Going through passport control was quick, modern, and completely touchless, making the entire experience feel seamless and efficient. The large computerized departure board is at the main entrance over the escalators. Departure platforms are posted 30-45 prior. Make sure when you're on the platform that your train is the one you see. Three trains came and went while waiting for ours. Surprised we didn't pass thru customs coming in or leaving.

Gare de Genève Cornavin seemed like I wasn't in Switzerland anymore. It was chaotic and definitely some sketchy characters walking around asking for money. There's no police/ security. Yes, they have a lot of shops, cafes, bars and restaurants at the station. You can also catch buses here. You have to pay attention to which station you need to be catching a bus from (arranged alphabetically but not in consistent order which was frustrating). Catching a bus is nuts. There's about 6 bus lines per station with at least 10 people waiting blocking the entrance to the main train station. It's only quiet here from 9pm-8am. I've caught a bus/ train at different times of the day. The busiest is in the afternoon but it's not like you have much of a choice if you need to be somewhere.

Be prepared to walk, walk, and walk some more…read more Walk off the plane. Walk more to passport control. Walk a long line to get your passport stamped and be asked the questions as you walk through customs and into Switzerland, only to walk more to the baggage claim to where you stand a good while to greet your luggage many minutes after your plane has landed and you stress as you think the same thing I always think about, did my luggage actually make it on the plane? Then you breathe a sigh of relief as you walk again to the train station which is a solid walk from the baggage claim as you then take a train into town, or in my case, a train to Lausanne, and then walk again to the train and maybe have to stand on the train because you waited until the ultimate last minute to buy a ticket. At which point you almost wish you had someplace to sit down. Not the best way to greet people into a gorgeous country, but at least things do improve from there (and believe me, they do).

However, the bathrooms haven't been replaced and are still in the form of honey buckets. The train station is a small one, but usually has two people in the ticket area to help with any questions. There is only one ticket machine that usually has a very long line on the 2nd platform. There is a small bar/cafe also in the train station, which I haven't ever tried. Note: it is confusing and I often get tourist questions on how to find the train to St. Cergue. To get to the train that goes to St Cergue you need to cross under the train station to the other side, and then take a right and down the stairs to buy tickets and get on the little red train. Just a simple train station nothing fancy like the larger cities of Lausanne or Geneva. TIP: you can find bike rakes also under the train station on the other side. There are luggage lockers outside the train station to the right of the entrance across from the entrance to the larger Apero mini market. Near the post finance machine.

Arriving, it was fine, although the pavement / sidewalk was covered in snow and was iced over (don't believe any grit had been put down but hey, you're in the Alps). The real problem is when you're leaving Bourg-Saint-Maurice. The border control is completely understaffed. So you're left freezing outside for almost 45 minutes while waiting in line to board the train. And then when you arrive at border control, you realise, without any pre-warning, there are security measures, meaning you have to strip down (well not completely). So much time could have been saved for everyone out in the cold if there was a pre-warning that when you get to the front you'll need to take off belts, watches, etc. If you're reading train operators, you'll want to improve the service / experience.

There are a few food options right at the station, including a McDonald's and a bakery, and more options within a close walk. A downside of the station is the platforms are not well covered, so if it's very windy, it's not a pleasant wait.
