My daughter was at Gateway from age 3 to 4 (graduated to TK) and it was such a great experience. This was her first step into care/schooling outside of home so I was particular in what I wanted for her: Clean facilities: Due to covid, I couldn't go inside but I did a video tour, reviewed classroom videos, and was able to sneak peeks from outside. We felt good about it what we saw. After she was enrolled, we were allowed in a few times for family events and I was thrilled at the space. Neat, clean and organized. (The outdoor play area has shade for the kids and soft padded areas ... no tan bark!) Learning and Development: I'm amazed at how much my daughter learned over the year. They focused on the things you would expect like ABC's and numbers but also STEM experiments and social development (managing feelings, consent/boundaries, and relationships). Celebrations: when searching for schools, I came across a number of them that didn't celebrate holidays, birthdays and the like - which was a little sad to me. I understand it isn't for everyone but I wanted my daughter to be able to celebrate the fun stuff... gateway was an awesome place for that. They hosted a really fun Halloween event, a few family events and an adorable graduation ceremony (caps, gowns, awards, flowers, goody bags and all!). Teachers: They are truly wonderful. My daughter absolutely adored her preschool teacher (we had teacher Jianna) and I know all the parents in the class felt the same. She took the time to really build relationships with each child and work with them on individual needs. We had a parent-teacher conferences and I always appreciated how thorough her assessments were. I was a bit concerned with some of the earlier reviews here. BUT thankfully, this is a great daycare and we have both our kids here (2, 4). ALL of the teachers that we've encountered seem so friendly and you can tell they truly love kids, love what they do, and are so caring. The infant teacher that takes care of my son truly loves him SO much, and as for my 4 year old, the teachers are always on top of how she is, what she's doing, what she likes/dislikes, what she needs work on. The facilities COULD use some updates, but honestly, staff & kids are what's most important, kids don't care that much about amenities. I can tell my kids are really thriving here and would highly recommend to anyone! I think the only gripe was that it was a bit hard to get a hold of them for enrollment, but it's only one main office staff and I'm sure she has a lot to deal with dealing with parents, general office & building maintenance, etc. Took some persistence over email and over phone. My daughter enrolled mid-pandemic on September of 2020. She started in the junior preschool the Monkey room with teacher Mimi until July 2021. My daughter was moved to the preschool suite, Dolphin room with teacher Faride. Teacher Faride left on August 2021, but they hired more preschool teachers and new administrators. I was happy with the new preschool teachers, such a nice group of ladies.They all have a degree in Child Development or Psychology except for one teacher, but she is currently in school working towards her degree. They are super friendly and very nurturing to children. My daughter learned so much. The program is not perfect. I would like for communication improve from the front desk. They have a new receptionist or admin assistant. Unlike the previous receptionist, Derica. The new one doesn't respond to emails as quickly. I always have to call or send multiple emails to get a response from her. Now, I just copy the new directors when I email the receptionist to make sure I get my questions answered. She's new so I hope she will improve overtime. Other than that, we have been very happy at Gateway. My daughter will be going to Kindergarten this fall. Looking back on our experiences. Gateway was one of the few preschools that remained open during the pandemic. The Gateway team, both past and current staff were there for us when we needed child care. My daughter has been happy there which is why I give them 5 stars. I don't know much about the previous comments since my experience has been positive. I don't believe the previous comments reflect the positive changes especially the wonderful new preschool teaching team and directors. I really liked how Gateway respond to parents needs. They have increased enrollment. I see more children in the morning at drop off time and the center extended their program hours from 8 am - 5 pm has changed to 7:30 am - 5:30 pm. I truly can't say enough great things about the new preschool teachers. My daughter can't stop talking about her teachers. I highly recommend Gateway to all of my friends. read more

I called multiple times a day for a week straight and followed up with two emails to inquire about enrolling my daughter. No calls were returned and no emails were responded to. I cannot in good fate enroll my child in a center with staff who can't even pick up a phone call or answer an email. Now that I am seeing the reviews, I think I have dodged a bullet. read more

Now ~17 months since we left the Gateway preschool due to Covid, my daughter said to me today: "at Gateway a teacher pulled and twisted my arm so hard that I thought it would fall off". And I saw this happen to multiple kids during our 3 1/2 years at the center. I complained to the director, I complained to the director's director. They both told us that if we didn't like the center, we could leave. I see there is now a new center director, so maybe things will improve, but I don't have a lot of trust in the entire YMCA system after our experiences. There are a couple of truly great teachers at Gateway, but many of the new hires were temps and people with few skills. I witnessed a temp worker yelling at a 2-year old alone in a bathroom that his poop was "gross". I witnessed multiple incidents of teachers grabbing children by the arms and dragging preschoolers across the floor by their arms. I witnessed two tiny little kids screaming and crying for almost 20 minutes because they were dropped off in the preschool by a Gateway teacher in order to "transition" to a new classroom, but there were no staff there to receive them so a temp worker just told them to hold hands. For almost a year, our daughter kept asking us "why did teacher x say that I am not pretty when I cry?" When our baby first started in the infant suite, we were told that our child's teacher was the front desk assistant. This went on for many months but we figured out quickly that it was a ruse-- the desk assistant actually just worked at the desk, but presumably she had the childcare credentials required by licensing. Meanwhile our baby was cared for by other teachers off-ratio or by "floaters". Later, in the preschool, our child's teacher was off site taking classes most of the time. The teacher would come in for a couple of hours at drop-off time and then be gone all day. My daughter did not know the names of the people who took care of her during most of her time in preschool. Gateway greatly exaggerated the amount of time the primary teacher would be present-- we only found out by comparing notes among parents. The NAEYC accreditation seems like a joke-- Gateway would post a weekly curriculum for the week that NAEYC would visit, and then that same week's 'curriculum' would stay posted, untouched, for months. We are grateful to the few wonderful teachers we had (thank you so, so much; you know who you are), but overall we regret the experience. I spent so much time complaining to the director and hoping that she would care about the quality of childcare. We didn't complain to licensing, but I wish we had. When we left Gateway because of Covid we were thrilled to find that there were better, more caring, and safer centers out there that even cost less. read more

We visited this day care after a long process of scheduling a tour and also waiting until our child was old enough to meet their age limits. I ended up not filling out an application for the wait list (yep, I only got to step 1 which was getting off the wait for a TOUR) -- see below. Pros: Extremely close to some of the biotech companies in SSF. This was our main reason for being interested. Also extremely close to the highways for getting in and out quick without battling local traffic. Huge parking lot that seems to be shared with other facilities but parking was a breeze. Building has a lot of windows, so it gets a lot of sunlight -- if you're into that. Price is not bad, it was considered one of the more reasonable ones I came across. YMCA membership with day care and date nights once a month (this was a nice idea) -- however, for us, this was of limited utility since we don't live in SSF, and only my husband works up there. Nice lobby sitting area with reception. Cons: Longwinded process to just get a tour (forget getting on the wait list, that is another story). I checked in with this place at the end of my first trimester and was told that they only take infants who are 3 months old and you need a tour before you can get on the wait list (I contacted them in March, the next tour available was May, and they weren't sure of any openings until October. Fee for wait list is $100, which isn't terrible considering some day care centers want a month deposit or more). I left the conversation at that for efficiency since they weren't even sure they even had openings. After my baby was born, I asked them for a tour in October and then was told I needed to wait until one was available which was in early December. Holy mackerel! I already knew in the back of my head this was not going to suffice for when my advisor needed me back at least part time on my research work. Well, after waiting with baited breath for months to do this tour, we get there and find out there's a mixup of the time they had in their calendar versus what I had. I'm usually a time nazi so I highly doubt I had agreed to the time they reported which my husband would not be able to attend. In any case, they were able to accommodate us (albeit somewhat late) and we toured the facility. The space was small for each group of students. For each age group, they get a section of a much bigger room that is separated by partial walls and a corridor separated off by a series of baby gates. There are prep stations between each section. What I was concerned about was the open-air between each section, and the railroaded layout of the place -- oldest kids had to pass through all the younger kids sections and it appeared to me this was a large number of kids who would exchange germs -- not just between the kids in the small classes at each level. When I asked about germs I was told to expect my kid would be sick pretty much for the whole first month (at our current day care, my daughter had one short cold for the first month we were there). Not a lot of toys. The toys were very neatly placed but didn't seem like they were getting much play. They do not pay for food or snacks with tuition -- you can pay for an extra food delivery program if you'd like, or you must pack your own stuff. Baby's sleeping quarters are cramped and between each section of play space with big windows. While it's great they can keep a close eye, it wasn't peaceful. Older babies sleep on mattresses on the floor -- I noticed this because I was concerned about settled dust and allergies. This was a turnoff, even if the place is vacc'd every day. Somewhat of a lack of excitement in the staff, but of course, this is subjective. read more

My child was at this center from 13 to 17 month old in first toddler room. Below were my observations: - the center for under 2 was like a zoo because every time I dropped off or picked up my child, many children were crying and screaming without anybody paying attention to them - I have observed child abuse at under 2's room. When I came to pick up my child I saw one of their caregiver " Maria" pulled a child leg down the slide out of anger. I was horrified. In another instance an infant fell of chair and flat on the floor on back of his head and their same crazy caregiver, Maria instead of picking the child was standing and shouting at someone else explaining what the infant did wrong that fell instead of picking up the poor baby. The infant was still crying really bad - their under 2's yard are just like a zoo. They leave infants without docks in the yard in the middle of the floor and older kids run with their bike to them and over their foot - They completely ignore a child cry when they are in the yard. Once I observed a child cried for almost 20 min and caregiver while next to him did not take the poor child in or check why he is crying - Once my child got a really bad bruise on her forehead. They told me she just hit it to the book. Elsewhere she never got a bruise. I saw another poor toddler whom forehead was full of bumps and the caregiver said it is normal here for the to hit their head. - constantly you get emails that there have been pink eye, or some other sort of infection like mouth virus. Actually a kid had lots of rash around her mouth and once I asked what is that they said is pacifier which is not true reason - one caregiver had conflict of interest and only would hold one infant who seemed to be her friend's child all day without paying much attention to other kids under her care Bottom line this place is not good at all. read more

I visited Gateway Child Care Centre yesterday for basic school tour. On upon our arrival we were asked to wait for 5 minutes for someone to show us around. The centre looked nice and we were excited to see everything. After some wait a women walked out- does not greet us or introduces herself. Just tells us that the centre has no openings for infant or toddler program. We were taken aback because we found her very cold and rude. I still kept little hope... Thinking that if I like the tour I will put my son's name in the waiting list. And asked the lady that we still wanna take the tour.... She took us out finally but was very rude whole time. The centre was neat and clean but I didn't see any child happy. Even the staff taking care of the children looked bored. There was just lot of negative vibe in the whole place Another bad point about this place was that they do not provide meals to the kids. Hence the parent has to provide for it or you can hire their food service for another extra $130 for meals and snacks After the tour I asked the lady for her name...her name was Gene and asked her position in school...she was the associate director. The centre looked hygienic but really poor staff and service. The only positive point about the whole place was the parking. As the centre is situated in the industrial neighborhood...so there are lot of parking spots around the centre. Hence seeing the staff and their inappropriate rude behavior we have decided not to put our child's name in the waiting list also. read more

Other parents would understand that putting your child's care in someone else's hands is a very, very, scary thing. You have to trust that they are going to take care of them like you would. I felt very comfortable at Gateway the first time I went for a tour. I felt even better about the place the second time with my husband. Today was my daughter's first day. I still felt at ease. It also helped that she didn't cry her head off when I left. What I also love about this daycare? They use an app called the TOT report and you receive a text or email when they eat, sleep, and even poop. My daughter's teacher is so awesome as she sent me a picture of her playing with toys. I didn't even ask for that and she sent it to put me at ease. They also have a webcam so you can catch glimpses of your kid for crazy, paranoid parents like me! So far so good...I hope to update my review with more postive things and more stars! read more

When i was pregnant with my son, we started looking as soon as possible for a child care center. We had very specific ideas about what we wanted and they included a larger facility that was very organized and clean with a lot of enrichment where he could thrive and grow. After touring s e v e r a l places...this was our first choice (and that includes similarly run facilities in the city where i would have received a discount through my employer) and we put our name on the wait list. After the delivery and getting settled phase, Jeanne called me to verify that i was still waiting for a spot- yes please! She gave me a good estimate on when they would have an opening and we were very lucky and got a spot right when we needed it and have been very happy. The infant rooms are run with 1 primary teacher caring for 4 children. ages of the children range from 3 months to 2 years in the infant room and then the kids transition to the toddler room and then to preschool. We bring his food every day- and while that can be a chore sometimes, i think it ends up being a smart thing with food allergies being unknown during the time that kids are learning to eat regular food. We also provide his diapers and wipes, sheets for the cribs that they have there, and toothbrush for him to brush his teeth. He has a very nice sized cabinet that we can store things in to make it easy. The kids are all on their own schedule and the teachers are ridiculously accommodating in terms of how you want your child's day structured. He gets dropped off in the morning with no crying, then gets music time, art time, story time, playing outside time, naps, food, hugs and kisses and he is one extremely happy kiddo when i pick him up in the evening. The staff keeps me updated using an app on the ipads in the rooms, so i can see when he eats, sleeps, pees, poops- you name it - and they can send pictures and notes that way too - i love the pictures. there are also video cameras in the rooms if you want to see real time. They are huge on cleanliness and hand washing - good habits start early! and in case any other children are sick they will post notices immediately... in my case he's only been sick one time since starting and it was more than a year after he started - i think that's fantastic! We are also updated at parent teacher conferences twice or more a year. they can show you what they are working on with the kids and are available for any questions or concerns you have. As he approaches the 2 year old transition mark, he's been starting to spend time with the older kids and playing in the older play area where he adores rolling around on a tricycle (they provide helmets too!). and i know that they will do whatever else they can to make sure that the transition to the next class is as easy for him as possible. We are really happy with Gateway Childcare Center and he loves it too. He will be staying there until he starts kindergarten because i totally trust that he's getting the very best care... read more

My daughter started in the toddler classroom at 2 years old at Gateway. Prior to being at Gateway, I was a stay at home mom so you can just imagine how much of an adjustment I (WHOOPS), I mean my daughter had starting school/day care. Thankfully, the teachers at Gateway always made me feel comfortable when leaving for work after dropping her off. On her rougher mornings, the teachers would tend to her on a personal level which always made it a lot easier for her and I. One of the greatest memories made at Gateway between my daughter, her father and I were the holidays. During the Christmas season, Gateway brought in faux snow for a "Winter Wonderland" party. The children had a blast making snow angels, while their parents (me especially) raved over picture taking. They also threw a "Thankful Breakfast" during Thanksgiving to thank the parents for sending their children to Gateway. My daughter is now 5 years old, and is now in Kindergarten. Lets say I'm missing Gateway tremendously! I can go on and on about how great this school is, so I've included a "short" list on what exactly my favorites were. 1. Webcam-I definitely miss watching my daughter from work during the day. 2. Security- The door can only be opened when someone buzzes you in 3. Field Trips- My daughter was able to go on several different field trips 4. "Open Campus"- I was able to pop in and out of Gateway as I pleased. If i felt like visiting my daughter during nap time, there was never a problem. 4. Education- My daughter was too ready for Kindergarten. Her current teacher has already mention that she is way advanced in her class. 5. Teacher/Parent Communication-Never did I have a problem communicating with the teachers or staff. Whether it was e-mailing, calling, or face to face we've always had a great connection. read more

I was fairly happy with Gateway when my kiddo was a baby and when he was in the junior preschool (Teacher Mimi is amazing!). However my experiences very much reflected those expressed by Jeff M. under a separate review. I've continued to hear about the preschool experience, more than a year after we left Gateway - e.g., harsh physical treatment. I initially realized there was an issue when I was being called in for my child's "behavioral issues", which was a total surprise to me as my kid was generally so good-natured... after much digging (and gaslighting by the Gateway director), I realized that it was a function of not napping in a poorly-run classroom. I'll skip the details, you can read them in Jeff's review and/or on the state licensing board report he linked (it was very surprising to me that the things in that report were exactly the things I heard about from my child, and which the director at that time told me were untrue, though the investigation was conducted several months before my kiddo started having issues). I hope things have gotten better under new management. We are now in a wonderful program elsewhere. read more

Infant care in the SF and Penninsula area can be difficult to find due to lack of affordable spaces and long wait lists. High quality infant care can be even more difficult to find. I started touring infant care facilities when I was around 6 months pregnant with my son. I visited at least 5 different child a centers, all of which had excellent online ratings or were recommended through a parents list serve in the town where we live. From the first time we visited Gateway, my husband and I both decided it was our first choice. The facilities were clean and safe and well lit with plenty of natural light, with good security at the front door. The staff were attentive and interested in the infants, and all had received certification for child care. The cribs and toys seemed high quality. We decided right away that it was our first choice. We waited about eight months for a space to open up, which seemed reasonable given the is a high demand for good child care. Jean was very helpful and thorough throughout the application process. And our son's primary care giver is really fantastic. She listened carefully when we met before he started, and took notes about his daily eating and sleeping routines. and she helped him learn to take naps in his crib, and he's always happy when we drop him off and pick him. I feel very comfortable leaving our son at Gateway every day, and think he's happy to spend his day with caring teachers and other infants close to him in age. I'm looking forward to watching him grow into the toddler and preschool programs, as I know that the YMCA, and especially Gateway, takes child development seriously and trust he will have plenty of high quality learning opportunities as he grows. read more

We love this day care and feel so fortunate to have found this place for our daughter. Our daughter has been at this day care since she was 5 months old and is turning 2 next month. The teachers are all very caring and friendly and my husband and I have the utmost trust in them providing the best care for our daughter. They all know her name as well as our names and greet us everyday even if we're not their primary student. We always feel at home and comfortable when we drop off and pick her up. Our daughter tends to be very cautious and shy, but she is very attached to the teachers and we think that says a lot as to how much love and care they provide on a daily basis. They have a very clean no-shoe environment in the infant room, and cameras in each rooms that allows us to check up on the kids during the day. There's also an online application called a Tot Report where they log all the diaper changes, meals and naps so you know exactly what the baby's schedule is during the day. They also call you right away if they need to reach you, and post pictures of your kid having fun. They periodically have fire drills, teacher training days and have a very structured curriculum and staff development plans as well. All the kids grow up together which is also nice. It definitely feels more like a school than a day care. We look forward to our daughter completing all the way up to preschool here. Definitely recommended! read more

We love the staff and administration at Gateway. They are absolutely awesome. We have since moved back to Los Angeles so my daughter no longer attends, but she still regularly talks about her teachers and friends at Gateway, and I sure miss them too. What we love about Gateway: 1) Hands down, this is an amazing staff. Everyone makes the effort to get to know your child and you as a parent - even the teachers who aren't your child's teacher. Everyone is so friendly, helpful, caring, and attentive. 2) The little extras: Things like "Parents Night Out" which was expanded to roughly a monthly offering. Basically after-hours care to give parents a much needed date night. Holiday festivities that encourage parent/family participation. There is no shortage of opportunities for parents to engage or to volunteer! Peninsula YMCA membership benefits included with tuition. It's nice knowing that you can use their facilities. 3) The campus itself is lovely. Go take a tour and see for yourself. I love that big family room type setup in the lobby. So many times where I arrived a little early to pick my daughter up, saw that she was having fun outside with her friends, so I parked myself on one of the comfy couches in the lobby and sent some work emails while I waited. read more

I love Gateway, from teachers, administrative staffs, to installations. I'm really happy with the whole experience and I wanted to share it with parents looking for a safe and nurturing place for their children. You can get involved as much or as little as you want, they are always coordinating something to increase the sense of family and community. I also wanted to share an experience that really amused me once. One day I was dropping my son in the middle of the day after a doctor's appointment, while at the same time one of the teachers fainted. I was so surprised by the immediate respond everyone had; I think the kids didn't even notice it. The administrative staff immediately jumped out of their offices to help the teachers while the paramedics arrived in less that 5 minutes. After seeing how well organized and how calmed they remained during that stressful period I felt really good about choosing Gateway for my son. read more

My wife and I have been very pleased with Gateway. Two of our kids have attended the facility, and we couldn't be happier with the attentiveness, caring nature and creativity of the teachers. Additionally, the facilities are great, including a playground they are currently re-surfacing to make more kid-friendly. Finally, the programming appeals to all sorts of kids and includes soccer, music, zumbatomics, child portraits, periodic bounce houses and great day-to-day creative activities. Inconsiderate of their customers, just out for the funds. We shoveled out very large amounts of money for our child being there for a total of 4 days. They have no consideration if your child is ill. Our toddler had to take almost a full month off (I noticed they let parents drop off their kids even when they have snot running down their noses) you are still paying very large sums of money for nothing, and risking your child getting very sick. read more

I love Gateway -- and more importantly my two children (one who's since graduated to elementary school and one who's currently in preschool) really love it. The teachers and staff are wonderful. They are NAYEC certified. They also have a video cameras in the classrooms and outside in the playground so you can see the different activities your kids are doing. The classrooms are clean and there are many activities to keep your child stimulated. The Center's director is really sweet, smart, and experienced. They keep track of your kid's progress and schedule parent teacher conferences every few months so that you can see your child's progress. Because they are associated with the YMCA, they do offer financial assistance to families that qualify. read more

This place is a sad excuse of a daycare to me!!! They take advantage of people and I do not recommend ANYONE take there child here!! My mom decided to try and take my little brother here for a whole 4 DAYS before he got extremely sick and a bad ear infection from another child at the this center (Which with their strict rule of no ones child allowed if any signs of being sick are there, no child should be allowed with runny noses and coughing right?!?! well.... my mom saw several children there with those symptoms) anyways, she had paid the $681 deposit to enroll him then charged $1,719.00 less than a week later according them thats the rate per month for a toddler. He again went to this center for a total of 5 HOURS for 4 DAYS and when he got sick my mom decided it was best to just take him out of this day care anyways due to his severe separation anxiety. they still charged her not only for that whole month BUT decided they were also going to charge her for another month even though she followed procedure and wrote a 30 day notice!!!! She tried to talk to them and see bout a refund or a prorated payment back considering he wasn't even there for a week and they refused!!! this is completely outrageous and I don't see how they have any right to take advantage of some one like this!! I really hope that more people come forward if they have been treated like this and let the true colors of this business shine through on here so this doesnt happen to any one else again!! read more

Our 4 year old daughter has attended Gateway since she was 5 months old and we couldn't be more pleased. The teachers are attentive, caring and patient. The children gets lots of fresh air playing in the outdoor play area and clean cots to sleep on at naptime. The children do lots of hands on art projects which we really like. The curriculum is emailed to the parents each week. There is also a pre-K pull out with a separate curriculum for the older preschool children who will be attending Kindergarten the following year. The Center offers additional activities (at additional cost) such as the Tumble Bus and Soccer Shots, and even offers a hot lunch option for toddlers and preschoolers twice a week (also at additional cost). There is a share library where children can check out books which also includes infant books. This daycare center is part of the Peninsula Family YMCA and tuition costs also include a family membership to the YMCA in San Mateo. Our infant daughter also attends the center and is very happy there. I have had both our kids at Gateway since they were around 4 months old. They are now 18 mo and 3 years old so we have a lot of experience with this childcare center. I cannot say enough about what a great experience it has been for both kids and for us. The teachers are very attentive to the children and I have never felt worried or anxious about leaving the kids here (even when they were only a few months old). The center has had very little core staff turnover during the course of our kids' time at Gateway which is really important and hard to find in a childcare center. The strong curriculum and supplemental enrichment classes such as soccer and music also contribute to my overall satisfaction and endorsement of the center. They do consistently have a waiting list so I would highly encourage any interested parents to contact the center as soon as possible in order to ensure that there is a space for your child when the need arises. read more
