I highlighted them and gave them a call along with five others within my apartment sector, and out of the five that I called 'Above and Beyond' was the only one that called me back. Go figure! The next step was returning their call to set up an initial visit, which in that initial visit with Kaori, I got a great feel of what its like at 'Above and Beyond' during peak hours, plus I was introduced to several of their support programs (S.M.A.R.T Recovery, REBT - Rational Emotive Behavioral Therapy, Art Therapy, etc.), and met several of their volunteers and staff. I felt overwhelmed, but excited at the same time because 'Above and Beyond' was so welcoming compared to the others that didn't even consider returning my call. Since that initial visit, I have dropped in at 'Above and Beyond' on a few occasions and even ended up moving closer to the East Garfield Park area, which was another huge plus because I put them as a high priority as my internship site. I highly recommend 'Above and Beyond if you are a client, volunteer, intern, or anyone looking for work because its facility is filled with diverse welcoming counselors and volunteers that keep its programs flowing. I have nothing but respect for 'Above and Beyond' and any other mental health facility on this side of town because of the clients they serve and what they do. Thomas G

Review for Schwab Rehabilitation Inpatient Center - 1401 S California, Chicago…read more My mother was transferred to Schwab Rehabilitation Center from Christ Hospital today, and I'd like to share my initial experience. Before the transfer, a woman named Lauren had been in contact with me regarding the process. She was incredibly kind, professional, and reassuring. She made me feel that my mom would be in good hands, and I truly appreciated her communication. On the day of the transfer, the EMTs who transported my mom were also very professional and pleasant. When I arrived at Schwab, I was unsure where to park. I pressed the call button at the lot entrance and spoke to a woman with an unprofessional tone. I explained the situation, she asked for a name, and then simply lifted the gate without any further instruction. It wasn't a great first impression. Once inside the building, several staff in scrubs walked by me without acknowledging or offering help. I stood around unsure of where to go until I found a security guard who gave some guidance, though she directed me around the building to a different entrance. That's when I encountered the same woman from the parking lot again -- same unwelcoming tone and attitude. Eventually, I found my mom's room on the third floor. The nurses there were kind and began handling her intake. However, my experience quickly turned unpleasant when a male nurse entered the room. Without greeting us, he pointed at my son and harshly asked, "HOW OLD IS HE?" I was taken aback and asked him to repeat himself. When I told him my son was 10, he abruptly said, "He can't be here, he has to go sit in the lobby." I responded that he wouldn't be sitting alone. He replied rudely, "Nah, you gonna have to sit with him," to which I said that I wouldn't be doing that either and that I'd leave once I finished what I came to do. He then turned to the other nurses and asked, again in a harsh tone, "What do you need from her?" The nurse replied they were reviewing my mom's personal belongings. The male nurse said he was going to "check the age range," then walked out. I asked the other nurses who he was, and they told me his name is Baxter and he's the charge nurse. After I left, I called Lauren and reported his behavior. She was once again kind, understanding, and professional. I really hope my mom's care team is more like Lauren and less like the individuals I encountered today -- particularly Nurse Baxter.

I've stayed at other rehabilitation centers before. Schwab is the best rehabilitation hospital and…read morethe best experience of the three I've been to. Beginning with the staff, the nurses are extraordinary, compassionate, and empathetic. There was nothing too big or too small that they wouldn't do. Nurses Tony, Sheila, Erica, Shaniqua, and Emma went above and beyond. I felt like they treated me as one of their own children they were so loving. CNAs Lidia and Loni were amazing along with Anahi , Anne , and Monique. The doctors were amazing and very thorough, and I spoke with my doctor face to face every day. Dr. Michelle Gittler was always concerned with my feelings, progress, results, and overall health. She was compassionate and loving with her care. I felt like she was one of the best doctors I've ever experienced. When it comes to therapy, I could not have had a better team with Fiona and Leanna. They were loving, compassionate, the most amazing therapists I have ever worked with. When I arrived I could not use my limbs, and I left in 10 days putting on my clothes, taking a shower, using the restroom and walking with a walker on my own. I could not have made it this far without this team.
