*****This production has changed some from previous reviews. It is now at Gatsby's Mansion at 56 Davies, close to the Bond St tube stop.*****
I attended this Gatsby event twice over the past couple of years with my best friend as we took two extended vacations to London from the US. We had an absolute blast both times. These performances were at the previous venue, the Gatsby's Drugstore, and it was a charming set that made you feel that you were transported to the era. When my husband and I were planning my 50th birthday trip (Nov 2019), I saw that changes had been made in the production and that the venue had changed, but we booked it anyway and I bought my third gown to celebrate.
It did not disappoint. We had a fantastic time. The cast is enthusiastic and sharply on their feet to respond to the tone of the audience, draw the timid in, and play off those who are more interested in participating. The sets are intriguing and the new location is actually more desirable, close to the Bond St. tube.
After the show, the cast changed into their own clothes and came out to mingle with the guests. Oliver (Jay Gatsby) was friendly and enjoyed telling us about the evolution of the production as I shared with him that it was my third visit. Everyone--Daisy, Jordan, Tom, Jay-- had beautiful singing voices and perfected the dialect and accents of Fitzgerald's characters.
Those expecting a ballroom blaring music of the era and free-flowing champagne, will not find that. There are those moments (there is a bar but it is closed during the show and reopens at intermission and afterward) but this is overall exactly what it is playbilled-- immersive theater. The story is acted out by the cast, and they individually engage small groups and draw them into different sets within the set to continue a scene, as other scenes are ongoing in other areas. These episodes are short, so one does not miss a lot of the story, but it is important to have read the book so that you can get the most out of the sequences and divided scenes to be able to enjoy when the actors reconnect the groups.
The team of two young producers who picked up the show to elevate it to the next level also came out to chat and it will be fun to follow this team to see where it goes. They have taken it to Brussels and Korea and hope to cross the pond to NYC in a year or so , depending on copyright issues and logistics.
To have the most enjoyable experience, dress for the party! It puts you in the mood and all the other guests absorb one another's energy. It inspires and energizes the cast to have a room full of fringe, wing-tipped shoes and glitter, and makes the entire party that much more fun. When else will you be able to pretend you're another person, in another era, wear tux tails and obnoxious jewelry to a party full of strangers? Go all out-- don't be shy. In these times, we are all looking for a way to detach from reality and dressing up and over-the-top is a great way to get into the mood...and it makes everyone around you happy, because the changes that people feel from what their eyes take in are powerful. They are also contagious.
Cheers to the production! Hope to see you in the US soon! read more
