It seems like the entries for jams, jellies and pickles are a smaller group every year. Maybe the farmers are retiring! There are still spectacular quilts hanging from the rafters, and adult and junior photography samples line the walls. 4-H has it's own pavilion now, behind the Domestic Arts one. While the market goats, sheep, rabbits and calves are in other barns, there are dioramas explaining how a successful farmer (of any age!) raises an animal. Like the Erie County Fair, the Cattaraugus County Fair has a booth by the Department of Health where one can get a free, wrapped dose of nasal narcan. (DH and I saved a teenager from an OD last month in Ontario; but that's another story). So yes, we did each want another dose of antidote. Request it, sign for it, watch a one minute explanatory cartoon, and away you go. The DOH booth is under the grandstand seating, next to a concession that sells slices of a dozen different varieties of pies. (Yelpers, you have an assignment!) The vibe is very much a celebration of farm life: Lots of teenagers in cowboy boots and rodeo shirts; little kids in face paint, and grown men with hats of the type of tractor they favor. It's such a small Fair, as a parent you can be confident about letting the teenagers or older children have a "free-range" experience with their friends. It's fenced, so it's well contained, and there's volunteer FFs, EMS, mounted patrol, and sheriff's deputies from all over the county. The gate fee includes the cost of all rides: $17 cash, $18 credit, free if the child is younger than two. Parking near the gate is $5, which goes to support local youth programs; there's free parking about a quarter mile down the sidewalk from the gate.

My niece, nephew, and I smelled like friers and ash trays when we left. I don't get the appeal to staying all day and night. I like the events, but the rest of it sucks. All the food is overpriced and not very good unless it's funnel cake or taffy. The fried dough is just over floured pizza dough with sugar sprinkled on it served cold. I mean campi pizza is literally a flavorless loaf of bread with a tiny sprinkling of cheese that doesn't even cover the sauce and 4 thin slices of pepperoni for $5 a slice *gag*. The demolition derbies, truck pulls, concerts, and monster trucks are cool, but other than that meh. I recommend going at night to see an event getting taffy and funnel cake before it and racing out after.

First off, the property, the building, what we could see of the grounds is beautiful. It's still snow covered and cold, but I bet this place is lovely in the summertime. Through the front entrance into the grand foyer, there are no signs, no host, or any indication of where to go, so we looked in different doorways, found a bathroom, a lounge, a long hallway; eventually a gentleman spotted us wandering and asked if we were here for brunch. When we entered the dining room, the friendly server came by and told us to sit anywhere, pointed out the coffee and juice and food in the next room. She was a doll. There were 2 guys eating in the dining room, and by the time we left, only one more table of ladies came in, not busy at all. It was quite inexpensive for what they offered (2 adults $40) you could add mimosas or something else from the bar, if you wanted a beverage other than juice, water, coffee, or tea. The food was just ok, there were plenty of lunch and breakfast choices, the mac and cheese was good, their take on Italian Wedding soup was good, but it was mostly just ok. Some things were obviously sitting a while, e.g. the Minestrone was the consistency of chili, but hubs tried it and said it was good. Parking, unfortunately, is far from the entrance, and the long walk to the door very icy, unsalted and dangerous. Maybe we try again in better weather, we'll see.

Must say that in a time of a family death, you would expect to be treated to the utmost when you…read moreare purchasing flowers for a loved one's casket. Here is my issue. I ordered the flowers, picked certain colors for the flowers for a reason, had ordered a ribbon with a certain saying and paid for it all with my credit card. I get to the funeral service and what do I see? I see that the whole arrangement had been changed. Apparently, I was told that the biological mother had called the shop, spoke to the same person that I ordered the arrangement from, and she completely changed what the original order was. The owner,who personally knows the biological mom, never reached out to me or the father of the deceased, to verify that such changes should be made. Mom was not paying for that arrangement, WE were. I reached out to the owner of the flower shop the following business day and informed her of the situation that occurred and expressed that she did not have the authorization to change our order just because "mom" wanted something else. Mom should have placed her own order of flowers and not be concerned about our flowers. I asked for a refund because I did not get what I ordered. Wrong flowers, wrong colors, wrong ribbon etc. Why should I have to pay for something that this shop changed without my permission just because they know the other party involved. She did credit half of it and told me she refused to deal with me anymore. I firmly believe that I am entitled to a full refund and she should be charging the other party for those flowers that were paid by us but not our order. Completely disappointed in the service I received at a difficult time that we are already dealing with. What's even more disappointing and appalling is it's the owner of the establishment that did this and there is no one else for me to reach out to to resolve this issue besides maybe the Better Business Bureau. We stayed in a suite with a sitting room. Both rooms had large TVs and comfortable furnishings. There were soft colors and beautiful wallpaper. I set up a photo shoot long distance to capture my 10 month old daughters meeting their…read moregreat-grandmother. Jenn was responsive, warm, considerate, and appeared excited to share in the moment. Unfortunately my twins got pretty sick right before the photo shoot and we had to cancel last minute. Jenn was compassionate and understanding about the cancellation and was more than generous with our prior payment. (I'm sure our random Monday in December appointment also helped.) I'm disappointed that we could not give her our business, but if I ever need a photographer in the area again, I will be sure to book her.

Or, if it was the groom's cousin's girlfriend's sister who agreed to take pictures for free? Have you ever looked at someone's wedding photos and thought-- "Man, they're going to regret that choice!"? Well, maybe I am a jerk, but I have had all of these thoughts before and I knew that I did not want any of the above for our wedding. Instead, I wanted to invest in photographers who were experienced, professional, creative and utilizing top notch equipment. Enter Ayres Photogrphy. I'm not sure how I came across their work, but once I found their blog, I knew that I wanted them to shoot our wedding. With each blog post, I saw a story. Their pictures allowed me to understand the story of the couple, their love, and their wedding day. I immediately contacted Jenn and Ben Ayres to set up an appointment. After being welcomed into their home, seeing more of their work, and talking to this warm husband and wife team, I felt no reason to contact any other photographers. Their creative photo-journalistic style was exactly what we were looking for... and, as an added bonus, they really could not have been any nicer! After making the decision to work with them, we scheduled engagement photos. While older generations might not understand the need for this (I can still hear my mom questioning the necessity), I cannot recommend doing an engagement session enough. Most importantly, our photos came out beautifully and really capture a special time in our lives. Beyond that, the engagement session helped us get to know Jenn and Ben better and also allow us to become more comfortable in front of the camera which was quite valuable for our wedding day! They were patient, fun and open to any ideas that we wanted to try out. After being so pleased with the engagement shots, we couldn't wait to see what our wedding photos might be like. However, little did we know that we would be getting married in the midst of the November Storm! Because Jenn and Ben live in one of the areas that got hit the hardest (oh and did I mention she was 8 months pregnant?!!), they had every reason to bail on our wedding. Yet, they amazingly dug themselves out, broke travel bans, and drove many hours to get to us in time! When Jenn promised that they'd be there NO MATTER WHAT when we signed the contract, she truly meant it... and words can't express what that meant to us. Even after crazy weather and several hours of travel, they still managed to capture our day from beginning to end perfectly. We have the most beautifully composed, skillfully captured, detailed, funny, touching, personal photos from our day. Jenn and Ben went above and beyond for us and it made every penny spent on them absolutely worth it. 5 stars and beyond!
