I didn't have pictures, but I knew I wanted my hair super short (above the ears short). The hair dresser kept asking me if I was sure and recommended she cuts by the shoulders. I wanted it as short as possible and was happy with the result. I have straight fine hair, and CNN Hair team did a great job adding volume with layers. Overall, I had a pretty good experience at CNN Hair Team Salon! I decided to stop by because it was highly recommended online for Asian hair. I got a haircut from Kelly, and while there was a bit of a language barrier, the receptionist was super helpful and came over to translate. The haircut turned out well and matched the photos I provided pretty closely. Getting a reservation was easy too - I just booked online. Parking was also easy, with plenty of free 2-hour street parking in front and a parking garage nearby. The one thing I'm not a big fan of, which I've noticed at many salons, is the men's/women's haircut pricing. I understand that traditionally women's haircuts can take longer due to length, and they do mention that men with longer hair may choose a different option. However, my hair is pretty short, and I'm not entirely sure how they calculated the pricing. My haircut, which included shampoo, came to $45. I've had my hair cut with various hairstylsts before and now settling with Eugene. His skills are top notch and he takes his time to meticulously cut your hair right. He's gentle and is very attentive and it's been a relaxing experience every time. My hair is thin and slightly wavy so it is not easy to cut, so I definitely recommend Eugune if you are looking for a skilled men's hair stylist. My only complaint is that he's too popular and you need to book out several weeks to secure a spot haha. I used to call or make an appointment at the front desk right after my haircut but I realized that it's easier to just book online. Anyone knows that finding a great hair salon where you can trust they will do you good is like finding a good therapist or dentist. Min Kim is such a professional with his skills. Doesn't speak much English...and has his staff who will interpret for him. I trust his vision and care. We decided to give Min a try despite the negative review he received recently. Unfortunately, our experience mirrored the previous one. The haircut did not resemble the photo we provided at all. It took less than 20 minutes, and the back was not blended properly. Additionally, his hair was waxed, which was not in the picture, and hair clippings were all over his face. I called the salon to get the stylist's name, and thankfully, the receptionist was very sweet. She sincerely apologized, asked how they could make it right, and even offered to refund our money. I booked an appointment with Soo Hee and was pleasantly surprised with the results! Soo Hee really takes her work seriously. She was very meticulous with cutting my hair and really took the time to make sure everything was even and looked well done. Even when it came to styling my hair she did such a thorough and beautiful job. Unlike some other hair stylists that try to rush through the job, she really put in a lot of time, effort, and attention to detail into my haircut and styling. Before I started, I made an appointment with Jinny 3 weeks prior since I had an important guest coming to my home. The last time I did a haircut from her, I loved how her cutting style was stylish, and her finishing styling with flat iron was quite satisfying. When I arrived at the CNN hair shop, I arrived 15 minutes early. They immediately made me sit and start on my haircut. I also have asked Jinny if I am charged for getting a shampoo service since I saw it was an extra charge from their website. But Jinny told me it is already included service. So, I decided to get the shampoo service as well. Until getting a shampoo service, it was all terrific. However, once I came back to my sit, Jinny suddenly disappeared and went to the next appointment customer (when I was not even done?), and this young female stylist that I had never seen before took over me and started to style my hair only with a blow dryer. My hair is pretty curly. I have the genetic natural curly hair I do not like, so I usually tell stylists to flat the side, or if I put only volumes using a blow dryer, it's overly puffy and makes my head a fluffy cloud, which I don't wish to be. Jinny knows what my hair type is like; that's why I liked her about it and specifically chose her as my stylist. Through the email consultation with the CNN hair shop owner, he suggested different stylists when I initially wanted Japanese magic straight perm and Keratin service. Still, he once refused it due to my previous history of highlighting my hair with balayage (a very bright ash-brown color for bottom length) 8 months ago. I was not sure why is it still mattered that the highlights were done eight months ago (other hair shops I've been to were totally fine as long as it passes six months, it should not be an issue, this was the first time I got rejected to do another perm service due to a coloring that was done more than half year ago). Though I was trying to understand that he was overly concerned about the customer's hair condition, I did take his suggestion and decided only to cut my hair. The owner suggested other stylists, but I did tell him I only wanted to cut my hair with Jinny. I will choose his recommendation if it's another service, but I only trust her for the haircut. When it was two days before my appointment, CNN suddenly called me while I was at work, then unexpectedly asked me to change my appointment time to 30 minutes earlier due to the double-booking issue (which is their fault). They had two weeks to check and fix the schedule but decided to call me two days before my appointment. Nevertheless, I felt very unhappy since I work 5days/a week, and my Saturday schedule is pretty tight with other things. I even had a morning meeting with my client outside of the US and had only time available on Saturday the US time. It was a hassle for me to readjust my schedule for Saturday, but I succeeded in this mission. I have not told them about this since it is a very personal side of the story. But the reason why I am explaining here is, before even my appointment, I was feeling very unpleasant about their management and customer service quality, did not expect to have this type of inconvenience. When the unwelcomed (nor asked my permission first about this sudden swap of stylist) stylist started only putting volumes on my hair, my facial expression was not positive. The young lady also read my negative facial expressions of unconformity; she did ask me if I wanted a flat ironing styling (SO SHE KNEW THAT MY HAIR NEEDS FLAT IRONING!). I said yes. Then, she started to flat iron my TOP STRANDS only, which made me laugh with frustration. As a person who has curly hair and too much natural volume existing, you know, girls, you need to straighten your hair from the VERY BOTTOM OF YOUR HAIR STRANDS. Or, it isn't very sensible to straighten your hair since your underlayers are still VERY CURLY AND A LOT WITH VOLUME. You must start from the very under layers for straitening. It's common sense that even I, who is not trained, even know. Once everything was done, I was completely unsatisfied with everything, and despite the customer's unsatisfying experience, they charged me $63. For hair that is only in length, barely touching the shoulder line, and the haircut itself, I didn't even get to cut an inch! There is no distinctive length change after the service, and they charged me over 60 dollars! My total bill was $63. CNN did nothing to my hair. There's barely any change in my hairstyle, I am overly unpleasant about this experience, and they're over-charging me. The finishing styling lasted only an hour too. What is the point of going to a hair shop when the styling is not lasting even for an hour? and you charged me over 60? What a piece of shitty joke. I have emailed the owner about this experience, but the only reply I got from him is a long essay saying: "Sorry but not so sorry," no refund. read more

I think CNN is great because they truly understand how Asian hair works and everyone is nice. The reason why I can't give it 5 stars though is that sometimes I leave unsatisfied. I also think they left bleach on my shirt, hairline, and near my ears so my skin is having a dry reaction. I know hair is different for everyone so they can't guarantee the same results as a photo, but it really sucks that you spend SO much money and you don't leave 100% satisfied. Maybe only like 90% in my experience lol. However I've never had a BAD experience and overall they care about your hair. read more

This is a really great salon. Upon entry, it's super clean and there's someone there to greet you and check you in. Jin was my stylist and she did a fantastic job. To preface, I have very fine hair. I showed her a photo of what I was interested in/looking for and she offered me great advice and ways to do the cut I wanted while not making my hair look super thin and flimsy. She also dry cut my hair (which I personally like) so she was able to to see exactly how my hair naturally falls as soon as she cut it. She also gave me some tips for styling and curling my hair which I appreciated. In terms of price, I believe I paid $46ish for the cut (tip included, just the cut was $40). Coming from Boston, $40 for a cut is cheap, especially for the quality at which the service was performed. It was 100% worth waiting to cut my hair just to come here and have Jin work her magic. The final cut and styled product is amazing and I highly recommend anyone in the Austin area to come here - especially if you have Asian hair (whether it's fine like mine or thicker). It seems that predominately Korean styled hair is done here, and I get a 70/30 part above my right eyebrow so take that into account on my review. Gonna put a vouch in for Eugene's Men Haircut, and Perm at the expense of my appointment availabilities. The cuts from Eugene are great and still look good growing out. Great layers, and the perm is not bad. The pricing is not cheap however, and is pretty much the max of what I'm willing to spend on a haircut. Eugene's haircuts do include shampooing service though, so remember to use it or lose it. Lastly, if you schedule a perm and he really thinks you don't need one, then he'll happily recommend you wait a couple months or so, which I greatly appreciated. read more

I came here on a recommendation from a friend. I wasn't disappointed. I have long thick Asian black hair, and I've been looking for a no fuss place to get my hair done that does Asian hair well, similar to some salons you find in Houston. This place fits the bill, with some key differences. This place takes "walk-ins" meaning they'll schedule you an appointment at a time they think they can fit you in the same day. I got there at 10:30am, and got scheduled for 11:30am. However don't expect to be able to get more than a haircut like a balayage or perm without an appointment (I asked whether they'd be able to fit in a body wave perm without an appointment). Despite my disappointment about not being able to fit in a body wave perm, I found this reasonable and appreciated that I wouldn't be sitting in the chair for 6 hours bc they overbooked and are doing 5 girls at once with a single stylist like I would be in Houston. This place is mindful of their time constraints which is reasonable and nice. My stylist was Thuanly. Nothing particularly great or bad. Based on the reviews I've seen about this stylist, most of the negative reviews really have to do with how personable she is. This stylist is for those who don't like small talk and perhaps would rather read a book during this time. I found she was direct and blunt about the hairstyle I suggested. She clarified with me whether I wanted layers or not because the picture I showed was not a layered look. So we decided instead on face framing layers in the front, but none in the back. She had a mostly flat affect in this discussion and the whole discussion was short and to the point. I think she gave a good haircut, and it was definitely more styled with some simple curling and some blow drying, no extra chemicals or anything. I don't expect the styling to hold but I'm a ponytail and go kind of person so, my standards are probably not that high in the first place. With that being said I was able to read my book on my Kindle app without any small talk, which I found great. Only the necessities of how long I wanted my hair, the layers and a check when it's done. I was in and out in about 30 minutes. The only thing I probably would have a liked more is a better shampoo experience where you get a nice head massage, but I found that's usually dependent on the stylist on whether they're good at it or not. I scheduled a women's haircut with Min Kim. The gentleman is skilled and polite; however, he speaks very little English. I wanted to talk about my hair in depth, but due to the language barrier, this was not possible. With the help of another staff member who quickly acted as interpreter for us, I got a medium-length cut (just barely past my shoulders) with layers and rounded... edges, if that makes sense. He didn't cut the longest part of my hair straight across is what I meant, haha. I think I was a bit difficult. I wanted a longer cut at first, but then changed my mind to a shorter cut later. But Min remained patient. Despite the simple guidelines he was given, Min was meticulous about cutting my hair. He used very little product, and yet at the end, my hair felt the softest and smoothest it ever felt. When I woke up the next few days, I loved my haircut even more. If I spoke Korean, I'm sure he and I would have a better experience working with each other, but he did a good job nonetheless. I paid about $40 for my cut, probably because of how much hair he had to cut off. I would recommend CNN and would go back again. I'll probably choose a different hairstylist though, one who I can actually communicate directly with. I also wish that CNN would clearly outline on their website who could speak English independently! Their COVID-19 procedures are on point as well. Everyone was wearing a mask, only one other person was getting a haircut aside from me, they had me fill out an online covid-19 questionnaire on my phone, and took my temperature before seating me. I'm not ever going back. I've been to CNN Hair multiple times over the years since 2015 and even recommended this place to many of my friends. I'm extremely disappointed with my haircut. It turned out very choppy and at least 2-3 inches shorter than what I had requested. I even showed my stylist a photo of how I'd like it cut and discussed it with her briefly before my cut. On top of that, while I was getting my haircut, I overheard two of the stylists and one of the customers talking negatively about the Chinese community using the Korean language. To be specific, they spoke about how loud Chinese females are when they come to the salon and added that it was annoying because (in their opinions) they always sound like they're shouting. How unprofessional is it to insult your paying customers in a language they don't understand? I'm Korean and can speak/understand the language and it was incredibly uncomfortable to listen to their conversation. With that being said, I will no longer be coming here and will be letting all my friends in the Austin area to look elsewhere for their hair needs. read more

I asked for an ash blonde balayage and long layers with curtain bangs by Jin and I absolutely love it! I was a first time client and had my hair bleached prior to coming into the salon and was afraid I was not able to get the color/style that I wanted because of how damaged and brazzy my hair was. Jin was knowledgeable and made sure to explain the steps and procedures that she was going to do, and recommended me great advice. She did an amazing job! TLDR; Tommy Song is highly recommended. He's very skilled, honest, helpful, and seeks to give his clients the best results. He's up to date with trends, and knowledgeable of different hair/skin textures (oiliness, dry, etc). He is pleasant, soft spoken, and welcoming. I held off on writing a review for Tommy until after a full year having my perms by him because I wanted to know how my hair would grow out. This review is for Tommy Song for Korean root perm, and S-Curl & C-Curl perms. After the first 4 months, my curls started to loosen, and that's when the real magic happened. I've never been complimented on my hair's health and luster. I rarely go to the salon because I trim my own hair about 4-6 inches at a time. I thought I was cutting all the curls off, but to my surprise, I gave myself the "permed the ends only" look, so it STILL looked put together. Sohee Han cut my long hair after I grew it out for 2 years. The result was neat and short similar to the picture I had shown and despite a small language barrier, Sohee did her best with English to provide the best service possible. Towards the end of my haircut, she explained how to keep up my hair, why a certain style fits a certain head shape, pros/cons of certain products, and some tips moving forward. The environment is a bit quiet which can be a pro or con depending on how you look at it. Came here on Friday. Not too much conversation between the hairdressers (which could be a testament to their focus.) Overall - I left with neat hair and a friendly encounter! I WOULD come here again. =) read more

I called several times to try and book an appointment after seeing reviews and perusing their website. Since they have an app they use for appointments, I booked it through the app. I received confirmation from the app, as pictured, that I was scheduled for a hair appointment. I arrived ten minutes early to find that not only do I not have an appoibtment(?), but the salon is closed. I'm looking at the posted times for the salon to be open right in front of me on the door (mon-sat 10-7) and literally no one is here and all of the lights are off despite it being 2:15 on a Wednesday. I'm incredibly disappointed because I wanted to try this place out due to the reviews, but how can I when no one answers the phone and I book using their method of choice only to find that not only is no one here to cut my hair, but no one is here at all during times that are posted that they should be open?! The placement & technique of the babylights are gorgeous & really well done. I appreciate the time & energy she put into it, but the color was not what I communicated. I told her I didn't want blonde, I wanted a medium brown, but it turned out to be more of an ashy light brown. I like the way it looks, but it's not what I originally wanted & I don't think ashy suits me personally. The ends of my hair are basically grey. I may have to fix it myself. I think the placement is a bit too high up in the front for my liking as I said I still wanted my natural color to show, but it'll grow out eventually. I'm being picky bc this ended up being $522. I added a trim at the end bc I felt like I had to bc my ends were unnecessarily fried.... I think that was considered a full price hair cut which I don't agree with, it was half an inch cut, I could have done that myself. I just think $522 is a lot considering my experience & what I received. I took a whole day off of work, sat there for 8 hours, & dropped $500 on something I'm not completely happy with. My appointment was at 10 AM, I was seated at 10:30. My stylist was Thaunly & she was nice but seemed pretty disinterested which is fine. I have long, thick asian hair with a previous balayage at the ends. I wanted neutral medium brown colored babylights with my roots still significantly showing. When discussing the color, I tried explaining that I just didn't want orange-y red undertones but I also don't want grey ashy undertones, basically I want something in the middle (neutral, not warm or ashy). The pictures I showed her- she said were warm-toned so I just agreed to do something warmer & trusted it. I knew this would take a while bc of my hair thickness + length, but my hair is also not the thickest. She complained a bit about how long it was taking & seemed dissatisfied with how my hair was lifting, but like idk what I'm supposed to do about that. I felt like her comments at times were not helpful or necessary & really brought down the vibe for me. I could already tell part of the bleach was on for too long & some parts of my hair ended up white which is unnecessary damage. She didn't communicate very well the color she would end up attempting. When she was brushing out the teased parts of my hair it was EXTREMELY PAINFUL & more unnecessary damage. She was ripping at my scalp so hard. I told her it was hurting yet she didn't ease-- she was ripping through the teased parts which are at my roots. It felt so painful yet I was just trying to get through 30 min of this. A day later, my scalp is still so sore, irritated, & I'm seriously in pain. Even parts of my face where the toner stained are itchy, red and irritated. I'm fine with a little tugging and brushing things out, but anyone knows that brushing through knotted hair with full force is going to hurt badly. I'm iffy about my hair. Don't get me wrong, it looks good but it's just not what I was looking for & normally I would let it go but it's $500. In some lighting it just looks straight up grey and I just wanted simple medium brown hair. read more

First time here and was excited to find a highly rated salon for Asian hair. I was nervous and the front seat recommended Thuanly Ho. I wanted to go short so it's a major change. I tried to explain what I wanted and honestly I got mostly negative comments and pushback. She was not really open to conversation or having any emotions to being there. It's not because of a language barrier because clearly she made unpleasant remarks. Example how often do you wash your hair, you have a lot of oil glands. Lol. I didn't wash my hair before because typically the salons wash your hair before a cut. So keep that in mind no washing which is the most relaxing part sometime. Overall, the cut was decent but lacked the extra care. Found random longer pieces that I had to cut off. Overall, the price is good $40 but I will not be going back to this girl. read more

I don't usually write reviews but I left this place very disappointed. Thuanly Ho was my stylist and she didn't speak or say hi. I felt extremely unwanted at this salon. While blowdrying my hair her eyes were all around rather than focusing on my hair. She failed to apply any heat protection until I asked her to, and then burned my scalp multiple times without apologizing. When she "finished" my hair, parts of it were still wet and curly. My hair looks far from styled, and I hope the owner can have a little chat with this stylist. read more

Expect to Be Second-Class & Get Poor Service If You're Not Korean. RUN If You're CHINESE. YES, They DISCRIMINATE Against Chinese (China/HK/Taiwan), Who They Dislike I rarely write reviews but as a CNN customer of 8+ yrs who normally tips 20%+, it's enough. YES, they discriminate. YES, they denigrate their Chinese clients while yelling themselves. YES, it's gotten worse through the years. There's a service hierarchy. Here's what you can expect as non-Korean customer: 1/ Expect to wait 35-40 min past your appt and get a 10 min haircut (female) IF a regular, Korean customer without an appt wants to squeeze into your scheduled time. Yes, Eugene does this. Don't expect to be heard. They believe this is ok and will tell you this is why, though they may have realized to hide this now? 2/ If another customer needs the equipment you're using, you no longer need it. Yes, they'll literally take the equipment you're using/sitting under and give it to another customer. Forget the timer they just set. They do not need to explain themselves. 3/ Long term, regular customers get a discount from Eugene but not if you're NOT Korean. Accidentally learned this from a new CNN staff, who thought the discount was given to all Eugene's long-time clients. 4/ Their stylists can treat you however they want. You don't get to pick your regular highlight color. Thuanly Ho tells you want she'll do. She doesn't care what you want. And she can NOT be bothered to mix colors - Expect to wait 5-10min+ on her multiple times when she walks over to another stylist to chat while coloring your hair. - Don't forget you'll need to do your own timing for your treatment and find her when you're done. Bc it's not her job. Fear not. She'll burn your scalp off while styling your hair. Yes, she'll yank your head back & forth as well. See her other reviews. 5/ If you're Chinese (Taiwan, HK, China), know CNN Salon looks down on you. They consider you inferior - ugly, loud, smelly, dumb, incompetent...while taking your money. This has been going on for years. It starts at the top and goes through the staff. In short, it's allowed. Before CNN/their fans refute/attack me or this review, ck the other reviews - CNN staff openly denigrating their Chinese clients, Thuanly Ho, etc... This review won't impac their business so no one needs to meltdown. People don't care. Jin was such a sweetheart to work with! I came with probably three different shades of blonde/brown on my head & it was a mess. I wanted to have a rooted look to my hair and add some dimension. Needless to say she did awesome! She also added b3 which prevented my hair from further damage. My hair felt healthy afterwards! She was also very attentive, offering my drinks and making sure I was comfortable! I've also attached what my hair looked like before and after! After a few washes the ashy color kind of went away & it's a lot more warm toned now but it's nothing a toner can't fix!
