Upon discovering it I was excited to see that it's been consistently ranked high on the top salons of the year across the whole country! I took their online quiz and got 3 matches, but none of them had availability on the day I wanted. I ended up scheduling with Lynzie Quintero. I messaged Lynzie to ask about dimensional (babylight) coloring prices and they were sadly out of my current budget. I did switch that service out for the K-18 treatment which I've never done before. Lynzie was great throughout the appointment and very supportive of the questions I asked and patient with my inspo pictures. I have been coming to Urban Betty for over 18 years. This salon is one of my favorite places in Austin. it is well run, professional and a beautiful place to spend self care time. I have been to multiple stylists- and have experienced 5 throughout the years and have had extremely positive experiences with each stylist. My current stylist is Averie. Averie does my color, cut and extensions. She is truly a talent- just phenomenal. She has been able to match my color perfectly. i am so happy with my hair and feel like a new woman. She has gone out of her way to teach me proper hair care and maintain my extensions. She is honest and I trust her. Disappointed. I get my hair cut once a year and was excited for the service and the come out. I had an appointment to get my hair serviced for my birthday. I came in got my hair washed and cut with no styling. I paid the full price but felt like it wasn't right since I was short one service. I came back to talk to the receptionist and she handled the situation wonderfully, was really helpful and understanding. It was busy and no one was available to finish the service, she asked if I was able to come back tomorrow for the styling portion of the service and I said that's fine. Later that night, my best friend pointed out how uneven and choppy my hair looked at the end. I was unaware of it because the stylist didn't show me how my hair looked from the back when the cut was done. I came back the next day to get the styling done, the stylist that helped me was great! I told her about the unevenness and she helped fixed it up for me. Very caring and respectful. She checked in every step of the way which is a great quality. I felt understood and confident in my stylist! The front desk informed me that the service was $50 and I explained my situation. They mentioned that there were no notes made and the best they can do is a discount. I was very disappointed, considering I had to move my schedule around, come back, to fit in a missing service and got charged for it. Essentially paying twice as much for one. I left feeling genuinely disappointed by how this was handled. I was happy to be flexible and return another day, and I truly appreciated the staff who helped me. However, forgetting to add in the notes was not my error that resulted in me having to pay for a service I had paid for already the first time. Even with the discount, it felt disheartening and not quite fair, and I left feeling uneasy about the situation rather than satisfied. An inconvenience for my birthday as well. read more

I was looking for a new salon that specializes in hair color and after thoroughly searching, Urban Betty came up as one of the top rated on the list of options so I decided to give them a try! You go to their website and answer several questions, then they will match you with their hairstylist and you can choose from several stylists who match your needs. The best decision I made as I found Nina; my hairstylist; and she is the best! Nina is professional, friendly, sweet, pretty, has good communication, listens to what you want, she knows what she is doing, and last but not least she understands your hair. This place is located on 38th street in a shopping area where there are other businesses so there is plenty of parking spaces. The salon itself has nice and bright ambiance with the prettiest decor, and each station has cute & big mirrors and their washing station is located in one area in the back and it's very comfortable. All the staff were very friendly. For my first appointment with Nina was for my haircut. She listened to what I wanted and delivered! My hair was way past my shoulders at the time and had no shape, so I told Nina that I wanted a haircut that would make my hair look a bit thicker since my hair is so thin and fine. She exceeded my expectations! She cut the bottom of my hair with subtle layers so that it looks like it has more volume than it normally has, but she didn't cut way too much where it thinned my hair (like I experienced with my old salon). My second appointment with Nina was for my hair color. I communicated with her back and forth since my first appointment regarding what hair color I wanted before the actual appointment day. She told me to send her photos of the hair colors I liked and then we could go over what would work and wouldn't with my hair type and condition of my hair. I also told her that I didn't want a high maintenance hair color, so she suggested halo highlights. She communicated with me throughout the process which I liked because I was not left in the dark. The color turned out so beautiful and the exact color I wanted. She definitely nailed it!!! I loved my new hair color so much that I kept saying "I love my hair" constantly for the whole month. It's true, and my husband can second that. it has been 7 months and I still really like my hair color and cut. The price is not cheap but I think it's reasonable for what service and result you get! Actually ZERO stars. Negative stars. This was the WORST experience I've ever had at a salon. Due to hair breakage in several areas, I have to wear extensions just to make my hair look normal. The stylist there that installed...poorly...$1700 worth of extensions admitted (halfway through doing it) that she'd never actually installed a whole head of I-tips, since most of her clients have wefts. Over the 6 months that I saw Avery, she consistently failed to book enough time to do a decent job moving them up or replacing the beads. She was always rushing to get me out of the chair because her next client was already there and -despite being paid more per hour to do it than most lawyers make - complained constantly during my appointments that they take longer/are more labor intensive/her hands cramp/they're hard to see/"extension clients are picky." Her crappy attitude alone was enough to send me elsewhere, but I couldn't find another salon certified for this brand of extensions. At each visit, I'd bring in the extensions that had fallen out since the last appointment, but she couldn't be bothered to put them back in, and would insist that she couldn't see where any were missing while my hair got thinner and thinner. She told me at the outset that the copper beads needed to be replaced every other time because they will rust, stain the hair, and start to fall apart, but when they were due to be replaced in November, she'd only booked me for an hour, so she just moved them up again and left out the ones with beads that were "completely shot" because she couldn't be bothered to send an assistant to the back to grab some beads. Half a dozen extensions fell out within hours of that visit, and they continued to fall out constantly for the next month. I was counting down to my appointment on 12/19 when I intended to insist that she rebead/reinstall the ones currently in my hair - whether she'd booked enough time or not - and put back in all of the pieces that had fallen out. The night before my appointment, the salon called to tell me that Avery wasn't feeling well and wouldn't be in the next day. I explained that I needed to get in with someone else asap because my extensions were moved up 6 weeks ago when they were supposed to have been reinstalled/rebeaded, and they would all fall out if I had to wait until sometime in January. They rebooked me for 12/23 with a stylist named Lindsey who had clearly never done it before and had no idea what she was doing. She spent two hours pulling a bunch of extensions out from the back of my head before admitting that she couldn't get them back in. I left in tears with a pile of my extensions in a plastic baggie and even less of them left on my head than when I came in. My hair looks so weird and uneven that I couldn't leave the house over the holidays, and will need to have the rest of my extensions taken out, since there are green stains on them - and all over my hair - from the rusty beads. read more

I booked an appointment with Averie Walther at Urban Betty for highlights, color, and a cut. I'd checked the website, reviewed the prices, and was ready to invest in a professional salon experience to start embracing my natural gray. From the moment I walked in, the vibe was off. Averie asked about my color history, and when I mentioned I'd used box dye before, it was as if I'd said something shameful. Her tone changed completely -suddenly I was being warned my hair might "burn," and she insisted on doing a test strand (right near my crown, leaving a small bald spot). The test turned out fine, but she still refused to do the service, saying it would be "a lot of money anyway." At that point, I realized it wasn't about my hair it was about judgment. Maybe it was my Doc Martens and Alice in Chains tee, but she clearly decided I wasn't the "right kind" of client. What she didn't know is that I make more than enough to afford any service in that salon, and I came in ready to pay for quality, not attitude. So yes, Urban Betty lost a loyal potential client and my family and friends, too. The good news? I went to Apotheca Salon that same day, where they treated me with genuine kindness and respect. I asked for a "lived in" brunette color, and she nailed it!! I am naturally a brunette, but wanted something with dimension. She knew exactly what to do and customized a blend of highlights and low lights while blending out some old color from a balayage. Truly an artist and color expert!! My girlfriend and I chose Urban Betty for her haircut with blowout, excited about their reputation. Unfortunately, it turned into a really frustrating and expensive experience that left us both upset. The first stylist cut her hair, but it came out very choppy and uneven - sections were blunt and hacked in places, layers didn't blend at all, and it looked nothing like the smooth, polished reference photos she showed. On top of that, they didn't even complete the blowout portion of the service, leaving her hair flat and unfinished. She was clearly unhappy and mentioned it, and the staff offered for her to come back the next day for a "fix up" with a different stylist to do the blowout. They made it sound like a simple correction and didn't mention any extra charge. She returned the next day, and the second stylist did the blowout. At checkout, they charged her full price again for the second visit. We were shocked; this was just completing the original booked service that wasn't done properly the first time, yet we ended up paying double for a haircut and blowout she was never happy with. The whole thing was handled poorly - no real apology for the inconvenience or the disappointing results, and no effort to waive the second charge or make it right. It felt unfair and left us regretting choosing this salon. Simply it's not about the service that we were upset about, moreover about the way the service was handled as a whole. read more

The hype is accurate. The location is beautiful and funky and inclusive. I'd never had such an efficient hair appointment before while also not feeling rushed at all. They did exactly what I needed them to do with my hair - a long bob and the weight taken out! I think the only bit i'd say is that I wasn't asked how i wanted it styled at the end which was just to be styled with my natural waves, and instead automatically got a blow out. Let's not mention the fact that your location isn't an easy get to (pic provided - the entrance you can see is in a courtyard, and I have lived in Austin all my life. I know my way around), the receptionist was not timely to take my appointment time because I was there within my grace period (parking was a mess), and the stylist alleges the next appointment was too close in proximity to mine to have me seen. 10 minutes! That meant that this "stylist" booked me and, according to them, had an appointment following only 20 minutes later. I dont need any service rushed or booked this close. I love this salon! From the moment you walk in the front desk makes you feel welcome and comfortable. It has a fantastic vibe. I absolutely loved my cosmetologist, Sam! Not only was she so kind and fun to talk too, she gave me a haircut that i have been wanting a long time. I have very fine hair and she really knows how to work with fine hair and make it fit your face. She even took the time to show me how to style it! Which was over the top kindness in my book. I will definitely be going back and I would highly recommend to anyone especially Sam for those with fine hair. I never write one star reviews because I don't want to hurt a local business but I had a HORRIBLE experience today. Urban Betty discriminates again neurodivergent children and I want to make sure no one else has the experience that my daughter and I had today. I made an appointment for my seven year old daughter and specifically asked for a stylist who worked with children. The person who we had seen in the past was wonderful but is no longer there. We showed up at our appointment time of 4:30. We had to wait until 4:40 when our stylist walked in the front door. My daughter was having big feelings about getting her hair cut and ran out the front door while I was talking with the stylist, Amber, about her haircut. I left my bag and water and told her that I would be back and went to get my daughter from outside. When I can back in five minutes after she ran out, I went back to the chair and my things and the stylist were gone. I went to the front to let them know that my things were gone they said yes, it's 20 minutes past your appointment so your stylist can't see you anymore. I told her that they got us back ten minutes late and I told her I would be right back after getting my daughter. The stylist didn't even come back out, she was hiding in the back because she didn't want to cut my daughter's hair. The woman at the front was very rude, she was rigid and unflexible because she was protecting the stylist who doesn't want to engage with a neurodivergent child. I will NEVER frequent this business again. I have waited over twenty minutes for my appointment in the past, the time was just an excuse. This stylist just didn't want to cut my daughter's hair and she and the business clearly discriminate again neurodivergent children. read more

This place is a RIP OFF!!! They must not be paying their employees very well, because they price gouge their clients and deliver sub par service. I'll attach a copy of my receipt so you can see what I'm talking about. They nickel and dime for everything. Not only that, but if you book with one specific stylist, then you are liable to have some random trainee or assistant come in and work on your hair without your consent and then you're EXPECTED to tip them 20% of your ENTIRE BILL, in addition to the 20% that you're expected to tip the stylist - the only stylist that you initially booked with!!!! (I went in with very blonde all over highlighted hair and my roots had grown out about an inch. I said I wanted to grow out my natural hair color but wanted a subtle, natural looking transition while maintaining the platinum blonde that I had, especially towards the ends. A "reverse balayage/ombré effect", if you will. What I got was an all over mousy, dishwater muddy blonde color. I also said I just wanted to TRIM and didn't want to take off very much at all.) I will never go back to this place and do not support any business model that treats their clients like this. I wasn't even happy with the outcome of my color service as it wasn't what I asked for, but I don't trust to go back once again because my stylist had such an egotistical, haughty attitude, clearly didn't listen to what it was that I wanted because she was trying to train some assistant. So now, I honestly have a really bitter taste in my mouth, especially after being charged almost $500 for a simple root smudge, a very light touch up to my *babylights* (on the roots only) and a TRIM (NOT a haircut!!!) Mind you, my hair is fine and it's just past my shoulders. They're not even working with much and they're charging me this much! People who run their hair salon businesses like this really grind my gears!!!! Support independent stylists, and not these greedy salons. Do not support this place and their unethical, overpriced, exploitative business model. They pretend to care, that's where they get you. You've been warned!
