This is the longest standing Indian restaurant in Hamilton, and for good reason - the food is excellent. I have traveled all over India, and have been eating Indian food for over 25 years, and can say the dishes are largely authentic and delicious - including the butter chicken. The chefs and owners are Bengali, which is quite common in Indian restaurants - Bengalis and Sikhs seem to be the prevalent restauranteurs in Canada. I have a friend that prefers the butter chicken at Shenai, but we have agreed that both are excellent, and that it's probably a matter of what you become accustomed to. The decor is getting a bit tired and the restaurant is not immaculate, but the service is always friendly, alcohol is offered but not pushed, and I keep on going back to this restaurant for the simple reason that it always pleases. The restaurant is wheelchair accessible, but the washrooms are downstairs.

This is a picture of the expired redeemable coupon

Okay......where do I start?! I read the other reviews and I should have known better....but I guessed hey they were older reviews so what the heck I will give it a chance... The restaurant was empty (1 other patron)...It was clean and the menu was an easy read.... They had good variety... I ordered Shrimp Pakora and Butter chicken with a side of rice and a naan. The wait time for the meal was reasonable... The meal arrived and I knew by looking at it that I wouldn't need any stool softeners that night....I proceeded to eat it because i didn't want to waste my money and besides a flat tummy isn't so bad....i couldn't decipher which dish was which because there was a lot of sauce and they were both the same orange yellow color...same as the 2 stars above....both sauces tasted the same despite the fact that they are 2 different dishes...the butter chicken tasted like sweet hangover vomit with hard pieces of what looked like day old red tandoori chicken cut into cubes....the shrimp were small and hard and tasted like they had been reheated multiple times....The naan had a funny after taste....This morning when I opened my eyes I rushed to the bathroom as I expected I would to relieve myself of gastric assault....I must say I feel relieved and happy.... One other thing that threw me for a loop was the outdated "check in coupon" that was posted on the site and not honoured. The young lady serving me pointed out that it expired in 2015...Besides the not so tasty food...the staff was kind and attentive...

The apps are a bit on the pricier side, but the mains are well-priced. Apps: It was my first time trying chicken momos, which are spicy dumplings. Really good. I love the tuna kebab, which is flatter than a fish cutlet. The singara, which is like a samosa, was okay, but the dough wasn't cooked through. Main: I've tried several of the meat options, they were all new for me. There's always a thick amount of oil on top, but the masalas are all nice. Mejbani beef curry was spicy and okay. There was a lot of fat left on the meat, so it was a lot less than what it appeared. The Biye Bari chicken roast (curry) was really good. The beef tehari was too mild, not spicy at all. The rice they use here is a short grain rice with a bit of bite, not the basmati I'm used to. So I prefer the rotis. The luchi was great, it's a small poori. Desserts: Looks like homemade desserts. The doi was too salty for me, but my mom loved it. It is fermented yogurt, which tastes like extra salty, concentrated yogurt. Their jalebi was okay, but nothing special. I like the option to try new things.

There was so much more on their menu that I wanted to try-will definitely be going there again to try out some new things. We started with chicken samosas and poppers with fries for appetizers. The family bundles made for more affordable and easy ordering. We opted for the tandoori bundle with a few different chicken based dishes, a salad, and naan for $39.99. Then we added on the cheese naan. Salad is your basic iceberg salad with olives, cucumbers, and tomatoes. The curry had a thickened tomato soup-like base but seasoned well and great for dipping the naan. Chicken Tikka kebab came with both leg and breast meat. The tandoori over rice was seasoned with cilantro and a creamy sauce. The server was very friendly and appreciative of the business. He wasn't an owner but showed a lot of pride for the restaurant. He brought rice pudding out for the kids at the end. Atmosphere is very casual and outdated. To the right is counter service for easy takeout ordering. Then to the left is eat in with a waiter. Drinks are all canned/bottle. There's a kulfi case with a bunch of flavors to pick from for dessert. Looked yummy, but we were pretty full.

Great selection on the menu between curries, noodles, soups and rice dishes. I ended up with the Shrimp Dopiaza which ranks in one of my top favorite 5 dishes I have ever had. The flavor was amazing and SPICY, served with long grain rice, curry and lots of huge shrimp! My husband got the Special Beef khichiri which was delicious, lots of bones in there though so be prepared if you aren't expecting it. We also ordered 2 garlic naan because we were expecting a small idk, 6 in diameter disc? NO. You get 4 huge pieces per naan, practically the size of a full pizza. We should have split one but if you like garlic, this has about 2 cloves per slice. Its delicious! For dessert we ordered Gulan Jamun and Rasgulla. Oh my, it's like spongy donuts in sugar syrup.
