A really nice experience here in Birmingham for lunch - in fact we only popped in for a cuppa but due to the crazy ass weather decided to stay for numerous brews and some pretty tasty fish and chips! You'd think this place was a chain (maybe it is...but more of a smaller independent one...) and it's obviously in a very popular part of town with loads of people frequenting it for lunch. The layout and ambience is pretty cool and I was really impressed with their selection of beers and food making it the perfect place for any time of the day. The waitress was lovely and the fish and chips really filled me up. Nice suggestion Dan G!

The interior is very charming, the food is fabulous, and oh boy I just love their cocktails which have to be some of the best in the city. It is somewhat expensive however. The bar area is mostly seated, which I find a shame. If there is a large group and you want to get social, try another place.

So, my first day back to work was Tuesday and I was determined not to get too behind with the new venues in the City... After lunching at the Botanist I was asked to attend a meeting with a venue later in the afternoon. I was offered to chose the venue and went for Gas Street Social to get a twofer in one day... Whereas I had, had a chance to try their cocktails previously (see last review) I hadn't yet been in to actually experience the venue. I got there a little bit early, found a booth and tentatively perused the cocktail menu to get the first drinks in for us to get going. The menu is a sold mix of classics and special cocktails that have been designed with a Brummie Twist (Floozy in the Jacuzzi, anyone?). I really liked the fact that selected cocktails are available in a carafe (which provides at least two servings), which makes it slightly cheaper than the price per glass. The interior is what you would expect of a trendy cocktail bar. Bare wood, booths, interesting light fittings and an open kitchen. Whereas I didn't get a chance to try their food on this occasion, I will be back to sample this at some point. What really impressed me what the service. I went to the bar to grab a menu and was advised by one of the waiters that if I ordered at the bar I wouldn't incur a service charge - whereas if I ordered at the table I would. It was a small detail, but it was good to have it pointed out. We had a mojito to start which had a strong berry taste and a vibrant red colour and then moved on to a carafe of "Lunar society", which had a slightly more sour (but just as pleasant) taste. I really liked this venue and I imagine on hot days and weekends it will get packed. Only time will tell if it's current level of popularity holds, but I would recommend getting down there and checking it out if you're into your cocktails. It's a good little place to enjoy a glass of something cold in the sunshine next to the canal!

I have been here a few times and each has been superb. Laid back vibes, top quality ale and well designed surroundings. You really can't fault the place. One thing that has to be mentioned is the cleanliness of the venue. The whole place is spotless!! It's rare that a toilet gets a mentioned in my reviews but not only was it well designed it was immaculately clean. This is not a new place in Birmingham so to see it being maintained to these high standards is very refreshing. I think Gas Street Social is a real gem in the Mailbox. Some bars in the development go for a very upmarket vibe, and other focus on more informal dining. Gas Street Social has both, a relaxed style and attitude combined with perfectly executed drinks and cocktails. One final thing to mention is that I 100% need l come back here for Sunday Brunch. Not only does it start from 9am, it says on the flyer that all menu items come with a free berocca....now that's understanding your customers. Expect a review of the food as soon as possible.

I've been here a few times, for brunch and for drinks, and I must say I'm mightily impressed with Gas Street Social! The restaurant is very spacious and attractive, with a super chill atmosphere and a great outdoor seating area overlooking the canal. Their food is fantastic-- one of the best breakfasts I've had in Brum (I don't *think* it's the bottomless bellinis talking). You can't go wrong with the Gas Street Works (a full breakfast with coffee and some extras), though the pancakes looked amazing as well. Gas Street Social has a very good and extensive cocktail menu (probably the highlight of the place) and they take their cocktails seriously. Highly recommended for drinks or brunch; will have to come back for lunch or dinner sometime!

I have been wanting to try the Gas Street Social since I heard of its opening, but never got around to it. Once Vicky posted about the BOTTOMLESS mimosas and bellinis during weekend brunch, I made a reservation immediately haha This place has a charming interior; lots of exposed metal. The wood accents give it a rustic vibe as well. There is a table up front with fruit/herb infused water for free. There are pastries and muffins too so it's pick the one you want style. Behind there is a toast table. For £3 you can have unlimited toast you make yourself. Many jams and spreads to choose from. I didn't take part only because I'm not a big fan of toast. The restaurant was relatively quiet this Saturday morning. We were sat in a nice booth and given an explanation of a few things on the menu. Our server was lovely and always around when we needed her. I was relieved the menu had more than just a traditional full English. I'm an eggs benedict girl. My partner in crime ordered bottomless mimosa while I chose bellini. I preferred the sweetness of the peach to his orange juice. They sure were bottomless. As soon as our champagne flutes were empty somebody was around to refill them. My two eggs benedict was extremely good. I'd say it was the best I've had over here so far. The English muffins were toasted and buttered lightly just the way I like it. My only complaint is how plain it was served. It just looked like it needed some nice garnish to fill up the plate. Maybe some rocket greens? Not a big deal though. After eating, the drinks kept coming. I'm glad they didn't rush us off as we each paid the extra £15 for bottomless. After 2 hours, yes 2, our server mentioned it would be our final top off. The bill was brought quickly. And we were on our way. Gas Street Social is a terrific addition to the Mailbox. I'd love to come back for some after work cocktails and dinner. I thoroughly enjoyed brunch here; it exceeded all my expectations. If you like good food and brunch cocktails, this is the spot to be.

What a great addition to the Birmingham nightlife line up? Headed here for our Yap On Yelp sesh with Vicki O amongst others and we where treated to a few tapas dishes and some cocktails which where divine. It was nice to actually have a smaller Yelp event that allowed us to get to know each other on a deeper level. Obviously, I know Vicki and Adam S only too well, but it was great to chat with Simon S and Edward! It's a delightful venue with attentive staff and I shall certainly be returning!

We popped into Gas St Social when it opened for it's soft launch on a Saturday evening. It was nicely busy for an early evening - a mixture of ages / type of nights out. Some people having a meal, others having drinks before heading to other places in the Mailbox. The cocktail menu is extensive (picture below). My friend suggested the prices were high - perhaps a little more that the Bitter & Twisted chain but the menu was well thought through & the guys making them knew how to shake a good cocktail so it was worthy of it's price. The G&T I had was also perfectly made & large and perhaps a little cheaper than up market pubs such as the High Field so I did think pricing was too high really. A good addition to see was cucumber water freely available on the bar. The food menu offered a range of options from a 2 or 3 course menu to sharers & quick tapas style bites. Our order was taken from the table & the food arrived quickly from the open kitchen. I loved the lighting & layout of the bar - it appears local guys jam jar lights had been involved in producing a fabulous light up social sign - it's always good to see local independents being used! So time will tell to see if Gas St Social establishes itself on the Birmingham bet scene, but I for one will be retuning soon! Tip: Any single ladies ( or guys) - the bar men are very well turned out & very polite!

I popped in here on the opening weekend for a couple of drinks and loved the cocktails I tried but knew I had to come back when they had settled in more. So I was really pleased to be invited to 'Yap on Yelp' drinks at Gas St Social last night. I love what they have done with the unit- it's so much brighter and appealing than the previous bar was. There's lots of wood and metal and nods to local industry. I especially like the old pictures of Birmingham on the walls going up to the toilets and the old Cadbury signs. There's lots of seating for groups or couples for drinks or food but it was super busy and lots of people were standing too. It's good to see that a new business is doing well and is popular. The crowd is anywhere from mid-20's upwards, I imagine it is popular with after-work drinkers. The music is extremely generic, I think they could get away with something a bit more interesting! We tried their cocktail carafes and almost all of the sharing plates between us! I liked the glasses filled with mint and fruit they provided for the cocktails. There's a wide selection of cocktails available, from classic ones to their own creations. There are three available in the carafe size- the Summer Cup, Lunar Society Punch and Mule on Tap. These are great for a group so you can try lots of different things. I liked the Lunar Society Punch a lot, it's made with gin, Chambord and rose wine. I liked the nod to Birmingham's past in its title too! Mule on Tap and Summer Cup were both popular with the group. Mule on Tap was very syrupy and Summer Cup was more refreshing. I also had an Aperol Spritz which had a very generous amount of Prosecco and Aperol in so was worth the £7.50 I paid. I think the drinks here are about 50p-£1 more expensive than other places. The sharer or social plates were all very tasty. We all loved the black pudding scotch egg and got through a couple of these! It comes with beer ketchup, but I didn't really need that as the egg was so beautifully cooked with a runny yolk. I also loved the smoked salmon skewers which come excitingly presented in a kilner jar. Another favourite was the ox cheek, which fell apart at the touch of your fork and had a beautiful rich taste. Scallops were nice but I'm not sure they are worth nearly £10. I should also add that the service has been extremely friendly and helpful on both occasions I've visited. Staff will offer their suggestions or favourites. The first time we went we were looking a bit lost trying to find a seat on a very busy day and someone came over to point out a couple that we'd missed. The staff member last night offered great suggestions for sharing drinks too. I'll definitely head back for cocktails and social plates as there's still more I want to try. Thank you Vicky for organising, it was a fantastic night and I'm still dreaming about the scotch egg!

A great addition to the mailbox, Gas Street Social combines tasty, interesting food with tasty, interesting cocktails all wrapped up in a welcoming modern bar. The place itself is very well designed, think industrial heritage, plenty of wood and steel on offer here along with some typewriters hanging on the wall for good measure. They've managed to squeeze a good amount of seating in, with dedicated areas for eating to keep diners happy on the busy (very busy) weekends. As it's the mailbox you'll also have the benefit of lovely outdoor seating with views over the canal in the summer, although bear in mind you'll have to get in early to get your towel down! Food is good, they have largely gone with the "British Tapas" approach, and the highlights on the menu are from the small plates section, I'm looking at you scotch egg and ox cheek. There's plenty of variety of drinks on offer and they've got some really good cocktails, these definitely aren't short on flavour and should keep those with a sweet or a sour tooth happy. Price wise it's a little all over the place, there are well priced items on the menu but I can't help feeling quite a lot is a little overpriced, particularly the cocktails. The main negative for me would be the music, they play the aggressive version of elevator music that bars play when they can't think of anything better to put on, this is more jarring than usual considering the lovely design on the place itself.

A selection of the sharing plates, including the gnocchi, meatballs and prawns

This is one of my favourite places to eat in Birmingham, particularly during lunch times. Situated within The Mailbox, the restaurant and bar has a relaxed, open atmosphere, with several different seating options that is suitable for individuals, small and larger groups. There is a wide selection of beautifully cooked and presented food available for brunch, lunchtimes and evenings, and I have never had a bad experience here. I'm particularly a fan of the Social Club sandwich, although I have thoroughly indulged in their gorgeous steak ciabatta on several occasions. The cocktails are lovely too, although a little more expensive than other cocktail bars in the same location. The mixologists are always friendly, and are often willing to create cocktails off-menu upon request. Tonight I opted for five small dishes from their social plates (£28.95) - arancini, gnocchi, meatballs, squid and prawns - to share with a friend, and each dish was really tasty and well-cooked. In particular, the mushroom gnocchi was so nice that we regretted not ordering two instead of one. Absolutely somewhere I will continue to visit!

#IAMSOCIAL Gas Street Social has been in the rear area of Birmingham's Mailbox facing the Gas Street Basin canal for some months now, but this was my first visit. Half asleep and slightly drowned from the rain I arrived to a warm welcome from the staff. As I waited for my friend to arrive I examined the menu. I've pretty much only had brunch in Washington DC or at american-style restaurants in the UK so I wasn't entirely sure what to expect from a British version. The menu has items from sausage sandwiches (my normal breakfast choice!) to Steak, Egg and Chips, or a Wagyu Beef Burger. My friend arrived also half drowned and we were given Bellini's to sample and a large jug of water. (I drink a lot of water!) We both settled on having Gas Street Works which is a breakfast of two rashers of bacon, two Cumberland sausages, a free range egg, roasted plum tomato, black pudding, mushroom, sautéed potatoes with toasted Hockley Bread and a small pot of Gas Street Social beans. Our lovely server, Lily told us we could swap and remove items as we liked, which is good as I don't like eggs particularly. My friend also ordered a breakfast tea with his food. In next to no time our food arrived at the table and we were soon scoffing down our meals. It was as I expected which is good with extra tomato to replace my egg. I was pretty glad we had arrived early as the tables were starting to fill nicely even with the weather still being poor. This is a venue I'd bring my friends too if they were visiting Birmingham. I liked the the vibe of the place, and it was far less brash than Bar Room Bar which had been there previously. It's got a great view of Birmingham's famous canals which adds to the vibe.

We stumbled into Gas Street Social recently after a night at the Christmas Market based on the glowing recommendations of the brum Yelp crowd. The restaurant, which has been open for less than a year, is located opposite the canal at the Mailbox complex. It's an attractive spot, especially when the weather cooperates and outdoor dining is an option. The decor is modern, with pallet wood looking trim, metal, industrial lights, and light rustic touches. The sharing food culture was previously centered on a 90's/00's interpretation of tapas that moved away from the traditional free bites at Spanish bars and into something more elevated. Gas Street Social capitalizes on a further evolved concept of tapas that has become the 'sharing plate'. While there are a full complement of sides and entrees such as their extensive burger selection, the sharing plates are literally and figuratively front and center on the menu. Let's get the elephant out of the room first though. There are two food categories, french and tapas, that the mere mention of will send menu prices through the roof and into the stratosphere. The sharing plates at GSS range from £5.50 for tempura vegetables to a high of £7.95 for salmon skewers that are perhaps more artistic spectacle than stomach filler. These are not terrible prices by any means, but perhaps not as value oriented especially if you arrive with an appetite. The key is to dine for Sunday dinner after their brunch time slot, where all of the sharing plates are priced competitively at £4. The other side of the menu hosts a diverse drink selection, including wines, and many good beers both on tap and in a bottle. During our dinner visit we sampled five sharing plates, a side of fries, and each of us (3 diners total) imbibed on a cider, stout, and wine. My two favorites of note were the gnocchi and the arancini balls. The gnocchi was made with wild mushrooms and shallots in a parmesan creme sauce. My palate came alive with the rich yet delicate balance of the dish. The arancini balls of deep fried risotto, mushroom, cheese, and truffle oil are a true guilty pleasure. The total bill for the dishes and drinks came out to a very affordable £36. If you skip the drinks, you can obtain a veritable feast for 2-3 people from a local restaurant at a lower cost than many of the chains at the Mailbox. None of these places will look and feel as cool, either. It's nice to find a restaurant in City Centre that mirrors some of the most modern of food movements.

To Whom It May Concern, Be At One - Birmingham…read more I am writing to formally raise a complaint regarding the treatment my group received at your Birmingham venue on the evening of Saturday 5th July, at approximately 9:00 PM. We were a group of four professional, sober, over-40s men, all looking forward to enjoying a relaxed evening. One member of our group, my cousin, entered the venue without issue. However, when my brother attempted to follow, he was refused entry on the grounds that he did not have physical ID. While he did not carry a hard copy, he presented a clear and valid image of his passport on his phone. Despite this, the door staff refused to accept it -- even though it clearly showed his identity. When we attempted to calmly question this decision, we were told that only physical ID would be accepted -- a policy that, while perhaps enforceable, could have been communicated more respectfully. I then attempted to enter the venue with my physical photo ID, simply to retrieve my cousin who was already inside. Surprisingly, I was denied entry on the grounds that "no single entries" were allowed -- a confusing and inconsistent response given that my cousin had just been allowed in alone moments earlier. When I questioned this, the bouncer smirked and continued to dismiss us rudely. What was more disturbing was the behavior of a woman whom we understood to be the manager. When we raised our concerns with her, she laughed at us and offered no explanation or assistance. This kind of mocking, unprofessional behavior from a member of management is wholly unacceptable. Eventually, we were told that none of us would be allowed entry, without any legitimate justification. We were left feeling disrespected, discriminated against, and deeply disappointed by the staff's unprofessionalism. I urge you to review this incident, including any CCTV or bodycam footage from your door team that evening. At the very least, I would appreciate a formal response addressing: Your policy on accepted forms of ID (including digital copies), Clarification around the "no single entries" rule, and An explanation for the behavior of both the bouncer and the manager on duty. I hope this complaint is taken seriously. We expected a safe and welcoming environment but instead experienced inconsistency, rudeness, and what felt like discrimination. I look forward to your response and a meaningful explanation. Yours sincerely,

We opted in for the Modern Sharing Tasting Menu priced at £70 per person. Over the timespan of 2.5 hours, three waves of courses were served. I included the regular prices from the à la carte menu. Assuming the portions were the same, the total was £148.45 compared to £140 for the two of us, so not a bad deal to sample a variety. Wave One: two Small Plates dishes ----- Tuna Sashimi Wontons: sesame, soy and avocado (£12.50). The fish was fresh and the shell was crisp, but the sauce was too heavy. ----- 1/2 Aromatic Duck Pancakes: Szechuan, cucumber and spring onion (£26). Duck was overcooked and dry. Accompaniments were standard. ----- Wave Two: two Large Plates and two Rice, Noodles and Vegetables dishes ----- Caramel Soy Aged Beef Fillet: UK premium aged beef, shiitake, ginger and asparagus (7oz for £39). Cook of the beef was adequate, although rather tough to chew. ----- Char Siu Honey Glazed Monkfish: morning glory, caramel orange and pickled cucumber (£33.95). An interesting choice of meat to marinate in char siu sauce. Fish was not juicy but it was good. ----- Tenderstem Broccoli: black sesame and truffle (£8). Vegetables were soft, although the black sesame paste was a bit odd. ----- Duck Egg and Chinese Sausage Fried Rice (£8). A bit oily but otherwise standard fried rice. ----- Wave Three: two Dessert dishes ----- Cherry Blossom: white chocolate, cherry and candyfloss (£11.50). Another dish that is presented with fog. The server allowed the request to swap this with the Banana Fritters (£9) at no extra charge. The chocolate tree and base was rich and smooth. ----- White Chocolate Dragon Egg: coconut, passionfruit and mango (£9.50). We liked the presentation of the dragon egg. Dessert itself was fruity and tasty. ----- In addition, two drinks were ordered. ----- Eastern Dragon: 135 East Gin, raspberry and apple (£18). Pricey but I quite liked the drink, which was sweet and light on alcohol. It also came served in a decorative, lit box a full of fog. ----- Hidden Dragon: mint, ginger and agave (£6). ----- Our reservation was for 6 PM on a Wednesday, and were easily seated when arriving an hour early as the restaurant was empty. Tables quickly filled shortly after but the restaurant has ample seating to accommodate walk-ins. A bottle of sparkling water costs £4.50 and a 10% service charge is added to the bill. The recommended dress code is smart casual, but I did spot people wearing plain solid-colored shirts.
