I emailed Gary a while back about sharpening some knives, plane blades and chisels. He referred me to his website for locations and so I went to his popup at the Pasadena farmers market. There was another guy there was very kind, and told me couldn't do the bevel on the plane blades but he could put an edge on the chisels and sharpen the knives. I picked the knives up and took them home when I noticed he had taken a chunk ground out of the base of a Japanese chef's knife my father bought me years ago before he passed away. He also ground the edge on ka-bar down to about a 45 degree angle. It doesn't cut very well and needs a new edge. I remember the guy at the farmers market sort of whipping the knives vigorously across grinding stone and spraying sparks around, hardly the work of a "highly skilled artisan" as was promised on the website. I hate to leave a bad review but some time has passed since my experience and I'm still quite upset. I'm sure Gary knows his stuff but he should be more diligent about the people he hires to work under his company name. read more

Awesome in every single respect! He did a house call to Tarzana for us. We made it a knife sharpening event by offering his services to our friends and family. He communicated beforehand, even confirming and was online. He sharpened all our knives and even gave us some guidance on cleaning and storage as he could tell we had issues. I've been trying to track Gary down for a week and a half. I have left two messages with no returned call and I went by International Silks and Woolens on Friday during his hours and he was not there. The staff at ISW were very unhelpful and unwilling to help me figure anything out, i.e. I called first to verify he was there (after the two non-returned calls). They said he's in the parking lot if he's there, but we can't go look. So I drove over any way. There was no Gary, though the man in the parking lot said he should be there. He was more concerned with making sure I didn't park in a certain parking spot. Guess I need to find someone else to sharpen my knives and scissors. read more

I hadn't had my Wusthoff knives sharpened in years, so I was actually excited about getting them sharpened. I know, sounds a little geeky, huh? Well, my good friend who works full-time as a chef told me about Gary. She was raving about how well he sharpens her knives, how reasonably priced, and how he was such a nice guy. So I hightailed it down to Intl. Silks and Woolens on a Friday afternoon and handed him 5 knives. He handed me back those 5 knives in amazing, sharper than brand-new condition. The chef's knifes, the pairing knife, and he even did a perfect sharpening job on a couple of serrated knives. I wasn't even sure that was possible til I took 'em to Gary. I took 5 knives to be sharpened by someone sitting at a Gary's Knife Sharpening booth at the South Pasadena Farmers Market today. Gary, I've never met you, but the lady working your booth in South Pas is ruining your reputation. All of my knives came back duller, more scratched up, and badly ground down than when I brought them in. The bargain I thought I was getting ($22 for 34" is wayyyy cheap), is totally negated by the fact that I now have to take them to get redone by someone who knows what they're doing. Update: I received a note form the Gary of Gary's Knife sharpening. He apologised for the service I received, and offered to make it right. I've already takent he knives elsewhere, so I won't be able to take him up on it, but an extra star goes out for a business owner who is willing to stand behind his people and try to make things right for his customers. Maybe I just got them on a bad day. Kudos to Gary for wanting to do right by me. It's nice to see. I had Gary sharpen a few of my kitchen knives at the Manhattan Beach Farmer's Market. I wasn't really satisfied with any of them, and was particularly upset that the two knives with bolsters (that block of metal between the blade and handle) had been ground in a way that left them with a reverse curve. I'm now going to have to find another, better service to correct the damage done. To add insult to injury, the knives weren't even that sharp when they were done, just roughed up. I'm sure this would be fine for scissors and lawn mower blades, but take your cutlery elsewhere. read more

I took four knifes to Gary at the Pasadena Farmers Market, two chef knives, a paring knife and a serrated bread knife. I was a bit surprised, based on all the glowing reviews, at how poor the sharpening was. Barely sharper than they were before. The edges were pretty rough and the bread knife had pronounced burrs in every tooth. It did not look like they were honed or stropped at all, something I've come to expect with a professional sharpening service. Definitely not "wicked sharp" as others have said. I don't know, maybe he was having an off day but I honestly can't recommend. read more

Amazing service. I wish everyone we go to was as good. I send an eMail, he responds with date and time. He shows up early or on time. The knives are on a tray on the kitchen table. Gary goes to work. When if realize that he is here, I go out, say hello and visit a little. He does the work, puts the knives back on the table, rings the door bell to tell me how much. I initially gave this company 1/5 stars Read below but as 12/20/14 Gary himself took time out of his busy schedule to come to my home and correct the mistake. My knives edges are so smooth now, with a mirror finish and very sharp. I'm very impressed. Gary is a true gentleman, a professional and is very good at his job. I just am a lifetime customer. I had about 10 knives sharpened including hunting knives, axe, pocket knives, Multitool, machete, kukhri and the price was amazing. HOWEVER the service performed was HORRIBLE. I didn't realize this until I came home tonight. Edges were rolled, tips blunted, scales scratched! These were not cheaptools. For example my benchmade pocket knife was $100. My kukhri was $200. My Esee hunting knife was about $150. I'm really disappointed and feel cheated. I realize it was not intentional and I learned my lesson. We called Gary ahead of time, and he came out to our restaurant and went through all the knives rather quickly. His prices are extremely reasonable, and the knives were amazingly sharp. I had two chef knives, a parrying knife, and a slicing knife all sharpened for $10 even. he uses a rotary machine to sharpen and some sparks do come off. this is normally not good for most knifes but these were random consumer knives that doesnt seen much of a delicate touch like my japanese knives do. they were all sharpened in less than 5 minutes and I was gone. he sharpened my cutco chef knive so well that he ended up cutting himself. gary offered to round out the end since it was broken at no charge. you cannot beat gary's prices! read more

Hey...at first I thought "hhmm, knife sharpening? really?" kinda weird huh? but let me tell you, I had my knives sharpened by Gary and I absolutely can tell the difference when cutting veggies like tomatoes that have that soft skin. So quick and easy, and knives were super sharp. Cash only so be prepared for that. Very affordable and they say they do all knives, but after using for a few weeks I would say that my Japanese knife is not what it used to be. Their methods might be different than a traditional Japanese sharpener so I would inquire before dropping off a prized Japanese knife. read more

I have several old knives and didn't know if they were any good, so I brought them all to have Gary check them out. He said they were certainly good enough to have them sharpened, gave me a package deal and sharpened all the knives, and was generally a wonderful guy. Took two chefs knives to him and a small Santoku at the Beverly Hills Farmers Market. He initially quoted us $14 for all three knives and said it would take 15min and could come back after we finished our shopping. We came back to pick up our knives and he said he only really needed to work on two of them and so he would only charge $10. Was a great experience dealing with such an honest guy. I left my knives with Gary at the Culver City market and, while at first glance my knives looked better, later I realized that Gary left streaks from the grinder across my chef's knife and others. His work changed the bevel edge shape and I've had trouble getting a sharp edge since. read more
