My wife and I enjoyed a pre-anniversary dinner at Galley & Garden, and overall it was a very good experience. The service was excellent throughout the evening. Attentive, knowledgeable, and well-paced without ever feeling intrusive. The atmosphere was one of the highlights of the evening. The historic home setting creates an upscale dining experience that feels elegant without being overly formal. Adding to the charm was the background music. The selection of 1920s-1940s big band music fit the setting perfectly and gave the restaurant a timeless feel that enhanced the entire experience. We started with the Pimento Cheese Fritters and House Pepper Jelly. The fritters were crunchy, cheesy, and flavorful. The pepper jelly paired nicely and was one of the highlights of the meal. Bread service with butter was included. It was fine, but fairly average. The surprise star before the entrées was the soup of the day, a combination of collard greens, black-eyed peas, Conecuh sausage, and chicken broth. Comforting, flavorful, and distinctly Southern, it was excellent and something I would gladly order again. For cocktails, we ordered the Banana Rum Old Fashioned and the Golden Paper Plane. Both were well-balanced and enjoyable. My wife ordered the Lobster Ravioli. The presentation was beautiful, and the cream sauce and sausage worked well together. The dish was rich and satisfying, though it could have used a little more salt to bring everything together. I ordered the Short Rib Pot Pie. The presentation was excellent, but the flavor did not quite justify the price point. It was good, but not memorable. For dessert, my wife ordered the Banana Pudding. The presentation was excellent, but we both felt it could have used a little more sweetness. I ordered the Bourbon Pecan Bread Pudding, and it was outstanding. Rich, warm, flavorful, and easily the best thing I ate all evening. The bourbon, pecans, and vanilla ice cream came together beautifully. If you visit, save room for dessert and order this one. Galley & Garden delivers excellent service, a beautiful atmosphere, and thoughtful presentation throughout the meal. While a few dishes fell short of expectations for the price, the overall experience was enjoyable and made for a great pre-anniversary celebration. read more

We went here on a Friday night for our anniversary. We did make an early reservation, but even when we left, there was hardly anyone there. The setting is very nice in the historical house. The service was great, everyone was very friendly. But the food was all so underwhelming, especially for the price. I would agree with another review that the rolls were the best thing there. Neither of us liked the walnut pate & we both typically enjoy vegetarian dishes. I ordered the salmon and the plate looked very skimpy. The salmon was cooked very nicely & It tasted fine. I did not taste "maple glaze". Rice pilaf & broccoli were mid. My husband ordered the pork shank and said it was OK. The sweet potato purée with it was probably the best thing out of the whole meal. Bread pudding for dessert and it was too sweet! And The Irish Maid drink I ordered from the bar was just OK, weak. Wasn't a horrible experience, but not happy about the amount of money we spent for the taste of the food. Would not return. read more

The food was absolutely delicious, and the staff were friendly and attentive throughout our visit. We did not have to wait long before the food came and all ingredients were fresh. The steak was tender, crab cake was crispy, and the piccata had so much flavor. Good portion sizes. Parking was fairly convenient, with a small lot available as well as street parking nearby. My family of three has a tradition of dinner out on Christmas Eve. This year we chose Galley & Garden since we hadn't been there in a while. Everything about it was great! From the ambiance to the service to the delicious food! I had the pork shank and loved it. The waiter said it was "fall off the bone" tender, it wasn't quite that but good nonetheless. It was served alongside collards and mashed sweet potatoes which was a great pairing. My daughter went with the lobster ravioli and loved it, my husband had the short ribs which were very tender, flavorful and delicious. We hadn't been to Galley in several years and unfortunately we were underwhelmed by our recent experience. The positives... This place is absolutely adorable and has a nice ambience for a date night! It is located in a historic early 1900s grand home in the Highland Park area of Birmingham. It's been beautifully renovated with an open kitchen, a bar, and there's also some outdoor garden type patio seating. There's convenient complimentary valet out front. We were promptly greeted on our Christmas Eve visit and given an option of two seaters. We started with the pimento cheese poppers that were tasty but a little overpriced and some warm bread arrived shortly thereafter. Unfortunately, those were the highlight. Not feeling too enthusiastic by the menu offerings, for entrees we both chose the turkey and dumplings, suggested by our server since it was a seasonal addition to the menu. This was such a poorly conceived dish that consisted mostly of two salty biscuit-like mounds with very little vegetable or even turkey for that matter. Priced at $34 we found it to be a complete rip off. Aside from that, service was average for the price point and it took a while to even get our check or even spoons to eat the broth. Galley & Garden is located in downtown Birmingham at a beautiful old home location. Valet service is offered at arrival, but street parking is also available around the corner. Service was quick and very attentive. Onto food, this is a perfect place for elevated American food. I enjoyed a salad, beef entree, and key lime mousse. The beef entree was cooked perfectly, and the mashed potatoes were a great side. I absolutely loved the key lime pie mousse - it was tart and sweet. My friends enjoyed their decadent chocolate cake. This gets a 4 from me instead of 5 because it feels more like basic elevated American food. Don't get me wrong, it is still delicious, but I feel like I could find similar food at other establishments! We went last weekend for our anniversary and we had a wonderful time. We had probably the best meal we've had since we moved her about 2 years ago. The portions were huge! Everything came out within an appropriate time and at an appropriate temp! The garden and building are beautiful and they have complimentary valet. Savannah was our server and she was very attentive. Decent restaurant, but not quite up to the service quality the prices indicate. We ordered: Southern Pickled Shrimp - not worth it Maple Glazed Salmon with broccoli and rice pilaf - Salmon was perfectly cooked, a rarity for sure at restaurants these days. Broccoli was underwhelming, but rice pilaf was decent. Veal Osso Bucco with Parmesan grits and collard greens - the server called it pork shank when they delivered it, causing some confusion. That is very concerning for a dish that costs nearly $60. The shank was very good, slow-cooked and tender. The collards were great, and the parmesan grits were properly cooked and did a great job mopping up the juices. My biggest concern is that the server didn't know the difference between a pork shank and a veal shank when there is a $20 difference between the 2 dishes. Now I wonder, did they serve me the wrong dish? White Wine Poached Pear with Acai Berry Sorbet. It had great flavor, but it was served only with a spoon. The pear was way too firm for the spoon, so a butter knife had to be repurposed to cut it into smaller pieces. That was not appropriate service for a $15 dish. It either should have been served with appropriate utensils or sliced so that a spoon could have been used to eat it. The wines were decently priced for the quality by the glass. While perusing the menu, I ordered an Old Fashion to start with, which was very poor. I don't know how they made it, but it wasn't an Old Fashion. Overall, the food was good. However, the knowledge and skills of the servers did not quite meet the price point. read more

However the cocktails were disgusting! Margarita was missing something...made me shake it was so gross. Instead of dessert we opted for Espresso Martinis. I don't really know where to begin. Everything was just perfect. We celebrated my mom's 80th birthday in the Parlor with a surprise party. Teri was great with our event planning and helped us plan a great event. Meghan was amazing as well as our server and made our dinner so special as our server. She took such good care of everyone on our party and made our night perfect! Our food and wine was delicious!! The valet staff was so helpful as well in helping us load our car with the party items. So smooth .. easy I always love the ambiance /mood here and this time there was live music! Always a welcomed backdrop in this type of setting. I hate to drop a star in this review but hear me out. I ordered the 3 course option to which I opted for : granola parfait (appetizer), chicken and waffle (entree) and the key lime mousse for dessert. Guys , I LOVED everything except my entree (chicken and waffle). It was very lackluster and I just was underwhelmed. I didn't even eat it all. We will definitely be back. The interior is cozy and feels like a dinner at a close friend's house ... I'd love to come here with six or seven people and sit in the dining room to the right as you walk in -- very nice. Abigail was our server and she was super sweet and attentive. She checked back regularly. She knew the menu and explained things well when asked about a specific dish. The menu is creative and interesting. Tonight I ordered the duck pot pie and the pimento cheese appetizer. We also ordered the Caesar salad and Romain lettuce salad. They have a buttermilk dressing, which is their version of ranch as well as a peach vinaigrette which I loved. I'd like to come back and try the watermelon salad. They have some classy big band music playing lightly in the background. The restaurant is pretty quiet but that could be the day and time we showed up (Sunday evening). The fried pimento cheese pairs nice with the five pepper jelly. I must admit I wasn't brave enough to try fried green tomatoes with lobster on top ha ha. However, I'm sure these folks can do that exactly the way it's supposed to be done. Maybe I'll try that next time. The bread is served hot with butter and is delicious with a light sweetness. They are very generous with their simple syrup for the sweet tea. You can make the tea as sweet as you want, and it comes out in a cool looking container similar to that of an unbranded Coke bottle. Finally, we had the banana pudding topped with whipped cream and graham cracker crumbles. It did not disappoint. Call some friends and plan a meal together here. We enjoyed it very much. To start the fried green tomatoes were quite bland. My wife had the fillet with crab cake, very salty. I had the scallops, fettuccine. There were a total of three scallops in my dish. Three scallops with fettuccine noodles for a price of $40? Another form of shrinkflation I guess. Other upscale restaurants in the area the scallops would be twice that amount. Very disappointed in the food quality and taste. Once again the service was excellent!, we wish the dishes matched that attention to detail. Had a fantastic evening here! First of all, when we got here I was thrilled to see that parking was not going to be an issue. They have their own parking lot. This restaurant is in an old house so it's a really great atmosphere. You can tell some of the windows are the originals because they have that kind of wavy look when you look through them. We were given a table for two and were distanced from other diners. For our apps, the server suggested the oysters and they were so good. Lightly battered and fried, delicious. Hubby got the flat bread which was also really good. The sommelier recommended the bottle of wine we had and it was fantastic! It was bursting with flavor. One of the best bottles of wine I've ever had. For my dinner, I got the salmon and hubby got the filet. My salmon was great, perfectly cooked. For dessert, I had the mousse. It was also incredible. Our server was nice and the waitstaff made sure they checked on us often. Initially I ordered one of their seasonal cocktails, the Maple Leaf. After a couple of sips I exchanged it for a standard Old Fashioned due to the drink being so much sweeter than anticipated. Thankfully, they happily swapped it out for me. After cocktails they brought us out some fresh dinner rolls and butter. I loved how they came out fresh and warm. For dinner I ordered the Caprese Chicken. I know, so adventurous of me ‍. It was one of those nights where I couldn't decide what I wanted, so I went the safe route and got chicken. It was good, and I was happy with my selection, but it was nothing special. The service is super nice and provides a very pleasant experience. Valet parking is convenient on site. There is a fabulous outdoor dining area as well. The food here is quite good. We came for Sunday brunch. The yeast rolls are little fluffy clouds of doughy goodness served with a strawberry butter that will truly expand your mind!! I had the tomato turnover, which was quite a delight followed by the scrambled eggs, bacon, and biscuits with sausage gravy. To "average down" on the calories, I chose a fruit cup over potatoes. The fruit cup was really something special in itself. The freshest, best mango I've ever had outside of South America. They really pride themselves on quality fresh I ingredients. Friends and I went to Galley and Garden for Sunday Brunch. I'm a basic person when it comes to breakfast food. Give me some bacon and eggs and I'm happy. G&G has a bacon and egg entrée on their brunch menu, but I gave it a pass. Brunch is prix fixe--you get two courses for $27 or three courses for $35 and I just can't bring myself to spend twenty-seven dollars for some bacon and eggs that I can cook at home for five bucks. No worries, they have plenty of other options that won't leave me feeling that I've been mugged. The third course is dessert, and I wasn't sure I'd have room for any, so I told our server I'd have to wait to decide how many courses I was having. My first course was the fried oysters, and they were exceptional--plump, cooked to perfection (I hate being served overcooked fried oysters) and the cocktail and remoulade sauces that came with them were spot on. My pals ordered the tomato and burrata salads. Their salads tasted fine, but they were served on hot plates! What's up with that? Were they hot because they'd just come from the dishwasher, or were they hot the way plates are hot when steaks are served on them? I suspect the former, but the point is, you don't serve a delicious, chilled salad on a hot plate. The greens don't appreciate it. Despite cooking the salad, it was still tasty. Course two: Two of us ordered the short rib. It was remarkably tender, no knife needed. Flavor-wise, I've had better, but it was still quite good. I was on the way to getting full (those oysters were BIG) and ended up taking half of it home, but my friend cleaned his plate. I wouldn't hesitate to order it again. My other friend order the breakfast flatbread and enjoyed it, but like me, ended up taking some of it home. (When she reheated it later it was just as good the 2nd time around.) No course three for me, but my pals each ordered dessert. One got the peach buckle and the other got dulce de leche cheesecake. Once again, the cheesecake came out on a heated plate. Seriously, G&G, cut that out! Chilled dishes need to be served on chilled plates! The cheesecake was a perfectly fine cheesecake, but it shouldn't have been called dulce de leche, maybe Brown Sugar Cheesecake on a Hot Plate. The service was good, the food was good--if you order food for which you'll get your money's worth. The plating needs serious attention, as it has an adverse effect on the quality of the food. Fix that glitch, offer bacon and eggs at a reasonable price, and you've got a five-star brunch. read more

So we decided to go check it out and this is definitely one of the top eating spots in Birmingham. The decor is funny because you are eating inside of an antique home that is set up like a restaurant, but they know exactly what they're doing.
