The estimate was super reasonable and scheduling a job is even easier than getting the quote. They came today. We're at our house for about four hours. Kevin and his whole crew took down a massive old maple for us that was destined to cause trouble in the next major snowstorm. From initial contact to sweeping up the sawdust this company does the job and does it right. They were courteous and knew how to get the job done. They even managed to avoid having to call the electric company to take down wires while working. The crew all communicates really well with each other using radios when they couldn't see each other directly. They were also flexible when we added an extra tree to come down at the last moment. A recent storm burst that came through our area took down half of a medium sized tree in our front yard. Never having needed tree services before, but familiar with Gate City Tree Service from my years growing up in the area, I contacted them the next morning, and Kevin was out within two hours of my call to assess the damage, provide a quote, and advise on the stability and life of the portion of the tree that was left standing. The next morning, he was out before we'd even gotten ready to leave for the day, and in under twenty minutes, he and his team had removed the fallen tree, cleaned up all the debris left behind (including the stack of branches I'd had to trim to keep the tree off of the roadway), and swept up any remnants left behind from chipping the tree. I was really impressed with Kevin's demeanor and attention to detail in removing any trace of the tree that had fallen, and I will be keeping Gate City in mind whenever I or anyone I know finds themselves needing tree services in the future. read more

Although Gate City Tree cut down the 7 tree's they agreed too, after cancelling once, they left 2 different 5' x 3' hollows in the front yard after not putting wood under their tractor, so the grass was completely ruined. After many calls to Kim and Keith, I finally got a hold of Keith who said he would be down later that week to look, never happened. 3 weeks later when he did show, he said he'd be back to fix it. My husband had already tried by laying new seed and watering plenty. Keith never showed back up again. We were left with these huge, grassless indentations in our front yard. This is the third time Kevin and his team at Gate City have helped us. The first two were planned - not this time. A huge pine tree came down on our front yard during the night. We had some long long trees on the edge of our property that we feared with our harsh winters would one day come crashing down on one of our neighbors house. These trees where on a slight slant of of the trees where not entirely straight. Total of 5 Trees 3 where straight easy ones higher above the harder two the long ones at the edge. We called him and he assured us he could do the work with a bucket truck for a fair price. He came cut the 3 easy trees, and said he would come back for the other 2 when the weather was better and safe for him to enter his truck safely. MONTHS passed by with plenty of dry days. We called him a number of times at one point he stopped answering! I ended up calling him on a friends phone and he picked up! He gave me a BS story about how he cant do it and promised next week. I called him again when he did not show up on that day on another number seeing as how he was avoiding me. I cut it to him straight While I might not have been the most pleasant with him on my end I can tell you this was one of many blown appointments!! He got angry at me to the point of being unprofessional and demanded I pay him 400dolars for the 3 trees he did cut down. We had enough of dealing with him. Paid him and he left. What a nightmare that people who we did call had to bring in a crane to remove the trees. They said there was no other way to do it just for liability reasons alone and that since we had the crane out they could have removed the 3 trees Kevin cut for half of what he had charged us. We hired Gate City to remove some trees to improve our view. They arrived when promised and cleaned up afterwards. The crew was professional and polite and helped take down a hanger in a tree by the power line. We obtained several estimates and they were all within 10%. We used GCT because they had their own crane and didn't need to subcontract out that work. Our neighbor used them to remove some large pine trees and they came highly recommended. Communication can be difficult - I had to call several times in order to speak with someone to set up an apportionment. Keep calling, eventually someone will call you back. read more

They were right around the corner from my house and were working on my neighbors house. I had one tree to remove and some trimming to do an another. I spoke to Kevin who seemed nice and said sure wed be happy to help you out, I left my number with the office and spoke to Kim, seemed nice until later they decided not to follow through with what they said they would do.. All they had to do was swing around the corner and build some goodwill and make another 1000.00. They blew me off and then blocked my number. After they said ok to doing it and then decided not to, I feel it warrants a review since if you look at other similar reviews, this is their pattern. Not responsive and not courteous. I have used Gate City Tree twice in the past 6 months. The first time, I had over a dozen trees cut and a dozen trimmed and then in the past week I needed to have even more trees removed. Sigh. These have been difficult trees to remove - very small lot, lots of obstacles on the ground, overhead power lines, dense foliage, very busy, narrow street...basically a terrible lot to work in. I recently hired Gate City Tree Service do some pruning and take down a tree in my side yard. I called on a Wednesday, did the estimate with the company the following Monday and they were able to come Thursday of the same week to complete the job. I'm not an expert on tree pruning or removal by any means, but I was very pleased with the job. There was an obvious improvement to the trees/area with little sign of someone having come in to do the work, meaning there were not branches left all over the yard or any other debris after the job was finished. I did not call around for estimates from other tree service companies so I cannot say if the cost was overpriced or not. I did not feel that I was overcharged. The staff I dealt with (I believe it was the owner and his wife) were very friendly, professional, and appreciative of the service. I would certainly use this business again. read more

I would like to comment on the service I received from Gate City Tree. I called Kevin and set up time to quote my job. He showed on time, looked all the trees I wanted removed, and gave me a great price which depended on the crane operator evaluating the area. Kevin followed up the approval of the quote and scheduled the job. When the day came Kevin called at 7:00 am to ask if we could reschedule due an emergency job after a storm which landed a huge tree on a barn about to be destroyed. We rescheduled for the next week and they arrived right on time with a full crew and large crane. The process took 4 hours. They removed 5 trees and stumps, clean the entire area including the street, which impressed the neighbors. The whole crew acted very professionally and did an outstanding job. Everyone was what you look for in a business today: professional, courteous, hardworking and, well, just plain nice (which was really evident when Kevin, the owner, helped a woman navigate crossing the street by holding her arm and walking slowly with her - something you don't see very often!). My mom called Gate City weeks ago to have a few trees removed from her yard. He missed his appointment, and never returned her calls after, so my mom hired another person to cut them down tomorrow. I passed her house today finding Gate City cutting down trees (she was at work). When I told my mom, she called them immediately and he said his wife called and confirmed the appointment for today -- there was no appointment, and definitely no confirmation!!! My mom called the other company to cancel their appointment and told them what happened, they knew immediately who she was talking about without even telling them. They said they pull this all the time and the owner always "blames it on his wife". The owner of Gate City basically called my mom a liar when she told him there was no confirmation and told her to leave payment in the door for tomorrow. Completely unprofessional!! Also, he didn't cut down all the trees requested. I will say though the yard was cleaned up nicely. Also, in response to the review above about them not being insured, he told my mom they were. I spent a lot of time outside watching and they came over to me a few times to explain the process and answer my questions. Cleaned up beautifully, the yard and the street. They came back two days later and ground all the remaining stumps (and roots!) Kevin was very accommodating when talking about price, especially when we asked for stump grinding as well. My husband saw gate city tree company working in our neighborhood recently and thought it would be a good idea to ask them for a quote to have a tree removed, as well as, 5 stumps. To our surprise the owner of the company, Kevin, came immediately to our property to give an estimate. We had previous verbal quotes from others that were very expensive. When Kevin arrived at our property he took notice of my husbands veteran license plates. He promptly shook his hand and thanked him for his service to our country, and explained that he currently employs several veterans. He then proceeded to write him a quote, he shook his hand again and without explanation, handed the quote to him and said to give him a call and he could get it done within the week. The quote was more than reasonable. Kevin is a perfect example of a hard working American and is why my husband fought for our country.
