My local vet and everything I could possibly want: caring, kind, straightforward, and reasonably priced. Highly recommended.

Exceptional care, compassion, and kindness when we needed it most…read moreMy husband and I were vacationing in Galena, Illinois, with our two small dogs when we noticed that our 14-year-old Yorkiepoo was having a difficult time walking. Since we had been traveling and driving from Texas, we initially thought he might simply have a hitch in his giddy-up. But being a senior myself, I felt he needed to be seen sooner rather than later. I called Veterinary Associates of Galena around 4:15 p.m. and explained what was going on. They closed at 5:00, but without hesitation, they told us to bring him in. When we arrived, they took us back almost immediately and began examining him. They did blood work and even contacted our veterinarian back home in Texas to obtain his medical records and make sure they had everything they needed to properly evaluate him. Thankfully, his blood work came back perfect. They prescribed medication, and we were back at our hotel by about 5:30. The next morning, he was only so-so and was acting a little funny. I called Veterinary Associates again, and they were able to get us an appointment within a couple of hours. As he seemed to be feeling a little better, I ultimately decided to cancel the appointment. They told me that if anything changed, they didn't have another opening until the following morning, but they would do what they could. Unfortunately, by about 4:00 that afternoon, he had taken a major turn for the worse. I told my husband, "We need to go to the vet," and we didn't even call ahead. When we arrived, they immediately knew something was wrong and rushed us to the back -- and this was on a busy Friday with a full waiting room. They examined him extremely thoroughly and then sat down with us and counseled us through what was happening. Sadly, we were faced with the most heartbreaking decision a pet parent can ever make. What meant so much to us was that we never once felt rushed, dismissed, or like we were imposing on them, even though they were incredibly busy. Every veterinarian, veterinary technician, and staff member treated our precious boy with such compassion and dignity. And I especially want to mention the wonderful girls at the front desk. They were every bit as compassionate and caring as the medical staff. Because everything happened so quickly, I was having a very difficult time trying to figure out how we were going to get his paw prints back to Texas. One of the women at the front desk told me she would personally pay for the postage. Since it was the middle of summer and she was concerned the prints might melt during the trip, she even offered to take them home and "bake" them herself so they would be safe to make the journey home. That small act of kindness meant more to me than she could possibly know. Losing a beloved pet is heartbreaking under any circumstances, but having it happen while you are hundreds of miles from home makes it even harder. Veterinary Associates of Galena gave our little guy the care, attention, and dignity he deserved, and they gave my husband and me compassion when we were at our most vulnerable. We cannot thank the entire team enough for everything they did for our fur baby and for us. We may have been from Texas and only in Galena on vacation, but they treated us like we had been their clients for years. If you are looking for a veterinary practice in the Galena area, I would wholeheartedly recommend Veterinary Associates. Five stars doesn't seem like nearly enough.

When I called I got a quote on the phone for how much the visit would be which we were happy to pay, but after our visit in which the doctor was rude, judgmental, and extremely off-putting, we went back to reception only to pay a bill that was around $100 more than quoted on the phone. When I asked why, the receptionist said it was because they ran a urinalysis. No one at any point said they were going to run a urinalysis or even asked us if we'd like that to be done. Besides the guy taking our girl and bringing her back in with the doctor holding a syringe of urine in her hand no one ever told us that a urinalysis was something they were going to do nor tell us the cost for if they were to run one. We would have happily paid for the visit and urinalysis IF AT ANY POINT it was told to us that the urinalysis was going to be added on. Not only was the lack of communication that led to the extra charge unprofessional but the receptionist, my god. If your not happy with your job then leave it because your rude, unwelcoming, wretched attitude was disgusting. We were ten minutes late for our emergency appointment due to road work leaving our town and were happy to wait any amount of time it took to get squeezed in but treating people like they're an inconvenience, a waste of time, and with terrible customer service is embarrassing. Do better. And for those still reading, do yourself a solid and go to Colonial or literally anywhere else.
