I discovered that I've been missing out on the best popcorn ever! The reason I could not give it five stars was that it did not hold up very well in the bags it was sold in. After receiving a coupon from our double decker bus tour for a small bag of Garrett's popcorn, we decided to go check it out cuz hey, it was free. I almost turned around and left when I saw the line slowly snaking inside the small store, but my boyfriend convinced me to stay. I owe him one for that. I like popcorn, but this is no ordinary popcorn. We got a bag of the cheese and caramel popcorn mix and like everyone else, I was pretty skeptical. But once you start, you can't stop. I guess I was lucky because on a Saturday afternoon there was no one inside this particular Garrett's. We tried the cheese flavor by itself and I reeeallly liked it! I love cheese so my opinion is definitely biased. The pecan flavor was just okay IMO. I couldn't really taste the pecans but I still got a small bag for the SO since he loves 'em. I tried the cheese by itself and it was really good... but holy crap was the Chicago Mix amazing!! I didn't try it til I got home and I'm glad I didn't pull out the bag on the flight because it wouldn't have made it. I really don't like popcorn much, except when I'm at a movie, and if, on rare occasion, I pick some up from Garrett's. I always get the cheddar/caramel mix, the smallest you can get (I think a 'medium', cuz they don't do the mix in 'small') and it's plenty for one or even two people. It's delicious, and likely mega-fattening, you don't want to eat this stuff every day. The only downsides, other than that, are that it is a little pricey for popcorn, and the lines, at certain times, can be ridiculous (I waited an hour in line, seriously, for a tin of this stuff around Christmas--makes a great gift, but still). If you do buy a tin as a gift, be assured that because of the turnover, it will at least be fresh, unlike some other popcorn-tin things at Walgreen's or a grocery store. read more

I wasn't aware that the Garrett Popcorn shop was a well known fixture of Chicago. Well I love popcorn and had to stop by to give it a try. Since I'm not a sweettooth in any way I tend to drift towards the butter and cheese flavors and they did not disappoint. I was told they also sell their popcorn in various tin sizes and ship to your house as well. I'm sure that'll suffice but nothing beats having it hot and fresh from the store. read more

On 9/03/2011 I purchased 2 Jumbo Chicago Mix, and a small at the Navy Pier shop. I spent 35.66. Very disappointed because I received popcorn with barely any cheese, and the caramel was spongy. I am really considering never buying their popcorn again and trying Kernel Fabyan's Gourmet Popcorn Shoppe. Living in Chicago most of my life, I take all my out of town guests to Garrett's. I bought it for friends that were visiting and one to send to a friend recovering from surgery. I have always been a fan, even taking the train downtown just to purchase their popcorn. Okay, this one is not about the food but about the service. I work at a hotel nearby as a group concierge. One of my clients asked me to help her find a local number for Garrett's as she wanted to place a kind of a large order for delivery the next morning. After searching and failing, I offered to walk to the Garretts on Randolph about a block and a half away from us and place her order for her. When I got there, Kierra, the shift leader explained that the online items could only be ordered online or through their 888 number (from which we hadn't received a call back). Considering the deadline we were dealing with, Kierra didn't wait for me to ask her to help me find a solution. She went into resolution mode right away and helped me come up with a viable solution that was actually better for the client in terms of product gross AND in cost! She was quick, helpful and ready to "find a way!" Garrett's, I'm blasting this great experience on as much social media as I can find. The online customer service was terrible. Do not buy their back to school special or the Anniversary special. I purchased several tin cans of the Chicago mix for individuals and one for myself. The quality of popcorn is terrible. One tin had broken pieces of popcorn all throughout the can. The other tin was majority Carmel corn just a few cheese popcorn not the Chicago mix. So, I decided called the customer service line spoke with Ken Morales, the manager for custom service he was not helpful in assisting me. (I actually had taken pictures and sent them to him also by the way - so he could see majority of it was just Carmel and the broken pieces.) Only indicated that he could mail me a UPS return sticker to send back. So I could put the tin can of popcorn back in a box mail can once he sent me a UPS sticker via email to put on the box. In order to get the refund. "He was concerned I might consume the popcorn and he needed the tin back. As I suggested to him the inconvenience of having to stick the label back in a box call or go to UPS to return the popcorn obviously did make sense. What was more disturbing the lack of the concern to address to customers dissatisfaction was not an issue. This is a good example of poor quality control and not good customer service. I have been a long time time Garrett lover but no longer? I am not happy nor will be buying your online again!! Maybe in Vegas at the store I might visit but never online.
