Great beer selection. Kind of dive beer store on the side of the highway. Not much to be said beyond that

Oh, Gary's. Definitely don't judge a book by it's cover when it comes to this establishment, as they actually are doing things well. Gary's provides an abundant of craft beer options to take home, for decent prices. They even have some wine selections and mixers. I typically frequent this spot when I am looking to make some mimosas, as you can get Prosecco and juice for $6. How can you go wrong? At the end of the day, it's a beverage store. They are doing what they are meant to do well, and honestly, the prices are really decent. Is it pretty? No. Are beer distributors supposed to be pretty? Not in my world. Gary's has a lot of beer and really good prices. The staff is a bit rough around the edges, but they were friendly and they brought the 8 cases that I bought to the car for me - even though the guy was suffering - it was only 8 in the morning and he hadn't finished celebrating St. Paddy's day until about 5 hours earlier. This is not a place to come to brouse and discuss the nuances between various craft brews. It is a place to come when you know what you want and you want to pay as little as possible. I called ahead two days before and they had my order waiting for me. This will be my regular stop to stock up on beer from now on. read more

Looks like Gary's Beverages is moving to a new location just off the Portsmouth Circle. From what I hear, Portsmouth wants to build a garage at their current location so unfortunately the best location Gary's could find was off the circle. Though the size is smaller, they are still trying to hold true to their name and keep it a specialty beverage store keep as many varieties they can as well as accepting custom orders for anything you can't find on their shelves; assuming its available in NH. The new location has been renovated and is much more well lit and organized allowing me to easily search and find the beers I was looking for. If craft beers are your thing, or just awesome prices for beers in general, well Gary's always aims to please better their large variety as well as their discounted prices; especially their rotating fire sale. read more

This is a truly funky store. Great for beer and wine and tobacco (if you're a smoker). We've gotten some really good deals there, especially if we're having a party or friends over. I highly recommend them (and go in the back room - yes, you're allowed in there) for more great deals. They are also the only folks I know who still carry Michelob Ultra Amber (my fave beer) read more

If you need to buy a case of beer (or a few bottles of wine) at a good price for a party in downtown Portsmouth, this is the closest place. The aisles are narrow because there's a huge selection and I don't think the prices would be much cheaper anywhere else. If you go on the day before a party day (4th of July, labor day, etc.), expect to wait in line. read more

HORRIBLE SERVICE BY THE OWNER. I would never patron this place again, and would encourge everyone to stay away. We got two kegs for a party and were given the wrong tap - it wouldn't function at all. As all our guests were arriving for the party, we ran to the local convenience store to grab cases of beer. When we went to return the kegs, the OWNER told us we should have left in the middle of the party, driven the one hour round trip to the store, and he would have fixed it that night. Since we didn't do that, he told us "too bad" and wouldn't give us a refund. He was a total jerk and AWFUL businessman. Don't give him your business. read more

I like Gary's. They have great prices on beers but unfortunately I think I just figured out partially why. Just bought two cases of beer yesterday and for kicks opened up the case in the car to check the "best-by" date. Turns out it was almost three months ago, January 2015. I figured they'd have no problem exchanging the beers or giving a refund, or something. Instead both employees told me sorry, they didn't know what to do or say. No refunds or exchanges. Prices and selection cannot be beat but I'd recommend double checking the expiry dates before purchasing beers from Gary's. read more

NO MORE BUSINESS FROM ME Saturday night I bought an $8 six pack. When my girlfriend and I went to drink it we both thought something wasn't right. The expiration date for the beer was six months prior. I returned to the shop today, asked to exchange the four remaining for something that wasn't spoiled. The employee told me there was nothing he could do for me. When I insisted there was, I was told to return Monday morning @ 8am to speak with the owner as he was the only one who could authorize an exchange. Oddly enough, I have to work tomorrow morning and can't take the day off to try to attempt to get my $8 back from these cheapskates. Say goodbye to a ten year customer Gary's. Your prices have risen, your selection has diminished, and you are jerks. Market Basket has a good selection and better prices. I will take my business there. read more

Yes they have an AWESOME beer selection and when you need a keg, they can get it quick. HOWEVER they have the WORST customer service, and the WORST attitude when you call. No website, no beer listing and pricing online, nor will they fax it. They will make me drive 45 minutes to look at a list, only to drive back again to get it. Cash only for kegs and deposits. I think i will be returning my keg for my deposit and will take my business else where. Somewhere with a website and a positie attitude! read more

First time going there, the cashier was pretty rude, kind of looking at me like, "WTF do you want". She had a mean look on her face. So, I ordered a keg of beer on Monday, and was told that it would be in on Thursday. So, I get a call on Thursday from them and they told me that the beer I had selected is not being distributed anymore by them. So, I'm like, why didn't you tell me this BEFORE Thursday? Not only that, I go to the store, and there is a huge line. I finally get up to the counter and they barely had ANY 1/4 kegs or half kegs. The "selection" they had was all nasty LIGHT beer. Needless to say, I will never go there again. Terrible service, unprofessional, and pretty sleazy, run down place with TERRIBLE customer service. Oh, and if you plan on purchasing a keg, you better bring cash, because they don't accept any other form of payment.... read more

Would not Refund deposit for Tap and Keg. Apparently it is "store policy" that you need to have your sales receipt in order to receive your deposit back. Although the keg still had the State paperwork on it, filled out by Gary's selling it to me, and they confirmed that the tap I was returning was in fact theirs, they still would not give me my whole deposit back. I had to argue to get the deposit for the Keg and $10 on the Tap. They essentially stole $30 from me for no good reason. When I explained that no one informed me of the receipt policy, the 2 women behind the counter were Rude and confrontational - she argued that I had been informed because it is store policy to inform customers (she wasn't there when I picked up the Keg) and threw the money at me. I know that this review isn't going to hurt Gary's business, however, if you are buying a keg from them Be very clear about what you need to get your deposit back and keep your Receipt.
