This place creeped me out like a scene from a horror flick. I was driving on 10 West and the dogs needed a break. Out of no where I see a sign that just says rest area. I pull off expecting the parking area to be close by like all of the others. No, it's a long winding road that makes you feel like you are going in circles and getting lost. Then you arrive at the lower level where the big rigs park. I should have read Dave O's review before I parked down there. The dogs were desperate for a walk so we jumped out of the car. Thankfully I always lock my car. Thankfully it was day light too. Once up the hill, there are plenty of restrooms and picnic tables under pavilions. The grounds are well cared for and I enjoyed talking pictures of the trees. When I was leaving, a man in a black T-shirt and jeans came up on me out of no where. He asked for gas money to get to Houston, TX. He told me that he lost his apartment and was sleeping in his car with his dog. He was headed to his aunts but needed gas. I told him that I was traveling cashless and the only thing I could offer was for him to follow me to a gas station. He didn't take me up on the offer. After that I quickly put the window back up and took off. I stopped at the upper level to throw trash out and my intuition kept saying get out of there. This is not a rest area for those in a big hurry. It's a two way rest stop that serves both eastbound and westbound traffic. You could use it to turn around and go back the way you came if you wanted to. Because of this, it's a bit of a drive to get to it after you exit the interstate but others exaggerate how far. This rest area is meant to be enjoyed. Go past the facilities around the loop to the highest point, park and walk up past the picnic shelter for a view down to the Apalachicola River and off into the distance. There was more to see when it was first built and the trees hadn't grown up to block the view. There was a new opportunity after Hurricane Michael came through but that is now growing back to hide the scars and some of the view. After the leaves fall is probably the best time to get the view these days. The facilities are kept clean and there is lots of parking. If you want a good walk then park down with the large truck parking area and walk up. Otherwise, go past that parking area and loop around to parking closer to the facilities. There are a bunch of sheltered picnic tables on around the loop. When you leave it is clearly marked which way to go to continue east or west. It will be a bit of a drive back to the interstate but you will be refreshed and ready to drive some more. read more

It feels weird to be writing a review about a rest stop. But I really enjoyed my short stay at this one. I pulled in here when I was driving through Florida recently. It is so spacious and full of pretty trees. The grassy areas were so nice to sit and relax on. The bathrooms and picnic tables were very clean and the vending machines actually worked (and they take credit card). Our rest stops in AZ are garbage. This one was impressive and what rest areas should look like. There is one downer about this place. If you are trying to access this rest stop going west on the I-10... Good Luck! It takes forever to get to it because it is on the other side of the highway. The exit ramp has so many turns and curves that you almost need another rest stop to get to this rest stop. read more

Rest areas are supposed to creative convenient and fast exit both of the highway. This one defies that fundamental rule. It would literally be easier to get off an exit and stop at a gas station. I would guess this is at least a mile off the main highway. It would be one thing if there was something stunning about this area, but to me it appears just like any other rest area. read more

The legend of the Gadsden Rest Area outside Chattahoochee, FL may be fictitious or it may be true, as for me I only stop here during daylight hours. Located in the remote piney woods in the panhandle of Florida this beautiful comfort station offers a lot of amenities including large clean restrooms, vending machines and lots of covered picnic pavilions that are scattered across this large tract of land. Many question the reason this rest area is located so far from I-10 hidden in the deep woods not far from the swamps that reside along the Chattahoochee, others dismiss the tales as myths and folklore. If you choose to pull off the road after sunset do not park below and always lock your doors when exiting your vehicle before taking the long walk past the numerous concrete structures on your way to the facilities. This is the mist unique Interstate rest stop in the state of FL. When traveling west you have to exit and cross over both sides of I-10 as there is one stop that serves travelers for either direction. You travel over a winding road, climbing a FL "mountain" to the top. From the top you can get a good view in many directions. It gives you the feeling you are in a California park forest as it sure doesn't look like the FL that I know. The stop is near the Apalachicola River. read more

Why 5 Stars? This is arguably the best Rest Area in Florida. It's like an adventure ride finally getting to the parking lot, but once you are there...oh yes! Relief! Going West on I-10 in the panhandle of Florida, is something out of a movie... You're sitting there driving and realize that the 2 coffees, large sweet tea, and a couple red bulls are finally causing you to need a rest area and quick! Ohhhh, but guess what? You are in Chattahoochee! And, like the name, the off ramp into this rest area is LONG. Not just a few semi truck lengths long, but long enough to make you contemplate just pulling off onto the side and finding a tree. But YOU keep driving on because the family is in the minivan and you wouldn't want to embarrass them today! Once you get to the end, it is like seeing an oasis in the middle of the desert, you start to hear angelic music playing as you finally have hit the parking lot. Instead of reading previous reviews as I pull into the rest area, I opted to park in the "lower" parking lot. Wow...and pretty much at this point I had to loosen my belt just to be able to stand up without it getting super uncomfortable. As I attempted to climb the stairs up to the other parking lot, I still see that the bathrooms are about 300 yards ahead. Doing the bathroom shuffle walk, I finally make it and I was so glad I did. Plenty of bathrooms, stalls and sinks. Everything is super clean as well. Even the 'Family' restroom was nice when we had to also do a little diaper change. Once Business is taken care of, it is really nice to just walk around the park-like setting here and relax for a while, maybe if I would have planned correctly this would have been a great spot for a picnic. But off we go, back on our journey and after the 2-3 mile drive back to the highway I am left relieved and well rested. THANK YOU GADSEN COUNTY REST AREA!!! read more

Great place to stretch your legs and trick yourself for a few minutes into thinking you don't have another 400 miles to go. The restrooms (probably the only time both meanings of that term are true) are cleaner than most McDonald's but are no Bucky's. It basically makes me wish we could have brought lunch to eat here instead of a dull fast food stop. The conifer forestry is my kind of backdrop. I could stroll here all day... but, the road's a callin'. If the signage gave a clearer picture of the nature of the winding, overpass stop, it'd have got a 5 star. Felt a bit like the absense of such info was deciding for you if it was worth the stop or not. read more

It's your typical rest area with awesome hills, trees and view. Trees mostly shield your normal view of I10. Definitely an awesome place to stretch your legs and take a break. It's probably my favorite rest area in Florida (I've been to most). read more

I can't believe I'm writing a review for a rest area. I have done so before, but those were for state line welcome centers along the highway or rest areas featuring vista points. This rest area, the Gadsden County Rest Area along I-10 in the Floridian Panhandle, does not fit that criteria. It's just a rest area. I found this rest area the first time I drove cross country along I-10. I thought it would be just another rest area. It wasn't. The thing about the Gadsden County Rest Area is that, rather than featuring a rest area fronting each side of the freeway, there are these insanely long ramps that route you to the south side of the freeway. In getting to this consolidated rest area, you endure curves, forests, and interesting changes in topography. Getting to the actual rest area parking lot is therefore an adventure! The rest area is very '70s looking, but it is a large facility, with lots of parking, dated but tidy brick buildings, large restrooms, vending machines, kiosks with information, and MANY picnic tables. There is also a security guard on hand, as is typical in Florida along the interstates. I'm sure they know how to read people quickly, seeing so many people pull off the Christopher Columbus Transcontinental Highway (Interstate 10), which runs from Santa Monica, CA to Jacksonville, FL. That said, I'm sure they probably enjoy brief chats with tourists who want to find out about the area and who want to take a break to stretch their legs and avoid road fatigue, not to mention relieve themselves. In terms of the latter, the restrooms are very clean. So, if crossing Florida on I-10, save buying that candy bar, looking at the information kiosk, relieving yourself, or stretching your legs until mile marker 162. The Gadsden County Rest Area feels like a mini state park more so than a run of the mill rest area. read more

You pull off the road thinking this is going to be right there, but the road keeps going.. Keeps going.. and finally the rest area is there. It's a rest area that's out of the way, in a wooded area surrounded by trees. with a lot of dog walk places. Lots of benches to sit and rest if that's what you choose to do. The bathrooms were clean and spacious, though I did get nearly the fright of my life when I walked in and saw a woman who resembled Samira from the RING (A Horror Movie) charging her phone off one of the only available sockets. After a quick walk around, and a cup of coffee, I got back on the road. read more

You may start reading everyone elses' reviews and think, "Surely they're exaggerating!" No, no they're not. No lie or hyperbole, if you are heading west on I-10, you'll seriously think that maybe you've been punked and that you are on an Easter egg hunt that has no Easter eggs. The actual rest area is...miles? away from the exit. I don't know how far it really is, but you'll start wondering after the first little bit, and you'll speed up because you wouldn't be hitting an exit for a rest stop if you didn't need to pee or whatever. Keep going and you'll get there eventually. And don't stop when you get there. When you realize that you're there, you are on the lower level and the hike to the bathrooms is lengthy. As in "Pack a lunch, hope for the best, plan for the worst". To hell with that. Keep driving and hang the first left, which will take you to the upper level, which is reasonably close to the facilities. And, the facilities: Swear to Zeus, I've been to concert venues that had smaller bathrooms. There are sh*tloads of stalls, innumerable (I can count, but I didn't count them. But I could have...I promise!) urinals, and many sinks. If you ever roll up in here and can't find a place to pee or poop, flee into the abundance of woods, because some apocalyptic sh*t is happening and you should become scarce. There's like an amphitheater that could host a Kenny Chesney concert to the west of the bathrooms. I have no idea why this thing is here. I don't want to linger any longer than absolutely necessary, but apparently, the Oracles that designed this place foresaw things that haven't manifested yet. Yet. Who knows what this excess of space will witness? A blind person runs this rest stop, according to the sign that I saw. I left my phone in my rental, or I'd provide photographic proof. But I swear that it is true. That is one industrious blind folk, because this joint is spotless. I wouldn't eat a waffle dropped on the floor, but it looked damned clean. So, props to the blind peep. You need a map to find your way back onto I-10 west. Bread crumbs won't help, because this is like a side trip to Aruba. You drive around a while, squint at some signs, and speculate about WTF they were thinking when they (whoever it was) did this. It makes no sense whatsoever. But it works. This is a really nice rest area, with extra clown car. Stop in just to experience the absurdity for yourself. read more

We've been all over the country and stopped at many rest stops and this is by far the most enjoyable and memorable. The westbound exit from I-10 was beautiful and curvy. It was so nice to have a rest stop that is back off the highway a bit, quiet, spacious, beautiful trees and surrounded by nature. Honestly, this place looks like a park and it's patrolled by armed guards at night which is great for security. Huge bathrooms, lots of stalls, there are shelves in each stall which is nice to have a place to set your stuff if your changing or even just a place to set your phone. Lots of shaded picnic tables and vending machine options - also first time I've seen a windshield washing station at a rest stop. Wish more rest stops were like this, I don't mind the extra five minutes it takes to have a rest stop that isn't blasted by highway traffic noise and lights. I would car camp here in a heart beat, so peaceful with access to a decent amount of amenities for a rest stop. read more

This exit for this place has to be the longest exit ramps I have ever seen. When exiting here you get a nice 20 minute (JK) scenic drive through the woods. Then when you finally arrive to the rest area you find that you are forced to march up a mountain to the restrooms. Ok so enough with the complaining - the walk was an nice break from driving. Just glad it was not raining otherwise I would need a change of clothes when I got back to the car. The restrooms were clean and vending machines took credit cards. So take a nice drive through the woods and drop in for a pee break and a drink. read more

We stopped here after dark one night while driving through. Like other reviewers have said, this rest area is not right next to the highway like other rest areas. At night, it felt a little disorienting going from the high way and having to drive through a forest to get to the rest area but it wasn't a super long drive. The rest area is very big with 2 "levels" of parking due to the small hill that the rest area is built on. There is a security guard on duty which is nice to know especially when here at night. There is a good amount of light but it's nice to know that there is someone there watching over things. The bathrooms are clean for the most part. I think this would be a great spot to stop during the day because there are picnic tables and the area is large enough for kids to run around to run off some energy. read more
