I started at HHMA (for short) last year and I have to say that I feel happy I found this halua!!…read moreWhen I started my search for a halua, I Yelped halua groups near my area...and came across HHMA's page. Just a note, I am an absolute beginner and have not done hula in the past. So, I was a bit intimidated and overwhelmed with all the searching and visiting. I didn't find much on here, but I decided to contact them anyways. I heard back and I was invited to come check out a class. I felt so welcomed by everyone's warm and smiling faces. I really felt the aloha spirit here! I immediately felt some sort of connection, and a sense that it was already my home. And honestly, I don't have many other haluas to compare to since I only got into contact with two other places. But I stopped my search and decided to join on the spot! So let me break it down!! HHMA has open enrollment once a year...usually in July for people interested in the halua. It goes on until about September. Everyone who is new to the halua, must go through one year of the beginners group (papa lehua). No matter how long you have been dancing, this is the protocol! In this year, you will learn about the beautiful Hawaiian culture/ language, chants, songs, and dances. And you will work up to your graduation, which you will perform all that you have learned in your year. And after you graduate from the beginners class, the class gets separated and placed into the other classes based on your age/ dancing level. And just so you know, they do offer a ukulele class as well! But that's a whole other topic! Here's my personal hula journey, I actually just graduated from the beginners class. And in my beginners class, there are people who have been dancing for many years. And beginners with no real dancing experience like me. And we all learn to dance in sync with each other which I think is pretty cool!! And reflecting back from the first day I started, I have learned so much and have come a very long way! I am having such an amazing time getting to know my hula brothers and sisters. I really have bonded with everyone..we practice, laugh together, and support one another. Coming to class is my highlight of the week! It is so much more than a halua and we are really an ohana (family)..we have ceremonies, events, and potluck parties. Lastly, Kumu Nani (hula teacher) is very reputable in the hula community, so I really feel honored to be learning from someone so prestigious. Kumu is very kind, passionate, takes her hula very seriously, and really dedicated to the HHMA ohana!! Shout out to all her board members too they are all so helpful and will give you love, support and all constructive criticism to be your best!! The dance studio is spacious, clean, and homely. It is located in a small plaza across the street from the cemetery. I am so blessed to have found HHMA. I HIGHLY HIGHLY recommend anyone curious or interested to come check this place out! You will not be disappointed!

Review #919 2025-096…read more My son is taking Cantonese 2 at South Bay Chinese School & placed 1st on 10/11/25 Penmanship Competition, earning an entry to compete in the 11/16/25 Southern California Council of Chinese Schools 2025 Fall Academic Competition (南加州中文學校聯合會 2025 秋季學術比賽) in Beginner Level Penmanship (硬筆寫字 初級組) held at Arcadia High School. He also placed penmanship previously: 1st in 2023 - 2024 school year & 4th in 2024 - 2025 but I missed the emails to confirm for the regional competition. In his 1st regional competition, M place 6th (廖文凱 硬筆寫字 初級組 第六名)! \ (^ o ^) / The Southern California Council of Chinese Schools 2025 Fall Academic Competition Awards Ceremony (南加州中文學校聯合會 2025 秋季學術比賽頒獎典禮) was held on 11/30/25 at the Culture Center of Taipei Economic & Culture Office in Los Angeles. (洛杉磯華僑文教服務中心). It was quite a production... taking almost 2 hours! I'm so proud of my l'il one. I believe he was the only Cantonese student awardee in the ceremony (though I did see an awardee from the Chinese School of San Diego, not sure if the student was in the Mandarin or Cantonese program but it's a higher probability that the student is in their Mandarin program), even more proud that he's trying to continue to learn about his heritage & representing Cantonese since it's so difficult to find a Chinese school that teaches Cantonese. Due to the influx of 300+ people attending the ceremony, their private lot was jam packed but we arrived early enough to find free street parking. I also found out from our school that the Office was giving away books to attendees on a first come first serve basis; I picked up a Chinese chicken recipe book that provided the recipes in English & Chinese, & M grabbed a couple of Chinese comic books (we may need to use Google Translate's camera to try & "read" them). I'm not familiar with CCTECO, but there's a lot of art displayed in their lobby. There's also several conference rooms for meetings, & a large auditorium (where the awards ceremony was held). The Office is located on Telstar Ave. in a somewhat isolated part of El Monte. I was surprised to learn from their website of the original Culture Center in Los Angeles Chinatown (I born & raised in Chinatown & don't remember seeing this center), & the Overseas Community Affairs Council (OCAC) relocated the center to Santa Ana in 09/2005 to serve Orange County. I'm not likely to visit Culture Center of Taipei Economic & Culture Office in L.A. again unless my son continues to compete in Chinese school competitions.

I've also come here for multiple music performances, attended leadership conferences, joined TAP or TJCC hosted events here, and much more. You can also renew your Taiwan passport here - they're really helpful and can also answer any questions via phone call (but they might speak limited English).

Very kid friends with awe sensory activities and book reading groups. I recently started school. I enjoy a different scene from my warm bedroom especially now in the summer. Studying at this library is not as pleasant as it used to be. It smells really bad in specific areas due to many homeless people. They take up all the study tables and quiet corners. Most of them sit for hours on their phone. Some Sleep for hours. It's not as quiet as other libraries but it's quiet enough to study my online classes. I'm a bit disappointed with how the remodeled. It feels more modern than homie which is no issue just not my vibe. I don't remember the library staff allowing homeless people in when I was a kid unless they looked somewhat well kept and with better hygiene. Anyways if it weren't for the homeless people and smell this library would still be my top favorite. I prefer the signal hill library now but still Billie Jean is a close way from where I live Oh and signal hill library is open on Mondays! Which is great because I study everyday of the week. I don't mean to be mean towards homelessness people. I agree there should be more done but one reality is that not all of them care to work and most are doing drugs. I can see that being of conflict in assisting them with stability. Nevertheless, I will always remember the good memories I had at this library. I practically grew up here.

I no longer live in the state, but visit every few weeks and make sure to visit the gardens every time. I've painted these gardens over the years and will continue to do so. My favorite gardens are the Rose garden, the Japanese garden and the Chinese garden. This is the perfect date spot as well as a perfect place to walk in the morning amongst nature before the day gets too hot. The children's garden will entertain the littles and they even have a water feature on the hot days. The art pieces throughout the museums are not only beautiful but historical and should not be missed. There is a great coffee shop to grab a cup for your walk and a great gift shop at the exit. There are a couple of quick food options as well. Parking is plentiful- but make reservations! Verdict: perfection- everyone must visit this lovely land at least once in their lifetime.

After struggling to find parking, we were surprised as we were immersed in a Dia de Los Muertos celebration. From face painting to sugar skull models to churros to shirts and stickers, this festival was a culinary and sensory feast. The folklorico dancers were a treat for my kids and the classic cars were a treat for everyone. My boys and I were especially proud of grandpa's Merc on display with Uncle Julio and Fernando's pics and great grandma and great granpa:s pics on the "hood ofrenda." We spent the better part of the day here and, while many of the food and trinkets were on the expensive side, the atmosphere and cultural immersion was priceless. Will we do it again? My 9 year old already volunteered to sit with grandpa next year. Only next time it will be the '54 or maybe the' 38 or the Nomad or the Merc... Sigh... It'll be one of them and the experience will be great.

The Victorian houses are beautiful and all the venders, scare actors and staff were friendly and accommodating. I was surprised to see Nikk Alcaraz giving out candy and signing his book, Peculiar Baking! I'm a big fan of his so I had to buy a copy of his cook book for my girlfriend. There were many photo ops, food vendors, atmospheric music, trick or treating and a few haunted mazes. The only thing lacking was parking. I recommend using a Ride Share company rather than struggling to park in their tiny parking lot or getting VIP parking. Today (Sunday, 4/26) is the last day until next year. If you're a fan of Halloween (the holiday and the movies) I highly recommend attending this swap meet.

I was told by Scott who was sitting by bench next to her who was nice and friendly and if it wasn't for him I'd missed this gallery. She needs to be replaced with someone more bubbly or with a more a positive attitude energy.
