I pull off expecting the parking area to be close by like all of the others. No, it's a long winding road that makes you feel like you are going in circles and getting lost. Then you arrive at the lower level where the big rigs park. I should have read Dave O's review before I parked down there. The dogs were desperate for a walk so we jumped out of the car. Thankfully I always lock my car. Thankfully it was day light too. Once up the hill, there are plenty of restrooms and picnic tables under pavilions. The grounds are well cared for and I enjoyed talking pictures of the trees. When I was leaving, a man in a black T-shirt and jeans came up on me out of no where. He asked for gas money to get to Houston, TX. He told me that he lost his apartment and was sleeping in his car with his dog. He was headed to his aunts but needed gas. I told him that I was traveling cashless and the only thing I could offer was for him to follow me to a gas station. He didn't take me up on the offer. After that I quickly put the window back up and took off. I stopped at the upper level to throw trash out and my intuition kept saying get out of there. I stopped what I was doing and took off.

This is not a rest area for those in a big hurry. It's a two way rest stop that serves both…read moreeastbound and westbound traffic. You could use it to turn around and go back the way you came if you wanted to. Because of this, it's a bit of a drive to get to it after you exit the interstate but others exaggerate how far. This rest area is meant to be enjoyed. Go past the facilities around the loop to the highest point, park and walk up past the picnic shelter for a view down to the Apalachicola River and off into the distance. There was more to see when it was first built and the trees hadn't grown up to block the view. There was a new opportunity after Hurricane Michael came through but that is now growing back to hide the scars and some of the view. After the leaves fall is probably the best time to get the view these days. The facilities are kept clean and there is lots of parking. If you want a good walk then park down with the large truck parking area and walk up. Otherwise, go past that parking area and loop around to parking closer to the facilities. There are a bunch of sheltered picnic tables on around the loop. When you leave it is clearly marked which way to go to continue east or west. It will be a bit of a drive back to the interstate but you will be refreshed and ready to drive some more.

As other have stated this is probably best for short stays and overnight stops as you travel through the area. Located a short drive from the interstate this park is easy to find and easy to access, our pull through site was #44 and although gravel it was pretty level and well maintained with full hookups and reliable utilities. We had no issue during our stay and found the park to be quite. We fortunately had great neighbors which is always good, the sites could of been a little wider but they were better than most short stay parks and we had plenty of room for our 4 slide-outs and awning which is typical for RV Parks that have customers who mainly stay only overnight. We didn't use any of the park's amenities but it did appear they were more than adequate including the pool. The staff was out and about everyday cleaning and maintaining the property which is filled with flowering plants and lots of pine trees that provides a good balance of sun and shade. As experienced RVers we are used to navigating our stays without much interaction with the staff so besides a few phone discussions and online communications we never had any face to face interaction with the staff which is fine with us - the site assignments and park information is posted in a small kiosk across from the office. I personally thought everything went off without a hitch and would definitely return if we were in the area and needed a place for an overnight stay...

We brought the kids here for a bit of history and thought we might spend an hour. More than two…read morehours later, our kids were still interested and engaged. There was a lot to see and do and a lot to learn. I think it's perfect for a really interested four year old and anyone older. The Friar was everyone's favorite part. He played his part well, was great with the kids, and had so much information to share. He talked about what every day life was like, taught them about different herbs and traditional medicine, gave them a history of the property, and showed them the garden and his favorite tree. The two women in the Spanish house are the only thing that made me consider a four star rating. They were not good with children, and acted like our presence was an interruption to their sitting around and talking with each other. When we walked in one of them disciplined my six year old for not knocking on their door - not in a friendly or joking way - as if he had done something wrong for continuing a tour we paid to take. The interaction only went downhill from there, and although it doesn't seem fair to lower the rating when everyone else was so wonderful, I hope they will work to find people who are good with children in the future.

All the early settlers such as the Spanish, English, French and Dutch had "marital" relationships with the Indigenous Americans even if they were not per say married. It was a rare occurrence for all European colonies to have an actual marriage between a European and a Native American. Regardless, there are many Americans that claim and prove to have Native American Ancestry, shown through DNA testing. Where I roll my eyes a little is that most claim to be related to Pocahontas and Geranamo. Because this is a Spanish mission, in some placards they emphasize that some Spanish men "intermarried" with the indigenous women and that the indigenous peoples found that to be a bettering of themselves. Of course, this is all speculation. In Cuban History, you learn that there was a complete genocide of the Indigenous peoples. It is well documented. Many of the indigenous preferred to throw themselves off the cliffs than to fall on the Spanish sword. Hatuey, who fought Spanish colonizers, famously said, "Then I do not want to go where they are. I would rather go to hell so as not to be where they are and where I would not see such cruel people." This is why there are no indigenous peoples in Cuba. Some of the Spanish conquistadors were even eaten by the indigenous. But this place would have you believe things were hunky dory between the Spanish and the indigenous. The Spanish were very Catholic and very strict with the social class or social caste system and would not "marry" the indigenous women they took. Even the historical actor said that the ledgers were all burnt and there isn't any historical legal evidence of their marriage unions. There is a lot of speculation about the past and not too much fact.

Two nights here at a great location not far from the State Capitol. I was in a room at the back of…read morethe hotel, so I did not have any of the street noise of the restaurants and clubs. So there's that. Still, only a three star visit. I was starting to unpack my stuff when I opened a drawer. A previous guest had left something in one of the drawers. I opted not to make a thing about it because what are they going to do? It set off my concerns about cleanliness for the remainder of my stay. Not that there was anything else, but now I'm concerned. I closed the drawer and ignored it the remainder of my stay. The room was otherwise good. The air conditioner had a loud hum to it. Enough that I left it set to 75 degrees at night so that it wouldn't wake me up when it kicked in. My room did not have a slow-close spring. I don't know if others do or don't, but I did not hear slamming doors or other hallway/neighbor noise. There were no exposed power outlets. I get that this is a more classic design hotel but I had to reach down to unplug the lamp to have a place to charge my phone at the bedside. At the desk, I had to unplug the Keurig to have a place to plug in my laptop. Not great. The bathroom was roomy and the vanity area had enough space to spread out. However, the shower had no handle or grip. That's not right. Parking in downtown is not free. On the weekend, the meters are free. The hotel did not have a parking valet (COVID) and currently offers their limited spaces out front on a first-come basis. I found space within a block of the hotel each time I needed it. Big mistake. I'll just refer readers to my review on Wyndham's page for details on that experience. The Governor's Inn was a welcomed surprise. It is chock full of charm and class! From the courteous gentleman valeting vehicles out front to the classic, no-frills continental breakfast in the morning, this hotel offered me exactly what I needed the night before a big interview. I was only in town for one night, and I really needed to be close to the building in which I was interviewing the next morning. The location is extremely central to all things "downtown" and I really loved the fact that I could walk to Harry's and other local restaurants. The rate was very reasonable and the accommodations, while small, were not much smaller than one you would find in a standard NYC hotel. I could not figure out if the volume on the TV was broken or if they control it so that it does not become loud enough to disturb nearby hotel guests. Either way, I was able to enjoy the NBA playoff game for a little while, which was perfect since I was not there for entertainment. My favorite aspect of my stay was being assigned to my favorite governor's room - Bob Graham! I love the history that accompanies the Governor's Inn and I would definitely stay there again, if in need of a hotel in the Tallahassee area.

So during the day it's not always quiet, but the night I was there was quiet. I would recommend running the water first because it hadn't been run in a while and I had black stuff coming out of my faucet. There was also a wasp nest in the power box so I had to take care of that. Also, the fire pit was filled with about a 3 inch layer of ash that I cleaned out before I made my first fire. There's a guy's phone number on the kiosk that you can call for firewood. He's not affiliated with the park but will bring a bundle for seven dollars plus a delivery fee. There isn't a dedicated hose for black water tank flushing, so I hooked up my own (luckily brand new) hose to the potable water faucet. It would be much better and recommended to have a separate spigot for black water flush hoses. The sunset was beautiful and it seems the fishing is good although I didn't fish. The site had a picnic table, and the firepit has a grate for cooking albeit rusty. I had my grilling supplies and got some of the flakes off. The bathrooms were also big and clean. There is no camp host here FYI. Just pull in and park.
