Moving from Tahoe to upper sac has been more than a culture shock. So deciding to visit Grass Valley was more for a new experience to capture that small town vibe. With that historical background--Gary's really captures that small town cozy bar vibe like crazy. Staff is cool, everyone who visits seems to know one another. The vibe of the restaurant is fun and exciting. I really enjoyed my experience here. I got a caeser salad. Why? Because I love them. And this one is up there on my list of good caeser salads I've had across the world (California). Absolutely recommend this spot if you're visiting or passing by. read more

Solid dive bar right on the main walking street. Food menu is robust and really better than most dive bars.

Lovely sunny patio, quick service, hot food. The tacos were a huge hit, as was the sausage sandwich. The fries were good but would have liked a few more! Stuffed mushrooms and the pastrami sandwich were also good. read more

First time to old grass valley. I loved it, lacking this back home. I was just walking around trying to figure out what to do they had a sign out advertising clam chowder, long story relating to a friend on how they advertised it, but it was a on going joke we had. So I took that as a good sign to say F it and try them out. The clam chowder some of the best I've ever had and the sour they served with it was incredible. The beer was a bonus. read more

I'm a long time resident of the local area and a couple months ago went into Gary's Place for lunch for the first time. It's located on the Mill Street mall so parking can be difficult. The first time there we sat inside and we received friendly professional service. The Clam Chowder is the best. A good selection of beer. There is a pool table and the ambiance is that of a local bar. The next time as a group of six we sat outside on the patio. A good place for people watching! We pretty much ordered the whole menu. The favorites were the French Dip and the Tri-Tip sandwich. The least favorite was the Reuben Sandwich. Again, friendly professional service. read more

After living here for 37 years, this is the first time we have stopped in. I do have to say that they have not been here for 37 years but... Stepping through the door, the bar is long and on the left with tables and stools on the right. It's light and clean with NO dive bar sleezyness that some have. They have a menu you can ask for or just read what they have on a blackboard. Everyone is very friendly and helpfull if this is your first time here. Clam chowder is served on the weekends including friday. Prices are good, food imaginative and really excellent with good prices. They go the extra mile to make this a town watering hole. I finally had the Aji poke bowl. It was absolutely amazing. Chips are incredible. Everything was so fresh, but I have never been here a little before three on a Friday. It's a completely different younger women behind the bar that I have never seen before. I'm so used to the older, very professional, friendly wonderful women that are usually there. If this was my first time ever going there, I would never go back. I watched people order drinks, pay their bills and say thank you and they didn't even acknowledge these people. There was an awful lot of bitching about customers and men being a real chauvinist. There was no smiles, no conversation no nothing. I'm not going there to get therapy, but I'm going there to at least have somebody acknowledge the fact that I am there that I am a customer and it seemed like it was their own personal place. I'm glad I know Garys completely differently. I wish I could remember the name of the wonderful women that work there later in the day or in the evening next time, I'll know better when I walk in and if there's not bartenders that I know and it's the same bartenders that were there today I will turn around and walk Out. I'm giving this place five stars because it has always been so incredible but definitely not today. read more

I usually visit this place when I am waiting to go see a movie at Del Oro theater (across the street). It is always busy with locals. It took awhile to get a drink because the bartender was making drinks for her locals that came in 10 minutes after us. Totally ignored us even after repeatedly asking for a cocktail. It's very clicky in there. Its a good hangout for the regulars but definitely not my type of atmosphere. They should treat everyone equally. I did not try the food for various reasons. On a positive note it gives lonely people a place to go and socialize. Dog friendly. read more

Randomly ended up in Grass Valley at Gary's Place for lunch on a Sunday. The Tri Tip sandwiche is amazing. The meat was excellent the chimichurri sauce is next level good. I also had the Cream Chicken soup which was also great. My Wife had a flat bread with a great mix of greens and olives balsamic vinegar which was great. We had a great time at this local watering hole! After a car club ride to the historical mine, we decided to meet up with another couple at Gary's. From the moment we walked in we were greeted by a smiling bartender named Danielle! She was fantastic! Friendly and and accommodating. We were meeting another couple which turned out to be 6 other people. The team at Gary's quickly help put together a couple tables so we could all sit together! What service! Place looks the part of the perfect Gold Country dive bar while providing a nice place for indoor, or outdoor dining and drinking. Highly recommend their Long Island, but no first hand knowledge of their ability in the shaken, not stirred Martini department. I love a good dive bar, which is what brought me here when we were visiting. But there are dive bars and then there are dumps. This place is the latter trying to pose as the former. When we visited, we were trying to start our day shopping downtown with bloody marys but the trashy older bartender (who wears short-shorts in their sixties?) took twenty minutes to even acknowledge us because she was so busy talking suggestively with her regulars. Just a gross vibe. Got the very clear impression that she was avoiding us because we are a lesbian couple--and obviously weren't regular patrons. Overheard the same bartender referring to someone who was sitting outside as "oriental" and another regular patron as "handicap." Not that the clientele seemed to mind. Zero class. Stay away if you're offended by bigotry. We left and took our money down the street. read more

Don't waste your time. The location is convenient so we decided to give them a try. Worst service ever. Horrible margaritas, all sour mix with barely any tequila. On Father's Day around 8pm, we were looking for a drink and a bite to eat. In the middle of making our drinks, another guest walked up and asked for another round . Went there to get a bloody Mary. They had a patio open where they were serving small breakfast and drinks. It literally looked like a haven for anti maskers. The servers were not wearing masks And the conversation of the group sitting next to us was something along the lines of covid 19 is a hoax. As someone who's been personally affected by this virus, I was astounded by how ignorant the people were at this restaurant so I decided to leave with my friend. I'll never support a restaurant that provides a place for people to congregate without any protection against this virus. At the very least the servers should be wearing a mask. We'll never come back for this particular reason. I'll give my money too businesses that care about the health of their patrons, not only about money. read more
