Great ambience, drinks, meal. Also very fun to have live music. Excited to come again! Service was great for us and we were not in a hurry.

The bartender was super unfriendly. We didn't feel welcomed so we just ended up leaving after quick cocktail.

Ian makes the BEST dirty martini I've ever had. Smooth, didn't taste like rubbing alcohol, crisp, just the perfect amount of olive juice.

We sat at the bar and Monte gave us some great pours, but the historical value and ambiance is built into the exorbitant price.

The Mine Shaft Nevada City…read more Well, slap my suspenders and call me a gold prospector... I reckon I wandered into the finest watering hole this side of the Sierra. The Mine Shaft ain't trying to be an old saloon it is an old saloon. You half expect a miner to burst through the swinging doors yelling, "I struck gold!" Instead, someone hollers, "I struck happy hour!" Close enough. The place had classic tunes playing, folks laughing, glasses clinking, and enough characters inside to fill an old Western movie. They've got Pride flags hanging up, everyone's welcome, and nobody seemed interested in anything except having a good time. That's the kind of town I can get behind. I barely got my boots across the floor before the bartender looked at me and said, "Get in here! Your first drink's on me!" Then he rang the bell like we'd just discovered a new vein of gold. For about three seconds, I thought I'd accidentally become mayor. There was one old boy in there firing off jokes faster than a six-shooter. I laughed so hard I almost filed a workers' comp claim for a pulled rib. If laughter burned calories, I'd have left ten pounds lighter. Sitting on historic Broad Street, sipping a cold one in a place that's been around longer than most family trees... that's something you can't manufacture. You can almost hear the ghosts of old miners arguing over whose mule was lazier. And here's the real miracle: back in the 1800s, you probably had to pay with gold nuggets. Today they'll take Visa, MasterCard, and whatever magic piece of plastic you've got in your wallet. Progress! Five stars without hesitation. If you're passing through Nevada City, hitch your horse (or your Honda), mosey on in, and raise a glass. Just don't challenge the locals to a joke contest... they'll mine laughs out of you faster than the Forty-Niners ever mined gold.

Staff was friendly and the place had a divey, charming appeal. I was a little frustrated with the digital jukebox situation but whatever. This is a great, casual hangout spot. Nothing too remarkable but a great go-to for casual drinking!

Like the…read moretown, the bar which appears to have been open in some capacity or another since the early 1900s, has the old back bar and a cool tin ceiling. There's some odd art on the wall that doesn't at all match the vibe but don't let that deter you. Bartenders were super friendly. The cocktail list was more extensive and sophisticated than I expected. And while there wasn't live music at the time, there's clearly a stage for music, which I'm sure is fun. Definitely worth a visit when you need a refreshing beverage.

The music was unexpectedly stopped during the performance, creating confusion for both the performers and guests. As a customer, I expect business owners to treat patrons and entertainers with respect and professionalism. Unfortunately, that was not my experience. The atmosphere felt unwelcoming, and the way the situation was handled left a negative impression. I hope management takes customer feedback seriously and works toward creating a more respectful and professional environment for future guests and performers. I I would never come back to this establishment Ever again, spending money there was not worth it for the rude atmosphere attitude from the owner.

This place isn't just busy; the line stretches out the door and halfway up the street. After eating here, I completely understand why. Walking in feels like stepping into a classy version of an old Gold Rush mining town. Think rustic wood, warm lighting, an impressive wine selection, handcrafted cocktails, and an atmosphere that says, "Go ahead... order dessert." It's fine dining without feeling stuffy although it definitely has a bit of that "Snob Hill meets the Wild West" charm. Our evening started with a comedy sketch. The hostess cheerfully sat us down, paused for a second, looked around, and said, "Oops... I think I just put you in the wrong spot!" We all laughed, and she quickly moved us to an even better table. As it turned out, her little mix-up was the best thing that could've happened. Better view, more room, and we joked that sometimes the restaurant gods have a better seating chart than the reservation book. The food was every bit as impressive as the atmosphere. The River is known for using fresh, seasonal ingredients sourced from local farms and producers whenever possible, so the menu changes throughout the year. That means every visit offers something a little different, with beautifully presented dishes that let the ingredients do the talking. From the first sip of wine to the last bite, everything felt thoughtfully prepared. Great service, fantastic food, a cozy Gold Country vibe, and a hostess who accidentally upgraded our evening with one funny mistake. The River isn't just dinner it's an experience. Just remember: reserve your table, bring your appetite, and don't be surprised if a little happy accident makes your night even better.
