Gas eatery is Turkish and greek influenced breakfast and lunch cuisine. There is long table seating with a few bar style window seating options. The turnaround is quick so don't expect waits. The kitchen is very open. You could walk through it on the way to the ladies. There is a chalkboard full of lunch specials that the eatery rotates through such as spanakopita and a range of pies. The breakfast menu is massive with superfood bowls, large brekafst items like the Mediterranean madness, toasties, avo toast. You can also get a range of add ons. For drinks, you have the usual coffees, but gas eatery also has range of tempting fresh juices and cocktails. My friend and i decided to go for the Mediterranean madness and the paleo chia seed superbowl. I also for a dirty chai and she got a latte with almond milk. My dirty chai was frothy, had rhe right hint of spice and delicious cremate espresso kick. The drink cost 5.20 however so quite pricey. My friend enjoyed her coffee and ordered two. We asked for share plates and they were provided prior to our meals arriving. The Mediterranean madness comes with two lamb sausages, a fried egg, bacon rashers, baked beans in a tomato sauce, feta and a very tiny slice of Turkish toast. The beans are well spiced and the addition or chargrileld lemon juice complements it. The lamb sausaGes sre well flavoured with a slight sweetness to them. I doused my meal with this green chilli sauce which had me sweating within seconds. The feta helped soothe the pain. The egg is just fried egg. Nothing spesh. And the Turkish toast is not the best. The paleo chia superbowl was definitely a winner. Eith got it eith a side of granola. It comes with fresh mango, apple slices blackberries blueberries andd raspberries that are atop a massive chia seed pudding cooked in coconut milk. Very refreshing and filling. The granola on the side adds the needed sweetness to the meal. We were promptly provided a new set of cutlery and share plates for our sweet brekky. There were two patrons next to me that were having their meals and studying. There were two large groups having brekky. Doesn't get noisy. So a good place to catch up with friends or spend some alone time catching up on work or reading. Definitely worth more visits. read more

Much like the words period, fanny, and pants, the word "gas" was quickly, systematically and ubiquitously replaced by the word "petrol" when I moved from the US to the UK. It's petrol. Petrol, petrol, petrol. ...Which is why I couldn't be happier popping in for a mid-morning recharge brunch at aptly named Gas. (I can only assume they, like I, use the term Gas to refer to fuel... although if not, this review will take a turn for best for all my 12-year old readers.) Gas is a quaint little café serving up brunch faves such as full-force fry ups, eggs bene, Spanish omelettes, and a killer winter porridge with rhubarb, bananas, brown sugar and magic. They do lunch and dinner as well, but truly the breakfast and brunch were the things of folklore. Fantastic, I say. I really dug the communal vibe - bustling servers moved quickly around large raised tables, expertly dropping a flat white here, a soy cap there, and it seemed that the locals could bring their kiddies, grab their favourite section of the paper and have a lovely morning relax. This is my favourite pick for coffee, food, chai or wine in South Melbourne! Gas as in Gastronomy offer amazing food options as well as a very popular catering service. Large wooden benches are postioned through the cafe forcing a friendly sense of interaction amoungst diners. The tapas and mezze style dishes are influenced by the exotic tastes of Southern Europe, Spain and the Middle East. Just looking at the tantalizing selection on offer behind the counter is enought o make your mouth water! My favourite is the Middle Eastern Eggs which are served up in an iron pan with spiced tomato sauce, grilled haloumi cheese and paprika, perfect for a Sunday breaky. The chai latte's are also hands down the best I have ever had, creamy with strong exotic spices I swear I can tatse the cinnamon already! I've made it to Gas a few times now for a lazy Sunday lunch, each time I've been able to score an outside table with friends in the sun. Service has been great, quick and friendly each time and even the pooch got a bowl of water without asking. Food wise they have a heap of stuff inside, and a decent menu too. However each time I've found something inside to eat that's not on the menu. First time it was a pulled pork burger that looked small but is rather filling to the point I barley touched the small salad I order. Second time I had the chicken schnitzel and it was amazing to the point my friends had food envy. If your in the area give it a try, I know I'll be back again. read more

I keep going back to Gas, thinking that I'm missing the point, that everyone else raves about it and so surely they're experiencing something I'm not. But... well, I have to say I'm now definitively able to say it just doesn't rock my world. It's not bad, but it's just... average. Order and pay at the counter, sit inside (where there's lots of cooking fumes, one of my pet hates) or sit outside if the weather is good and wait for your food to be delivered shortly after. Service is simple and while in some respects it makes sense to check out the display for what's on offer (everything is pre-made) it kind of irks me to not get table service somewhere that charges these prices. Because the food is pre-made, it arrives quickly on the table. What it makes in speed, I think it loses in freshness of flavour. Each and every time I've been here my food has been delivered and I've looked at my plate (usually a selection of salads) and been a bit underwhelmed. Ordering something that *sounds* healthy is good in theory until you realise it's overly oily and frumpy in the mouth. Some of the flavours are good, but less oil and a bit more acid would lift these mostly middle eastern flavours to new heights. I'm not a lover, nor am I hater. Purveyor of fine dine in food, and if you ever get the chance catering. Gas eatery is fundamentally the cafe that got the south Melbourne cafe revolution going; not soon after this St Ali appeared. Gas has been around for some time now, several years in fact and is owned by a trio of sisters, whom worked in high street armadale previously. Inside you will find an array of daily made dishes to eat throughout all times of the day. A specials menu is written on the wall. It doesn't have loads of space but the turn over is high. Staff are personally involved in the process of food each day, instead of being detached. Wine in the afternoon, or perhaps before is a welcome addition to a great meal. It's a good place to keep trying non boring lunching options and even something a little exciting to take home and eat. Gas transcends blandery. read more

This place is a little gem and a perfect way to end a food frenzy at the south Melbourne markets. Be warned this place can get quite busy, so you may have to wait to get squeezed into one of their tables. The best thing about this busy restaurant is you may end up being seated with people you don't know, so if you are into chatting to strangers then this is the place for you. We came here after reading all of the (mostly) positive reviews, but Gas ended up being a real disappointment. All of the food is pre-made and you basically order what you want from the counter and it's delivered to your table after it's been re-heated. The prices are pretty high for what you get (2 empanadas, 1 sausage roll, croquettes and 2 drinks came out to about $50), especially considering none of it is made to order. But that wasn't the disappointing part - the food was. The sausage roll was probably the best of the bunch but it wasn't anything to write home about. The empanadas were really bland and flavorless, probably because it (along with everything else) has been re-heated. And the croquettes were basically inedible, having a bit of a chemical-y taste to them almost. At least the service, what little of it there was, was good. But with the variety of great brunch/lunch places around, it's highly unlikely I'll be returning. read more

As a person who used to have a job title 'manhole entry expert' and was required to have a certificate in gas testing before I was allowed to enter the confined space of a manhole, I first went to Gas Eatery & Supplies with some trepidation. I have tested for more gas than any living human should have, and now after my first cautionary visit, I have eaten more Gas than any living human should have. Gas Eatery & Supplies is the a great little cafe set in South Melbourne's high-class suburb. You may find it difficult to find a seat, as it is always busy and people who do get a seat tend to like hanging out with friends chatting for hours on end or just reading the paper quietly - it is just that kind of place. Something about the hubbub of busy waiters and sweating baristas is relaxing, comforting and inviting. The food here is fantastic. My favourite is the chorizo baked eggs. So is the coffee, which is good because on those busier days you may have to order a few before your food arrives. Not because the service is lax. It is just that popular and busy. read more

You can go there for breakfast à la carte with homemade muesli, the best french toast in the world with fluffy brioche bread, poached eggs (free range eggs of course) with great turkish bread or fruits, fresh mango with yoghurt... OR you can go there for lunch to pick out your most favourite tapas, the unbelievably good flat breads or the tasty bocadillos Everything is just great and so yummy!! Awful! If you want to wait 20 mins before ordering another coffee, then another 15 before it comes. Add to that poached eggs that look seriously microwaved, cold food, and toasted bread that you literally can't cut with a steak knife then this is the place to be! I used Gas Eatery for a large catered lunch a couple of years ago and was SO impressed with the food they provided that I decided to try them again for a party in February 2019. The food we got was so damn disappointing. Tiny, tasteless, flaccid pieces of food that just failed to inspire. The worst part was that the prices were the same. When it's great food, I'm happy to pay through the roof. When it's as bad as this.... well, let's just say that's when I turn to Yelp. Do not use this company for your catering needs.
