    The Frasier
    Jennifer T.

I love French Pastries and was hoping to find a dessert for my Birthday. This being the first year in many many years that I am eating Gluten I wanted a slice of cake for or a delicious pastry. Seeing Gaby's in passing at the market before I decided to stop by in hopes of finding just that. I was excited to see that there were still a few items available as most were sold out. Everything looked exquisite! I probably could have ordered one of everything. The pricing was a bit steep on some items or I would have. Besides the Pastries. They had Quiches, Crepes, Tartes, I believe they have sandwiches as well. There was one slice left of the Fraisier which I ordered. I also had to have a Creme Puff with Vanilla Creme. My husband was eyeing the Tarte Tatin as he loves apples. The Frasier.... It was heavenly. So creamy. It is not overly sweet and honestly just exactly what I was hoping for. The Creme Puff.....Wow. Another delectable mouth watering treat. Different than most that I have had in the best way. This is probably one of the best cream puffs I have had. Besides the Vanilla Cream that I ordered. They had Pumpkin Spice, Pistachio and Chocolate. I didn't see this one before my husband ordered it but I'm assuming it is the Tarte Tatin, he called it an apple tart but I'm sure it wasn't named that. Beautiful to look at. Every slice of Apple was expertly sliced and placed. It was Crisp but not too crisp. The apples used were just right. Chef Gaby took the time to give us serving suggestions for the Tarte. He was very friendly and happy to meet us. We felt very welcomed. You could see the passion he has for his craft and his enthusiasm for his customers. He and his desserts definitely helped to make my day a special one! Thank you. We will be back again!!

Vanilla crème puff, caramel pumpkin spice crème puff, and two canelles.

This place was awesome!! We tried the canelles first, and they were perfection: golden and caramelized on the outside with that soft, custardy center. The vanilla crème puff was light as air--delicate, fluffy, and filled with a cream that was perfectly balanced. We also tried the caramel pumpkin spice crème puff. The warm spice and the rich caramel was delicious but a bit too sweet for me. The woman working there was warm, welcoming, and clearly passionate about what she does.

Best cake in GR so delicious! The cream's light sweetness and hint of cinnamon perfectly complement the moist, nutty cake. The puff pastry is equally amazing soft, chewy, and filled with rich cream.

Crepe (ham, egg, cheese) SO GOOD!
    Ali S.

Absolutely delicious! I ordered the savory crepe (egg, ham, cheese) and it was unlike any other crepe I've ever had! It was generously loaded with fillings and had fantastic flavor. Chef Gaby and his staff were fun to talk with and made me happy I stopped by. Beautiful, enticing cases full of both sweet and savory breakfast items, pastries and desserts. This is a definite must at the market. Oh, and the crepe went perfectly with my coffee from Squibb. :)

After visiting France I can confirm that everything you buy from this place is authentic. Every bite is as if you had bought it in France. The chef is French, and you can tell he is very passionate about everything he makes. A must go if you're looking for quality desserts or you're trying to impress a group you're catering too. French desserts are considered to be the most decadent/savory in the world, and I tend to agree. Wish they would make saint tropez tarts though. It's my favorite dessert in the world. If you ever visit south France then you better go to St. tropez and get the St. Tropez tart "La Tarte de Saint-Tropez" from Micka Påtisserie. It will change your world, I promise.

The rare and humble CANALES pastry

There are windows on the east side of this bakery, where you can watch the delightful French offerings being made from scratch. My wife and I stood transfixed for about 90 minutes (they had to close, or we would probably still be there) as they prepared all the ingredients for the next day's choice of quiche. Didn't see one can, frozen bag, or pre-processed short cut. Every ingredient was a found treasure, put together by a master chef, and prepared as fresh as it comes. Been to Paris, loved it, and always longed to return. Now I don't need to, because Chef Gaby's classic French pastries (and other goodies) are just down the street from me. Wife and I are already making plans for our next visit. Among the many offerings, let me offer praise for one rather rare, ancient, and incredibly delicious pastry, known as the CANALES. Pronounced "KAN-uh-lay." the first time I walked up to Gaby's, I saw them off to the side, and thought it was a mirage. My daughter-chef made them for me once, and I haven't been able to get them off my palate since then. My wife and I once wasted an entire afternoon in Paris trying to find them, but they were always 'out.' And now, here they were, sitting there, humbly, in my hometown of Grand Rapids. For the curious, I would describe a canales as a fluted pastry, about 2 inches tall, that is very dark brown. It has no frosting, sprinkles or accoutrement to make it attractive. It just sits there, waiting to be discovered. You will find the textures to be amazing: crispy/chewy on the outside, with a custard exterior that is beyond creamy. The flavors of vanilla, caramel and rum balance it all out, to take you to a culinary place you haven't been to before. These little beauties take 24 hours to prepare, and require special copper molds. They are the pride of Bordeaux, but fairly unknown elsewhere. Give them a try. After your first bite, you will have two thoughts: "Where is a good cup of coffee? and where can I buy more?" As for me, my first feeling was fear. What if they don't sell? What if chef drops them off the menu for lack of sales? I answered my fear by purchasing 3 of them. "I'll be back."

Cranberry pear and almond cream tart
    Devin C.

I picked up a cranberry pear and almond cream tart from Gabys Gourmandise. Look at how beautiful this thing is! Didn't get a ton of almond flavor because that cranberry puree was TART. Reminiscent of a thanksgiving cranberry dish. The pears on top gave it a nice crunchy texture. The crust was bliss - sweet, crumbly, and delicious. Also shoutout the to server, she was very patient and helpful! I need to come back here to grab some of their cream puffs.

    Cherry clafouti
    Irina G.

This is the first time I've been at the place. The dessert was speaking to me. I literally was salivating by looking at each pastry. This was a pass through location since I live about 1.5 hrs from this place. Dessert was tasty. No complaints there but the prices are extreme for some desserts like cherry clafouti ($14). It also didn't make me happy that cherries were not even pitted for its price. Yes, it was delicious but a bit overpriced.

She was pretty knowledgeable about the cocktail menu and helped me choose one that wasn't too sweet. The medicine man is like a smoked old fashioned in my opinion. It was lovely. Their namesake old fashioned was good too. I chatted with Sara for awhile, long enough to have two drinks- but I also got one to go, because I was headed to an event at the Jw Marriott. I got The Flight of Icarus. This is a rum based cocktail and it is very good. After the event, I went back to the bar and sat for dinner. I had the Bread & Fat, which is their bread service with rotating butter (that night was jalapeño tomato) and it's not free but it's cheap. Good stuff. The bread was thick like Japanese sliced bread. Their mussels appetizer is delicious. The sauce includes some sort of ground up sausage which I believed to be chorizo. It's a good portion. And it comes with a different bread. I used that bread to soak up the sauce! For dinner I had the Campanelle pasta. It was basically a pork ragu. Really good. There was no room for dessert - just another cocktail! The Chat Noir was a nice ending to my evening. I enjoyed chatting with Sara and Isabella at the bar. They kept me company. What a nice evening I had! I'd love to come back and try some of their other dishes. They were out of the prime steak tartare, so I'll get that next time, along with their trout, halibut or half chicken. Yum. Parking is valet or the garage across. The restaurant has bathrooms or you can use hotel bathrooms. It's a large restaurant with nice views of the river. I had a reservation but didn't need one.

I was hoping for a wide variety of fresh fruit, but there was very little to choose from. The pineapple looked old, and the salmon toast appeared to have been sitting out for quite some time. I can't say for certain whether it was kept on ice, but it didn't seem like it. One bright spot was the made-to-order omelets and scrambles, which were fresh and enjoyable. Our server was also very kind and attentive. The Belgian waffle was tasty, and I appreciated the variety of fancy toppings available. Overall, I was disappointed, especially given the high caliber I expect from Margaux Markets. The lack of variety on the buffet--particularly the limited and unappealing fruit selection--was my biggest let down.

I adore crab so ordering that was a no brainer. Their coffee is strong. It took a ton of cream to change the color... though it was delicious with free refills for $5. The omelette was heaven. Service hovered in a way that felt more judgmental than welcoming. On top of that, almost everything was $2 more than the menu price (my tiny side salad listed at $7/14 came to $9), and our bill shows a "seat count" of 10 even though we were seven -- probably why the automatic 18% gratuity hit. We ordered the Hand-Cut Filet for Two and it did not disappoint. The 20oz steak was sliced tableside and cooked perfectly--tender, flavorful, and exactly how a steak should be. We paired it with the red wine steak sauce, which took everything to the next level. For sides, we chose the garlic mashed potatoes (a must) and the glazed Brussels sprouts. Both were incredibly delicious and complemented the steak so well. I also started with an espresso martini, and wow--it was one of the best I've had in a long time. Smooth, well-balanced, and dangerously easy to drink. We were seated in one of their cozy half-circle booths, which made the evening feel intimate and comfortable. Our server was friendly, attentive, and paced the meal perfectly. Between the quality of the food, the drinks, and the overall atmosphere, this was a fantastic dining experience. I'll absolutely be back for another steak dinner--and that espresso martini!
