And, they are spending their weekends and evenings making sure the animals get spayed, neutered and adopted. Our puppy is a joy, and, as far as the adoption process, they made it as easy as possible. They scanned us and the pup very thoroughly to ensure a good match and gave us time to make sure we both matched. They are saving lives, and we were so happy to find them and add our pup to our family.

Years ago I had put in an application with Safe Harbor, and my application was approved to meet dogs. I ended up finding my dog at a local shelter before finding one through Safe Harbor. However, I have continued to receive their monthly email, and have always considered them when thinking about adopting. At the time when I was looking, the people who volunteered for Safe Harbor were friendly, warm, engaging people. Unfortunately, this has changed, and Safe Harbor has also now changed my perspectives on rescues at this point. After moving to Utah a few years ago, I have become familiar with shelters and rescues here. Last week, my dog and I had arranged a meet and greet with a dog in a shelter twice. They played together in the yard at the shelter, and we took them both on a walk at the park next to the shelter. I went home to think about adopting him, and when I returned to the shelter's webpage, he was gone. Safe Harbor pulled him from the shelter. I contacted Safe Harbor, and let them know my dog and I had met this dog several times and asked if he was available. I filled out their application. When I finally received a response, it was very rude, stating that yellow labs are popular and they have several people that have wanted one that are already approved adopters. So Safe Harbor takes dogs from no-kill shelters to fulfill someone's wish? In addition, they did not even offer to help me look for another dog within their organization. I contacted Safe Harbor multiple times and they refused to respond. I had no idea that Safe Harbor is more of a dog matching agency, and is not in rescue for the right reasons. Taking dogs from a no-kill shelter where a dog will be adopted is very different than what a true rescue does. Safe Harbor may want to rethink their mission statement. "To rescue, provide a high level of compassionate care and successfully rehome stray, abandoned or surrendered Labrador Retrievers giving priority to those in Colorado."

The Lab is the most popular breed of dog in the country - so it seems odd that there are so many that are unwanted or abandoned. I happened to be on Facebook one afternoon after having a suddenly clear schedule, and boom! This ADORABLE little face popped up in my feed. I felt like the Grinch, my heart swelling up to three times its normal size. I wanted, no, NEEDED this puppy. I don't know what I was thinking. I had a senior cat, 2 other dogs, was recovering from a severe injury, and was also a full time graduate student in Boulder. Yeah. But that FACE. It spoke to me. After discussing it with my husband, we decided it would be worth making the effort to add to our family. We contacted MFDM, and put in our application. Sadly, the little face we fell in love with went to a family that same day. We were CRUSHED. Lets recap: Thursday - no interest in getting a new dog. Friday - fall in love with dog. Saturday - learn dog is not available. Be sad. Sad sad sad. Sunday morning, we were still sad....and then my phone rang. It was the Fairy Dawg Mother herself!!! She was calling to let me know that the little face I fell in love with was being returned to his foster home, because he wasn't a fit for the family that wanted him originally. My husband and I were OVERJOYED. This wasn't a simple "ok, lets go see him" - we KNEW he was meant to be ours. We drove to the foster's home that afternoon, and welcomed our new handsome boy into our lives. Now - it's easy enough to say that it's a great story to meet the dog we love. But even better, here is what made it worth adopting from MFDM: 1. The focus is on finding the RIGHT home for the dog. When my boy's potential parents decided he wasn't the right fit, MFDM took him back ASAP. 2. Foster care, not shelter care. The dogs brought under the MFDM umbrella are immediately cared for in homes, given training, and integration into a pack. This is good, because that means they don't suffer any more. Many of the dogs are rescued from high stress/high kill shelters. It's a lot of work to go from that environment to a house/family setting. 3. The rescue is small and personalized. No large corporate style structure here, where checkboxes and numbers are the primary motivation. They are all about the dogs. 4. Small, but professional. Each dog is microchipped, vaccinated, and spayed/neutered, and all pet parents are advised about responsible pet ownership. When you adopt from MFDM, you become a part of their family, whether you want to or not! They are here for the dogs, first and foremost. The adoption process was simple, straightforward, and incredibly informative, which made everything feel comfortable and well-supported from the start. From the moment you arrive, you can immediately sense how deeply these animals are loved and cared for. The facility is spotless, well-organized, and thoughtfully maintained. Every donkey there appears healthy, happy, and clearly cherished. What has meant the most to me, though, is the ongoing support I've received since welcoming the girls to their new home. Whenever I have questions, I feel completely comfortable reaching out for help and advice. Kathy E. Dean, President of this donkey rescue doesn't actually adopt donkeys out to well…read morequalified, loving homes. After doing some research in my community, I learned that very often for unfounded and unsubstantiated reasons Kathy will "close a matter" as she puts it and not allow an adoption to take place. Sadly, I heard a story where a long time volunteer wasn't even allowed to adopt one of these donkeys. One woman I spoke to said, she is aware of over 10 instances were Kathy has done something very similar to potential adopters. This is a very cruel pattern. She truly is doing a disservice to these animals. Her priority is NOT finding these animals loving homes where they are the center of love and attention. Kathy lead me to believe my adoptin was going through. Although I confirmed with my farrier and veterinarian that she never reached out to either one of them for reference. For weeks I was led to believe that this donkey was coming to live at my ranch, I should've known better when she didn't reach out to my references. It's a very unfortunate situation for those who find themselves emotionally invested in their potential adoptee only to have the rug jerked out from under them. If you want to go and see the donkeys or donate be my guest. The donkeys are well cared for, so it appears. The volunteers seem very capable and caring. I had a few questions about the contract and payment method which prompted her to say this "matter is closed". I guess it could have been a worse situation as described to me by other people who have dealt with Kathy. In short I'm not getting my donkey for whatever frivolous and prejudice reason she came up with. I spent 20 years in broadcasting as a TV journalist in major markets and have worked with countless rescues and animal shelters, never have I had an experience that was so disheartening and unprofessional as this one. I would say approach this place with the upmost caution if you are looking to adopt a donkey. Kathy will play with your emotions, tug at your heart strings and prevent you from adopting your chosen animal.

Not only are they a caring and loving breeder of Australian Labradoodles, multi-generation, but they are caring people who put high priority on who they place one of their precious little puppies with for a forever home. Linda and Sonny provided us with pictures and videos of our precious little Willy from the time our deposit was placed and of course this made our heart enlarge with love for him. We brought him home January 4, 2016 and needless to say our lives, while a little hectic with a new puppy have been enriched. I have thanked God over and over for finding Agape Labradoodles.
