I had dinner at Galanga with my mom and brother a week or so ago when we were in Mexico City on vacation together. I'd heard a lot of great things about Galanga (and read about it in the Michelin Guide), and because of that - and because it's vegan-friendly for my vegan mom - I chose it for one of our evenings in Mexico City. Unfortunately, the meal just didn't live up to our expectations. The restaurant is beautiful and very comfortable. But when we arrived, we were told that they were out of many things on the menu - not one dish, not two - I'd say about 8 items on the menu, including most of the dishes we were most excited to try. Ultimately, we ordered a raw scallop dish, vegan Pad Thai, and Pad Kra Pao. I enjoyed the raw scallop dish - spicy and fresh - but the other two dishes were fine (flat and maybe not as expected - the Pad Kra Pao, for example, wasn't made from ground beef but from chunks of beef that weren't the most tender but weren't bad). I also had a cocktail that was quite nice - lots of coconut and tropical flavors. The other main issue we had was with the service during our meal. While our server was extremely friendly, the service was chaotic. They brought a dish to our table that we said we hadn't ordered. They left it at the table anyway, so we figured whatever, we'll eat it. We'd had a few bites and then they came back and said we'd been right, that we hadn't ordered it, and took it away, which was strange, since they couldn't serve it to the correct table now anyway. We had to ask for another bottle of water several times - it never came, so we kept asking. We finally got one after asking three times, I believe. It seemed like the staff or kitchen were having a very off night, and that happens. But when a place is recommended by the Michelin Guide, you just expect a little more. Our experience at Galanga reminded me of trying out a restaurant that has been open for a week or two and is still in its soft opening and figuring things out. In a city with so many great restaurants, I just can't imagine I'd return, nor could I recommend it to friends that visit Mexico City. They might have just been having a tough night, but it was perhaps the most disappointing meal I've had over three trips to Mexico City. read more

Overall I think this is a good spot if you more so want ambience/a chill spot to catch up with friends and you're just craving some Asian food. But overall I thought the Thai food was mediocre. Enjoying Thai food, we booked a lunch reservation here after reading about it in the Michelin guide. Here's my family of three's experience. 1) Food: It's more unique Thai food with creative spins on dishes. You won't find staples like green curry with chicken or tom ka gai soup. You will find chicken dumplings beautifully molded into blue dough and papaya salad with jumbo shrimp. We enjoyed every dish, including the beef dish with egg and rice. My wife and daughter found the pad Thai a little too crunchy, but it does come inside an egg (cooked like an omelet). 2) Drinks: We enjoyed our cocktails. The guava mimosa was very refreshing! 3) Service: It was attentive and friendly. Our food came out as it was ready from the kitchen so it's staggered. 4) Space: It's beautiful and fits its neighborhood well. We sat in their courtyard with green plants everywhere. We sat by an outlet and charged our phones as we ate. 5) Prices: This is where it's hard to justify. Yes, the food was good, but WAY more expensive than many places in CDMX. It pains me to write this as I have been going to Galanga since it opened 8 years ago or so, in a small spot around the corner from where it is now. The food was amazing, and it blew up quickly. When it moved, the prices went up and the menu changed, but it was still the best Thai food in CDMX. I continued to go over the years, and it remained great but a little pricey. That has now changed, unfortunately. The menu has changed again, some of the favorites gone, and some reconfigured. The som tum, for example, now comes with strawberries -- WTF. Never had som tum with strawberries before, and still haven't -- I was going to order it but decided against. I also have lived in Southeast Asia for years and continue to work there, including in Thailand, so I have a fairly decent idea of what I'm talking about. The rest of the food was simply OK. Too sweet in some cases, bland in others, just not right in others. They seem to have capitalized on their reputation and let the food go, relying on neck-tattooed servers to maintain a trendy and hip vibe but letting the food suffer, which is a shame. I'll probably go back at some point before writing it off completely, but would have to think long and hard before opening up the wallet and doing so. There aren't many other decent options, including the much-hyped sister restaurant. But Pin To -- which is the same owner --in the Mitikah mall has a few decent options at completely reasonable prices but with a food court ambiance -- try the pork sate, for example. Hopefully they don't put strawberries in the som tum there. This last meal was a bummer. read more

Do not eat here!!!!! I happened to eat at this place by accident while living in Mexico and found out of the blue about the head chef mistreating the rest of the employees. Food is just mediocre, nothing too special. The head chef at this establishment has been openly abusing the Mexican employees, creating a hostile and toxic work environment that no one should have to endure. She constantly insults them, calling them derogatory names like "Indians" and worse, treating them as if they are beneath her. Instead of showing leadership or professionalism, she resorts to physical aggression, hitting employees and belittling them in front of others. Her racism is blatant, and she makes it clear that she does not see these workers as equals. To make matters worse, she has been actively exploiting them financially, refusing to pay them properly, and when she realized she couldn't fire them outright, she found a loophole by moving them to an outsourced company. This shady maneuver allows her to fire them more easily and pay them under the table, avoiding legal responsibilities and fair wages. The injustice is glaring, and with the ridiculous prices customers are paying for meals here, there is absolutely no excuse for this level of exploitation and abuse. It's disgusting, and something needs to be done to hold her accountable. I'm very much surprised to see this type of behavior as I have traveled multiple times to Thailand and interacted with Thai people, they're so kind and friendly, I honestly don't know what's up with her. First time here. Was recommended from tiktok. Food was amazing! Super authentic and great flavors. Our plates did not come out at the same time, so our food got a bit cold waiting. Galanga - galanga - galanga! I've been missing Thai food in Monterrey, Mexico, and so when I planned this trip to Mexico City, a friend strongly recommended this restaurant, and it is a gem. Wow! It's a large restaurant set into a large traditional Mexican home. The space is perfect with a high-ceilinged main area and cozier, but not too crowded, bar area. There are lots of fresh flowers and in the evening candles. Waitstaff is knowledgeable. They know the dishes inside and out and make excellent recommendations and pairings. Take some time with the menu as sometimes they have seasonal dishes in addition to their standing list of dishes. The house cocktails are luscious, bright, and beautiful, so enjoy one while you're deciding what to order. The flavors in the food are vibrant and strong, and the ingredients are high quality and fresh. I've eaten from both their seasonal menu (spring) and their standing one. The som tum (green papaya salad) from the spring menu was perfect. The tom kha gai soup was perfect in Mexico City's heat, incredibly comforting, even though it had been a winter staple for me in Detroit. It gets buys and prices are high for the area. We were excited to try Galanga after a week in Mexico City as we were ready to try a different cuisine in the city. We made a res for dinner the day before just in case it got busy and it was a good thing we did as there was a line outside when we arrived around 8pm. We ended up ordering the khao soi, claypot rice vermicelli with prawns and roti pratha to share. The khao soi was my favorite with a rice brown and tender chicken. I do wish the broth had more spice and a stronger punch but the flavor was good overall. The vermicelli noodles were served in a steel bowl and not a clay pot which was a bit confusing but the noodles themselves were yummy and comforting with familiar southeast asian flavors. The prawns on the other hand were bland and overcooked. They were a nice size but treated really poorly. The roti didn't come until were pretty much done with our dishes which was odd. We almost forgot about it! The roti came out buttery but to the point it was pretty oily and oddly sweet. It also lacked the flakiness of a good roti and didn't have noticable layers. All in all - it's a nice environment for sure and it's rare to see elevated Thai food in Mexico but the food is really a 3.5. I would give it a 4 overall including the great ambiance and nice service. read more

Galanga looks straight out of Thailand from the online photos and the beautiful food. Their presentation skills are second to none. We were sold before we stepped in the door. The courtyard is amazing and gives you the feeling of eating in a nice Thai garden. There is plenty of spacing between tables and the open ceiling does not feel like you are in busy Mexico City. We ordered the colorful dumplings and fried chicken skewers wrapped in banana leaves. The dumplings contain chicken with peanuts, yellow mung beans and shrimp. The colors and presentation were amazing while the flavor did not let you down. The decor on the dumpling is playful and entertaining. The fried chicken with dipping sauce held its own and could of been a stand alone entree. Our order was shrimp pad Thai in a beautiful egg net basket with grilled shrimp, and a beautiful presentation with flavor. We ordered the Thai beef salad with grapes that was very well done and looked incredible. The steamed veggies were OK but not impressive. The green curry with eggplant also contained good flavor and not overly spiced. It also came with delicious roti. One cannot leave here without an ordered of mango and sticky rice. The colors in the presentation were over-the-top. They were only exceeded by the delious flavor. This place is a Thai gem in Mexico City. If you eat with your eyes, this is your place. The service felt slow but we hardly noticed as everyone had an exceptional dinner and great conversation. If you like Thai food, this needs to go on your list. Delicious Thai food! I fell in love with their chicken dumpling. It's not just a normal chicken dumpling; I think they caramelize the chicken then wrap it and steam it. It's very flavorful! The other two types of dumpling are okay; I don't really like the mung bean one because it's too sweet. The noodle soup is pretty good, a little too much bean sprout tho. Galanga is located in a beautiful and very hip part of town. The restaurant itself is beautiful and the service was excellent. The food was very tasty and presented in unique and beautiful ways- we had the pad Thai with soft-shelled crab, a Thai-style elote salad, and the curry puffs. Perhaps the most notable part of the meal, however, were the drinks- I had my favorite cocktail of my entire trip in Mexico City, and for the price it was an absolute steal. Now I've been to Thailand several times for work and for pleasure, so nothing will ever compare to Khoa Soi in Chiangmai (not even Bangkok), but this was pretty decent. Bangkok decent. The Tom Ka gai and the papaya salad were also delicious. We also got a Thai tea and some other drink and we paid about $100 US dollars which would have been about $70 in the US but not as nice. We also tried the khao soi, a personal favorite northern Thai dish that was also super bland and mostly tasteless - had to add a ton of chili and lime to it. The mango sticky rice should've been great but instead the mango was raw and sour and the coconut ice cream they said they served was actually vanilla.
