After brain surgery, I looked up at Dr. B and said, "You're my favorite person." It wasn't the drugs talking. 4 months later, he's still my favorite person. He changed my life. YEARS of dealing with misdiagnosis and neurosurgeons that didn't want to treat me, he knew what to do and within a month of meeting this fantastic, knowledgeable, easy-going man, I was at St. John's undergoing surgery. The staff there is top notch. My nurses were angels on Earth...but the most important part was Dr. B. He is calming. I knew from the moment I met him that everything was going to be okay, and if you're going into brain surgery---that feeling of contented relaxation isn't common. I had zero fears. I was positive that his skill would guide me. My issue was a PINEAL CYST---and folks---there are very few options for getting these maniacal bastards removed. Dr. B preserves the pineal gland and watching others recover vs. my recovery---mine was a breeze. I was up and going and back to NORMAL in 2 months. Dr. Barkhoudarian saved my life! He and Dr. Kelly fenestrated a left-hemisphere grapefruit-sized brain cyst, causing midline shift into the right hemisphere, causing my body to shut down. A little over 2 months ago I was diagnosed with a meningioma tumor which was located between my brain and skull. To say I was terrified would be an understatement! I was recommended to Saint John's Medical Center at the John Wayne Cancer Institute. There I met neurosurgeon Dr. Barkhoudarian. His easygoing manner and genuine concern for my health and welfare was very comforting. He diligently explained the MRI results with me, and the characteristics of the meningioma tumor. I was overjoyed to learn that 90%+ of these tumors are benign, although as the tumor grows it can cause serious health complications. The decision was made to excise the tumor as soon as possible. All of Dr. Barkhoudarian's colleagues and support staff at Saint John's Medical Center were so incredibly supportive and accommodating!! I cannot find words enough to praise their care for me and my health. I literally felt as if I were a beloved family member in their eyes. The staff went the extra step to "squeeze" my scheduled surgery early, so I could take care of this before the Christmas holidays. During the almost 6 hour surgery, the surgical nurse kept my boyfriend updated and informed about my condition and progress. Dr. Barkhoudarian, himself met with my boyfriend at the conclusion of the surgery and explained the procedure and recovery details. No one ever expects to be diagnosed with bleeding on the brain and require emergency surgery. But that is what happened to me. I was fortunate to get Dr. Barkhoudarian as my surgeon and guardian angel. I was understandably concerned about having neurosurgery and was resistant at first. I had a clival chordoma removed many years ago, and when massive head/neck pain returned recently I went searching for answers. The first neurosurgery group that I saw was SURE that my new pain wasn't related to what appeared (on the MRI) to be a remnant of my clival chordoma that appeared to have grown. Thus they didn't recommend surgery, and if I insisted, they would have removed it through the mouth...which is a horrible recovery. So...fully discouraged with the prior groups lack of answers, we found Dr. Barkhoudarian and Dr. Griffeths through recommendations from the Chordoma foundation. After reviewing my MRIs and CAT scans, Dr. B was confident that the tumor had to be removed, and would help me return to my normal-ish life. So, we decided to go forward with the surgery with Dr. B. We were thrilled that the endoscopic procedure that he's an expert in promised to be much less invasive than the trans-Oral approach (slitting the back of the throat). This was the best decision I've ever made. The procedure was less painful than having a cavity filled. I had very minor sinus pain for about 10 days. I was only in the hospital one night! With my previous transOral surgery with the previous neurosurgery group, I was in the hospital 15 days, and was in horrible pain for the first 7 after surgery. I've been super happy to have found Dr. Barkhoudarian. He's very easy to talk to and did a fantastic job helping me get back to life! read more

It is hard to put into words how wonderful Dr. Barkhoudarian is both as a brilliant surgeon and a fine person. From the day of my first online inquiry that was sent to his practice, to the final visit with him and his staff after surgery, I was blown away by the kindness and compassion of this man and his team. Rather than answering my request for a 2nd opinion by email and a request for money up front, Dr. Barkhoudarian picked up the telephone and called me. He spent the time listening to the circumstances of my diagnosis of an Olfactory Groove Meningioma, gave me great insight and information about my options, and offered to review my MRI's. He even got involved in the upload process when it didn't work the first time and had a software technician call me who logged in remotely and accomplished the data transfer. Once Dr. Barkhoudarian reviewed the films he called again and we discussed my options. I received two other opinions from other well qualified neurosurgeons but made the decision that this was my doctor and his team quickly jumped into action to help me get surgery scheduled and arrangements made. We are from the other side of the US so the prospect of flying back and forth for brain surgery was a little daunting but we made the right decision by 110%. Everything that I was told was absolutely "spot on" and I am so grateful to him, Dr. Kelly, and the rest of the Pacific Neuroscience team.
