November Challenge - 10/30…read more This place is dank; your shoes stick to a floor that seems to be made of beer-velcro, and it smells like spilled booze and ammonia. But it's wonderful, and all the funnest people in town hang out here (and I'm not just saying that because they're my friends, although, my friends are pretty fun). The main stage is for suckers. I say that, because the main stage is a surefire way to have a one-star experience at Nanta. You wait, you wait and you wait, and they let one guy sing the same One Direction (I keep wanting to call them New Directions, but that's Glee... also, Nude Erec... I mean, what?) song four times in a row before you even get your chance. Is that guy on the payroll? Because he's not even kind of good. I came here on my birthday with my sister, and they let two people sing the same songs 4x in a row, and never let my sister up on stage. Then, they told her they didn't even have her song. It was an extremely sour note to an otherwise stellar evening, previously spent at Anju and Commonwealth. No, you want one of the gooey, "Holy Testicle Tuesday, I do NOT want to see what this room looks like in the daytime" private rooms that are each named after a famous city. There, you can sing your heart out in a handful of different languages, every song on each mucilaginous page if you want to; no waiting for wanna-be rockstar "I carry a grip of premixed Karaoke CDs in my glove compartment because I'm kind of a big deal" guy whose fan base will never extend outside of these walls. Make new friends by caterwauling to Butt Rock's finest ballads, while your clothes slowly soak up all the beer that seems to be all over everything. Sit down, stay a while, go home and take a fully clothed Crying Game-esque shower. Isn't that what your 20's are all about?

Oh Nanta... you came and you gave without taking... my microphone away... Oh Nanta…read more I'd like to think my singing skills have more to offer than my random making up songs to Barry Manilo tunes skills. Whatever my skills, you can show off yours at Nanta. Don't worry, it only looks sketchy from the outside. Inside, you've got your pick of the main stage or private rooms. And it's open 7 nights a week. Like Lonnie mentioned in his review, the second best part is being able to program in your own song instead of waiting for your turn to come up based on what the karaoke DJ is trying to sort out. The best part is the anime dancers in the background. Sometimes their on beat... more often not so much. English song selection isn't very big, and it's never updated from what I can tell. But if you love to belt out a little Ace of Base or Aqua, you're bang on. Oh, and need a duet for Barbie Girl? I sooo have that one down.

There is something that continually and regularly draws me back to O'Sullivans Restaurant and Bar…read moreat noon. It's a strange thing, as I have many restaurant choices during the day, including going downtown, to a myriad of second rate establishments to eat. So what makes me choose O'Sullivans? Quite frankly, it's the cosy, unpretentious atmosphere, and the exceptional food that appeals to me. There is no fake or fraudulent fusion food here! No pretentious or phoney nouvelle offerings! Just authentic, genuine and wholesome food, prepared in the best home-style cooking manner. Solid, savory, scrumptious, tasty and mouth-watering meals. I suspect that is really why I come back all the time. It reminds me of the spirit and incarnation of the neighbourhood petit bistros of Paris, where I spent many congenial hours over lunch, haggling with my French business colleagues, lubricated with copious amounts of Beaujolais, years ago. And yes, there is a comfortable old world ambiance, with a four sided brick fireplace, dark painted wood wainscoting, and some well-known French art prints and Homesense artwork on the walls. So, while O"Sullivan's does not offer Beaujolais, they do offer a small, but great value for money, selection of wine, by the glass, or the bottle. How can you go wrong, drinking a glass of Fish Hoek (usually described as the "art of simple excellence" - but then I'm biased as a former South African) from the Western Cape, in South Africa? Again, nothing pretentious, nothing outrageous, and no need for a cellar of 2000 vintage bottles! While there is no coquille saint-jacques, no sole grenobloise on the menu, who really cares, when their chicken quesadillas, shepard's pie and chicken pot pies are exceptional. O'Sullivan's market themselves as "genuine food and drink". I believe that they do just that! Go and visit the restaurant and bar. It's the real thing. With a real and genuine owner, constantly checking on the customers, and with real and genuine buxom waitresses making you feel at home. Chaucer would have written about O'Sullivan's in his Canterbury Tales, had he lived in this Century. There are no phony and false smiles greeting you at the front door, no teetering self-conscious juvenile hostesses on 6 inch pumps, practicing to become waitresses at Cowboys, and no need to wait for someone to stupidly lead you to a table. Just open the doors, read the "plats du jour" on the black board, find a table and you are set to experience O'Sullivan's! The restaurant is in a strip mall just north of Chinook Centre. I don't even know if the strip mall has a name. However, it's easy to get to, and there's lots of parking. I highly recommend this neighbourhood restaurant for business or pleasure, particularly if you are not trying to impress anyone!

For a corner pub, you just can't beat it! Service from the bar, kitchen and the wait staff is a…read more10/10!!! Food rating for a corner pub is easily an 8+!!

He was so aggressive with me, and I dont know why. I paid to get in, I tipped the queens, I bought drinks, and I was treated like a loitering vagrant. Unbelievable. I won't be going back, and I'll be telling the scene back home to avoid this place. Not worth it, for the rudeness of staff, and poor quality performances. This is clearly not a safe space. Maybe I don't look "queer enough", but I'm certainly no vagrant. The drag show was just ok. I'm a drag performer visiting from the eastern united states, and I thought it would be a lot more impressive than it was. I found the queens to be sub-par at best. They were terrible dancers, the songs were tired old top 40 songs, the performances were uncreative and unnecessarily sexual and vulgar. Whatever happened to class and talent? My boyfriend (also an accomplished drag performer) and I are moving to Canada soon, and we'd been considering moving to Calgary, but if this is the scene, I think we'll have to pass.

Had the best karaoke experience in Sole…read more It was my brother's birthday and we had reserved a room for 7. When we arrived they had issues with the kitchen so no food could be made. They profusely apologized and suggested that we could wait until the issue is resolved, which could be 1-2 hours or more and just stay in one of the rooms without room charge or stay in the room until we can find another restaurant to reserve. We decided to wait and look for another restaurant. After we were in the room for about 20 minutes we were told that the issue has been fixed and that we can order food if we would like. And they would still honour the no fee room for how ever long our booking was. So we got our large food order in a very timely fashion and I must say I am so impressed. The Korean food they serve is quite good and very authentic. Their liquor selection is great, the karaoke room was very clean, and omg their washroom is so posh! And the service and atmosphere is awesome. My brother enjoyed his birthday and would like to return again soon. Overall a very great experience! Would definitely recommend!

The old location was so fun - cheap but delicious food and drinks and you can sing to your heart's content in a private room with your friends! This new location is all that but so much more. The space is large but still intimate and the karaoke rooms are beautiful. The drinks are just as good as I remembered them years ago and the food is just next level - a vast improvement on the food previously served. I would say that the food is Korean/Korean fusion. Even at 11pm, the food was amazing. When I realized that they were open for lunch, I had to try it. They have an off-the-menu seafood udon soup that hubby discovered and it was so fragrant and had all the unami flavours - only thing was, the portion size was WAY too big for the three of us! We also had the bulgogi gyoza (a must order!) and the KFC (scrumptious!). One of my friends ordered the bibimbap but I was too full from the udon noodle soup to try it. Despite how delicious the food was, the restaurant was not busy for lunch. I'd attribute it to the new location and the fact that people wouldn't generally assume it would be serving lunch. I will definitely be back for lunch as often as I can! And, of course, when I had the urge to sing pop songs with my friends. This place is a hidden gem.
