I have seen this tent many times at the Torrance farmers market, so today I decided to give it a try. Now I don't have the most expensive knives but I take good care of them. When I dropped them off the man was pleasant and seemed reliable. The price was a little steep but I thought to myself you get what you pay for and I thought he would do a good job. He also said he would have my knives sharpened in 15 minutes which was great news..... until I picked them up. I had given him four knife covers and he returned only one of them. He simply looked me in the eye and said "it was a busy day and I must have given them to someone else." He offered to pay me for the covers but I was so upset I wanted to cry and could not think straight... I had no idea how much I paid for each cover and one of them was a wedding gift. He then reached in his bag and tried to give me a cover in his backpack like that would solve the issue. Anyways that was my first and last time to this knife sharping tent. I will not go back nor will I refer Anyone I know here. Stay away. read more

I called to see about getting my scissors sharpened. I know this is a knife sharpening shop, but it was worth a shot! I got Gary on the phone and he couldn't have been any nicer. He explained to me the ins and outs of Japanese steel and why he doesn't sharpen that specific style of shear. He then dug around to find a cars of someone to recommend me to. I might as well be Edward Scissorhands what with all of the cutting, dicing and slicing I do day in and day out and while I know how to give my little fam bam of WÜSTHOF's a clean up before every use, every once in again, ya gotta sharpen those puppies up and get them back to look out fragile skin I'm comin' to slice ya order. Luckily for me, Gary's Knife Sharpening has a little spot at the Hollywood Farmers Market (Selma and Ivar) and for a mere $10 (with my chef discount), I was able to get my chef's knife, utility and pairing knife back to the level they once were. A rare 5-star review: Gary's Knife Sharpening is the perfect combination of three things I search for in my life when it comes to service: friendliness, knowledge and execution. The initial impression of Gary is the smile. I found him on the internets, and he has a video of his wife (actual) complaining about how he used to be an exec and they had "the life" until he decided he wanted to change course and become a knife sharpener! (Much to her chagrin, the video is quick to note). So, tongue planted in cheek, her story intros this video, and it segues into his knife tip: the difference between honing and sharpening. It's succinct, well defined and clear. So, you walk up to his box at the BH Farmer's market and there he is, the star of his own YouTube. He quickly looked at my knives, quoted me a price and told me that it'd be "about 20 minutes." Well, I told him, if he didn't mind the company, I'd rather watch! So we shot the shit for the entire time; he illustrated some things about my knives, sure, but we talked about music industry, his old video editing company etc. So, the friendliness and knowledge were there. All that was left was the execution. WOW. I brought 2 chef knives, a paring knife, a serrated (happy he could sharpen it), my poultry shears, and a couple other chopping knives. It wasn't just night and day. It was NIGHT AND DAY. I actually went through a couple onions and some ginger just because I could. I didn't have to saw anymore, it literally cut. straight. through. If you cook as much as I do, and use your knives regularly or often, you are crazy not to consider Gary first. I should note: I am on such a local, "mom and pop" store trip right now. I feel thrilled when I give back to the community by celebrating and supporting the local stores; stores that aren't faceless, or impersonal. Rick at the Torrance Farmer's market was great. I took in 2 kitchen knives to be sharpened but he would only do 1 of them because the other was fine. Very honest guy. He also explained how I can keep my knives sharp for a longer time. It was easy to find and the process was super fast. I went to get a lemonade and he was done before I got back. My mom has a bunch of dull knives ... So I will be seeing Rick again :) read more

What's not to love? This is good old fashioned personal service by someone who knows what they're doing. I brought 2 kitchen knives and 2 pocket knives to Gary's tent in the parking lot of Intl. Silks and Woolens on Beverly (near Beverly Center) on Friday. Gary was very nice, and told me it would be about 10 minutes to sharpen them. I visited the wacky light bulb store down the block for a few minutes, and when I got back they were done. $17 even for all 4 knives. Gary did an excellent job. All the knives are now razor sharp. I was sad at the lack of kindness Gary showed when I went to get my knives sharpened at the Mar Vista FM. Not only was his customer service lacking (maybe a bad morning?) but he completely took the grooves / teeth off of my Cutco cheese knife. Yep, polished them all off completely. A great guy with great customer service! Easy to reach on the phone and super nice, we scheduled a time for him to come to my house for a house call that same week. He was right on time, set up shop in my driveway with a professional sharpening wheel and table. He went to work quickly and was done 23 knives in about 20 minutes. With all my kitchen knives and a several friends' knives too, we easily met the $40 minimum for house calls. Thanks Gary! Everybody has an off day, but I don't like to pay for their problems. I wasted close to $200 for nothing. Gary came to the office and set up a mobile sharpening set-up. I asked him to sharpening about 20 knives and shears. They were ground so poorly was sure if I could ever bring an edge back. They were duller after Gary than they were before. Beware! I was not happy with the job done on my knives. They were not sharp and they were all scratched. I told him the next week at the farmers market about the problem and he told me my knives were probably not "high quality". He didn't even know what they were when he commented. Very rude! Went to Mar Vista location at noon, I greeted the rep of the lot and was responded with a grunt. A few seconds later he yelled I'm too busy right now, come back later. I explained no problem, I can wait. He assisted two families that walked up after me then said I'm sorry how can I help you. I explained to him my boss sent me to get the kitchens knives sharpened and to inquire information regarding mobile service because ourselves and our community restaurants need someone to come sharpen for us at least twice a month. He then became a little lighter in his mood and conversation. He explained the knives will be ready in 15 mins and told me to take a card. I returned and saw he was still working on them so I went behind his lot to wait in the shade as I saw his previous customers do. When I noticed he was done, I explained I'm ready when you are sir, he then yelled you need to come to the front! I will not do business with you behind me! I apologized and explained I'm just following a procedure I just witness him do. He continued to yell, I WILL NOT DO BUSINESS WITH YOU BEHIND ME! causing a scene. This attitude nor scene was necessary and could have been avoided with proper demeanor. No CUSTOMER should receive this foul and cruel "service". read more

I emailed Gary a while back about sharpening some knives, plane blades and chisels. He referred me to his website for locations and so I went to his popup at the Pasadena farmers market. There was another guy there was very kind, and told me couldn't do the bevel on the plane blades but he could put an edge on the chisels and sharpen the knives. I picked the knives up and took them home when I noticed he had taken a chunk ground out of the base of a Japanese chef's knife my father bought me years ago before he passed away. He also ground the edge on ka-bar down to about a 45 degree angle. It doesn't cut very well and needs a new edge. I remember the guy at the farmers market sort of whipping the knives vigorously across grinding stone and spraying sparks around, hardly the work of a "highly skilled artisan" as was promised on the website. I hate to leave a bad review but some time has passed since my experience and I'm still quite upset. I'm sure Gary knows his stuff but he should be more diligent about the people he hires to work under his company name. read more
