I was initially intimidated to speak with a partner at a prestigious law firm, especially given her amazing and high-profile accomplishments and since this was a small situation, but I needn't have been. Amanda took me seriously, easily analyzed complex matters, outlined a clear course of action, and made me feel supported at a time when I needed help. Despite her obvious pedigree, she was super easy to work with and I never once felt like a small or unimportant case. TL;DR: Marizen is NOT a lawyer. She is a Legal Document Assistant that cannot provide you with legal advice. She is a significantly affordable option for a Living Trust but she is unprofessional and has poor attention to detail-- key characteristics that are paramount to detailing an important document. Details: I left a Living Trust inquiry via her site and Marizen emailed me back within 1 day to "text" her back for a scheduled over-the-phone consult. Upon speaking with Marizen it was clear she did not take the time to review the few questions I had sent her in my initial inquiry as she was confused as to what the consult would primarily be regarding. Her rates were significantly less than what other competing services were offering which raised an orange flag for me. Upon further research, I realized Marizen was NOT a lawyer, but rather a "Legal Document Assistant (LDA)." According to the CA Attorney General, LDAs cannot give legal advice. This was my first encounter with an LDA, which allowed me the opportunity to do the necessary research to make a more educated investment. Had Marizen gotten back to me with the necessary next steps and questionnaire as she had promised (it's been over 1.5 weeks), I may have considered her as a possible option to complete my Living Trust needs. But if you are looking for a more affordable option, perhaps Marizen is a good fit for you.

The possible financial consequences to me were significant. Janet Fogarty was referred to me by a local financial adviser, and I have to say, she was an answered prayer. In late October of 2019 I met her for the first time, for an in-office consultation. Her manner was caring, focused, serious and utterly professional. She listened attentively, asked a lot of questions and took copious notes while I explained my situation. She then offered several scenarios whereby this problem could be solved. None of them a guarantee - but in that first visit she allowed me to see this was, in fact, a solvable problem. Unsurprisingly, this did not happen quickly as the wheels of bureaucracy, mired as they are in red tape, never move fast. So it took several months for this to finally be solved. She was very good about maintaining contact and keeping me apprised of the progress, which ended up coming to a near-halt in early March because of the pandemic. Yet, she persevered. In mid-April she called with the wonderful news that the issue had been solved, and to my very great advantage. Her decades-long relationship with the San Mateo County Tax Assessor's Office was a HUGE "plus" in reaching the resolution I needed. She knows the personnel, she knows how to interact with them, and she knows the exact right questions to ask. I could not be happier. If I am ever in need of real estate tax advice again - she will be my first call. I've already recommended her to two friends. My gratitude is beyond words. He was clear about why the trust and powers of attorney could be useful, explained legal terms when we had questions, and was very good about checking with my mother about her intentions and goals and asking her about her wishes in situations she may not have thought about. He was also able to pull in an accountant with tax knowledge when we had questions about how to settle the trust.
