Chefs Platter with rice and veg.
    Jason T.

This place has a large menu. Likely to find something that will suit your palette. I had the chef platter which consists of NY strip steak, breaded pork chop and chicken breast. Also comes with two sides. Service was prompt, question were quickly answered, food came out quickly. Can't go wrong with this choice in Clearwater BC.

Dining in the little village of Clearwater is quite a challenge. We found the Gateway Grill to be a quite good and healthy restaurant: The house salad was crispy, the stuffed portobello's (one of the 8 vegetarian menu choices!) were tastefull and the chocolate fudge dessert was delecious.

Food and service was good, nothing super special. Restaurant and bathroom clean. Prices are fair.

We read some of the reviews (although they were old) and since we were camping nearby, thought we…read morewould give this a try. Unfortunately, it was sadly disappointing. This is something they can't control, but the interior of the restaurant was extremely hot. Apparently they have air conditioning, but it was unable to keep up due to the temperature during the day being 39 degrees Celsius. Again, not their fault, but the cooks in the kitchen were working in 45 degree heat (according to the waitress), but would shut the restaurant down if it reached 50 degrees. My concern would be how sanitary would that be if the cooks are sweating in that heat? We ordered a large "Sam's Mistake" pizza. It took awhile to arrive, but when it did, it had black olives on it. That was a "mistake" since that particular pizza doesn't have olives on it. I noticed it immediately and the waitress took it back to the kitchen. A replacement had to be made, so we had to wait longer in the very hot restaurant. When the pizza finally came, it looked anemic. Normally pizzas have a golden crust and the cheese is also golden. Also, there was next to no toppings on this pizza. It was supposed to have at least two types of meat, but none of the slices overlapped. The onions were in fairly large chunks, and we could easily count the green pepper, mushroom and pineapple pieces on the pizza. Cheese was also minimal as well. The pizza was very bland except for one thing: spice! It was relatively hot (spicy) which we have not noticed in other loaded pizzas elsewhere (this was like a loaded pizza). I can only assume it was spicy pepperoni? There was only one waitress, and for awhile, she was run off her feet. When things slowed down, and while we were waiting for the correct pizza to arrive, she was emptying garbage from the bathroom and another location. I did not notice her wash her hands afterward, but I could have missed it. The waitress was pleasant enough, but never once asked how our food was, and we didn't tell her, but we went away very disappointed. If we lived in this area, we would definitely not return. Perhaps there is no competition there for pizza. With regard to other food that they prepare (hamburgers, ribs, etc.) we cannot comment since we didn't have any of those. However when we went to pay the bill, the waitress told us that a discount had been applied because the wrong pizza was made initially. We didn't ask for that; the discount was voluntary, so that was very nice of them to do. Because the reviews that are online now are very old, perhaps there was a change in ownership because those reviews were very positive. Unfortunately, we cannot say the same. Hopefully this was just an off day affected by heat and perhaps other factors, and other patrons will have a better experience.

In fact, this place is completely clueless when it comes to proper gluten free and it is terrible food on top of it. Their crepes are made on the same griddle and I was told they use separate utensils and put down a "layer of oil as a barrier". FYI-a layer of oil does NOT make a barrier for gluten. I ordered the regular crepe for my husband - he said it was more like a pancake and not terribly good. I ordered the breakfast that was supposed to have scrambled eggs, hash browns and bacon. I asked how the hash browns were prepared as I was concerned about cross contamination (often hash browns are fried in the same fryer as gluten items). I was told they are baked. Once I received my plate, I realized they were frozen hash browns so had to go request to look at the ingredients. Those were fine but I could have been told when I was clearly concerned about gluten contamination. I had a mouth full of the eggs which were flavourless and slimy/mushy so I would hazard a guess that they also came from a box/bag and not from the shell. My dining companions each shared two regular crepes, one with eggs and they thought the eggs in the crepes were terrible and disappointed in the quality of the crepe itself. They also left half their cappuccinos.

We found the food overall very average, including the Christmas dinner special menu. So much so, when we booked the hotel this year over Christmas, we made a point to make reservations at other nearby establishments. For unforeseen circumstances, some of our plans didn't go exactly as planned, so Mantles reluctantly was our best option. And, wow, what a surprise 12 months makes! The food was excellent! During our stay, we've had the Roasted Chicken, Oso Bucco, and the very generous Charcuterie Platter. All were magnificently prepared and delicious. Compliments to the kitchen team and chef. Keep up the great work! If you're like us and have been underwhelmed in the past with Mantles, I highly encourage you to give them another try. Well worth it.

We got seated at the lounge, which is less formal. We got the short ribs, salmon and a kids pizza. Short ribs were fantastic, melt off the bone tender and delicious, too many accompanying veggies for my taste, but very good. Salmon was also very good. The lowlight was the pizza, the very sweet tomato sauce ruined it all. Crust was decent. Service was kind and fast.
