My friend suggested a stop here and I was kinda meh about the idea, but we'd parked in the garage for MCA so we stopped in. I'm glad she talked me into it because their store has some fantastic stuff. I loved walking around and browsing... the store is really big. I thought it was just the first floor but there's an entire second floor that's even larger. That second floor has a ton of children's stuff; books, toys, stuffed animals, art, and so on. There are also lots of books for adults, and cards, and jewelry, and t-shirts, and so many things. I bought several books for my little one, and there are some toys I think she'd like that I may pick up another time and some really cute stuffed animals as well. I'm not sure if the woman that greeted us was a docent or a paid staff member but she was so welcoming. She's the one who pointed us to the second floor that we didn't know existed and let us know they had kid stuff. Then she welcomed us back when we got downstairs, and told us about the MCA kids days and said she couldn't wait to see us again. read more

I stopped by on Tuesday August 27, 2019 after attending Tuesdays on The Kern Terrace featuring Isaiah Collier and the Chosen Few Live Jazz Concert! I entered the MCA Store through the interior entryway on the interior of the museum-therefore it was considered the 2nd Floor! Amazing Offerings: 2nd Floor: There is a huge table area dedicated to "local" Chicago Art and Foodie and History books.....so exciting! There are adorable children's and adult art books, notecards, toys, and my favorite thing for babies and toddlers were the adorable llama knit slippers and plus bunny rabbits with long ears. Really liked this little store spread out over two floors of the Museum of Contemporary Art. They have an eclectic selection of gifts that are sure to tickle your interest...If you like contemporary art, you'll like the gift shop. What surprised me was the selection of notions and gifts...most stuff that you either haven't seen or haven't heard of elsewhere. They just have stuff that is unique and different. I suspect you can find something here that will be a neat surprise for your friends and family. If you visit the museum, make sure to stop in here. read more

I said it before and I'll say it again. THANK YOU MCA. You have plagued my life with multitudes of kidrobot designs and labbits galore. If I hadn't been here, I would have never bought my first labbit and gotten pulled into the craze that kidrobot has inspired today. Other than crazy fun kidrobot / Japanese pop-culture toys, this store holds hordes of books on every subject art and contemporary society related. This store is very reasonably priced (read expensive kidrobot labbit story above ...) and have some of the newest, coolest toys around. No wonder people are set on buying Christmas presents for their friends and families here. I would too! ... if I didn't hog all of it for myself. How can you not like this store? I have bought so many quirky gifts for my people from here that they just know the source. At this point, my kitchen is full of MCA goods but I can't use my pig cover because it would get bad. I do use the toothpick holder and the chain wine bottle holder. They have excellent coffee table discussion items, too. The online store has a lot more options because the museum store isn't big enough for everything. It has a good selection of rotating goods. I totally have to agree with other reviewers; this is the best store I visited during my entire trip to Chicago! Located just a block off the Magnificent Mile (past the fire station) and attached to the Museum of Modern Art. This is the most unique store you will visit! I'm a huge fan of Umbra, Kikkerland, Poppin, Fred & Friends, etc and this place was an absolute dream! They had a ton of modern accessories and home decor by the brands I love as well as some I had never seen before. My favorite thing in the entire store was a pillow shaped like a cactus. Amazing! Oh, and the pen shaped like a blade of grass. Hilarious. Downstairs mainly consists of home decor, shirts, a clearance section, bags and jewelry, kitchenware, etc and upstairs is mainly books with some cards and a children's section. Definitely a must see while in Chicago! Prices weren't too bad either. You can enter downstairs from the street (no museum admission necessary) or from upstairs if you are already inside the museum. read more

All my friends and family members will be getting CHristmas present from this store. I will be buying myself a Christmas present - or 3- from this store. Upstairs has a fantastic card selection in particular; the book selection was interesting to me, as I'm not a big art buff, but it didn't look enormous... then again, I'm spoilt by seeing thousands of books like this in one place because it's the family business. I did spend twenty minutes looking through a retrospective of Marc Jacobs advertising imagery while seriously considering buying a cushion in the shape of a dunkin' donut (it had sprinkles, people!) The point is, there is something for everyone. Some of the jewellery is heart breakingly expensive, some of it heart breakingly beautiful, some of it heartbreakingly crazy. When these 3 things align, I am in retail heaven. My mum bought a cheese grater in the shape of a mouse and a post-it note holder in the shape of a moose, and was ecstatic. My brother inspected Gloomy bears and crazy Japanese toys for a full half hour. Like I said, something for everyone! read more

They have a lot of super cool stuff here. Prices are on the expensive side, but I think its worth it since everything is so unique and you cant find it at other stores. My cousin bought a floor mat that I thought was really unique. I came in here today in search for it but it wasn't here anymore!!! Lesson learned! If you think something looks great, just buy it! Anyone who who shops Michigan Ave. for gifts would do very well to walk a couple blocks down Chicago Ave. and shop here. I buy a lot of books from the upstairs bookstore, some really unique stuff that is hard to find anywhere else in the city, or even on the internet. It's a nice way of contributing to the museum by shopping here, as well. Like Andrea pointed out, the staff is very nice and helpful, a nice change from the cliched hipster attitude you get in similar shops out in the neighborhoods. Prices for some of the items seem a little high, but it helps to keep in mind that many of them are limited artist editions with secondary market value, and often go up in value in the future. Some great stuff for kids, too--yet another reason to avoid the Disney store. read more

A hidden gem and a great place to come for a unique gift. While it is filled with a million things you would never NEED, they are all things you would love to have. Jewelry, movies, books, decor, toys, children's gifts, and more. Everything inside is so interesting. Just be sure you don't miss the second floor! Okay, one question... why have I never been in this store?! I've lived here for 3 years! I went in over the weekend, and I loved it. I could've spent so much more time in there, but I had impatient family members waiting on me. This place has two levels of awesome. Going to be such a great place to buy holiday presents this year. The second level is full of toys and books that I swear were meant for me. I bought a Kidrobot toy that is a pair to one I already own. I have not seen this toy in stores, or for retail price, since last summer, at least. So seeing it in stock, and buying it, totally made my day. The staff were really helpful and friendly as well. I would definitely recommend checking this place out if you are into art or any sort of quirky trinkets. read more

one of my favorite places to shop, browse, get lost. it's such an awesome store, great for getting gifts for the person who has everything (because trust me, they don't have a string doll keychain or a bag made out of rubber bands). upstairs - you will find sweet books on artsy topics, architecture, design, fashion, music, film. i have gotten some great books here and a few that inspire me in my work as an ad-peep. you'll also find hard-to-find-anywhere music, cards, notebooks and figurines. downstairs - very cool Ts (original, few made), artsy jewelry, bags, homewares, trinkets, etc. also, random but i have to comment on this - the bags they give you are so ultra-sturdy and have a cool design on them, you'll want to reuse them again and again...and you won't want to put your clothes to give-away to the salvation army in it! read more

I love art museum stores-- and I am a huge fan of the MoMa store but while the MCA store has a really great collection of art books upstairs (not too mention great videos and mags) I am less impressed with the downstairs shop. One pet peeve is that they have some nice looking chairs scattered around but don't actually sell them-- you can't even order them! Second: most of the brands and items they carry can be found in other stores in Chicago. They have some cute bags and accessories and some cute kids stuff, perhaps for holiday giving but make a trip for the cool art books and the art-- otherwise, save your $. read more
