The City Of El Monte Historical Society Museum" is TRULY a hidden gem that not many know about…read more It's situated just north of El Monte High school on Tyler Ave and right across the street from Arceo Park. I've been there many times and can NEVER get enough of the rich history that includes pictures, news articles, items and wonderful stories from its curator Mrs. Donna Crippen. I believe this building was once the public library up until it was transformed to a museum sometime in the 1960's. This place is wonderful to look at, be in and most importantly learn in. ?The staff really knows its facts! I believe they offer tours from Mrs. Crippen and the volunteering Docent's; who also do a marvelous job! To get the most and appreciate all its unique history, you may plan on going a couple of days to really understand why the city of El Monte is what it is. Thanks to the pioneers who came before us. What I really appreciate; and I'm sure those who have larger families or even students from local schools is the fact that it's free admission, but they kindly accept donations. So please feel free to support this awesome, generous little gem of the wonderful city that is El Monte. P.S. It's adjacent to the Jack Crippen community center.

This festival was smaller than Monterey Park's festival and, unfortunately, was only a 1 day event on Saturday 2/29/26. There was a small handful of food and arts & crafts vendors. The rest of the vendors were businesses like Wendy's, Raising Cane, some health clinics and Wyndham timeshare. Starbucks handed out free coffee, so that was nice! I would love to see more local businesses show up like they did for Monterey Park's festival because the discounts on grocery items and snacks were decent. Will be back next year!

We arrived 30 minutes prior to the official start of the fair and we located street parking in front of the fair. There were many food, health & wellness, & knickknack vendors set up in multiple booths. There was also a large stage set up in the center of the fair which offered continuous entertainment. The event was very well attended and everyone appeared to be having a great time including my family and I.

Of course if you…read moreknow anything about Vincent Price the actor, you also may know that he loved art and for many years encouraged people to get involved with art. He wasn't kidding, either. He and his wife Mary put together a museum that is on the campus of East LA College. This is a very active venue, though hardly overcrowded. On the afternoon I was there, a workshop for younger people to explore art was being held in the same area as one of their current exhibits. (I should have suspected as much as a 10 (?) year old was leaving with a somewhat water-soaked shirt). As the friendly person at the main desk assured me, the workshop would not interfere with my enjoying the art. True! There are three floors at the VPAM. On the first floor were some indigenous artists (some local, some not). Always timely, the voices here brought a nice variety in their work. On the second floor, there were artists with perhaps a more global outlook. You might even say that the art was (respectfully) confrontational. Meaning: I did not feel attacked or anything. Rather, I thought the work invites some real dialogue. There was a film, for instance, from the POV of a salmon trying to reconcile its life and its place in the world since a big dam has since interrupted their lives. There were also some colorful prints questioning the value of mineral mining. These works succeeded IMO by their beauty and skillful presentation that also asked questions that people may not think too much about. On the third floor is the Permanent Collection. Some donated by Vincent Price, but many others contributed, too. 'Form and Function in the Ancient Americas' 'showcases the wide range of Indigenous civilizations'. With many great examples, there is plenty to check out and enjoy without being overwhelmed by 'too much of a good thing'. One of the things I also enjoyed about VPAM is that it wasn't a huge undertaking to explore. Perfect for an hour or two, depending on you. So grateful for the helpful folks who help run the Museum. I look forward to returning sometime in the Spring, when apparently a collab with LACMA will open. There is also very much a connection with the Getty as they have sponsored much here, too. It's all free. Park in the nearby College lot as the regular lot behind the VPAM is under construction.

The history of the LAPD is vast and at the Los Angeles Police Museum you get a lot of it and more…read more There's quite a bit to take in on various floors, from the moment you start your adventure into this historic site and museum in Greater LA's Highland Park neighborhood. Located on York Blvd between Aldama Street and Branch Street, LAPM has a good size lot as well as street parking available. They're open Wednesday through Saturday from 10:30 am until 3:30 pm. Occasionally they have some additional closures, aside from Sundays through Tuesdays, including holidays and special events. Their Instagram stories and post usually note this best, but they do make updates to the website as well. LAPM was founded in the late 80s (1989) under its former name LAPHS (Los Angeles Police Historical Society) and is dedicated to housing, informing and displaying a vast collection of Los Angeles' law enforcement history and present. The building itself is a registered National Historic Landmark inside the restored 1925 Highland Park Police Station. I learned, recalled, and took in a lot of helpful information. From the Battle of North Hollywood in the late 90s (1997, which I vaguely remember as a pre-teen living in Los Angeles) to the history of the first African American police officer of the LAPD Robert William Stewart, hired in 1886. It can be a lot to take in, but also more than informative and eye opening. The layout is easy to navigate, the details, images, videos and displays are well kept and they have elevators as well as smooth floors for wheelchairs, strollers, etc. They have memberships at different tiers that include anytime admission as well as general, seniors, students (including college) and children admission pricing ranging from free (fo children 5 and under) to $10 (ages 21 to 61). Everyone working here was nothing but kind and personable and since I purchased tickets online all I had to do was show my confirmation. They have a gift shop that's pretty neat. I got a new pin to add to my vest and had the perfect company to enjoy a day at the LA Police Museum with. Note: the lower/basement level is for personal (meeting rooms) and the offices to the left near the gift shop as well as in the main front half of the entrance are for employees. If the doors are locked you can ring the bell or knock.

Despite the short time and on a hot day, I'd say it was a sucess, given he absolutely loved it and constantly continues to rave to the family about how much fun he had. He loved putting mommy and daddy in jail. Closing and opening the jail cells was an absolute joy and he loved saying "stop right there" like Labrador Dog followed by a bewildering "you're under arrest"!!!!!! Every time he threw me in jail and closed the cell, his little eyes glistened with savory wicked intent. After visiting the interrogation room, which I must say was my favorite due to the meticulosly landscaped mural, he hurriedly escorted us to his most precious discovery.... the police collection of vehicles, found on the back end outside of the museum. He enjoyed getting inside the helicopter and engaged in lenghty "make believe". Tried the motorcycles and engaged in constant pursuit of thieves! Rode the LAPD van and arrested/locked both mommy and daddy. Oh boy, this kid sure had fun and I enjoyed seeing his little face overjoyed without having staff constantly stating he could not get in. Thank you for having a space where kids can be kids without constant restraint. I did see some trash that I am assuming other folk might have left behind and the police cars were pretty dirty. Maybe they can be protected with car covers? We were also almost overcharged when my toddler was being taken for older kid. Despite these minor things, we enjoyed this museum and wish we had a bit more time to read the cases and history.

Before you go here, understand what this is. If you're looking for a big museum with a focus on all things Western, go to the Autry Museum of the American West (Griffith Park). This is a historic building owned by the Autry, which still retains some of the Native American artifacts originally exhibited and stored here (others have already been relocated to either the Griffith Park museum or their research building in Burbank). There are only two rooms (one with Pueblo pottery and the other chronicling the museum's history and showcasing a few examples of Mayan and Incan art). Supposedly, the Southwest Museum is LA's oldest museum. It was opened as the Southwest Museum of the American Indian in 1907 (downtown location) by archaeologist and journalist Charles Lummis, to preserve and document the indigenous cultures of the Southwest. Lummis ran the Southwest Society (the western branch of the Archaeological Institute of America). The museum moved to its current building in 1914 (constructed for this purpose). In 2003, financial challenges pushed the museum to merge with the Autry. There is quite a bit of controversy involving the merger and the subsequent decisions made by the Autry. The facility has remained as a conservation site, with visiting hours only on Saturdays. You can read more criticism at savesouthwestmuseum.com, run by Friends of the Southwest Museum. According to the group, the merger would ideally have revitalized the museum instead of limiting visitation and transferring parts of the collection to other locations. Currently, the building is for sale. Naturally, this will invite more criticism as the collection will be completely separated from the historic building. I don't want to blame the Autry as I don't understand the financial issues at play here. I don't know why the museum wasn't revitalized after the merger (it's unfortunate that it wasn't). I also don't doubt that it costs a lot to keep this building running (and they have two other facilities in Los Angeles). Of course, keeping the collection at the building is ideal. But if it's draining the Autry's resources and they have two other buildings to house the artifacts? I'm sure people will chide this cowboy-oriented institution for completely subsuming an institution that focuses on indigenous culture. However, it seems like they saved this building from closure in the first place and invested a lot of money to keep it running. It also seems like the Autry has committed to furthering indigenous voices in their programming (thus not only focusing on cowboy history). It's not ideal to let go of the historic building but if they can wholeheartedly commit to preserving indigenous art and make room in their facilities for these stories? It might be the best case scenario. Letting go of a building that's draining resources makes sense, from an administrative and financial perspective (especially after Covid). Hypothetically, if there were a donor or buyer that offered to finance the retention of the building with the artifacts and the Autry declined? That'd be a different story. In the end, I hope they can find ways to honor this site's legacy and adequately incorporate the indigenous art and history.

The convenient parking lot is situated in the back, but it's best to start your trip by parking on the Museum Drive. Then take a quick photo in front of the museum entrance before walking thru the long tunnel access. The whole place is small and easily navigatable in about 30 minutes. The FIRST FLOOR hosts some displays covering the history of the Southwest Museum institution as founded by archeologist Charles Lummis. Few modern art draperies hang in the inside for comfort viewing as you walk through the museum. The SECOND FLOOR is currently displaying a ceramic art exhibition showcasing Pueblo art and other crafted items from South West Native Americans. There were plenty of Navajo pottery and other figurines on display dated over a span of a few centuries. The free admission on Saturday makes this a great destination to pair with the nearby Heritage Square Museum, or even perfect to go right before heading to the Autry main campus. The walking distance from the Gold Line Station makes this museum an easy and convenient stop! Don't forget to bring some snacks and enjoy the fantastic view of Mount Washington at the top of the museum grounds!
