A wonderful food and gourmet store in the heart of Paris. It's quite small and very popular with both tourists and locals alike. They have a variety of local gourmet items including their famous caramels. They also have ingredients to make speciality French delights such as cans of chestnut paste to make a Montblanc or fine baking chocolate for a delicious cake. This was a David Leibovitz rec for us bakers and it is on the mark! Great prices for Valrhona baking chocolates, Madagascar bourbon vanilla, nuts, you name it. This is the souvenir store your friends/family want you to visit! Don't leave without vanilla beans! A small handful of long slender beans come in a See-thru test tube type package for an amazing price not to be found anywhere stateside... (see pics..many Yelpers post d the beans pic) Other Yelp reviews are spot-on with the mustards and the chocolates and tiny jarred fruits.. amazing prices and very rare at home. The hazelnut cream, (comes in a tube), is another fabulous gift. Bring an empty suitcase for this or you will kick yourself when you're buying one. read more

This is my heaven. I walked into the store stating at a bag of fleur de sel and rock salts, confused AF. "How do they price the salt? I don't get it. 1€50... Can't be." The lady next to me who happened to be American as well overheard me thinking outloud to myself. "Yup, that's really the price... for the whole bag. You are standing in the middle of a cook's/baker's heaven." When you walk in, take your time to feast your eyes on the incredible selection of cooking spices, goods, etc. I think the hardest part is trying to stay calm from the excitement of quality/rare (U.S.) goods for ultra cheap prices. The selection is amazing and I had to go twice in my visit to Paris. Next time I return I'll be dedicating space in my luggage for this place. I was recommended this store by Cook'n with Class - where I learned to make croissants - and boy was this recommendation a winner! I don't normally do free ads in my Yelp reviews, but this store recommendation was too good not to credit them. By the way, are you looking for the chocolate batons/sticks that the French put into their pain au chocolat? Just ask - they have them stashed in the back. I needed souvenirs to bring back home from Paris. I guess that's how I stumbled upon here when searching up some unique markets to check out while in town. I was looking for truffle oil and foie gras to bring home into the states, as well as possibly some baking stuff for my younger sister. They had soooooooo much chocolate, candy, and baking stuff. It was heaven on earth. I wanted to buy everything, but I kept to my mission and mostly only checked out what I needed. I bought three cans of foie gras and three bottles of truffle oil for everyone back home to try out :) I'll come back here next time I'm in Paris for more goodies. Also, the people that worked in the store were really helpful in asking what I was looking for and explaining the different foie gras to my friend and I. P.S. This little store is close to the Etienne Marcel metro stop and a little tricky to find since it's situated off the main street. Anyway, I was there for one purpose and one purpose only and that was on a hunt for some awesome chocolate that a friend raved about. I went there to pick up a whole bunch of chocolate (which I can't remember the name now so will come back to update) The chocolate was located to the right of the store along the wall. There were different brands but one particular brand was wrapped in solid colors. I bought a few variety box ones for my family and picked up a few regular size bars for myself--specifically 2 of hazelnut (noisette), 1 of berries and 2 of orange flavors. Now I'm kicking myself after returning to the states and trying out the chocolates that they were all good but the berry one was especially good. I tried googling to see if I could order them online and I could not without having to pay a hefty shipping fee as well as markup on prices. Oy, I will be sure to send a list of items to get for friends who plan to visit Paris some time this year. Anyway, this store carries other specific and quality ingredients used by culinary chefs there. Definitely add this place to your list of places to check out. If you bake or create candy (or you just want to eat exotic/rare sweets) come here to see all those ingredients you have read about but never saw (even in the best store in your town). The prices are high but this is high-end stuff; not your usual multi-colored sprinkles. The trick is to pick out your items, get them written up and then pay at a different line and get back quickly to claim your stuff. Personally this does not make sense. My purchases ended up in the bag of another person so when i came back with my receipt the young lady chased down another buyer to retrieve my items! In preparation for my trip to Paris, I kept coming across this store in several (ok maybe two) cooking/baking blogs that I follow. So on to the list of places to check out while I was on my trip and this place is pretty much almost pure heaven if you're a baking nut like me. Things I love about it - how about it's right off a Parisian Market Street; which I've been visiting almost daily during my trip there. Their huge selection of stuff that it completely boggles the mind as to what the hell am I going to buy to bring back home as gifts to friends and not nom it all myself. Plus, you know it's good when the locals come in and are super friendly and give you recommendations, it's a bonus and isn't too crowded with tourists like some other places. I agree with other reviewers that it is a bit odd that we give our items to someone who packages up our items, then they hand you a bill of sorts and you go to the cash desk, which is in the centre of the store facing the entrance when you walk in. But hey, I'm good with it. Also, this is the place that introduced me to Sea Salt Butter Caramels - so thank you and definitely a must visit if you're around the area. read more

I'd wanted to come to this store for a long time. I love to bake, and this store, while smaller than I expected is a baker's dream. I was short on time, so I only got to look around a little bit, but I was happy to finally find a place that sold pearl sugar! I also picked up some vanilla beans at prices much cheaper than I could get at home. The whole back and forth lines for purchasing your goods is a little confusing, but don't worry - the staff will send you to the spot you need to be in. This should be a must see stop for any baking fans in Paris. I only wish I had more luggage room to bring back more goodies. read more

Great shop for serious bakers and finding cheap food gifts. I bought some coffee extract called Trablit. There were jars of mustard for 2€ and lots of baking chocolate, nuts, and dried fruit. I did pick up a sizable jar of pear jam, but it wasn't until I left Paris that I realized my sealed jar of jam had a spot of mold floating at the top and I had to toss the whole thing. This place is such a treasure! I first stopped in last year after reading David Lebovitz' blog, and I ended up talking to the owner for half an hour in my broken French. However, in the intervening year I managed to use or give away almost all of my purchases, so this year I had to return for more! Sadly, I didn't see my friend again, but the staff was wonderfully helpful and the goods are the best. G. Detou = J'ai de tout = "I have some of everything," so that's what you can expect here. Most of what they have is super-specialized baking stuff, like chocolate and sugar flowers, but I come here for truffles, cherries in syrup, Faillot and Pommery mustards, tinned sardines with lemon zest and other delicious souvenirs. They're pricey (it's Paris) but far less so than at other shops; I can get a jar of mustard and a bar of chocolate for 5 Euros, and they make a nicer gift than a T-shirt or keychain. Note: Don't miss the second half of the shop, right next door, which is refrigerated -- olives, meats, all kinds of other lovely things. Enjoy! read more

G. Detou is a small épicerie located in Les Halles. This shop is a little slice of baker heaven. They have chocolate and cocoa from Valrhona, Voisin, Bonnat, Cocao Barry, and Michael Cluizel. They have a large assortment of quality nuts, teas, honey, mustards, preserved fruit, and silver dragees and sugared violets for decorating which can be impossible to find. read more

One of my favourite store for shopping special pastry ingredients. Here you have all you need to make perfect macarons or delicious chocolate cakes (with a great choice of chocolate by Valhrona) The price are really decent for the high quality and if you are lucky you could just bump into a pastry chef shopping. A minus one because it is always a bit messy and the staff can be arrogant sometimes. Just go and get some salted caramel sauce (salidou) or Valhrona Ducey blond chocolate. read more

Authentic foodie home chef heaven! It is a tiny shop that carries premium ingredients for baking, including Valrhona chocolate, as well as spices, mustards, and French sea salts. I love coming here to purchase salted butter caramels as gifts for friends and fleur de sel to bring home to my own kitchen. I know I can order some things off of Amazon, but I love being able to say that I brought my ingredients back from France. Bring your items to the open counter first and they will give you a ticket. Then take your to the glassed in counter where you can pay for your gourmet items. read more

Ok. This place is AMAZING!!! I've been traveling back and forth to Paris for quite some time. I have also taken tons of cooking classes, etc. I was not aware of this store until my most recent trip. When I was living in Paris for a couple months and wanted to try out my baking skills at my apartment. So I stumbled on this store from a google search. It is located is a SUPER cute area, with a ton of stores, and restaurants. So you can make a fun afternoon/evening of it. I, on the other hand, took literally everything I could fit and carry in my shopping bag and purse while balancing other bags and carrying an umbrella. Let's just say, my biceps were on fire, but my heart was happy! I bought several chocolate items in large quantities the chocolate pan au chocolate sticks, and chocolate for melting to cover candies, and etc. I bought baking powder and cinnamon, etc. I know I could have made salted caramel, but I bought it there too. I was totally loaded down with packets of yeast, nuts and maple cookies. So perhaps, in reading what I just wrote I can see I may have gone a "tad" over board. BUT, it was totally worth it. love this cute little store full of everything a pastry chef (or wanna be pastry chef) could want! stopped by here to grab some vanilla powder, vanilla beans, and truffle oil. the store is small but it is full of great finds. peppercorns, salts, chocolates, truffles, foie gras...seems like you name it and they'll have it. checkout is a bit confusing though. you have to give the guy in front your purchases, he'll then give you a list of the costs and hold onto your goods, you then walk to the women behind the glass counter to pay for the goods...then you go back to guy to pick up your goods...not sure why it's organized this way... great shop in les halles/montorgueil. a must stop in paris! read more

I went to G. Detou after it was recommended to me by my french baking instructor, Briony, from CooknWithClass (in Montmartre- very highly recommended classes!). I specifically wanted to get a large container of vanilla beans that I had seen in the classroom, and she recommended going to G. Detou. We made a point to get there, and it was such a fun experience! I'm not sure if it is supposed to be a gourmet shop or a bulk shop (or both!), but they had a great selection of everything you need to bake! It's not the usual "grocery store" type of products. After watching the locals for a few minutes, I picked up on the pattern (that other reviewers have mentioned here)- first you pick out your items, then you go to the register to the left where they bag them up & give you a receipt- you take that receipt to the register to the right where you actually pay for the items & then you go back to the register to the left to pick them up with your paid receipt. I think they do this because a lot of people come in looking for hard to find items & the register to the left was gathering things together for people to make the shopping experience easy for them. I also want to mention that I speak un petite pur (a little bit) of french, but my trip to this store did not require more than a merci from me!
