Gaudet is Great! After receiving the third free repair of my Gaudet glasses I feel compelled to spread the word about their excellent service & staff. Despite being smaller than other stores, Gaudet seems to have a wider selection of all styles, and many of their glasses are unique designs. A little dash of an update: I swung into Gaudet a couple of days ago to have my specs adjusted. Since I had the prescription filled at another local shop, they've been loose and wobbly. I attempted to have them fixed at a few places, but they still remained loosey-goosey. I was hoping one of the friendly Gaudet folks could set me straight. A lovely woman greeted me and took my glasses outback. For no charge she tightened them up, and preformed some sort of magic on them because they're fitting as perfect as can be. I never cease to be impressed with Gaudet. They're a fantastic shop with style and flair! read more

I've been wearing glasses since I was 11 years old, and every year or two, I've been faced (ha! pun intended) with the same old question: how, in heaven's name, am I going to find a new set of frames that I like? ....Particularly now that there seems to be only one single style in 8 million variations - the rectangle - that's available everywhere. Gaudet Optical is the one place in Halifax that is guaranteed to have frames that deviate from the "norm". And I do mean deviate. And I do mean "norm" - because this place has got some funky stuff happening. If you're one of those people whose glasses define their style - and I'm talking to you, architects, then Gaudet will probably have something for you. If they don't, at least you'll have a few good laughs trying on some colours and shapes you're unlikely to find anywhere else. Or your friends will have a good laugh. Professionalism to the utmost level, compassion and perseverance! I have difficult eyes to fit with lens, even with the most precise ones, Zeiss Progressive Individual. Janel and Doug were phenomenal in getting me to see the best I've ever experienced. They designed excellent lens for my needs, and were patient and so thorough, demonstrating both superb expertise and sensitive humanity. My vision-related headaches are completely gone, and my shoulders and neck no longer ache due to computer work, driving, reading, or attending concerts. I've bought several pairs of glasses & lens replacements from Doug Gaudet @ Gaudet Optical. One thing that I always look for is customer service. The Gaudet Optical staff, as well as Doug, certainly have that. They will continually repair, clean, recommend and mould your glasses to fit you/ your personality. Their hours are accommodating & they now have an onsite optician. They also provide quick turnaround on your new purchase. Another thing I look for is price. Gaudet optical is very competitive with many frames/lenses & styles to choose from. In fact, they have two floors for eyewear, sunglasses, specialized eyewear & gag eyewear (It really is a must see). When you ask yourself about price you can easily set what your budget amount is. On a personal note I find with frames you get what you pay for. I bought too many buy one get one frames (from other companies) and have ended up w/ nothing but failure in the frames. Screws are easily replaced, nose holders, rusted & broken frames are not. The last thing I look for is style. Gaudet Optical has certainly got that. So much so that when you buy your frame you know you are the only one that has that frame. Gaudet's one of a kind frame, once bought, truly is one of a kind because they only carry that one frame style (colours may vary). Once it's gone it's gone. It's a neat concept & it's well recognized by many people off the street. I am constantly stopped in the middle of the street or other stores & asked if I got my glasses From Gaudet. I bought my glasses at Gaudet two years ago, with my son coaching me on style. The staff guy (one of the owners sons I believe) introduced me to Nikon Home and Office lenses for my progressives prescription and wowie, talk about an excellent pair of glasses! I haven't had such good vision for years. The reason I'm writing is that I popped in to get the hinges tightened, and as soon as my insurance allows I'll be back at Gaudet for my next pair. I have bought a half-dozen pairs of glasses over the years from Doug Gaudet's shop. It is without doubt the most pleasant way to spend money -- well maybe not *the* most pleasant way, but one of them ;-) -- that I have found. The selection is eclectic and unique. They have frames you will find nowhere else in town, by boutique design firms, not the mass market. They have everything from ultra-funky to industrialist-cool. I'm a bit of a frames junkie, and I love going there just to look around and shoot the breeze with the staff about what's new. Plus the shop is a bright, cheerful space and it makes you feel good just walking in. But even if all they had were the same frames as everyone else, I would still go there. Doug Gaudet is one of the coolest cats in town, and I wish I could be like him when I grow up. The folks that work there are all friendly, helpful, and know their stuff. The service is top-notch -- they have been so patient with me as I came back several times with a pair of progressive lenses that I was having a very hard time adapting to, and bent over backwards to make sure I left satisfied. Just recently they repaired a pair of Yves Cogan frames I had bought there that I thought could not be fixed -- and they did it for free. They are not cheap, but in this case you get what you pay for. I highly recommend them. read more

The quest for my friend's set of frames continued recently with a stop at Gaudet Optical. A bright and funky frame shop on the far end of Quinpool Road. I have to say, I really dug this shop. It almost made me wish I had to wear glasses. The frames were all very unique and really interesting. Some of the more out there frames were worth a laugh or two, definitely not for her, but somebody out there would love them. The staff were really nice and made a lot of suggestions based on their discussions. The staff definitely love their jobs at Gaudet and it shows. You can see it in their eyes (and frames!). Stopping into Gaudet Optical the other day certainly brought a different light on glasses for me. I have been fighting the idea of having to wear glasses. I do not relish the thought of picking out a pair of frames. When you think of it, it says so much about you. Gaudet had a fantastic selection. I saw a few pairs that when I tried them on, thought looked ok. I am going to take a friend along with me, for a valued second opinion. If you are looking for a unique shopping experience with interesting product display. This is the shop for you. But come prepared to spend your money. The selection here is not geared toward the buy one get one free crowd. I am part of that crowd as well from time to time. But when you are in the mood for something higher end. This shop will please you. I bought a pair of Oakley eye glasses here and although the prices on the frames are high the prices for lenses and coatings was not bad. I did compare to my eye doctor and to other shops and found coatings and lenses were quite reasonable at Gaudet. read more

Best place in town to find frames that nobody else is likely to have. I bought a great pair of glasses here early this year. I had looked everywhere else for frames that were a little different, but found that almost every other optical store was supplied exclusively by Luxottica - a huge eyewear corporation. Like Rayban? That's Luxottica. Oakley? Also Luxottica. Armani? D&G? DK? Prada? Luxottica makes their frames too, and stamps the designer name on them. I discovered this when searching online for frame styles. Well somehow Gaudet manages to stock his displays with frames from other suppliers. The selection ranges from classy, to avant garde, to bizarre. It's fun just to browse the store and try things on. Mr Gaudet is pleasant to talk to and seems like a genuinely nice guy. You will pay more for glasses here, but if you enjoy the finer things then I highly recommend Gaudet Optical. read more

This is a small privately owned family business. Inside the shop is very nicely laid out and pretty fancy. You also seriously get what you pay for here, frames are of amazing quality at reasonable prices and staff are excellent at helping you find the perfect pair! They provide excellent customer service and everyone I dealt with was very knowledgeable. I went in several times for my frames which I bought from them to be adjusted and each time everyone was more than helpful. I've been dealing with Gaudet Optical for at least 20 years for my contact lens and always had an excellent service! It is also one of the cheapest place and I usually get my contacts within 2 days! Also, I have not live in Halifax all my life but they always sent me my contact lens wherever I was living, and sometimes, I was receiving them before I even got the cheque in the mail to pay for them! I have bought at least 6pairs of glasses at this shop and because my prescription has not changed in a number of years I still wear 4 pair on a regular basis. I like the great service and advice that they give me. The frames are expensive but what else do you wear everyday of your life? I like the "stranger" ones but they carry a broad spectrum of frames. All the staff are great and Doug especially enjoys presenting glasses that push my boundaries because after all this time he knows me and knows that I like the odd ones.He also ensures that they are appropriate for my face shape. I still wear the older glasses because they have their own unique appeal to me. They never go out of style. read more

I can't remember being treated so politely and professionally in my entire life. All the employees I dealt with here were so incredibly helpful and efficient, it was so easy getting new prescription lenses put into an old pair of frames I had. Not a great experience at all. It still bothers me a year later. I walked in about 2 years ago on a referral and bought a pair of reading glasses and ended up getting talked into the clip on sunglasses. Over all the bill was still less than $500 so maybe not their typical tier for a sale but its still money for me. The paint on the frames started chipping in a month and the clip on never fit. The ear grips were also loose and one finally fell off. When I returned to store the staff reluctantly replaced the grips with a completely different color and acted as I was done a favor. When I asked out of politeness if I need to pay they said let me check and returned five minutes later to say it was okay. It felt a bit humiliating. Finally one day once I got really fed up and the paint on the nose bridge started to chip I went once more and the staff said it was normal wear and tear and that it was because of the sunglass clip. Ironically I never used them :) . They said nothing could be done as the warranty was 3 months. I tried one last time and I was starting to look familiar in the store from the rolling eyes reaction of the staff . They took my glasses and said they would touch them up and to return in an hour. I was handed back a box with the glasses asking me to wait an hour before I used them. When I got home and opened the box the chips were not even attempted to have been touched up. People this store is for the south enders and the Anglo Saxons. I am neither and this was the worst experience I have ever had for my glasses. You will be much better treated at Vogue or lenscrafters in the eastern parts. Save yourself the trouble. zero out of five and I would have rather donated my nearly $500 to the homeless shelter. read more
