Cool shop, I like to stop in every few weeks to pickup something to read. Atmosphere is nice, the decor is cleaner than an old school comic dump but not pretentious like the new hipster boutiques. The selection is geared towards Western comics, graphic novels, art books and indies but there's a manga section near the front too. The indie selection is surprisingly good and has work from artists around the bay. The manga section has mostly mainstream titles (to US readers) so if youre looking for something like a Weekly Jump or currently popular Japanese stuff you may need to go to kinokuniya. Staff have always been friendly and helpful and are good for recommendations. The neighborhood is a little sketchy and there's no street parking but it's right next to the Bart station. If you signup for their reward program you can get discounts and save money too. read more

Came here bc we happened to park in front of the store. Really loved this store and my eyes have been opened to the world of graphic novels and the variety. I could easily spend hours in this store. I am really into manga and they have a section for it, but to see the variety of American graphic novels blew my mind. I didn't know so many existed. They even had my favorite lore Olympus. I love going here for comics and mangas when I'm in the area. The prices are good and he will hook you up with a good price if you ask him. The owner is cool asf and the customer service is awesome he helped look for the book I wanted. Definitely gotta check it out if you're in the area. read more

To begin with, I'm a bit envious of those who own comic book stores. Regardless of how very little I know about running one and what I imagine would be hard work keeping one afloat anyway, I still applaud those who do. From what I've seen, those who have a shop of their own tend to enjoy it. (At least it appears as such.) And Mission: Comics & Art seems no different. Despite the location being a little tricky to find (this coming from an out-of-towner), once there, you can relax, literally. I mean, there are a couple couches just awaiting anyone who wants to have a seat. No rush. I like that. However, I was at Mission to sift through some of their back issues, and maybe it's just me, but I just have such a hard time looking through comics that are propped up like books. The fact that they're not even bagged, that they're just standing up against one another make it so difficult to wander through. My fear is that any moment, if I make a wrong move, they'll all come cascading down. Again, maybe it's me. I'm sorry to say, though, that on this day, I hadn't the time. I was in and out within 10 minutes, and I left empty-handed, which wasn't my intention. Although I didn't take advantage of it, I really appreciate the Yelp Check-in offer: a free back issue. Next time when I'm in the area, I'll give Mission another run-through. See you then! read more

I walked into this store looking for a batman comic but found so much more. Even though, the store is small, it packs a wide selection. While my back issue Batman was not in stock, I managed to find others just as interesting and exciting. The board games even deserve a look! There were not many staff there but for a reasonably small store, it packs a punch. read more

I'm on vacation with my wife in San Fransisco and I had to check out the top rated comic book store. Needless to say I was very impressed and understand why this place has such stellar reviews. From the moment I walked in I knew this place was special. They have all sorts of cool art work from local artists on the walls, including a very cute dog named Puddin. There was a table with new items and sale items that were pretty great. In the back they had their weekly and monthly titles all set up. While, they didn't have the title I was looking for, the gentleman working tried to find it for me. I ended up walking away with a few other items, including a tote with Puddin on it. read more

Great store !!!! I just went there yesterday with my friend who visited from Miami. The comic and the gallery spaces are really nice. There is a lot of natural light coming in the store. It makes you want to just hang out in the space. I also like the location, just off of Valencia & Mission. The owner was very friendly and told us a lot of interesting stories. Went to check out this place today looking for some comics my brother wanted. My second time looking for comic books last week I was at Pacifica. I liked how this place had 4 sections set up from "this week-previous weeks" I didn't find everything I was looking for but still managed to take something else. The parking here is challenging as this place is in the mission, I got lucky to find a spot quick as I arrived. The place is not too big and seems a little unorganized in some areas. The staff was average and not too friendly, he seemed kind of not really there. That's why this place takes one less star and for the inconvenience of parking. read more

My experience in this store just now epitomizes what it is like for a female to go to a comic book store. It probably isn't every comic store, and it probably isn't even every employee at this store. I walked into the store just to vaguely look around. I usually buy something whenever I go to comic book stores, so I thought I would wander around a bit. I saw a collective series I enjoyed and asked the guy up front if they had the newest release by that author. He looked at me blankly and I said that they had a one off that wasn't part of the series. He then took an extremely condescending tone to tell me that there was no new release and that the special edition came out over a year ago, which isn't new at all. I asked okay, do you have that? He looked it up and then informed me that it came out in December, and definitely isn't new. This entire time, he was explaining everything as though he were speaking to a particularly unintelligent child. Incredibly frustrating, and needless to say, I did not purchase the series collection I was planning on getting. read more

I love this place! They have a pretty nice library of comics as well as other geek and pop culture merchandise. The staff was friendly and the place itself has a comfortable vibe. Last time I was here, they offered to order something I was looking for for me- I declined because I had already spent my budget on comics that month. This time I came in and they had the whole series! This place is really a gem & it's clear that the shop is run with so much attention and care. Bright and inviting, I parked my car and was hurried on my way to the Rituals Coffee. Then I was curious enough to check this place out, first pop in my head with some hesitation. "Hello! Happy new year!" said the guy behind the counter, waved at me with a smile, "Come on in!" I was happy to bounced from aisle to aisle, amazed with the vast collections of comics they have. It's a very American style comic arts, which is new to me because I grow up with the Japanese Anime culture. Nethertheless, it's still refreshing and interesting. There's also a gallery space in the back, and was fun to browse through. I also found a lot of small fanzines of comic arts by different local artists in the back. They're cute and sweet and unique in their own way. A very pleasant place to visit, I want to see more of them in Mission! read more

In the words of the Comic Book Guy from The Simpsons, Leef Smith is the best comic book store owner ever! I have been getting my weekly fix of comic books from Leef over the past year and have received unmatched customer service. Leef is really tech savvy and implemented a rewards card system. After accumulating points over the past year, I received a $75 book FOR FREE! Additionally, Leef is a man of his word. I subscribed to some of the hot DC 52 issues. When the prices started heating up, Leef did not jack up the prices like some other unscrupulous dealers. Mission Comics & Art also has a fabulous small art gallery in the back. Mission Comics & Art does not have a large stock of back issues, but does have a cozy sofa where you can sit and read. Leef also implemented a lending library system so you can borrow and read comics for a small fee. Easily the best run comic book store I have shopped at over the past 40+ years. Whenever I'm in the mission, I always like to visit Mission Comics & Art. The store is stocked with some rare and out of print trades that you will not find anywhere else. Leef, the owner is a great guy with a vast knowledge in comic books. He recommended me some awesome comics that I would not have thought of before. In addition to the great atmosphere, up to date comics, and friendly staff, the store hosts a monthly art show of some amazing artists. Last month it hosted Ben Walker's art, who is one of my favorite. The art is also on display during business hours which is awesome. I would recommend anyone to drop in and check out this great store. read more

A few months ago Mission: Comics & Art's staff recommended me my first comic in years. I was in need of a new Spider-Man story to get into, and the staff talked with me and sold me on Ultimate Comics Spider-Man. This was the catalyst into my new hobby, and I'm very happy that Mission Comics is my local shop. The staff is pleasant without hovering over you as you shop. When you DO have a question, they're fast to help you find that first issue of the new book that caught your eye. The new location feels like you're walking into someone's personal collection.. It's bright and laid out in an inviting way, like you want to hang out here flipping through pages for hours. There is always spirited discussion to overhear while you find your new favorite book. read more

This is without question the best comic shop I have ever been to. That includes Golden Apple Comics, Forbidden Planet and SoCal Comics in San Diego. I love those places, but it's so rare to see a place that has a great DC/Marvel selection AND an unparalleled Alt selection. I can always rely on Leef to have Jason's or Adrian Tomine's latest while still having a great Grant Morrison backlog to look to. On top of all this is the Graphic Novel Library which let me run through Y: The Last Man without having to plunk down $100+. And there's even more with a great selection of local comics and an art gallery on the back. I'm fairly sure Mission: Comics & Art has set the bar impossibly high for any other local comic book store to match. read more

The shop is fantastic. I love the selection of comics, the vibe, and the gallery in the back, but what I like most is what Leef contributes to our community. Throughout the year, Leef shares his spot for artists and creators to share their knowledge and skills. He's hosted our annual 24hr comic book day event each year since he's opened, and has given many local artists a chance to showcase their work in his gallery in the back. Many shops have a couple shelves where they feature local comics near the back of their shop, but I feel like Mission Comics takes the time and respect to keep their local section looking sharp. The locals art section is prominently displayed, organized, and well stocked. Leef seems dedicated to keeping Mission Comics a spot that gives back to the community whoever he can. In a neighborhood that seems to be changing rapidly, it's great to see shops like MC keeping art and creative alive. read more

Had an extremely embarrassing and anxiety-producing affair trying to use a gift card here. I was sent a gift card for this store via email, it provided a code that said: "present code to cashier at check out." Seemed pretty straightforward, like how most gift cards work, but both cashiers had no idea how to add my gift card to my order. 20 minutes of the repeat questions, restarting the system and finally calling their manager who also couldn't help and thought I was using a gift card for a different store. I felt terrible about the experience, I just wanted to use my birthday gift.. So I paid for full price for my books and left. I tried to use the gift card online, but there is no way to do that either. I have no idea how to use this gift card. The person who bought me this gift card did not realize it would be such an ordeal or was given any indication that I would need to bring something physical representation to the store. It's 2021 and this is a weird problem to have. I love comics and this was an enormous letdown of an experience at a new shop for me. I don't even want to go back.
