I can't believe there's actually a store like this that exists in Houston! The largest selection of classic games (yeah I love the 80's) and great customer service? Everyone here is super friendly and always in a great mood. Gamestop doesn't even greet you when you walk in their stores anymore, much less GRUNT. They have an array of selection from Atari to the present day PS3's, Xbox 360, etc. Game Over also holds video game tournaments, which I hear are ridiculously crazy. This is the ultimate video game store in town. They have games for every console ever, including the short lived 3D0. Their selection is very wide, and they have most games for the retro Nintendo systems. The museum at the back is a nice touch, displaying many systems, most of which can also be bought there. I do have, however, one big issue with Game Over Videogames: their prices. The Super Mario/Duck Hunt cartridge for the NES is one of the most common games ever. They are so many of those that they have been used to build coffee tables and even shelves. Even in the store, they take a considerable amount of space compared to other titles. And yet, they price it at $9.99, while it's valued at about $1.00. Similarly, I found a copy of Super Mario All Stars being sold at $50, while it is very easily found at eBay for $10. And these are not isolated examples, most games cost about four to five times what they are really worth. Overall, great store, amazing and knowledgeable staff, but the prices are too damn high. read more

I live way over on the North West side of Houston, near Greens Point area, but this store is well worth a trip at least once or twice a month! Staff are extremely friendly and helpful. My husband and I are game collectors and have visited numerous retro stores throughout Texas hunting down games. While Game Over Video Games is a little more pricey than many other places, it's still one of the best: 1. They have a great selection of games from all the gaming systems. While many places might just have NES, SNES, Sega, etc., Game Over has those AND Atari 2600, 5200, 7800, TI games, Sega Master, Coleco, vision, Sega CD, 32x, etc. They also have a wide selection online that has free shipping if you order more than $50.00. 2. They have a wide selection of all the accessories for the systems. 3. The games are much cleaner than most of the other places. 4. The staff is always friendly and helpful. It's a great place to find some games, especially the older ones that no one else likes to stock. read more

Fun place! Very relaxing atmosphere with a pretty good selection. Even though I'm quite shy, I broke out of my shell to make a new friend in the store. We were both talking to one of the employees about our Dreamcast collections. It was a very enjoyable experience, and I'm looking forward to going back. My only two complaints would be that the Sega selection seems to be pretty small, and the prices can be a bit high. They didn't have a single Dreamcast game on my list, and only a few for Genesis that I'm currently looking for. They did have a fantastic selection of imports and rarities and responsible prices. Which brings me to my second complaint of high priced items. It seems that the more common games are really high, but some of the more rare items are better priced. I ended up purchasing a game for fifty, that's normally over one-hundred bucks online. I'd say it's worth the trip alone just to see the art and experience the retro. read more

Was offered 6 dollars for 4 PS4 games. Didn't accept and turned around and put them on Facebook marketplace and sold for 15 each within 1 hour. If you are still taking your video games to stores like this in 2017 then you deserve to be shafted by them. There are so many options (Craigslist, Facebook marketplace etc) where you can connect with the buyer without these middlemen shops. Only reason I gave them 4 is cause they are friendly here and have a pretty nice selection of older model consoles. But I feel like it's only a matter of time before these places go out of business when it's so easy to connect buyer and seller without these undeeded middleman shops. read more

I was first told about this place through a close friend of mine, he mentioned this place was a retro game store! That immediately got me hyped! The moment I set foot in the store I felt like I was in heaven...my childhood reborn! The staff are always helpful and awesome and I've had plenty of conversations about old games with the folks! Oh and this place has awesome small tournaments for retro games every third Saturday of the month and being around a bunch of "retro heads" is a great feeling. I highly recommend this store to any retro gamer or any one thinking about going back in time and relive classic games. It's really fantastic that places like this one are available. I come here about once a month and find games from multiple different systems. All super affordable. Even though I've had a good experience in the past at this location, I can honestly say I won't ever be coming back after today. I called the store this morning to try and find out if they had a game I've been looking for. I was greeted very rudely by "Luis". Who seemed annoyed at my simple request to look up a game in their inventory. Even though there are plethora of Gamestops located in the area, and Gameover's prices were often more expensive than the competition, I still showed support for this local smaller chain. Not any longer. If the employee who picked up the phone disliked his job that much, he should probably reconsider why he's still working there. It's not my fault you hate your job dude. read more

Cool store, like others have said with a wide selection of vintage games for everyone. For casual gamers like myself looking for a break from the awfulness of Gamestop it has positives and negatives. At least here I don't get hassled to pre order everything or talked down to like Gamestop employees like to do. However the staff here isn't fantastic either and can be very klick oriented. I am not a hard core gamer, but most of the people who go here are... so get ready for a store full of the stereotypical over weight dude bros with zero personal hygiene habits, girls with 100% Hot Topic wardrobes, and 9 year old kids trying to convince the clerks to sell them GTA. Prices can be a little nutty on some items, so Ebay is probably a better bet if your looking for something specific. read more

Horrible service and the employees are extremely lazy. I arrived 15 minutes before they closed and they refused to give me service. Their reasoning was they didn't want to start a transaction before closing time because they wanted to go home. I've been going to this store since it opened and have provided a lot of business. Not only did they refuse me service but they were extremely rude about it. I drove 30 minutes to make it before closing time and still they turned me away. I have never been treated so poorly by a couple of low lfe employees that only wanted to close so they could go get hi. Extremely disappointed and I advise others to forego this treatment and go to gamestop, a much better alternative. read more

Really great team here. I bought a used PS3 that ended up not being able to read my two games for whatever reason, so they gave me a better PS3 with a larger hard drive and a better controller for my troubles. Used consoles can be finnicky but they replaced my purchase right away. read more

Please update your hours... I flew in from Los Angeles to visit family for the holidays, and drove 45 minutes to the location as a stop before going to the airport for my trip home... arrived at 10am, only to see a sign on the door saying you don't open until 11. I read great reviews and was hoping to be able to visit the location for a little longer before leaving Houston. Decent selection of games. Not great. Cool little museum in the back. My biggest gripe is that they do not cut you any deals on the games. All games are retail only and they seem to have a zero haggle policy . Had I known this I would have never have walked in. They sell used games for crying out loud. They should work deals with you especially when buying in bundles. No decent retro gamer should ever buy a retro video game at sticker price. Always try to cut a deal. This shop reminds me of the comic book store from The BiG Bang Theory except with video games. They've got games for almost all the systems out there. And I really likes the small video game museum in the back. They not only sell but also buy video games. Prices are really affordable and not marked up. There is also some unique consignment video game themed art for sale as well. You really have to love and appreciate gaming to come in here. Can't wait to come back. read more

I dig this place. Every time I go, there are a variety of new old games to tempt me, and the staff are very friendly and helpful. The prices for the low-end old games are maybe just a little high, but there are really good deals on the middling and high-end stuff to be found. I like to roll by here before I buy something on eBay because 1) there's a pretty good chance they have it 2) it's usually cheaper here (even before shipping) and 3) I can play it that day. Been here several times. If you purchase something and check in on fb, you get a dollar off. I would check in anyways even if I didn't get a discount because this is just the kind of place everyone needs to go see. They have a lot of old school games, some new games and some random stuff (gaming related of course). I just bought my friend a donkey kong jenga game which is pretty awesome. They also have events. I haven't gone to one but plan to. All their events are posted on facebook. The workers are always helpful, friendly and they know their stuff. Shopped here a few times. As other reviews have said service is a bit hit or miss. Sometimes the guys/gals behind the counter are nice and helpful, other times they ignore you and act like its a chore to ring you up. Inventory isn't bad but since this is a retro game store they can only stock what they can and the selection is always worth checking out sundays/monday because a lot of people sell games on the weekend. But all in all its a great trip down memory lane. As far as helpful they usually are very open to helping in any way whether in repairs or in suggesting other shops if you cant find the game you want. One time they helped teach me how to replace the game battery in a GBC cartridge and sold me the tool to open it. In short thumbs up and keep up the good work! read more

Bought four games from Game Over for Xbox 360(from brandon who was very helpful). Put them in my brand new, Xbox 360 elite less then a month old and receive "Unreadable Disc" for two of the four games. Cosmetically these games looked ok, however they WOULD NOT read on my xbox after multiple attemps(all other games work fine). I returned to Game Over the following day and politely asked for a refund - explaining that although the game looked good they were not definitely not playable on my console. The worker told me that if the discs were cleaned and playable on the store console they would not accept an exchange. After waiting on the associate to clean and buff the discs I had to continue waiting for him to find a 360 console and hook it up to one of the stores televesions(15+minute process) . You could hear the console turning and trying to read the discs and after a long delay the games slowly appeared playable on the dashboard and were able to be read, however if the games were only needed to be buffed why were they sold to me in an unplayable condition? If i would like my money refunded(i was requesting store credit) and have a receipt why would you not refund your customer ? I wanted to exchange the games because they didn't work the first time - plain and simple. If your telling me after driving all the way BACK TO YOUR STORE THE NEXT BUSINESS DAY - WAITING 30 MINUTES FOR YOUR EMPLOYEE TO CLEAN THE DISCS AND PUT A 360 TOGETHER - I cannot simply have my money refunded you have just lost my business. You can keep the two copies of these debately playable games - I left them on your counter for anyone to have. Avoid this store. read more

From the desk of Jacelyn's boyfriend: Nostalgic place to buy retro video games. If you're looking for older systems or games, this is the place to get it. They also host a very cool classic game festival in Austin. A little pricey, but you do get instant gratification on your purchases as opposed to ebaying it. I regret to say that their customer service is less than stellar. Don't get me wrong - there are a couple of times when we've gone and had a great experience. The times that were not great were AWFUL. First, my girlfriend went there to surprise me with a new snes system and some games, she says she got good service picking out some games ($120 for 3, plus extra controllers). She asked about the return policy and the guy selling to her assured her that they would accept the exchange through January. We went back together to exchange a couple of the games (I wanted Mario and Zelda) and some Sheldon Cooper argued like hell that absolutely they could not because it was not their policy to do that, and all but called her a stupid liar. Pissed me off. Fortunately from out of nowhere the dude who helped her showed up and cleared everything up for us and we were able to make the exchange. Second, they had an issue with their gift cards not working at the point of sale, so after waiting for 40 minutes (they had the snes available to keep me occupied) the store clerk offered to extend a discount of 30% to me if he could hold on to my gift card there at the register, I could take the game home, and come back later when it was up and running. No problem - I went about my business, came back later, it still wasn't working. He asked if I could return another day, so I did. The clerk at that time refused to honor the agreement. Annoying, but I dealt with it, even though it was about a $25 discount. Went back to go spend the remainder of my gift card. 8:45 pm I roll up to the store and as I'm getting out, I see a girl haul ass to the back, and a dude comes running out to the front to LOCK ME OUT. No joke! Couldn't believe it. I showed him the time on my phone arguing that I still had time to shop and I knew what I wanted, but he yelled that they were closing and walked away. I want to support small businesses, but I will not shop there again. I hope management catches wind of this review and tries to get to the bottom of the situation so it doesn't happen again. read more

I'm done with this store. I can't say all, but most of the employees I've dealt with have the worst social skills. You'd think a retro game store would be chill and you could talk NES with the employees or ask them common questions you feel like you shouldn't have to google for the answer, but that's not the case. Another key word here is UNEDUCATED. ...unless maybe you're into the latest handheld systems... If you're looking for something particular that's older than PS2 you will be way better off just doing 5 minutes of research on google and then purchasing whatever you need on eBay. My problem is I like to support local retail businesses. Stores like this give me a reason to shop online and I don't like that. Anyone who buys anything here is blind, lead by the blind. I'm an avid game collector visiting from Dallas and like to add to my collection without going bankrupt. Although this place at first seemed cool until I saw the prices. I could get better deals through eBay or craigslist. Collecting games is a hobby for me not a lifestyle. This place is only great for sight seeing. The staff is okay as the owner was kind but the other guy working at the time ignored me half the time and when I told him I was going to park my car closer to the store he looked at me like I was crazy. I enjoyed the atmosphere but I probably won't go to another one of these again since there are cheaper options if you look. read more

I heard that Game Over had opened a location here on Houston and went to check it out. The selection of classic games was unparalelled. The staff was friendly, knowledgable, and attentive. The best thing about the shop, though, was the atmosphere. I felt a wave of nostalgia just walking through the door. Their gaming museum is a must see for any collector, and would be very cool to show to some younger gamers. I could loose a lot of time just hanging out there, but I am really looking forward to their tournamemts and events with full prize support. This store is everything you want a solid local game shop to be and then some. They don't carry much in the way of newer games, but I can get those anywhere.
