I ordered four orders of chicken curry via delivery. The orders came in smaller styrofoam containers providing less quantity than you usually get from other Indian establishments. The curry was also very runny like soup and unlike any Curry you would typically get. The taste was very watery and bland. read more

My last dinner in town I wanted something hot, something warming and also try and introduce my friends kids to some new cuisine. All my Indian food BM's were in Toronto, and this fit the bill. On a cold night we snag the main table with a party of 7 and the waitress is working solo. It's not jamming, but service is definitely taking a hit. The décor is warm and rich, light music, a calming fish tank I normally see in Vietnamese food places entertains the kids post meal. The bathroom downstairs was a little odd. They ran out of some beers and ran out of ice cream. Naan for everyone, garlic, plain, we all ate about 2. Rice, salad and butter chicken for the kids. I went for the onion bhaji as I like the tamarind dipping sauce and despite being deep fried probably isn't that bad for you. Saag paneer was a little too blended, I was hoping for bigger chunks of cheese. The biryani might have been the way to go, a large variety of meats with the special and it was alittle more filling than the entrée's/naan. Vindaloo had some serious bite, it says it has bite, but it was straight up spicy. I should have known when they didn't offer any levels, just this is what it is. Authentic or nothing at all. I thought the garlic naan seemed a little light on the aromatics. Chicken was cubed and tender, shrimp was small, beef had plenty of flavor. Price wasn't bad, service was lacking due to understaffing and having so many small requests like each water refill, each order of naan, rice, each beer. There was lots of waiting. Wednesday nights are not ideal. Hamilton has some serious food, but maybe not Indian, I think I'd rather have gone back to La Luna. read more

This is the longest standing Indian restaurant in Hamilton, and for good reason - the food is excellent. I have traveled all over India, and have been eating Indian food for over 25 years, and can say the dishes are largely authentic and delicious - including the butter chicken. The chefs and owners are Bengali, which is quite common in Indian restaurants - Bengalis and Sikhs seem to be the prevalent restauranteurs in Canada. I have a friend that prefers the butter chicken at Shenai, but we have agreed that both are excellent, and that it's probably a matter of what you become accustomed to. The decor is getting a bit tired and the restaurant is not immaculate, but the service is always friendly, alcohol is offered but not pushed, and I keep on going back to this restaurant for the simple reason that it always pleases. Was with the fam and the GF looking for some dinner on James North before the Art Crawl and wasn't feeling the flagrantly available Portuguese food, so we went to Gate of India. Restaurant was fairly quiet and the service was decent. Decor was nice, warm and dimly lit. The flat-cracker (dunno what it's called) they brought out as an appetizer was actually the spiciest thing we had the whole meal. The saag paneer was a bit bland but passable, the naan was warm and excellent, and the butter chicken and butter shrimp were well-pitched and doused in a delicious sauce. Only gripe was that the music was basically one never-ending song that sounded like a sitar player hopelessly enslaved to their instrument. But perhaps this is a staple of Indian restaurants. Either way, I think this is the beginning of a long love affair with Indian food. Next stop: Banjara on Bloor. read more

I love love love this place. My boyfriend and I order from Gate of India whenever we're in Hamilton. We've eaten here probably 25+ times over the last 10 years and the food is consistently delicious. Our first visit was when we were in university (at McMaster) and we've been coming back ever since. Usual order: sag paneer, chicken phall, beef madras, lamb pasanda special, channa masala, aloo gobi, chicken jalfrezie. Their lamb pasanda special sauce is heavenly. It's slightly sweet, super flavourful and just incredible. Their madras sauce is also amazing. I have never had a bad dish from this place. The meat is well-cooked and high quality- they use white meat chicken chicken and lean lamb and beef. I like how their curry sauces are always well-blended. I hate finding full spices (cardamom pods, whole cloves, etc) in my curries, which happens all the time when ordering Indian food in Toronto (but never at Gate of India). read more

Okay......where do I start?! I read the other reviews and I should have known better....but I guessed hey they were older reviews so what the heck I will give it a chance... The restaurant was empty (1 other patron)...It was clean and the menu was an easy read.... They had good variety... I ordered Shrimp Pakora and Butter chicken with a side of rice and a naan. The wait time for the meal was reasonable... The meal arrived and I knew by looking at it that I wouldn't need any stool softeners that night....I proceeded to eat it because i didn't want to waste my money and besides a flat tummy isn't so bad....i couldn't decipher which dish was which because there was a lot of sauce and they were both the same orange yellow color...same as the 2 stars above....both sauces tasted the same despite the fact that they are 2 different dishes...the butter chicken tasted like sweet hangover vomit with hard pieces of what looked like day old red tandoori chicken cut into cubes....the shrimp were small and hard and tasted like they had been reheated multiple times....The naan had a funny after taste....This morning when I opened my eyes I rushed to the bathroom as I expected I would to relieve myself of gastric assault....I must say I feel relieved and happy.... One other thing that threw me for a loop was the outdated "check in coupon" that was posted on the site and not honoured. The service here is great! The menu is so varied I had a hard time picking what to order. I ended up getting a Matar Paneer with rice, naan, samosas and a pina colada. Everything was delicious and flavourful. The dishes were piping hot and fresh. I highly recommend for all Indian food lovers! read more

We waited almost an hour for our mains, and when they arrived we were surprised at how small the portions were. This was really too bad--because the food we did get, when we finally got it, was really tasty. Unfortunately because of the tiny portion size, we won't be back: simply not good value, despite being packed with flavour. read more

Went to the restaurant with family friends on the weekend. First thing noticed in the restaurant by looking at the people running it (owners) - THEY ARE NOT INDIAN, but BANGLADESHI. Anyways, we were there for the food and for the taste, so we ordered our favourite Indian dishes. We started with appetizers: Chicken Tikka and Kebab. Dish comes in - hmmm, the serviing size found here is 1/4 found in other Indian restaurants. A normal Chicken Tikka piece was cut up into smaller slices, same for the kebab. Taste - the chicken was not juicy, asked for a dipping sauce easily found in other INDIAN restaurants, they said they dont make it. Same for kebab no dipping. Appetizer Score - 3/10 (Fail) For main course we had: Chicken Tikka Masala, Butter Chicken, Shrimp Vindaloo, Saag Paneer, Aloo Gobi, Mattar Paneer. Hmmmmmmmmm, we could not tell the difference between Chicken Tikka Masala and Butter Chicken looked the same and tasted the same. Chicken Tikka Masala didnt look like an INDIAN Chicken Tikka Masala neither was the Butter Chicken. The taste - seemed like it was made for someone in hospital. You would think that when you order a la carte at least the food will be HOT, not luke warm. And oh the things that they use to garnish - Almonds, Coconut - I have never seen an INDIAN restaurant using. Shrimp Vindaloo - The server told it was going to be hot, well hot it was as I could tell from the taste they threw Tabasco sauce. Score 3/10 Chicken Tikka Masala - 1/10 Butter Chicken - same score - no surprises - 1/10 Saag Paneer - my favourite was bearable. I would give it 4/10 Mattar Paneer - I have worked in Indian restaurants, so I can tell just by looking the peas used in the curry were frozen not fresh. Again taste - hospital food. Score - 1/10 Aloo Gobi - The potatoes and cauliflower just boiled and thrown in a sauce with no flavour. Score 1/10 So overall score: 2/10 - FAIL Going back again - NEVER Recommend it to anyone - YES IF YOU WANT HOSPITAL MADE INDIAN FOOD, NO OTHERWISE. read more

Really unhappy with the quality of the food. Used to be fresher, better quality, but over time, quality and food freshness has declined noticeably. Usually when I order, it's combo for 2, plus Mulligataway Soup. Last two times I have ordered, sauces for the curries have been watered down. Usually curries have a decent thickness to them, the past two times it's been watery, as if the cook is adding water to the sauces, or has not thickened them properly. The tandoori chicken does NOT look fresh at all. It looks as if it's prepared well ahead and is cooked or warmed as required, that or it's very overcooked. The chicken is dry, not juicy at all. The soup was a dishwater chicken broth that had a dollop of dahl that looked like a clump of diarrhea at the bottom of it. Usually Mulligataway soup is a thicker soup. I could see through the broth. There was no flavor in it. It was overall disgusting. I have eaten here over the years and the quality and freshness has just gone. I think the cook has just stopped caring about what they send out. I find that this place is a hit or miss. I've had all kinds of dishes and sometimes the food is fantastic and sometimes it's just meh. The onion bhaji and mushroom bhaji are Gori excellent every time I've had it. The nann, rice and poppadum are excellent every time. I've had amazing chicken tikka a few time and the last time it was just lacking. The lamb korma has also been good sometimes and just meh others. I love Indian food. I've had Indian food all over the world and was really excited to see an award winning (based on the signs on their door) Indian restaurant in hamilton. We ordered the chicken tikka masala and a shrimp dish and they were a 2/10. The chicken was overcooked and obviously never marinated and the sauce was sweet! There was no spice to it no flavors just super sweet sauce. I was so disappointed because I was trying to show my boyfriend how good Indian food can be and he was NOt impressed. Nor was I. We ordered three different vegetarian curries that all tasted the same; canned and sweet. Just had a rude experience at Gate of India. We have arrived before when we were warmly greeted and told that they would be shortly closing but we could order and take whatever time we wanted to enjoy our meal. So today when we arrived half an hour before the scheduled shut down we were shocked to be met in a very different fashion. We were barely through the door and an man with his hands on his hips told us that we would have fifteen minutes to eat because he had to pick up his kids from school. I gritted my teeth on that because countless women have managed their jobs and their family responsibilities with grace and aplomb and here was this man saying this as rudely as he could because it was obvious he really did not want us there but for some reason could not lock that door for another half hour. Absolutely awful experience, Disgusting food and terrible service! We live in Dundas and ordered 5 dishes as a treat mid week. Whilst placing our order we were told it would take about 40 min, I also specified that I would like my dish extra hot! Delivery took 1 hr 40 min, with a baby in the house this totally ruined our evening and to add insult it was stone cold! My wife ordered a Chicken Tikka Masala, I have lived and traveled extensively in both India and the UK and what ever we were sent it was certainly not a Tikka Masala, but it was most definitely disgusting! I ordered a Lamb Dhansak and had specifically requested it extra hot as the Canadian pallet for Indian Food is on the milder side, this arrived both cold and very mild! This restaurant has to seriously look at the delivery company it uses and its chefs because there are lots of other restaurants out there providing a far better quality of food and service for I might add less money! Our hunt for an Authentic and good value Indian Restaurant in Hamilton continues because we will never give Gate of India our hard earned money ever again! Disgusting and awful! When I called to voice my disappointment regarding my order I was met with an unapologetic and rude response! Having been married to an East Indian woman, I have experienced Indian foods in quite a range. Anywhere from Little India in Toronto to home cooked mother-in-law Indian dishes. I was severely disappointed by the butter chicken. I know that one should ask when going to an Indian restaurant to see how spicy they make it (learned that lesson the hard way...) and so I asked. They said it was 'mild'. Boy what a sever understatement. I found more spice in President's Choice frozen butter chicken than this place! While the sauce was creamy, there was zero spice in it at all. And their Mango Lassie's left much to be desired. What a shame. read more

Absolutely delicious, if a bit expensive. The samosas and pakoras were the best I've ever had, and the curries were fantastic. I would eat there all the time if not for the price - it cost us 90$ for the four of us, plus tip and that was splitting meals designed for 1/2 the number of people we had. This restaurant is a joke. I ordered butter chicken and received chicken pieces in a yellow, coconut flavoured broth that had a soup-like consistency. The garlic naan barely had any garlic at all. A complete waste of money. If you're going to call yourself an Indian restaurant you should be able to make butter chicken correctly read more

Enjoyed Dinner selection #1 for 2 with Tandoori Chicken. All selections provided with the meal were nicely prepared and very enjoyable. The curry beef was on the mild side. The service was good. My girlfriend and I ordered takeout yesterday. The naan bead was burned and the butter chicken sauce was way too sweet. The sauce was like tomato and sugar and the oil was separated.
