think dinosaurs may have still roamed the earth back then... As to f.y.e, I really like this store. They carry a wide range of music and I can always find movies that no one else has even heard of let alone would carry. As a regular customer over the course of many years, dropping by the store at least once a month, I think that their best feature are the staff. They have always been helpful and knowledgeable about their products and they have always been great about any returns that I wanted to make. This store and the comic book store are the only reasons I even bother going to the mall. read more

I like to listen to music quite loud, but for a business to play music so loud that I cannot even talk to the person right beside me is absolutely ridiculous. Not only do I get a headache from the loud music, but the employees are rude and ignorant. You can never get any help from anyone even if asked. A great store for Movies, CD's, Television Shows, all on DVD or CD. For those of us who still like to buy things we can hold and see, this is one of the last of a dying breed. This store, although smaller than a Best Buy or Fry's, has the most comprehensive collection of movies that Ive ever seen. They're also up to date to the day on all new releases. Additionally, they have full seasons of an incredible selection of Television shows, both new and old. They have a majority of brand new everything but also carry used or pre-owned DVD's etc. I purchased a copy of The Godfather 2 used for $3.99. There was nothing to indicate it had been used and sold back at all. Even the case was brand new looking. $3.99 compared to $24.99 anywhere else makes it so you can get more for your buck! And, this isnt where you go to buy ipod speakers. You go to virtually anywhere else on earth to purchase those. They have a selection of speakers and headphones but nothing vast and that's probably by design. If you're looking for speakers go to Walmart. Additionally, when Im looking at DVD's and CD's honestly the last thing I want at ALL is ANY customer service. In fact, thats a key selling point of this place for me- They dont bug me! If I need help or want to know if they have something specific that I can't find I just walk the 12 steps to the front and ask the employee working there. I wouldn't even go to this place if they had customer service, the only customer service I want when shopping for CD's or random movies is to have them charge me on my way out. If I need anything, I ask, and they are very helpful. I dont want to feel like Im buying a used car and I want to browse on my own. Im a big boy. They have an EXCELLENT selection of movies, used and new. They also have great sales like "any used, buy one get one half off". The movies are well priced, and the CD selection is great. They have used and new for mostly any item you can imagine. Aside from the terrible music they play, I usually have a pleasant shopping experience at FYE. The staff is better than the one at Spin and Lous and McDonalds is right across the mall so I can unwrap my CD's, redeem my digital copies and eat McDoubles after spending far too much money. read more

The store is alright for a "going out of business store" all the albums you want are normal priced but are probably out of stock. Alot of the bands that are very famous are overfilling in albums but only bands from before any of the employees were even born. All albums are out of place, and are out of stock. There is only like 7 vinyls in the whole store and they are the collectors and way too expensive. The manager told me to go online to buy an out of stock album instead of them actually ordering more to put in stock. but stared me down, and seemed kinda rude which was weird. If you're into alternative bands that aren't very famous don't visit. If you only have ten bucks good luck on buying two things. the only reason i'm giving two stars is to say it could have been worse.
