I recently had the chance to visit RTCC during an open house and holiday gathering. RTCC is owned by the city and it is a space where residents, community members, owners of small businesses and community groups gather together to promote the spirit of the season. It is also a historic Post Office building that shares space with Toronto Public Library and the South Riverdale Child Parent Centre.

The Event was on the 2nd floor of the Centre in a fairly spacious and inviting room which seemed quite appropriate for the occasion. The Event featured a talk about the craft beers being offered by 2 very local Breweries for about 30 minutes, then the balance of the Event was a Q&A session followed by the opportunity to sample the 5 beers on offer as well as indulge in a light snack. The location of the Centre was quite convenient, being not too far east of the Queen/Broadview intersection. The venue obviously features a wide variety of Events overall which helps to both service and showcase the quaint Riverdale community.

This building is a heritage site and a part of Exhibition Place. I worked at The Ex (Canadian National Exhibition) three different summers. My third stint was a cashier position for a Mexican eatery that was at the Automotive Building. It was just before I started my fourth and last year of undergraduate studies. It was cool working in this building. There were vintage cars that were also in this space. I probably didn't appreciate them as much as I do now, but it's nice looking back knowing that there were indeed car exhibits in this building. Gone are those car exhibits. You can only see Automotive Building as part of the building's concrete. These days, this space is for conferences. I frankly didn't go check it out. Part of me wants to preserve the memories that I have of this building. Perhaps if there is an event or conference that is held here and I'm attending it, I'd check it out. It was great admiring this building from afar. It opened in 1929. It's in good shape considering that it's practically a hundred years old. This building is close to the Princes' Gate. Parking at Enercare Centre is your best bet if you are driving. Otherwise, you can take the TTC or GO train down here. I enjoyed reminiscing. There are several rooms here, the centerpiece is the great hall... a wonderfully large room with a stage that's outstanding for theater troupes, lectures or large meetings. With it's massive space, interesting acoustics and good sight-lines, there's also the obvious... you could throw a killer party in here. There are other rooms on the main floor. It's a surprisingly good floor-plan for both separation of space and ease of use. Downstairs there are several breakout rooms, classrooms and a giant kitchen. The rumour is that the actual piano that Oscar Petersen learned on in Montreal is sitting detuned in the back of the main stage. Avant-garde groups in the city have been onto this place for a year. It's been rented for everything from conferences and showcases to math-groups and chess clubs. They'll work with you to arrange liquor permits, and are incredibly cool to partner with.

Located just a hop, skip or a stumble away from the Bathurst Subway station, an in an area with more than adequate street parking (within certain hours), 918 is a hidden event venue gem that you actually might mistake as a church - and you'd be right one bc this little beauty used to be a Buddhist temple! The aesthetic is a tad dated in some spots but you can tell they're working hard at modernizing the place more and more while retaining the original charm of the venue. The secondary room and basement are brand new, while the entrance way and the main "ball room" look more original. What I love about this spot? It's the perfect raw space, and you could literally plan anything from a wedding, gala, or trade show to even a concert or speaking engagement here. It's got that look that's the right fit for just about anything - just need to use your imagination!

Because they have a special program that weekend for Queer celebration and exhibition, we couldn't go upstairs, only main floor and the basement (gift shop) that were open. Over the years the restaurant scene diversified and now boasts not only Greek restaurants, but also Asian food, Middle Eastern food, Caribbean food, Mexican food, etc. Taste of the Danforth is a great way to sample some delicious greek offerings like lamb skewers, calamari, spanakopita, Greek pastries etc. It's also a chance to try some other ethnic eats. We had tasty Tibetan dumplings from Momo Hut and excellent tacos from El Charros. There are also lots of tasty drinks like bubble teas. In addition, there is a festival stage which plays live music, and also a few rides for kids. Do be forewarned. The festival is very busy, so expect lots of crowds. This also means long lineups for food. Moreover, the food is not cheap. Expect to pay $5-$15 for a small sample of food.

I would go again - and try to be better prepared. The negatives? We went into the International Hall and a fire alarm started sounding. With a 4 year old it was actually scary trying to get out because people were going in and out and the aisleway was not wide enough. They had put an exhibit near the door which required everyone to pick a side to go around it which created a pinch point. It was a poor design setup and they should fix that in the future. I saw no security and no one was helping out to tell us what was going on. Bathrooms were only located in buildings - so you had to use the map to figure out were they were and make a special trip to get there. There just weren't enough and they were too far apart. I feel like Porta Potties scattered throughout would have made a lot of sense given the number of people at the event. Midway games were pretty pricey - $10 (Canadian) a pop - that adds up quickly. Little kids don't understand why you can't just keep playing or trying to win something. Maybe $5 or $6? More signage is needed. Yes I had a map - but I was frequently disoriented on which way to go to a new building. Signs would have been nice.

While I have never actually used the space for an event myself, I have been there for events, and they do a great job. Their food and drinks are creative and interesting, their staff are extremely friendly and well informed, and they have a beautiful space with a great view of the city. While I wouldn't recommend their space for a wedding, for a meeting, conference or reception it is absolutely perfect. There is a great view of the city from their brand new space on the 16th floor, and while the ceilings are on the lower, it suits the decor of the space. They don't just have large conference spaces, but smaller ones as well. They can easily host a reception of 400, but also a meeting of 20 - which is really key for a space like theirs, especially in their financial district location. If you're looking for this kind of space, you definitely won't be disappointed with St. Andrew's Club!
