The store had the size toggles and cord that I needed for my coat, and the sales clerk knew exactly what I needed, even though I didn't know the correct term "toggles". She even described the best way to sew the toggles on my coat and how far from the coat edge to position everything. read more

For years I have shopped at Gaffney Fabrics. The selections and buys are fantastic. I have so much of their fabric in my studio that I haven't been in the store for quite awhile. I highly recommend this store. This was another of the fabric store day trip I took with my sewing friends. There is only street parking. You will need to parallel park and pay. It is $1 for one hour. It is a very lovely store with a friendly staff. Prices are good. You will find a small selection of African fabric. There are lots of prints. There's a good selection of wovens and knits. The store is small but we were happy to support a small business. The owner kindly let us browse the basement which was being used as storage during the pandemic. I'm glad she did because I found a knit batik remnant which would be great for a tee. read more

I understand that precautions must be made, but considering that I just left the fabric district and waited no longer than 5 minutes, waiting outside for that amount of time is ridiculous. The assortment of fabrics in this store was AMAZING!!! Different weights and types were available. Varied notions were available too. Loads of graphic prints and authentic African prints. Lots to choose from in the clearance sections. Debbie was the person who helped me. She was great! There's street parking available, but it's not free. Make sure to look for the machine parking meters on the street. The closest one to the store is in the middle of the block, not immediately in front of the store. I attempted an online order as I am out of state, but there were a few issues, so called in for assistance and I have to say that the great customer service I got from staffers was refreshing. What was even better was when I placed my order over the phone due to website gremlins with Kate. She was so relatable during our contacts and I honestly felt like I was speaking with a cousin or very dear and special friend. If I lived near the store, I'd be in there at least once a week. Gaffney is the ONLY place I have found with African prints that are: A) 100% cotton B) Quite affordable C) Varied in selection of prints I've been looking for African prints for several months to make quilts for the Holiday Season. I came upon Gaffney by chance on a larger search one day and my jaw dropped! Kate had every fabric choice for African prints and all but one for the cotton fabrics I had made via online photos. This is my go-to-fabric store. If you want to compare prices to places like 4th st down fabric row, Gaffney's prices will be lower. If you want to compare prices to places like JoAnne's Gaffney's prices are lower. They have a variety of fabrics and prints, ITY's Linen's, notions, Quiannas, jersey material, sequins, bottons, trims, ribbons etc. Whatever you need for your next sewing project Gaffney's has it. They try to stay up on seasons and trends as well. Also, they have a downstairs. OKay, so lets talk about customer service, Today Ms. KAte checked on me a few times because she saw me waiting in line while the Employee that works in the back section against the wall did not have a customer and did not offer for me to come over to her station. I did not know if the other worker was open or not and I didn't want to come to her station if she was closed. Anyhow, I ended up checking out with Ms.Elsee (Elcee or LC) I'm not sure how to spell her name but she was a doll. She was very friendly to the customer that was ahead of me as well as myself. Ms. Elsee noticed a cut on my-print that came from the factory and she was attentive and made sure that I didnot recieve the fabric that had the whole in it from the factory. I mentioned to Ms. Elsee that I didn't want to get a ticket because I didn't plan on being in the store that long and she told me to go to the main counter and get a quarter for the meter. I had my own quarter in my pocket, so I didn't need to ask for a quarter but it was nice of her to let me know that they would of given me a coin for the meter to prevent me from getting a parking ticket. Beginner sewer? Need sewing essentials? Want cheap prices? This is your spot! Love this little gem and they have a lot of little things you may need for any sewing project. The fabric is nothing special in terms of the selection but not bad for sewing something simple. This is a old school spot, with an old school smell and old school attitudes! Staff (everyone) missed the memo or class given on what good customer service means to a business success/growth but what do I know, their still in business right? Nonetheless, get your ish and go! I was excited to finally try the fabric store I always pass since moving to the neighborhood. I have a huge bag of expensive clothing I need altered and decided drop off some sheer curtains I needed hemmed before going on to do more expensive business. I looked up at a sign that said "if you need something hemmed or altered please inquire here." There was a woman, Ms. Mangum, behind the counter and I asked if I could get something hemmed. She started asking by what date I needed it and then proceeded to scold me because I didn't come around into the back behind the counter. I told her I wasn't sure if it was a private area and was just trying to be respectful. She rolled her eyes at me. I told her that I didn't have a date and that I just needed my curtains hemmed. She responded "oh my gosh no, i'm way too busy for that." She made me feel stupid for even asking her for such a demeaning job to be done and said she was busy for the next 2-3 weeks and told me to go to a dry cleaners. read more

I was referred to Gaffney Fabrics by 2 people yesterday. I visited on Wednesday afternoon 2.9.22. An upholstery retailer and a professional costume designer made the suggestions. I continued my travel having never been aware of this store previously. I did not want the common fabric available at Joann's and know that online shopping does not offer our senses the understanding of touching, seeing, and feeling fabric in person. I trust my senses. I am creative. There was one VERY AMICABLE saleswoman and one NASTY saleswoman in the store who had me in tears. I do know the difference between assertive and aggressive. A good salesperson meets sales objectives while remaining polite and helpful to customers. This will explain the encounter. The single negative person is a knot of closed-minded judgments and has no place in a fabric shop. Her reasoning or commentary had zero to do with supplies, methods or form following purpose. She is slim w/ a very fair complexion and dark curly hair. I believe there was an image of a coccyx hip/bones and sacrum on the back of her shirt. This woman treated me aggressively with, a rude, foul insolence, saying that if I didn't know what I wanted, she could not help me. This person did NOT act as an EDUCATOR with any capacity for (Gaffney's) profitable criticism. I believe her job is to BUILD a sale and solve challenges, not discourage a person as was done or make a client not want to return shopping another day! I had never been in the store Gaffney's before and really just wanted to get a feel. I will ask when I have a question for you. Ms. I know it "NOT at all." Other people in the retail space quietly passed by and offered empathy. Dear Gaffney family ...3 strikes and she should be OUT!!! Fortunately, there was another salesperson in the store who kindly and courteously answered a few questions. The Gaffney Fabrics shop sweetly recalled a store I would visit with my Mother and Grandmother, on Main Street, in Darby, PA, as a child. It was between the big Church & a Woolworths. The bolts of fabric made huge rainbows. We always found something pretty for a new project. I WILL return, on a different day. I have more to delineate, and will also consider asking others for guidance as required. It was very convenient to find a fabric store so close to home. It's not in the greatest of neighborhoods, but in the daytime you've got nothing to worry about. No one really greeted me when I came in, and no one approached me and asked if I needed help, but once I got up to the counter with my selections, they were nice enough. Personally, I kinda like to be left alone when shopping, but if you're someone who wants a lot of attention, you might not get it so easily here. The selection and prices were both very good in my opinion, I only stayed on the main floor, but I gathered from reviews on other sites that there is a basement and upstairs too. The fabric I wanted ranged from $1.99- $4.99 a yard, which I consider good prices. One big drawback for me was that all the notions (buttons, zippers, etc) are kept behind the counter so that you can't get to them. Even when I was staring at them for awhile, no one came over and offered to help me, so I left without purchasing any buttons, which was one of the things I came in for. I guess they're afraid of things getting stolen, but for a more timid customer like me, you're not going to sell me anything I can't freely browse and touch without feeling like I'm bothering a sales associate. It's so nice to have a fabric store in Germantown! Before a random bus ride, where I just couldn't stand to read my book I was going all the way to fabric row to get fabric. This place is right near school house lane on the ave., and has a great selection of good quality fabrics. Prices are reasonable. This place is huge, so go with someone who can appreciate fabric or you're bound to lose your friend... Big drawback (to me anyway) is that they don't sell patterns...booooo. read more

While Gaffneys isn't the largest or most modern of places, it is a nice little treasure trove of uniqueness. Stock is mostly rayons and upholstery fabrics with some batiks, quilt cottons and brocades tossed in. Their stock is either seconds or uncommon styles but it is a good thing. When I moved here, I was excited about the convenience of having a fabric store in my neighborhood. Unfortunately, after visiting the store a few times, I found that it was just better to travel farther and pay more money at another store in order to get what I want. It could be a matter of taste, but the fabric and notion selection is lacking...if you can actually get to the notions. Most small things are kept behind the counter and you must have a sales associate show them to you. And in my case, seem annoyed that I'm asking to see multiple items. I just found it to be an inconvenient place to shop, unless I'm looking for something super standard like a seam ripper or bobbin - even then, I need to ask someone for it. read more

I like Gaffneys - lots of different types of fabrics and sewing notions. But it's hit or miss as to whether you will find the exact fabric you need - you can't go there with the mindset "I'm going to buy 3 yards of Moda such and such line to finish my quilt project" but if you're flexible and willing to explore, you can find some great buys on things you didn't expect to purchase but can use for a future project. Two words for the wise though: "Go" before you go - the bathroom is ancient and is in the basement. And bring quarters for the parking meters. Dimes get you only 6 minutes!!! read more

We've tried buying from lots of other sources; factory direct, large retail outlets and various other fabric tradeshows and stores. Gaffney's is the best by far. The store always has something which I need because, I sew of course. However, there is one guy in there who always has an attitude! I gave him the benefit of the doubt back in December, but now it's July and his attitude is still funky. There was a huge roll of fabric I needed and I asked for help. I waited about 10 minutes and got frustrated and tried to move it myself with my daughter's help. He yells across the room, "Ma'am excuse me... blah, blah blah, blah" Oh now you can see me mister bad attitude huh? My daughter was so frustrated that she left.
