Do not waste your time. I scheduled not one, but two different appointments over the course of 3 weeks, and they canceled BOTH of them on me. I explained that I needed extensions for an upcoming wedding and they reassured me that they would get me in. Just completely unprofessional. I don't understand how you can run a business and consistently cancel on clients willing to spend hundreds of dollars. Taking my business elsewhere.... sigh. read more

REVIEW FROM 4/7/2023 - STEER CLEAR OF GABRIELLE'S I trusted Melanie Amos to cut my hair back in April 2023, and she did not deliver what was promised. I showed Melanie an old picture of MYSELF, not someone from Pinterest or Google, MYSELF. It has been a month since I emailed Gabrielle's regarding a refund and radio silence. I NEVER received a response - my email was completely ignored - which seems to be a pattern with Gabrielle's customer service. The picture I showed Melanie was a picture of me with shoulder length hair. I went into the salon with 95% dry hair because every knowledgeable hair stylist knows you can't cut curly hair wet, but Melanie decided to wet it before cutting it. I was hesitant, but I gave her the benefit of the doubt because I had gotten my hair cut by multiple stylists at this salon over the past six and a half years. When she was done, my hair was the length I requested, so I paid (and tipped) and left. When I got home and my hair had dried, that is when I noticed that she had cut so much hair off that my hair was CHIN length. She had cut my hair into a French bob. In my experience, I usually give my curls about a week to settle after a hair cut. Even after a week, my curls had in fact not settled and I am stuck with a haircut that I HATE. I NEVER expected that I would have an experience with this salon since I had been a customer since 2016. I have recommended this place to another person who has also been a paying customer at Gabrielle's. I put a lot of trust and faith in Gabrielle's and Melanie Amos and was let down 100%. A month later, and I still had not heard back and still HATED my haircut. I called this salon last week feeling desperate, stressed and so self consciuos. I explained my situation that I was switching salons and that because I have trichotollomania, I am very sensitive and wary to talk about or let anyone touch my hair. Everyone I spoke to made me feel like this place is a warm and safe environment. They put me on the cancellation this and when they called, i dropped everything to go to my consultation. First of all 1. a women owned business (hell yeah) 2. a black women owned biz (at least from who I met.) (DOUBLE hell yeah) I was in tears after my consultation with Lylanda, I felt like she was truly in invested in creating a solution PERSONAL to me. She was all warmth, communication, and knowledge. After 2 years of searching, I have FINALLY found an exceptional Black salon in Austin! I from LA and was struggling to find a high-quality Black hair stylist in Austin. I used to just get a basic relaxer, and had long, healthy hair. After several bad experiences with other Austin stylists and subpar relaxers that seriously damaged my hair, the breakage got out of control and I was forced to cut my hair into a short bob (pictured) which I hated. What's worse is that even after I cut it, my hair was still extremely dry and damaged, making it almost impossible to grow back out. I decided I would try hair extensions for the first time, but my old stylist did a bad job securing the extensions, so pieces were falling out on an almost weekly basis. Finally, a friend recommend Gabrielle's, and the rest is history! I booked a consultation appointment which was wonderful. A hair extension specialist walked be through my options in terms of install, hair textures and lengths, and cost, and also asked my helpful questions about my lifestyle, how I usually wear my hair, and what my long-term hair goals are (in his case, to grow out my natural hair again!) As someone very new to the world of hair extensions, I found this process to be extremely helpful, and made me feel more comfortable taking the jump to spend quite a lot of money on new extensions. I opted for expert stylist (who I believe is also the owner of the salon) Lylanda Edwards, and she did an AMAZING job with my new extensions. I had my old (poor quality) extensions taken out, got a relaxer, got a B3 conditioner, and had new extensions put in via a Malaysian install. I should note that this was right before quarantine happened, meaning I would have to go 12+ weeks without seeing a stylist. I was terrified that pieces of my extensions would fall out or come loose, but I can confirm THESE EXTENSIONS ARE QUARANTINE-PROOF!! Not a single piece came loose at all, and they looked great even with nearly 3 months of new growth. My real hair is stronger, healthier and longer than before, and Lylanda has been so patient in answering my questions and recommending products and techniques to keep my extensions looking beautiful. They stole $1,000 for me. Last December (2022) I went for a consultation and decided I was interested in hair extensions. I paid for the consultation and booked a date/paid for the hair extensions ** with the guarantee that if I changed my mind within 15 days they would not keep my money for the hair **. (I have that in writing). I told them at the time of the consultation that I was unsure if I would do it or not, depending on plans to go out of town. They assured me it was okay due to the cancellation policy, but they "needed the money" to hold the appointment. I called and emailed a few days later ** well within the 15 day period ** (all documented) and let them know I was no longer going to do the extensions. Not only did I not get my money back, I did not even get a RESPONSE. It has been months - I have reached out countless times. They still have my $1,000. Horrific. -- Update: I finally heard back from the owner (initial purchase was 12/22, it is now 10/23) - she was EXTREMELY rude - and get this: not only will they not give me my $1000 back, they will not give me the hair either. So, since I cannot get the extensions in, they are keeping the $1000. Sickening. It makes sense that they operate this way, seeing as how awful the owner was to me on the phone. She essentially told me it's my problem. Claimed no responsibility for her employees telling me I had 15 days to cancel the hair the first time I went. I wish I had never step foot in that place. I have never had sewn in hair extensions. This was an amazing first experience! Lylanda was so helpful. Made a consultation appt with her that took about 15 minutes. She educated me on the type of extensions, then we went on to decide a blend of colors to match my hair. Since my hair is highlighted, she had to pick three shades of blond. She was such an artist picking the right shades. When she put them in she blended them in so expertly. People have noticed my hair looks good, but few have called me out on having hair extensions. If I had read the recent reviews, I may not have made an appointment, but I was swayed by the overall 4 star ratings. I cannot give this salon 4 stars but I am also not going to say they were that bad. I have lived in Chicago for the past 6 years and my stylists have all been top notch, up on current styles and I always left the salon feeling fabulous. When I left this salon, I kind of felt like Shirley Temple as my hair was way too curly and not the loose beach waves I am accustomed to. Martini destroyed my hair and my scalp. I have had extensions for 10+ years and not once has this happened. I went in to get my extensions pulled up, and when my hair was getting washed, i felt Martini struggle. She left me in the bowl then put my hair in a towel as I went back to her station. She had done my hair install with that same extension brand before and was aware of the length, yet she allowed my hair to get MATTED LIKE A DOG. I felt her pulling at my hair and began to get nervous, i started to feel HUGE MATTES. I told her i was getting anxiety and she said she had another client and I'll have to wait. Knowing how matted hair gets from bad to worse, i began to panic more. She then told me i'd have to GO HOME LIKE THAT and come back tomorrow to have it fixed. I was in complete shock and began to cry in the the middle of the salon out of fear my hair was about to get completely cut off. Thankfully the manager and Melanie (who were very kind and saved me from having to get my real hair completely chopped off) removed the extensions. I suffered significant hair loss and my damage to my scalp. My hair was part of me, and I honestly have been depressed and crying non-stop since. For full transparency, I have never been to Gabrielle's Salon; thus, I try to be a fair person; so, I will rank the salon 5/5...........SAYING THAT.....I will NEVER go there because paying for a consultation for Hair Dreams extensions is just flat out... WRONG!!! Because of a series of education/career related relocations, I have lived in numerous big cities (Manhattan, Chicago, DC, St. Louis): in each city, I found salons that specialized in Hair Dreams extensions....but NEVER was I charged a consultation fee! I'm talking about salons like "Hair by Moses" in Washington DC whom applied celebrity extensions. (I couldn't care less about celebrities or Kim Kardashion sp????; but, pictures are on the internet). When paying $2000-$3000 for Hair Dreams extensions, I'll save us both the humiliation and hubris of you asking for a $35 consult fee. Instead I'll take that $35 and apply it to an airline ticket home to have my Hair Dreams extentions applied at The Christina White Salon in St. Louis. Thanks to the previous reviewer that warned of such Nickle-and-diming: but the buck stops at paying for hair consultations! To the rest of you, go spend your ~$2500 at a salon (not including any other services such as color) you have the audacity to charge for the consultation? I really feel ripped off. I totally understand the need to make money but what happened to me was outrageous. I am disappointed in the outcome. I was charged over $500.00 for the hair. $399.00 to install the hair. and $160.00 to pull up the wefts when I needed the tightening. I guess I had sucker written all over my face. I have since consulted with other salons and professionals and have been advised that I was not given a full run down on how to truly care for the extensions and that I was taken advantage of by this salon. After reading the reviews on yelp and Facebook, I made an appointment for a shampoo and deep condition. I picked Kiara based off the reviews and I'm so glad I did! Kiara has a wonderful personality and she gives the best scalp scrub. She's a trooper for putting up with my shrinkage. Now I come back every 2-3 weeks to get my hair done by her. I went to go get a blowout by the Stylist name Jessica. She was awesome! I hadn't gotten my hair trimmed in over 2 years or blown out for that matter. She gave me a great deep conditioner. She as well as another stylist did a great job washing it, blowing it out, and flat ironing it. I definitely had to get my ends trimmed and she did an excellent job at that as well. She did not over book and I was in and out of there within a reasonable time for the length of and thickness of my hair. My hairdresser Tanya Steele has relocated to Gabrielles Salon. Bear in mind, I am not a fan of anything north of the river. I was not too excited about visiting the salon, but Tanya does a fantastic job on my hair and has pretty much weaned me from chemical relaxers. Check out the Island Blowout!! So, when I arrived at the salon, I was hyped that the Texas Rib Kings were next door. I have been meaning to check out their ribs, but I do not go to North Austin for ANYTHING. Anyway, I do like the concept of Gabrielle's, it is a one stop shop for everything, I think during my next hair appointment, I plan on getting pedi and purchasing some of the Carol's Daughter Bath Products that are sold in the salon. It is so refreshing as a African-American to visit a salon that has "our products" prominently displayed, rather than making that special trip to Sally's or ordering from the Internet. As progressive as Austin likes to think they are, it is very exclusive to catering to the African-American populous. Love, love, love this place. read more

I decided to get a massage at Gabrielle's on my day off and it was a delightful experience. They have so many packages available and the staff members go out of their way to make you feel comfortable. After my massage, they gave me water, a comfy robe and some time to sit in a quite room before I was ready to leave. This was greatly appreciated because a massage can be awkward if you don't go often. It also doesn't hurt that my massage therapist was a super hot guy. Unfortunately, I don't remember his name. I was so relaxed that it slipped my mind. Since they have salon services, I got my hair done there too. I saw Keisha, who specializes in natural hair care. When she washes your hair, she finishes with a head, shoulder and neck massage. Her cut cost is relatively comparable to Austin area salons. Gabrielle's is a great concept. The hair stylists have their own pseudo-office space. There is a barbershop in the back, then an area for nail services. The spa area is on the other side of the building. I went to the salon Tuesday. I am new o Austin and was looking for a hairstylist. I called a week in a half ahead to schedule an appointment and I made it clear to the person who was making the appointment that I was a new client and needed to know prices for a wash/blow dry style...she reassured me it was $55 and told me who my stylist was. (Lylanda)Got there waited 10 extra minutes while my stylist was giggling and laughing with the person leaving. I waited patiently. The receptionist was very kind and professional.The stylist was nice she introduced herself and she started to wash my hair. So glad I didn't wear make up that day. Her hands were everywhere.water dripping down my face.She was very heavy handed(I would've liked a heads up). I was patient. Got into the chair we discussed I had just been here for about a week she proceeded to blow dry my hair after sectioning it into 4 parts... when blow drying she was so rough and my poor ears were burning from her brushing my ears with my hair.and you would've thought she was in a competition with a stylist there because of how fast she was going like a rushed job...but I was patient. She starts straightening my hair and I'm not sure who trained the Texas stylists but was straightened from the middle to the top then the bottom and I was confused but let her finish... my hair smells burnt from the amount of heat she applied and the amount of oil was ridiculous. Because she added what I think was holding spray andso much oil just after three days my hair is oily and flat...I asked her to apply 5 clip ins that I brought. The ending product was good it was the process that was bad.once I got to the counter I had planned to pay $55 plus whatever she charged to put in my clips (5) Because that's what I was told over the phone. She told me the amount was $75 for a natural blow out and then charged me 30 to put my clips in lol I laughed and gave her my card but asked where the amount came from she said it was levels and she was the master stylist....that had I asked for a level 1-5 I would've gotten the price of$55 ...my only concern was WHY THE GIRL AT THE FRONT DESK NEVER TOLD ME THAT WHEN I CALLED TO MAKE THE APPOINTMENT...that would've been very knowledgeable and good for new clients to know so they were not blind sided. I believe it was unprofessional and misleading for nobody to not give that kind of information especially when I called TWICE to make sure . What if I only prepared to bring $55 and a tip? I am not pleased with the experience and will never go back. Trust me what she did was NOT worth $115 and I'm assuming she took her own tip. Whomever the receptionist was that made my appointment needs to be trained and able to give correct information and they might want to explain the "levels" of stylists before someone comes in and not after your hair is already done. For a number of reasons, I hate growing my hair out. One of which being I never know what to do with it the longer it gets. And I'm always afraid of what it might look like once I get it styled. I also didn't know of any salons I could trust do my hair right since moving out here. This is the first time I got my hair done in 8 years (other than just shaving it all off). Jessica set me up with an awesome looking comb twist and it didn't take nearly as long or cost nearly as much as I thought it would. I'm really disappointed because the salon itself is beautiful and I was thrilled to support a woman owned business but I got a very expensive sew in that's been so tight that I've been unable to do anything with my head over the past week. When I called them asking for recommendations, I was told to continue to take ibuprofen (which I told them I was doing). Taking ibuprofen for over a week because of overly tight braids isn't sustainable. I now have no choice but to take everything out because of how tight it still is. After spending over $500 on a hairstyle that was supposed to last months, this whole experience feels like a complete waste of both time and money. (Plus, the hair stylist charged me an extra $40 for a detangling fee the day of because my natural hair wasn't detangled to her liking which was a surprise and felt unnecessary considering I helped her in detangling my hair further. read more

They do great hair but every time I come here they try to nickel and dime me with ridiculous fees. I came in to get my hair braided for my wig, so I asked in advance how much a wash and braid would be, and I was quoted $49. Then while she was doing my hair she said she'd charge me a detangle fee, which sounds bogus but I accepted it because my hair was a little more matted becAuse I had just taken out twists. Finally we finish and she charges me $89. I ask how she came up with the price and she says $49 for BRAIDING, $27 for detangle, $15 for shampoo. A SHAMPOO COMES WITH A SHAMPOO AND STYLE!!! Every time I go here they try to upcharge some way. I probably won't go back, but if I did I would pay first so they don't try to take advantage. After a great recommendation from a former employee and an awesome barber, Raymond Walker (he made my son's afro beautiful) and as I lamented that after 4.5 years I had found nowhere in Austin to take my daughter or myself to, he highly recommended Gabrielle's. After a a couple of rescheduled appointments (on our part) due to illness, and a conflict in schedules we finally made it on Tuesday, 3/14/17. My daughter is newly 7 and has never had a full salon experience. She had never had her hair straightened but has begged me for a long time. I knew it wouldn't be easy or a short process, but as a birthday gift, I acquiesced. Her hair is long, thick and curly, bushy and often super tangled. Jessica was super sweet and gentle. She took her time and checked in with my daughter frequently during the 40 minutes it took to detangle (it takes me longer!) Everyone in the salon was friendly snd professional from beginning to end.
