    Salmon special
    G T.

The only thing French about our meal tonight was that our waiter was inattentive and disinterested in our table and an explanation of the menu I'd expect from a high schooler at Applebees. For ordering $30 and $40 plates the service, ambiance, quality of the food, and supposed French theme were all disappointments. We started with the crab cakes which were fine, nothing special. Our main courses were the special salmon ($40), shrimp scampi ($30), and goat cheese/caramelized onion/fig pizza ($17). The pizza was the best thing we were served and was decent, there is definitely better pizza elsewhere in the area. None of these dishes were French or European. My shrimp scampi was frankly a huge disappointment - it was 4 shrimp on top of very unappealing pasta. I barely could touch it and I'm typically a clean your plate type of person. The shrimp was average but at least edible. I'm a GR local and had never heard of this place. I wanted to try a new nice restaurant on Mother's Day weekend for a treat. I was very disappointed. With a $170 bill I don't expect terrible service, unappealing food at a strip mall restaurant. I don't plan on coming back.

This was the chicken piccata I ordered and it was delicious.

Food was delicious and service was great. I asked my waitress to select a wine that would pair well with my food. She said she conferred with others to make the selection. The wine they selected was good. Ambiance was very nice as well.

An evening to remember. Perfection from start to finish. Reservation for seven. Graciously greeted and promptly served cocktails at the bar as we waited for our party to arrive. Old Fashions and French Martinis battled for the top spot in the Cocktail Olympics. We were seated on schedule and our waiter, Gabriel was engaging and he moved efficiently around the table checking on drinks and sharing specials. Plates of lobsters, scallops, and shrimp appetizers slathered in garlic herb butter filled the table and the smells were intoxicating. Debbie, the manager, stopped by to say hello and assured us we were in good hands. Seven unique entrees were ordered and landed on the table at the same time. As we were finishing our entrees, the owner stopped by and delighted us with his charm and obvious pride in his staff and food and he insisted we try some desserts. He promised we would not be disappointed and he was right. Just when I thought I couldn't eat another bite, the desserts arrived and amazingly, everyone found room! The Euro Bistro team gave us a night we will talk about for a very long time.

I've been looking forward to the opportunity to come to Euro Bistro since my trip to Europe in 2022 and finally got that opportunity a couple days ago. The tone was set upon entering with every table set in a fine dining fashion and the host asking if we had a reservation. I looked around and thought "shoot! I'm underdressed!" I said nope and he sat us anyway. Taking a look at the menu the wines are a fantastic selection of wines from $12 a glass to $75+ per bottle. The interior was a fine dining interior and the menu matched that expectation, $18 starters and mains $19 to $50. My expectations are creme de la creme! Did they meet them? Ambiance clearly set the expectation of a 5 star dining experience so clearly that gains 5 stars. As I looked around I noted the odd choice of felt decor around the lights and something hanging next to me separating one area of the dining room from another. They appeared to be felt as well but now I'm unsure as the shear amount of dust clinging to it made it look fuzzy. It could honestly be wood. I'm not sure but, gross. Cleanliness gets 3 of 5 stars. Food freshness and quality. We ordered a cheese plate to start which in Europe is a dessert by the way. The fruit was a selection of red and green grapes and strawberries on a bed of arugula. Clearly the $18 cost was put into the cheeses. There were 4 cheeses, a garlic and herb goat cheese, Brie, pecorino Romano, and what I believe was Gouda. Frankly I'm not sure Romano had any place on a fruit and cheese dish. It belongs on my risotto. It was all drizzled with a balsamic glaze which was nice and the Brie was drizzled with honey. For dinner I ordered the charred asparagus risotto and my daughter ordered wood fired Mac and cheese. We both had to add a grilled chicken breast as neither dish came with a protein. The risotto was mush! When she first set it down my brain said "mashed potatoes." The flavor was there though which made it impossible to send back along with my problems wasting food when we have so many starving in our world. But anyone else who knows what to expect of risotto would have sent it back. I expect to see each grain and for it to have a slight bite like an aldente pasta. It was mush. Like oatmeal and I'm not sure where the charred asparagus was. There was asparagus just not charred. The left over goat cheese made a fantastic addition to my left over risotto. We finished with a slice of truffle pie for me and a chocolate peanut butter pie for my daughter, both very good the best part of the meal. In Europe, these would have been served with espresso. I miss that. All in all food freshness gains 5 stars but quality gains only 2. If I'm paying $110 for a meal I expect it to be executed to perfection. Service was very good overall but definitely not fine dining excellence. Again if I'm paying $130 for a meal after tip then I expect the dishes to be cleared from the table at some point. They never were. We had to work around dishes from every course. I also expect the server in such a place would box my leftovers for me. That would have gotten her an excellent rating instead of good and would have increased her tip from $20 to nearly $30. Service gains 3 stars because it's not likely her fault but the fault of her training. This gives an overall score of 3.6 stars. In this case I'm taking this to a 3 as the room for improvement is too great to warrant 4 stars. The potential here is insane but fell short.

Perch Meuniere and spinach - gorgeous and stellar! Lovely butter sauce.

Welcoming vibes. Wait staff remembered us from 6 months earlier. Dinning room very pleasant. I had a simple green salad with goat cheese; the goat cheese was stellar and greens excellent. Husband had tomato feta cucumber salad: very fresh and excellent. He had shrimp scampi that he greatly enjoyed (it had too many noodles for me). I had the perch meunière ... that was spectacular; I will be hard pressed not to order again. And the spinach was perfect. Certainly 5 stars on the food. Our wait person was helpful always and there when we needed without intrusion.

It's our last night in Grand Rapids, looking for one last culinary adventure. Tonight it's Euro Bistro, a deceptively large place at one end of a strip mall. It's packed at 6:30 pm so we take advantage of the parking lot behind. Of all the places we've seen, this has the most appropriately well-dressed patrons (except for me, coming as I am from an apple orchard). Everyone is loud and boisterous; the sound of locals having a very good time. The baguette (piping hot) & butter (very satisfyingly cold) was a great pair; everyone agreed the baguette was a tasty piece of work. The entrees (appetizers) began with the bisque de homard (lobster bisque), the soup du jour: a mild flavor, safe for all, not assertively marine. Others liked the bits of lobster meat. Next up was soupe à l'oignon gratinée (onion soup with cheese), the first dish that I prepared from scratch for others. Rather than the expected baked shell of cheese covering the entire bowl, this had a floating island of bread with a bit of cheese atop. The onion was nicely cooked down but had an unexpected acidic finish, as though some vinegar had been added too late. Moving into the plats principaux (main courses) with the boeuf bourguignon, which was well-received. The meat was very tender, soft enough to break apart with a fork. It was more BBQ-y than I anticipated but somehow appropriate to an area with great brisket burnt ends. Liked by all in our party. The coq au vin (rooster with wine), that staple of my mom's (learned during her time at La Sorbonne), was also fork-tender and tasty, albeit with less cooked-down red wine taste and somehow sweeter, a bit distractingly so. The risotto aux asperges grillées (charred asparagus risotto) was spot-on, with nicely-cooked Arborio and tender, tasty bits of asparagus. Mild, soothing, and a good counterpart to the more assertive meat dishes. For the cours de desserts we went with the gâteau au chocolat sans farine (flourless chocolate cake), a dish with very few ingredients that's often an unintentional test of the baker's skill. This was the star of the meal, an absolutely perfect rendition. Served very cold, it was a rewardingly dense dark chocolate slab of joy that produced just the right calming close to an evening spent out. Paired with the gratifyingly hot, strong coffee, this was the right note on which to end our evenings in Grand Rapids with a fond memory. Date night? Celebration night? You might consider coming over to the Euro Bistro.

We stopped in here tonight for my husband's birthday - even with no reservations we were able to be seated quickly at 6:30 on a Friday night! Our waitress was attentive and helpful, offering to have the bartender whip up a non-alcoholic cocktail for me. I didn't love it but I appreciated the effort! My salad however was amazing, simple green with fried Brie and a light vinaigrette. My husband loved his French onion soup! For an entree I had the coq Au vin and it was incredible - falling apart tender, flavorful, and I even found myself soaking up the sauce with pieces of bread it was that good. Ambiance is ok, there were tvs playing golf which I could have done without but overall we had a lovely experience and will definitely be back!

During our time in Michigan, we met up with family at Euro Bistro to have lunch together. Without a reservation, we were able to get a table for 6 without a problem and were seated in the front dining room. The room was a bit chilly and our waitress was kind enough to turn the thermostat up a couple degrees for us. The lunch menu had a decent amount of options; salads, soups, sandwiches, and pizza. I had the "veggie pita" without the cheese and it was a large portion & with a good variety of veggies. My only complaint was that the veggies were a little too oily. The sandwich was served with a small side/garnish of cantaloupe. Everyone at our table seemed to enjoy their meal - especially the fries that my FIL ordered and was generous enough to share. Our waitress said she had worked at the Euro Bistro for 10 years! She was friendly and patient with our group as we took a bit to decide on our orders. The inside is decorated very nicely and they have a great bar area as well!

She was pretty knowledgeable about the cocktail menu and helped me choose one that wasn't too sweet. The medicine man is like a smoked old fashioned in my opinion. It was lovely. Their namesake old fashioned was good too. I chatted with Sara for awhile, long enough to have two drinks- but I also got one to go, because I was headed to an event at the Jw Marriott. I got The Flight of Icarus. This is a rum based cocktail and it is very good. After the event, I went back to the bar and sat for dinner. I had the Bread & Fat, which is their bread service with rotating butter (that night was jalapeño tomato) and it's not free but it's cheap. Good stuff. The bread was thick like Japanese sliced bread. Their mussels appetizer is delicious. The sauce includes some sort of ground up sausage which I believed to be chorizo. It's a good portion. And it comes with a different bread. I used that bread to soak up the sauce! For dinner I had the Campanelle pasta. It was basically a pork ragu. Really good. There was no room for dessert - just another cocktail! The Chat Noir was a nice ending to my evening. I enjoyed chatting with Sara and Isabella at the bar. They kept me company. What a nice evening I had! I'd love to come back and try some of their other dishes. They were out of the prime steak tartare, so I'll get that next time, along with their trout, halibut or half chicken. Yum. Parking is valet or the garage across. The restaurant has bathrooms or you can use hotel bathrooms. It's a large restaurant with nice views of the river. I had a reservation but didn't need one.

I was hoping for a wide variety of fresh fruit, but there was very little to choose from. The pineapple looked old, and the salmon toast appeared to have been sitting out for quite some time. I can't say for certain whether it was kept on ice, but it didn't seem like it. One bright spot was the made-to-order omelets and scrambles, which were fresh and enjoyable. Our server was also very kind and attentive. The Belgian waffle was tasty, and I appreciated the variety of fancy toppings available. Overall, I was disappointed, especially given the high caliber I expect from Margaux Markets. The lack of variety on the buffet--particularly the limited and unappealing fruit selection--was my biggest let down.
