Previously had only been to Gamescape North in San Rafael, glad I finally made it to this one! Lots of games and an area for playing in the back. The guys working here are clearly all super knowledgeable too and were walking people around the store and suggesting games that would be good for whatever number of people/style of game they were looking for. If you want to get a new game but are a little overwhelmed come here! They will hook you up and steer you towards whatever you have the greatest odds of enjoying. :) read more

I didn't have time for a pre-release event, but I still wanted to collect some cards. I found the closest store after visiting Japantown's Cherry Blossom Festival. First time visiting to see if they sold any Pre-Release kits for Magic the Gathering's "March of the Machines." The store is clean, well lit, and fully stocked of tabletop games and game accessories. They even provide masks at their entrance, encouraging mask safety. It looks like a very family-friendly place. I saw a pair of parents hanging out at the very back while people played cards at nearby tables. I saw 2 young kids talking to a staff about game strategy (poison pokemon stuff). All the staff are very friendly and welcoming. Each one interacted with me at some point, asking if they could help with something. I ended up buying 2 kits and a 300-count card box at good pricing. Went in to buy some booster cards and sleeves... when we asked if we could use the tables to play magic the guy at the counter informed us they're only available for use during event hours. Well there was no one in the store and I don't really understand why they wouldn't be available for guests spending money especially in the middle of the day when they're not being occupied at all.... Seems like it's bad for business? You can go to any other game store in the city and use their tables and they welcome it so I don't know if it was just the guy working on a power trip or if this is actually some weird rule they have. Either way I'm happy to go out of my way to any other game store in the city that creates a welcoming environment. read more

I recently got into tabletop miniatures including a game that recently was discontinued. The game had some really weird shaped cards that didn't fit traditional card sleeves so I went to Gamescape to see if I could find any thing that would fit and Alex and David were fantastic! I had forgotten to bring the cards with me and they took the time (at 5 minutes to close no less) to first look up the dimensions of the cards in question and then search through the vast inventory to find what I needed. To be honest, I felt bad that they were going through so much effort to find something as simple as a set of card sleeves but that amount of effort and knowledge has convinced me that Gamescape is a store that deserves my continued support and business. read more

My companion and I sought to enjoy a game of DnD with a starter set (because I've never played), and after checking multiple stores and their selection as well as availability of being open on Easter Sunday, we found our way here. It's an amazing shop with so many tabletop and card games, and we were able to find the DnD set we wanted that is quite hard to even locate online! Highly recommended for board game enthusiasts. If there is one thing I wish I can recommend is that I hope they can stock some scopa card games eventually. We really wanted to own a deck. read more

The employees here are extremely knowledgeable in majority of the games and gave recommendations based on what you're looking for. I called eight stores and finally located Game Scape. We drove up from Belmont where we were at another game store. We're glad that we did. This store is amazing. I live in the peninsula, but the excellent customer service and game knowledge at Gamescape is enough for me to drive out to the city. My favorite thing about coming to Gamescape is that the employees are not only passionate about board games, but knowledgeable about how to play them. During my last visit to Gamescape, I asked for a recommendation based on four of my favorite board games. The employee suggested Wingspan to me and gave me a description of how the board game works. Walking into GameScape was like swimming in a ball pit, 'cept full of games instead of balls, and without the icky germs too. There were games floor to ceiling. I walked in on a critical mission--locate the most under advertised, awesome game there is, Monopoly Deal, AKA, Monopoly's little sib that's an action-packed card game sans the super long lulls of boring, big sib traditional Monopoly. Basically, you can kick the pants off someone eights times and have way more fun doing it in the time it would've taken you to snore your way, begging, kicking and screaming, through a win in the original board game. So anyway, back on topic. While I was on my mission, I noticed board games, card games, handhelds, classic games, new games, stuff I've never heard of before, and hard-to-find stuff like my precious Monopoly Deal. It seems no one carries it any more at the big box stores. Prices were reasonable, the store seemed fun and interesting to browse, service was helpful and enthusiastic, and being there made me happy. After (too) many years away from the board-gaming world I happened to walk by Gamescape and was immediately captivated by the store. War games, board games, role playing games... you name it. These folks have it all! The staff is very helpful and the regular players that gather there are extremely friendly and will gladly introduce you to whatever game is being played that day. You might be able to find cheaper prices online but I am more than happy to pay 1-2 extra dollars to support our local store and enjoy the Sunday Warmachine sessions. read more

The staff at Gamescape is amazing! I walked in before Christmas and immediately a guy behind the counter asked if I needed help, to which I said, "yes!" I wanted to get my boyfriend a two person board game that we could play, but the ones we have bought in the past are super lame. The sales guy asked me what kind of games my boyfriend likes to play and then walked me over to a section where there were several options. He explained each game and gave some really good recommendations. I play a lot of board games and I appreciated the fact that he never spoke down to me or assumed that I wasn't knowledgable about games as well. I ended up walking out with two games, Lost Cities and Morels. When my boyfriend opened his presents for Christmas he was so excited! We ended up playing both the games that night and they were both super fun! We are both really competitive and these games have the right balance of strategy and opportunity to screw over your opponent to keep them interesting to play over and over again. I am a huge nerd for cooperative board games. Everybody working together against the board game? I'll take it. This shop was amazing with such an extensive collection of games. There was a lot to choose from as well as so many expansion packs galore. Why this hits the five star mark is the astounding customer service that I experienced. The staff is very knowledgable and helped explain a lot of the different games that were in the store. While I was there I saw them help a family find games even at different stores that weren't even connected to them. They were patient and called every one including Target to help this couple find some random expansions to some style of games they were looking at. read more

Whether you need Columbo: The Game or Kojak: The Game, this is the place to go. They have the best selection I've ever seen of obscure board games, many based on 70s and 80s TV shows. The downside is that this place is just about the most expensive game store I've ever been to. They do have a good selection though, and I try to stop by whenever I'm within a 1 mile radius. read more

I'm not sure if I've bought anything here yet, although I know I've been in at least a half dozen times. I'm not much of a board gamer, although I do enjoy one if someone cracks one out, so I find myself wandering over to the RPG books or trying to find out what's in the world of Rubiks and then usually getting bad flashbacks as the nerdy gamer geeks in the back start yelling about their saving throws or how much mana they've tapped out and dude shouldn't be playing that card. (In fairness, the gamers in the back seem to be polite, occasionally enthusiastic, normal guys just having fun. It was only once where some guy got all huffy and slammed cards down and banged the table, at least that I witnessed. Gamer dudes be super serious about their Serra Angel or something.) I think most of what this store caters to is board games though. I haven't seen much in the small hand-held puzzles (like Rubiks cubes) and while they do carry RPG books, the selection isn't huge. The bulk of the store is filled with shelves of boxes: anything you want from Axis and Allies to Pictionary to Clue and probably five versions of Monopoly. We did stop in this past Saturday with the intention of actually making a purchase but they were sold out on the game we were looking for. An employee indicated it would be back in stock soon so we'll likely return in the next week or two. read more

Went to this place for the Magic pre-release today (my first ever) and the staff and people who attend are all really awesome people. They are welcoming and veterans there are happy to be kind to newcomers like myself. They took time and patience to help me learn and give me tips, which is exceptional. I think that speaks to the environment the location and staff support and encourage. I'll definitely be back and had a great time despite my limited Magic knowledge. I love this store, I've gotten back into collecting trading cards and I'm so glad I found these guys. They are very helpful whenever I walk into the store. Their online service is simple and easy. Went to pick a game for the holidays. The game was being sold for 50$ went the game itself can be found from the disrupter for only 35$ as well as other places. When asked if they would price match they acted rather uncomfortable for being called out on upping the price of the game by 142%. If your looking for a good deal or even just paying the MSRP amount I would recommend avoiding this place. But they do have a large selection of games. read more

I ordered a game for online pick up in retrieved it a few hours later. They aren't currently set up to allow browsing, but the employee joyfully and readily answered my many questions about other games I had been considering buying. He even retrieved boxes and walked me through the gameplay using the pictures from boxes as reference points. I was the only person in the store, and another customer waited outside. I'm happy this spot is still operating because they're such a great neighborhood store. Everyone was masked and hand sanitizer was available. The most beautiful FLGS I've ever stepped foot into! It has an "old library" feel... lined with dark wooden floors, wooden shelves and high ceilings. This place has been here for years & you can definitely feel the history when you're there. The shopping experience is wonderful. There's a nice flow to the space... A shelf with new releases as soon as you enter, followed by more shelves and tables of the rest of the games. It looks overwhelming at first glance, but thankfully they're organized to game type. Toward the middle of the store is the customer service counter, attended by friendly hosts. Past that lies an rpg section as well as a wargaming/miniatures area. Play tables, with a great deal of demo games, are situated nicely in the back. They've used this space perfectly... It's packed with stuff, but still feels roomy and makes for a comfortable experience. If you're driving, parking can be a challenge and will feel like an accomplishment... earning you some VPs. This FLGS is definitely worth your time, money, blood, sweat & tears from the parking situation. read more

I was scheduled for major surgery in SF and drove up a day early to have some fun in the city as well as scope out the area surrounding the hospital where my surgery was taking place. Gamescape was a stone's throw from the hospital - what a pleasant surprise! My inner board game geek was certainly satisfied! This store has a great selection with competitive pricing and ample space for gaming events. This review would be 5 stars but I had to dock one due to the service (or lack thereof). Hubby and I were completely ignored by the three staff members during our visit. The store wasn't busy at all; apparently making eye contact with whoever walks through the door is too much to ask? Despite that, I feel that Gamescape is still worth a visit for the selection alone. I'll likely be back the next time I'm in SF. read more

The staff was very knowledgeable, and steered us towards Forbidden Desert. They also had Dragon Farkle in stock, with none of the markup that online sellers are doing right now. A true game store, which is hard to find these days. Definitely the best game shop I have been to in terms of variety for tabletop RPGs. I came in to purchase the core D&D books and was surprised to see the huge collection of other games and systems that they carried. The cashiers were incredibly helpful and friendly.
