Oh man, Garden City Inn! Where to begin on this one, not the worst hotel/inn I've ever been in, but not the best by any means. Let's dive into the details. This is a solid 3/3.5 hotel; don't expect any frills or extra commodities. You get a clean bed, a working shower, a TV, and a view of the beach. The closest thing to a perk I had was a full fridge instead of a mini one. As the saying goes, "you pay for what you get", this place is cheap for that reason. You don't get any emails regarding check-in/check-out after your initial booking of the hotel. So just an FYI, however, you can call and find that info out. If you care about everything looking pretty or top of the line, then this isn't the inn for you! If you don't care about looks and want the basics, this hotel will get the job done. There were a lot of quirks in my room, to say the least, some of these include: a stink drain that was sticking sideways (It still worked though), Maintenance handy work on the bathroom frame (Hammer dents near the door frame), no hair dryer, no ceiling lights (they have a lamp and one near the door) no charlie bar for the balcony and the ouside frames/chairs needed wipped down from the pollen. I also found it hilarious that there are no photos/paintings/ on the white walls. Just blank, use your imagination, I suppose lol. However, something about the quirks above made it feel oddly more roomy/lived-in? Like you were staying at a college dorm instead of a hotel. The staff was very nice and considerate. I had some trouble with my card reader, and they were very sweet in helping me out. Alongside, when I told staff about the above room quirks, they seemed to jump on the case for fixing the above. Which surprised me, so hopefully, by telling the staff, it will be better for the future. read more

Right on the beach with great views. Pool with lots of lounge chairs and BBQ's on the deck. However, this is a small motel with low quality rooms. Mine smelled of smoke. Cleaning was not done well as there was long black hair on my shower curtain and a wash cloth from the previous guest hanging over the shower rod. Plenty of ice.. read more

Small loveseat with no back in middle was facing one bed and the cushioned chair missing from our room so the only usable seating was small table with 2 hard chairs - Toilet too close to bathroom sink - In-room phone not working - Housekeeping came early - we asked them to come back in an hour and they never did. When we returned to room had to call down for them to send someone up - she brought towels and made beds but no sweeping - For a non-smoking property, the smell of smoke (and pot) was overwhelming in the office, pool and around property. Horrible place. We showed up and requested a refund. If we were not allowed a refund we were fine staying at the property. While the front desk personnel was waiting on his managers approval or non approval a customer walked in off the street and requested a room. He said we'll sincevyou are getting you're money back I'll give her you're room...a few moments later his manager declined the cancelation and we were left without a room or our monet back. This was at 10:00pm at night and my family of four was left without a place to stay that night and they did not care about it. They were just happy to take our money & the persons money off the street for our room. The front desk attendant then also motioned for me to go outside out of view of the cameras and tried to get me to agree to some shady deal where I would get my money back. Great location! Small, older hotel. Quiet area. Our time only allowed for a one night stay. We felt very safe staying here. (Just my teen daughter and myself). We arrived about 2 hours earlier than check in, the front desk staff was very accommodating and found us a room that was available to check in at that time. Clean rooms. Comfortable beds. Amazing water pressure in the shower! Apartment size (definitely larger than the regular mini fridge in most hotels) refrigerator/freezer and microwave. All rooms are ocean front with balconies. Pool area is nice and roomy. The space could use a few more pool chairs and maybe another shaded area. The mini mart attached to the hotel was also conveniently located for snacks and beer! I heard a lot of negativity before my stay. But, I enjoyed it! No bugs of any kind! It was clean, and the water pressure was good. The toilet flushed good the first time! That is a first in my 40 years of beach roaming. The flange would stick, but I can handle that! The view is beautiful, as is the pool area! The staff was very nice too. The only draw back is there is no elevator, but I was on the second floor and didn't care that I didn't have one. read more

This place is nearly as old as the beach itself, but for location and price, it's hard not to consider. Fair warning: no elevator. Nope, nadda. The owner's are renovating rooms which are needed. At first glance the facelift looks nice; however, when viewed more critically, it's more like they bought a medical tourism procedure somewhere south of here. Wrinkles, cracks, and leaks already starting to reappear. In other words, it won't last. But, my bed was firm and comfy! The parking and pool areas are nice and refreshed, as is the painting of the building. All structures this close to the surf are abused relentlessly by the elements, so it's tough not to notice. All in all a decent value, but not your upscale spa-like beach retreat. read more

Man patrolled the parking lot during the day which made me feel safer and like they actually care about the place! There's a small store right next door where you can get drinks, snacks, cigs, beer, etc. The parking lot is super clean. Very limited parking space. Stayed here for one night. The place was disgusting. Hair all under the furniture, dust collected all over the air conditioner and a used washcloth left on top of the shower curtain. When we were first booked into our room, a $2500 stay, two-five-zero-zero, I immediately noticed two very large, ongoing leaks that ran from ceiling to floor. Given this location is prone to tropical storms, okay whatever, the manager said maintenance would be up to fix it no problem. When maintenance showed up, we were apologized to, and moved into a 'premium' room. What is in the premium room, you ask, that warrants a one-star? Mold. The entire room, infested. The baseboards. The fridge. The BEDS! the beds they expect my child to sleep on. This place is NOT worth your time, and the promises of the manager to not 'move us from one problem to another' are completely empty. 2ND UPDATE 7/27/2022: I am pleased to report that the Garden City Inn has reimbursed me for the $400 I paid to the Myrtle Beach Pawn Shop to retrieve the ring. I have received several courteous communications from the site manager about this and appreciate the efforts made to correct the issue. Despite the trauma this caused, I can say that I would feel comfortable returning to the Garden City Inn! UPDATE 7/13/2022: The original post below was submitted on 7/7/2022. Since that time much has transpired. Through the efforts of my daughter Katherine Blanton using her social media skills in posting information about this, we caught the attention of someone who had seen the ring at a local pawn shop. We contacted the shop and confirmed the ring was indeed the one that was stolen on 6/30. It had been sold to the shop on the same afternoon. We notified the GCI and the Horry County Police Department (HCPD). There were two options available for me (1) buy the ring from the pawn (at cost) and have it back immediately, or (2) have the police take possession and hold until the case is closed in court. In either option the criminal case would proceed. I chose option (1) with the hope that I might get part or all of my money back eventually. The GCI has identified the thief and he no longer in their employ. A warrant is pending. I would like to thank both the GCI (Susan Dire) and the HCPD (Officer Heather Touzel) for their support and assistance in this matter. THE ORIGINAL REVIEW: This is not a completely negative review. For the most part we enjoyed our stay at the GCI. The room was nice, clean and comfortable. The view was great. The price was reasonable. The staff was friendly. I have stayed in motels and hotels for 50+ years of my adult life, and until my stay at the GCI I have NEVER had a theft from my room. And this was a big one, my 1976 Virginia Tech class ring. One of my most prized possessions. On Wednesday 29 June at 10:30 AM, I left my room (308) and set up on the beach in front of the hotel. 10 minutes later my wife left the room and joined me. At 12:30 PM, I returned to the room to make a couple of sandwiches to take to the beach. I noted that housekeeping at been in the room and a stack of new towels and washcloths were on the vanity and the trash was emptied. I thought it odd that the beds were unmade and the towels and washcloths had not been put away. At 3:30 my wife and I returned to the room to start getting ready to go out. I showered and dressed and at that point could not find my ring. I mentioned this to my wife and she said "it is right on the dresser, I noticed it when I was leaving the room". It was not there. It was not anywhere in the room. I reported this to the onsite staff at the front desk. He promised to question the housekeeping staff. I also reported this the next day to another front desk staff member. I was told everyone was aware of the incident and everything they could do was being done. On Friday I visited the local police station and reported the theft. So far no one has gotten back to me after multiple follow-up messages from me. I appear to be getting ghosted by the GCI and the police department. I feel that the GCI management knows exactly who has the ring but is afraid to do the right thing here. It is extremely frustrating. I have suggested to them that all I want is the ring back, no questions asked. If they can device a way to permit the thief to return the ring anonymously I am perfectly OK with that. Whether they are working this angle I do not know since I seem to be ghosted. All I want is my ring back in my hands. read more

Horrible experience. One good thing was the lady at the front desk was nice and understanding. We got to our room and there was sand all over the bathroom, already brewed coffee in the coffee pot, TV wouldn't turn on, and dust everywhere! We stayed for 20 minutes and decided it wasn't worth it in these times where things need to be extra clean. We got our money back for one of two nights and just ended up going somewhere else. Let me start with the positive. The inn is in a nice area of Murrells Inlet. Quiet but not too far from the action. Only a 15 minute walk to the Pier/Sam's Corner. Beach views from the room/balcony were amazing. Also, being able to walk out directly onto the beach from the inn without having to cross a street or long walks. The pool facing the beach was nice and even though I didn't get to use it, that area was well maintained. There was pool furniture and a grill for guests to use which was nice. The small onsite convenient store was a plus. Now on to the negative. The whole place needs updating. There are no elevators. The bathroom was very small and the "white" towels no longer looked white. Unfortunately for my boyfriend, the toilet seat would not stay up. The beds were very firm and damp. I ended up having to use my own sheets to feel comfortable. There was no proactive cleaning in the room. I had to constantly talk to the front desk to get more towels. The balcony did not have a screen door so we couldn't leave the slide door open for long or risk having bugs fly in. We could never connect to the wifi. There was always a musty smell in the room even when the air conditioner was running. The only mirror in the room was the one in the bathroom. That made getting dressed difficult. Initially there was no iron in the room, so I also had to get that from the front desk. I had to iron my clothes on a small table because there was also no ironing board available. The furniture in the room was very old and in bad condition. We also had issues with the key to the room not working. And we spent our last night with an unlocked door because the door wouldn't shut/latch. If you're looking for a place to just shower and lay your head, I guess you can work around those issues. But we were uncomfortable while showering, getting dressed, and even sleeping. read more

Worst customer service ever. They cancelled our reservation 24 hours ahead of time without prior notice. We had a deposit down, then they tried to run the full amount on the card the day before check-in...but the card had been changed since the original reservation. So when it did not work they cancelled the reservation (but kept the deposit). When to we called to inquire the woman working the front desk blocked our attempts to connect with the general manager even after we booked at a different hotel. Ok so stayed in room 302 from Fri to Sunday for a quick getaway. Paid $636.00 for August. Called earlier in the week to see if we could get a bottom room floor and spoke with a lady saying she was going to leave a note for this to happen. It didn't happen so oh well. Anywho got to room 302. Our card didn't work. Walked back down stairs to office and the girl automatically gave us a key and said use this someone would fix tomorrow. Yeah nobody fixed. Got in the room and it smelled of mildew. Floor was very warped, mattress mess up with big spring sticking up, top two drawers under dresser wouldn't stay closed, door messed up in bathroom, shower handle bout to fall out the wall, hardly no water pressure, killed two roaches and two spiders, stains all over wall, only 1 mirror which is in bathroom, 1 lamp, fridge so unlevel, stains on sheets and dirt and hair everywhere. We stayed and didn't complain until now. We felt nasty the whole time. Oh out of the 2 grills no gas in 1 and the burners were hardly working in the other. read more

I have never left a negative review before but this experience requires a warning. I reserved this room 1 yr ago when I stayed there last year and placed a deposit. I called 3 wks prior to my reservation to try to get a 1st floor room for my disabled dog and they could not accommodate it. I understood. The man I spoke with said that he would put a note on our reservation to preserve our 2nd floor room (no elevator), since our disabled pet would not be able to do the stairs. They moved us to the 3rd floor anyway. When we checked in I was attempting to negotiate part of our stay on the 2nd floor when the front desk clerk threatened to not allow us to stay at all. I was being respectful but did express my disappointment. He was very rude. My son asked why he was being so rude and threatening. He had already charged my card for over $1500 and then refused to check us in. We had driven 13 hrs and had no place to stay with our disabled dog. I have previously given this hotel a great review and even referred some friends. We ended up finding a better hotel (with an elevator) for $600 less but I am out my deposit of $200 and maybe even 1 night's rent (not sure about that). What an awful experience and an awful way to start my fur baby's last hoorah. DO NOT STAY HERE! read more

Rusty shower and light fixture in room. The bedside lamp is also broken. Maybe the first clues that something is amiss here are the dead palmetto trees out front and the sign that is not working properly. Clearly there is not much attention to detail going on here. And because I have a handicap, getting around without an elevator was not optimal. On the second morning we were there, I woke up and there was a big black bug crawling across the ceiling. The internet almost never functioned properly. On the plus side, there was hot water and I liked that the floors were not carpeted. I must say, however, that the outside hallways are covered with indoor outdoor carpet and it is filthy. I am not a fan of this lodge and definitely will not return. To put it simply, it just sucked. There are too many other options in the area. Look for one with a lighted sign and palmetto trees that are alive. read more

Pet friendly hotel with dog hair on your sheets, great if you want to itch all night!

This was the worst place I have ever stayed. my husband and I along with our two kids ages 6 and 5 decided to extend our beach week this year and made plans to stay at the garden city inn from 6/11-6/13 after checking out of our beach house. here is what we experienced: 1. this place claims to be a smoke free hotel...however, there were people smoking at the pool and in the hallways in front of their rooms and every where we walked the smell of marijuana was very apparent. the staff could be seen walking up and down the stairs smoking. cigarette butts littered the staircase. 2. dirtiest place I have ever stayed. this place was so disgusting we cut our stay short and left after the first day because we just could not take it anymore. a live cockroach in our room, French fries from the previous guests left in the microwave, long hair EVERYWHERE including in our beds and the fridge...just disgusting. our covers were stained and my son found someone's spare change in our bed. the walls have gross looking stains on them, the tub was brown and grungy looking, hair in the sink, etc. 3. the cheap linoleum floors stay soaking wet from the humidity. my kids couldn't walk in the room with out slipping and falling every few steps. the floors were so gross we couldnt walk in the room without shoes on. As soon as I got home this evening, I washed everything that had touched that room and I still feel completely grossed out. This place definitely ended our otherwise great week on a sour note. read more

A good value hotel with ocean front rooms with sliding doors to the balcony or to the pool. I've stayed in many oceanside hotels and homes and understand it is difficult to keep rooms exposed to the beach in pristine shape. The shoe molding was coming off in many areas and the plumbing in the bathroom, along with kitchen fixtures are a bit dated and worn, but the Inn does redeem itself with flatscreen televisions, usb wall charging, crisp clean bedding and laminate wood flooring beyond the kitchen tiled area. While carpeting by the ocean is an obvious crime, tiled living spaces make for a cold environment, so I'm glad to see they went for the laminate. The only thing I could not get over during my second stay was the lower ceiling in the unit I had in the middle third floor. I am assuming it was to accommodate something for the fourth floor, but I found it a bit jarring, especially with the fluorescent lighting. I joked that I felt as if I was rooming at the local Staples, but the truth is nothing makes a girl just want to give up more than fluorescent lighting. Four stars for balconies, new furniture, flooring, accommodating staff and being dog friendly! For the ladies out there, ask about the lower fluorescent ceilings for your state of mind. I also need to mention the online booking was shockingly simple and fast. My reaction was along the lines of "That was it?". read more

There's an additional resort fee NOT listed on web. Website doesn't clearly explain the variations in the rooms. No elevator. Dirty floor. Sheets and towels stained. Looked for bed bugs. Thankfully didn't find any. No lock on sliding. Very humid with AC on. Turned it off. Every time I walked out the door, I smelled marijuana. Maid's cart and cleaning supplies left outside door in narrow hallway. Not having a clear hallway must be a fire hazard. Pets accepted so there's barking dogs. Fireworks were discharged around 9 pm. Called desk to complain about noise. Noise ordinance not in effect until 11 pm. Glad I don't have PTSD. So much for nice quite beach retreat. Won't return. read more

Two days in a row the they didn't change the sheets or sweep the floor. I had to go to the office to get more coffee every day. This is a beach front property with a spectacular view. However, from the start, at check in, the desk manager (female) was extremely rude. We had brought two small non aggressive dogs. Prior to the arrival, we confirmed with the desk associate the price per pet. 1 $65.00 non refundable charge is what we were told. This was prearranged so we thought. The female decided to charge us for the second dog. She didn't ask how we wanted to pay, she charged the card without permission. We had that reversed. So the communication amongst the staff is poor at best. When we asked to speak with the manager , the female replied "I'm the manager and you won't win". When asked for the names of the male desk staff, she refused to help. Being that we drove 9 plus hours, there was not much fight at the time. We provided payment and moved on. The ice machine was down so you had to buy ice at a convenient store attached to the Inn. The bath room maintenance was poor and the room was fair. Always short on towels. The male staff were respectful and the store clerks were equally nice. The female aka manager needs a class on "inter personal communications" because she was the most unfriendly person we meet during the week. And based on our needs and her desire to be a poor representative of the Inn, I can't give higher than a 2 star. read more

I had high hopes for this place being I was having to switch a last minute place (1 month prior) that would accommodate another family member and be pet friendly. We came for my mom's 70th birthday. The remodel looks relatively nice, but doesn't cover up the previous side of this place that seemed to be kind of trashy. We reserved the room over the phone by paying a deposit and stated that we were bringing a pet and would need to pay a pet fee. Upon arrival two people questioned us about us paying the pet fee. They asked us to come back down and make sure we paid. It was annoying, and they were a bit rude about it. It was understandable. The following day upon returning from the beach we realized water was leaking from the ceiling above. My sisters bag and clothes were soaked. We told the lady at the front desk. She was nice about it. Checked the room above ours. Someone had sat on the AC unit on the balcony which was why it was leaking. They said they would give us a late check out to accommodate the inconvenience. Last day here at 5:00 we were awoken with a scare. Someone came into our room and turned on the light. Rise and shine! Apparently the person at the desk, George, "accidentally" gave another party staying at the same place in the room right above ours at 5:00 AM a key to our room. And they turned on the light and let the door slam. Scary to wake up to. (I did forget the deadbolt, but damn, shouldn't have to worry about other people randomly coming into our room.) Pretty sure it's a highly important to make sure you give the right room key to someone. As a main part of your job, you should be to make sure that doesn't happen. We also had a do not disturb sign as a courtesy with our dog. The people still opened the door not thinking anything of it. The man at the front desk even have the decency to come up and let us know. We received an apology when we went down to see what happened. We are up, extremely uncomfortable and ticked off. We are outta here!!! I'm so upset that this was what we had to deal with. We left at 6:00 so uncomfortable that possibly other room keys could open our door. I wouldn't stay here. read more

My stay was horrible we had cockroaches in our room and when it rained our hotel room flooded. When we told the front desk women it was flooded all she did was offer us towels to soak it up. We had nothing but problems. I wouldn't even give it one star it was horrible. The outside pool had poop in it. The view was beautiful but the hotel itself was not. We weren't the only ones having problems the room beside us flooded as well. When we booked the hotel it was we had a balcony but when we got there they put us on the bottom floor without a balcony. read more

I booked a room at Garden City Inn August 14 to August 16, 2017, I traveled 700 miles and pulled up to this hotel. When I pulled into the parking lot, I was like ugh...but thought I would give the place a chance. Checked in...the lobby was very hot. My room was 207, on the second floor. No elevator. Air conditioner did not work, room was dirty. There were bugs flying in the room and roaches on the floor. The room stunk. House keeper came to look at the room and gave us toilet paper, as there was no toilet paper and no towels in the room. He said that's just how the air conditioner works and it is as good as it gets. He said house keeping would be in trouble. The pool was right outside the room and I could see that it was cloudy. I stayed a total of 15 minutes and checked out. The man at the desk refused to refund my first night...he said there was nothing wrong with the room. I also talked to management who refused to refund my money. This was a horrible experience for me and I would never stay there. It looks nothing like the pictures they post, the ceiling was even falling in. What a big disappointment, waste of time and money. Thank God it wasn't a busy season or we would have been sleeping in the car! read more

Back in May of 2017, I called to make a reservation for 07/13/2017 thru 07/17/2017 for our family of 9. I was tickled to death to find such great rates for a 3 bedroom, 2 bathroom penthouse! While on the phone with the receptionist, she was having a hard time multitasking and was getting the dates wrong from the get-go. I regret not getting her name and not asking for a confirmation email. On 07/13/2017 we arrive at The Garden City Hotel with the family, get up to our room to unpack, and the AC unit isn't working. The receptionist immediately has the maintenance man run up the four flights of stairs to our penthouse (very old hotel and has no elevator), finds the problem is that the unit needs replacing. He then brings up a new one and it trips the breaker in the breaker box downstairs. As he tinkers with it a bit, he has to wait on some other parts and it wouldn't be fixed until the next morning. We went from Thursday afternoon around 4pm thru Friday late afternoon about 6pm. The penthouse was so hot, we had to sleep with both doors open to the outside so we could have some sort of breeze through the place. By Saturday afternoon, the temperature of the penthouse was bearable ONLY IF you didn't move around too much. (Which is hard to do when you have 6 adults an 3 teenage BOYS) After some discussion with the front desk, they offered a whopping $300 refund for the night we went without AC, that would be refuned back to our card in 7-10 business days. Saturday night, 07/15 at 11:30pm, as everyone is winding down from the day and the teenage boys were finally calmed, the maintenance man comes knocking on our door. Apparently the room below us complained of a leak in their ceiling and it was coming from us. He looks through the penthouse while everyone is trying to go to sleep, figuring out where this "leak" is coming from. He found it was coming from the toilet in the master bathroom and continues to come in and out of the penthouse 4 times within the next hour, fixing this leak. All of this had been looked over and we didnt't worry about this being an issue because everyone had been so attentive and nice to our family. Not one complaint was given about that night. Sunday morning, 07/16/2017, my elderly father had been enjoying his time so much, he goes down to the front desk to ask if there were any possibility to stay another night and to leave the morning of the 18th instead of the 17th as we had originally paid for. She tells him she will be right back with him on availability. Moments later, we hear a knock at the door and the lady from the office hands us a receipt saying that we are past our checkout time and we need to be out by 1pm so housekeeping can clean up for the next family to check in by 3pm. My jaw hit the floor. I asked how this was possible and that I didn't understand. She explained to me that her computer shows her that we had reserved the room through the 16th and not the 17th. So, here we are, the day of my son's 15th birthday, instead of heading down to the beach to cut open a juicy watermelon and have some bithday fun, we are running around trying to get 9 people packed and out of the door in a timely manner (two of which aren't even at the hotel, but were out on the town that day). As I had mentioned before, I regret not getting the name of the receptionist who took our payment and reservation, or asking for a confirmation email because this is The Garden City Inn's mistake and no one corrected it. Someone should've made this right. I even spoke with the owners, who I happened to catch outside right before we left, and they told me to talk to the office manager named Susan. I will be hearing from Susan one way or another. We were able to look past all of the other crap that went on in the short time we spent here. But when this happened and we were practically knicked out of the hotel, I cannot ignore that. The female running the front desk on 07/16/2017 has the WORST customer service I have EVER experienced.
